ArtistStatement

EarthstoneChu

1970,Iwas20yearsold,Ifellintoadarkperiodofsevenyearsinmylifeandcame intocontactwiththeTaoTeChing.Icouldn’tunderstandwhatitwassayingevenifI readitcarefully,butitwasalightofhopethatIcouldseeinthedarktunnel.

ThecultivationofmindthroughmeditationandTaiChihasallowedmetoexperience manywonderfulsituationsthatcannotbedescribed.Later,whenIreadtheTaoTe

Chingagain,IfullyunderstoodthemeaningofthewordswrittenbyLaoTzu.Suddenly Ifoundthatthemeaningofmylifehadbeenquietlychanged.InspirationsurgesandI wanttodoanything.

EverydayIuseabrushtowritemythoughtsonricepaper.Inkpainting,single-plate printmaking,calligraphy,oilpaintingcollage,discardedobjectassemblage installation,poetry,literary,historical,andphilosophicaldiscussion,themasteryof naturalsoftness,andtheformationofbigartisticconceptsareallcompetingtobe produced.

AgoodfriendsaidthatIregardthepastasabrokenshoe.BecauseifItakeastep forwardinmysoul,Iwillseemoremountainsandrivers.Somepeoplecriticizemy worksasgarbage,ghostfights,andmessingpaintings.Otherssay:Earthstone,you havepaintedlove,eternity,andsublimity.Whensomepeoplesaythatmypaintings aresuperb,otherssaythatIamthemostannoyingpersonwhoisanti-academic.

Whensomeonesaidthatmydiscussionwasofgreatvalue,someoneelsesaid,"Who wantstoreadthiskindofarticle?"

Thiskindofjourneyacrossthousandsofmountainsandriversisconsideredveryluckyand normal.Afterall,onlywhenthefrequencyisthesamecanwecommunicate.However, peoplelikemewhoencounterdifficultiesinlife,regardlessoftheirseverity,canbefound everywhere.Iuseimagesandtexttosharemyexperienceofbaptism,whichresonates withmetosomeextent.Iwrotetwopoemsaboutthismatter:Onsunnydays,thereare alsodrownedpeople,butinwindandrain,aretherenohappypeople?

Aladysawmyentangledlinesandsaid,"Youhavewrittenallmylife.Icanlookatthis pictureforhours.Youaremydoor."Isaid,"Iamnotyourdoor,myworkisyourkey.You tookitandopenedthedoortoyourownuniquelife."Theentangledlinesinstantly allowedhertoembracetheupsanddownsofherlife.Shecouldwatchthemforseveral hours.It'sshewasobservingherselfintheembrace,andthenself-rediscoveryandrecreation. Beforegoingintoaprofoundsettlement,itwasdifficulttoclimbthehighwallofTaoist metaphysicalphilosophyandunderstandit,because,atthattime,myinsightwas kidnappedbysingle-linelogic.Whenthecompletetransformationhappensforlife,The single-linelogicwillbeweakened,andtheoverallreasoningandawarenesswillbe strengthened.Irealizethattheso-calledprofoundnessliesinordinarythings,inmypores, inmyurine,inthenaughtycloudsandbirdsIlookupto,innaturalopportunities,andthe endlessambiguity.

Returningtonatureandlivinginharmonywiththelightmeansintegratingintothe naturalworld.Toreachtheextremeofemptinessandlistenbychiistofindreason andfindorderinthechaos.

Whatisbornbychanceiscallednature,andtheunknownvastnessiscalled theambiguous.Thisisthebigblueoceanuniverseofthesoul.Theliteratiartcreation periodoftheTangDynastyshowedthisbigblueocean.Peoplewhoadmirethebig blueoceaninbondageandthenstruggletopursuespiritualfreedomareflocking out.TheEightImmortalsinWineisaclassicexample.Rembrandtfourhundredyears ago,andMonet,Matisse,andPicassoinmoderntimesallsteppedontotheedgeof thisbigblueoceanintheirlateryears.

Rigidandsuperficialinformationsuppressesthepureinstinctsinherentinhuman beingsandbreakstheumbilicalcordwiththeambiguousblueocean.Itmakesthe exerciseinstinctofsedimentation,exploration,andcreationdecline.

Materialabundancerequiresaccumulation,anditsfruitswillbeaffectedbyexternal forcesandwillbereducedtonothing.Spiritualabundancerequiresreleaseand enjoyment.Themoreyourelease,themoreabundantyouwillbe,andthemoreyou enjoy,thebetteritwillbe.Itcannotbedeprivedbyexternalforcesandcannotbe shakenbychanges.ThepracticeofTaoistmetaphysicalphilosophyisthecreationof aspirituallyfertilefoundation.

Fromthebaseofreturningtonature,beinginharmonywiththelight,goingtothe extremeofemptiness,andlisteningwithchi2,500yearsago,allthewayIhavebeen confirmingexperiencestoexploreanddevelop.ThenIhaveroughlysummarizedthe cognitivediscussionofhumanneedsinthefuture:First,eachLifeisunique.Second, weneedtodeepenandwidentheeducationofourfeelings.Third,spiritualfreedom istheultimatehumanasset.Fourth,buildacivilizationofmutualappreciation.5. Energybeautyisthemostconvenientandpowerfulstructuralelementforhuman unityandharmony.

Taoistmetaphysicalphilosophyhasgrownmyartisticcreation,andmyartisticcreationhas formedthephilosophicalthoughtsofthe21stcentury.Myworksareashared responsibilityandvisionthatIsharewithpeople.IfIamluckyenoughtobethekeyfor peopletoentertheirownabundantgardenofspirit,thatwouldbemygreatesthonor.

Injustafewdecades,therehavebeenseveralwavesofInternetrevolutions.whennot dealenoughwithit,wejumpedintotheAIrevolution.Inthelonghistoryofhuman footsteps,thisisthefirsttimesuchrapidchangeshaveoccurred.Culturalhomogeneity andshallownesswillonlybecomemoreserious.NoonemaylikethewhistleIblow,butI stillblowitinstinctively.

ItcanbeseenthatIamapersonwholikestomaunderandlovestoplay.Timeisa constantvehicleoflife,andyouwillenjoyasmuchfunasyouprojectbetweenitsdotsand lines.Atseventy-threeyearsold,IamasplayfulasIwaswhenIwasthreeyearsold.Only nowIdon'tcrywhenIfall,I'mhappyinstead.

Becauseeverytimeyoufall,yourkungfuwillgetbetter.ThisisalsothemainreasonwhyI loveplayingMMAmartialsportwithyoungpeople.

創作自述

周于棟

1970年,我二十歲,陷入七年的生命黑暗期,接觸到道德經。仔細讀也不懂在說什麼,但 是它卻是我在黑暗隧道裏看到一點生命的希望之光。

靜坐和太極拳的修養心性,讓我體驗到非常多不能言說的奇妙情況。之後當我再翻道徳經 ,完全領會老子寫下來的文字意義。突然發現自己生命的內涵早已悄悄地翻 每天用毛筆在宣紙薄寫心中的話。水墨畫、單版版畫,書法,油畫拼貼,棄物組合裝置, 詩詞,文史哲論述,自然鬆柔的掌握,藝術大觀念的形成都沒閒著的競相產生。

一位好友說我視前事如蔽屨。因為魂魄中往前一步,就多增加一山一河的視野。有人批評 我的作品是垃圾,是鬼打架,黑白畫,也有人說:Earthstone你已經把愛畫出來,把永恆 畫出來,把崇高畫出來。有人說我的畫出神入化的時候,就有人說這個反學院的最討厭。

當有人說我的論述價值連國的時候,就有人說這種文章誰要看? 這樣的跨千山涉萬水,算是很幸運,也很正常。畢竟頻率相同才能溝通。然而像我這樣遭 遇生命難關的人,不論輕重形態,到處都有。我用圖像文字創作來分享我的洗禮心得,多 多少少會有共鳴共振。這事我作詩兩句:晴天亦有落湯客,風雨那無得意人?

位女士看到我牽纏流轉的線條,說:「你寫盡我的生,我可以在這個畫面看幾個小時。你 是我的門。」我說:「我不是你的門,我的作品是你的龥匙。你拿去開了你自己獨特生命的門 。」牽纏的線條剎時讓她攬擁起生的起伏,可以看好幾個小時,是她在攬擁中察照自己,進 而自我再發現再創造。 未深入沈殿之前,面對道家形而上哲學高牆難攀難以理解,因為那時我的洞察力死死地被單線 邏輯綁架。來了一個生命體會大翻轉,單線邏輯弱了,整體推理和覺照強化了。體會到所謂的 深奧,就在平常事物,在自己的毛細孔,在自己的尿液,在仰望的頑皮鳥雲,在自然機緣,在 曖昧無止。 歸璞返真、和光同麈是要融入自然平常。致虚極、以氣傾聽是在渾沌曖味中尋理則納秩序。 機緣所生稱為自然,未知浩瀚稱為曖味。這是心靈的大藍海大宇宙。唐朝文人藝術創整時期, 展現這個大藍海。在束縛中傾慕大藍海,進而為追尋心靈自由而掙扎的人蜂湧而出,酒中八仙 是經典的例子。四百年前的林布蘭特,近代的莫內、馬蒂斯、畢卡索晚年都不約而同的踩入這 大藍海的邊際。

僵化淺薄資訊,壓制了人類與生俱來的純真自然本能,弄斷了與曖昧藍海的臍帶。沉澱探 尋發現創造的運使本能衰退了。

物質豐饒要追求累積,它的果實會被外力影響,也會化為烏有。精神豐饒要釋放享受,愈 釋放愈豐饒,愈享受愈美好。外力不能剝奪,變遷不能動搖。道家形而上哲學的實踐就是 精神豐饒基盤的打造。

從兩千五百年前的歸璞返真、和光同麈、致虚極、以氣傾聽的基礎,路印証體驗到探索 開發,我粗略整理歸納出對人類未來需要的認知論述:一,每個生命都是獨一無二。二, 感覺深廣化重度教育。三,心靈自由是人類終極資產。四,互相欣賞的文明建造。五,能

量美是人類一體和諧最方便最強大的建構元素。

道家形而上哲學成長了我的藝術創作,我的藝術創作又形成了廿世紀的哲理思想。我的

作品是我與人們共同的承担與願景的分享,如果有幸成為人們進入自己精神豐饒花園的龥 匙,那是我無上的榮幸。

短短幾十年,跳躍幾波網路革命,來不及正視消化,又跳進AI革命。在人類腳步長河中 ,這樣急促多變是第遭。文化單化淺層化只有愈嚴重。我吹的哨子可能沒人愛聽,但 是我還是本能性的吹。

可以看出我是愛雜唸又愛玩的人。時間是不停的生命載具,在它的點線之間投射了多少望 想,就享有多少玩趣。七十四歲了,跟我三歲時一樣愛玩。只是現在跌倒不會哭,反而高 興。

因為,每跌一次功夫就會更上一層。這也是我愛跟年輕人打終極格鬥運動最主要的原因。
