NORTHERN KENTUCKY CAMPUS

EDUCATING PHYSICIANS IN KENTUCKY FOR KENTUCKY The University of Kentucky College of Medicine promotes a diverse and inclusive environment that provides excellence in education, equitable health care, and transformative research to improve the health and wellness of Kentuckians and beyond. One of the most critical barriers to improved health and wellness for the Commonwealth is the shortage of physicians serving in community settings across the state. To address that need strategically, the college is expanding student physician training opportunities across three regional campuses.

The UK College of Medicine-Northern Kentucky Campus, in partnership with St. Elizabeth Healthcare and Northern Kentucky University, is expected to open in the fall of 2019 and will welcome 35 students in the inaugural class. The four-year medical school campus will complement educational programs currently offered at the academic medical center on the Lexington campus, the Rural Physician Leadership Program based in Morehead, and the UK College of Medicine-Bowling Green Campus.

More than 10,000 UK College of Medicine alumni practice in all 50 states and 26 countries around the world.

* The UK College of Medicine-Northern Kentucky Campus is targeting student matriculation in July 2019, pending approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

KENTUCKY INTEGRATED CURRICULUM

NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED, LOCALLY EXECUTED The UK College of Medicine provides innovative, high-quality education through its highly innovative program – the Kentucky Integrated Curriculum. The curriculum emphasizes evidencebased medicine along with early clinical experiences, integration of the basic and clinical sciences, and innovative teaching and learning methods such as small-group, standardized patients, and interactive lectures and laboratory exercises. By embracing a transdisciplinary approach, the curriculum at the college features a deep integration of the foundational and clinical sciences across all four years. As a result, courses such as the expansive Introduction to Clinical Medicine are taught by both a basic scientist and a clinician to include skill development in patient interviewing, physical examination, and insight into causes of health disparities, sociocultural, and behavioral aspects of health care. The curriculum emphasizes active learning and classroom engagement that will be replicated across the regional campuses. To maintain the integrity of the training at the UK College of Medicine-Northern Kentucky Campus, the vast majority of instruction will occur on-site, delivered by faculty with appointments in the UK College of Medicine. Additionally, lectures will be live-streamed from Lexington for onsite student participation.

The UK College of Medicine follows one highly innovative curriculum for all four campuses.
