Fig. 1 - Joseph Paxton, Park at Birkenhead (1847)

“In the woods, we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life, —no disgrace, no calamity, (leaving me my eyes,) which nature cannot repair. Standing on the bare ground, —my head bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into infinite space, —all mean egotism vanishes.”

—— Ralph Waldo Emerson, Essays: Nature

Site: Built & Nature 1:2000

Utzon’s exploration of modularity in human scales is reflected in the Zßrich Theatre, which also becomes one focus of the scheme during the design process. While struggling to generate ideal sizes of different modules for the scheme, a simplistic grid is established, by extending boundaries of surrounding buildings at the site.
