EDITORIAL How much of us are tired, discredited and a bit afraid? How many of us go to sleep and wake up wishing that, with a glint of magic, some music happens to leak, some image, something that can make us tranquilized or that can comfort us. After all, for about a year now, nothing new, in the musical field was officially released. How many of us are afraid, that in front of the notes, the research published, of a flop? A sales flop, the ruin of something that even hasn’t started yet? Would this be the possible end of the prophetic mode? Well, altought everything conspires to an affirmative, I prefer to believe that that wont happen. Because, in these case, it inst about another artist. Its Lady Gaga. Its a fact that any other are afraid of the Idea of ARTPOP takes more than who we hope, after all, it makes a long time since gaga doesn’t work or release something new. There are no expections for performances in award shows much less relevant indications that may surrender prizes for now. And that’s terrifying, because for a fan (I believe), the biggest fear is to see their idol sinking, knowing he can still make things better than they have already given us. The music industry is quick, she tires of things very easy, the same way that consumers “nonfans” bored too. However, let us reflect on the best to finish this thought. Something truly good can not be done from overnight, in a studio run rampant, to be launched quickly and perhaps become a laughingstock due to quality was produced, into disrepute. It takes commitment to make a classic. Look at Michael Jackson. Although it seems too much presumption, or a self-sufficiency exacerbated make such a comparison, it is valid at the level of exemplification. Michael was a machine to create classics, however, had its own duration of imprisonment for such classics arose. When he would release an album, Michael worked and disclosed his new album, with memorable performances and clips that are so well made, dispense adjectives. However, after the release ended, he simply disappeared for two or three years, and when he returned, reappeared with an even better album and the success was more than right. Then everything was repeated in his creative cycle. The fact is that a masterpiece does not come in a flash. It takes time for it to be designed, we need variety for you to choose the best among the best, you need to make sure that, when launched, the job will not face barriers to reach the top. And I sincerely believe Gaga knows it all. Not to mention that we forget sometimes that the potential of idol worship. We forget the size of your creativity, your ability to create iconic songs, video clips never before thought by another artist. Although we have fear of failure, deep down, we know that Gaga is able to do anything to reach the top in which she believes much. And it’s up to us fans, do not do it to be forgotten, meanwhile recluse for its creation. Because when we least expect it, she appears at the Grammys ceremony inside a giant egg. This is Lady Gaga.

nd if it’s polemic what we’re talking about, we can only be talking about one person: Perez Hilton. For those of you who don’t know, Perez is blogger and was for a long time Lady Gaga’s close friend. Born as Mario Lavandeira he assumed the identity of Perez Hilton on a clear allusion to the name of the famous socialite Paris Hilton. Perez has one of the most accessed blogs of the internet and followed step-by-step Lady Gaga’s rise, by saying he was so far a fan of her work. Not in much time, they became great friends. However, in the same unexpected and mayfly this friendship became, it ended. Just like in the mere mortal’s lives, the thin line between love and hate was exceeded. The reason? Unknown. What is known is that an unbridled exchanging barb began.

8

LGBR Magazine APRIL 2013

Perez, who collects famous disaffection such as Paris Hilton, Lily Allen and, most recently, Azealia Banks, is also known for being an untrustworthy person. Says be friends with Madonna and Britney Spears but every once in a while he doesn’t miss the opportunity to skewers them. And with Gaga was not different. He even exchanged barbs through Twitter with Tara Savelo, make-up artist and one of Gaga’s best friends after mean tweets with pictures where Gaga was supposedly, overweight.

He became the #2 enemy of little monsters (the #1 is an old lady who forgets to take her meds every other day) by disclosing and mocking, the also supposedly, low sales in Latin-American. Actually, Perez is nothing but an ungrateful, selfish and two faced person, or simply a real Judas. As well as on of Jesus followers, he was capable of betraying and losing the trust of someone who he called friend, also losing one of the most valuable treasures of the world: one friendship. By the way, for Perez that was not the first time and maybe it’s not the last. Only remains for us to feel sorry. Sorry for a sub-celebrity, with no talents, who lives by self-assertion, polemics and leads a life surrounded by people who don’t trust him and who he can’t trust. Perez Hilton… excuse me, no. ■

IT'S ALL I CAN SAY

No doubts that ones of the most creative minds of the entertainment world are united to work for Lady Gaga. From coreographers to stylists, they try to maximize the talent that Gaga already has, making her being always in evidence. Together, they are the Haus of Gaga! In this edition, we interviewed, with exclusivity, Helen Green and Iggy Proof, two of the most recent members of this creative summit. BY MARI TAKS

HELEN IGGY GREEN

PROOF

“MY NAME IS

LADY GAGA,

AND THIS IS MY HAUS”

HELEN GREEN

Endowed with an enviable talent, Helen Green was discovered because of her tumblr and her “littlemonsters.com” account, in which ones her often post Gaga’s portraits and portraits of renowned artists as well, such as David Bowie, Muse and Marina and the Diamonds. After that, her artistic look and her technique were recognized by Lady Gaga, who demonstrated, in her own Twitter account, an interest in knowing the young British woman, barely 20, who is responsible for such stunning artwork. Ever since some Green’s drawings were tweeted by Gaga, she invited Green to meet her at the Born This Way Ball backstage. Gaga was so amazed with her talent that called her to join the Haus of Gaga, her creative team, in which her first work is related to the Born Brave Bus project.

To read up more on that, check out our exclusive interview with Helen Green. LGBR MAGAZINE: First of all, I would like to thank you for being so nice with us. We do love your artwork. As our first question, we would like to know what made you want to draw?

Other designers I’m interested in include Mary Katrantzou, Givenchy, Victor and Rolf, Mugler.. etc. Sometimes I look at couture collections for inspiration for outfits to draw in my portraits

about the news until she mentioned it to everyone on Twitter and LittleMonsters.com! I met her backstage at her London concert not long before the announcement, and even then I didn’t know she was going to introduce me to the Haus. It was a huge shock, I didn’t think it would be possible for something like this to happen to me. I just want to keep doing her proud!

HELEN GREEN: Thank you! I’ve always had the interest in drawing. I drew a lot throughout my childhood and with my granddad’s encouragement, I continued doing it. It just felt natural to me, which is why I enjoy LGBR MAGAZINE: What about LGBR MAGAZINE: Could you tell it. The first time was so surreal, because it was my chance to introduce myself in person. I felt so nervous, but she was so lovely I almost forgot about my nerves. She seemed genuinely happy to meet me, which made the whole moment so special. I’ll never forget it. I was in touch with Haus members in the lead up to the Born Brave Bus tour to work on artwork for the event, which was a lot of fun to work on!

HELEN GREEN: It’s weird that people would think of me that way! I love being part of this fanbase, and I’m grateful to know that my work is appreciated. I always try and make time to reply to messages because they really help to keep me motivated. I’d rather think of my “fans” as friends.

Born This Way demonstrated a sense of maturity, and on the next album there’s a lack of maturity. I’m excited about this new direction, and the thought of a new sound. I really hope there will be some amazing heavy beats like in Government Hooker, Bloody Mary, Heavy Metal Lover.. etc. I’m also looking forward to hearing the tracks produced by LGBR MAGAZINE: Finally, what Zedd and Madeon. IGGY PROOF

Iggy Proof (Hiromi Yoshimura) is one more proof that a little monster can be recognized by his/her job. After the striking entry of Helen Green to the Haus Of Gaga, because of her drawings, this japanese, that adopted a ocidental nickname, was also invited to be part of this team of talents. Iggy is a bit shy, but her drawings speak, and really well, for her. Designer of the Born Brave Bus, Hiromi became famous because of this wonderful project related to Lady Gaga. Just like Helen Green, she was discovered because of her drawings published in the social network littlemonsters.com and, since then, she’s gifting us with her great creativity. So, the LGBR Magazine went to Japan to realize an exclusive interview about the backstage of this incredible story. LGBR MAGAZINE: First of all, we would like to thank you for being so nice with us. As our first question, can you tell us how they invited you to take part of this amazing project? IGGY PROOF: I would like to thank you too. Last year “Haus of Gaga” contacted me through Littlemonsters.com and asked me if I could do some drawing for the Born This Way Foundation tour bus. I was really surprised and couldn’t believe it. LGBR MAGAZINE: They gave you a guide to follow or can you create whatever you want? IGGY PROOF: The tour they had in their mind was something like hippie party, but for the design of the bus they let me do what I wanted to do. At first I was asked to design the trailers led by the bus. Haus and Gaga liked it and then they asked me to do the drawing for the bus. As for the drawing of drivers side and other people on the bus, Gaga told me through Haus which person I should draw.

LGBR MAGAZINE: Have you ever been in contact with Lady Gaga? IGGY PROOF: I have never had direct contact with Gaga. She contacted me through Haus. LGBR MAGAZINE: Do you think you might be invited to design some other Gaga’s project? IGGY PROOF: I don’t know. It would be nice if they invite me again. LGBR MAGAZINE: What about other projects, which ones do you participate/design for? IGGY PROOF: Gaga inspired me to start drawing, so I never had any other projects. I have never been interviewed like this and it feels very strange, and very happy. Thank you very much! ■

| FAST STRAIGHT BR RENATA MEDRONHO

According to POP Dust, the first reason for 2009 had been considered the year of the “Pop Revolution” was the emerged of our Mother Monster, entitling her as the “Biggest Popstar of the Planet”. In a passage from the motive for such a choice, they said that “Gaga marked a return to a sort of classic pop star model—one where every single, every appearance and every video became an unignorable event”. To read the entire article, acess: www.popdust.com

Gaga, this time, overcame herself in the extravagance mode: she ordered from the designer Ken Borochov a wellchair dipped in gold, which he called Chariot, to help her recover from the hip lesion she suffered that interrupted the Born This Way Ball Tour and coasted her a 25 million dollars damage. Chariot was dipped is 24 carat gold, with a leather assent, a imbued umbrella and reclining of 180. The singer proved to all who laugh of her accident that it isn’t a “simple” lesion which will stop her from remaining on the tabloids, and neither will bring her significantly financial damages….

The Mother Monster ordered a black and gold bride dress with removable parts and studded with diamonds in the bustier, from her darling friend Donatella Versace, which will be used in her wedding with her boyfriend, Taylor Kinney. The singer said she’s willed to pay not only millions of dollars in her ceremony – that will be placed in her hometown, New York, in order to her great-grandfather attend –, but also (and primordially) in her dress. She added as well that thinks “that marrying in white is tacky” and is convicted to stay true to her very own style the minute she walks into the altar wearing black and gold. (Not like this choice is surprising for us, Little Monsters, right?)

Gaga may be recovering from her hip lesion, but this obstacle isn’t restraining her from living normally her busy life. Lately, she’s been occupied with her search to a new house in the fancy Manhattan, heart of the Big Apple – New York. According to the journal The New York Post, our diva is interested in two places: a penthouse at the 52th ave., available in “only” 6 million dollars or a flat at “The Imperial Park”, said to be one of the best buildings in Manhattan, with a wonderful panoramic view to Central Park. ■ APRIL 2013

The Born This Way Era was, as we all know, was marked by several unique trends, diversified styles and colors, that however dark they were, there was always something in focus, especially at the end of the era. But what to expect from ARTPOP? What are the new trends, new styles? What colors will be present in that era? Surely, it will be a major breakthrough for the fashion world.

BY HENRIQUE OLIVEIRA CARDOSO

U

nlike the Born This Way era, which was marked by the dark, without much color and flamboyance, ARTPOP will be quite different. As Gaga herself had spoken, this new time will not be as reflective as the previous one, it will be more conceptual, with no further messages. When it comes to Lady Gaga, who is a trendsetter cream, we know we can expect everything. From bold looks drawn to the color blocking, using iridescent fabrics or changeant, which may be close friends of the singer that was autriches, tweeds made from the line y, swarovski applications, shoulder pads always accompanied by beautiful stiletos perhaps a little black dress vintage haute couture which turns and moves incorporate to her wardrobe. Things that Gaga never leaves. In order to illustrate a little of what to expect in this new era, the Walk Walk, Fashion Baby selected some outfits that give us a rough idea of what can be ARTPOP. Let’s walk, baby! Gaga, on February 6, in St. Paul, United States, makes an appearance on “Born Brave Bus” with a good tee grunge rock band Anthrax, with which she has been seen wearing and sometimes with hair green fluor perhaps was evidence of ARTPOP. Accessories that may help you compose further Gaga’s outfits and make them much more glam are hats. No matter whether they are large or small, tall or short. They were always present and, no doubt, will continue in ARTPOP, always talking nicely with the rest of the look. And please, Gaga, if possible, call Philip Treacy, It will be successful for sure!

20

LGBR Magazine APRIL 2013

Another trendy right now worn by Gaga at other times is the color blocking, which will mark a strong presence in this new phase, not only in looks but also in her hair (invest, Gaga, please!)

You realize that glamor and eccentricity will never be out of ARTPOP but ... Lady Gaga is synonymous with improbability, so we have to think of everything. For some time now, even at the conference made with Little monters via Skype, Gaga is appearing and posting pictures of outfits with a softer footprint. In recent outfits for Gaga posted on her instagram (@ ladygaga), we can clearly see the use of pastel colors, leather, fully buttoned shirts, big hats and large sunglasses and famous known as bottom of the bottle, and with the very large tip raised, remembering the kitten model that gives it a whole footprint geek fashion.

“NerdFace Killah studio stuntin” (@ladygaga) Looking at it this way, many of you are thinking: “How ARTPOP can use this online geek fashion?” Well the answer is no: “Candy Colors.” They are super current fashion! These weaker colors, pastels will make a wonderful look for the new era if combined with the autriches, a baggy, perhaps with a more vibrant tone, a cache-coeur, a chemisier and, why not, in a more fancy habbilè for a VMA, for example? When it comes to Gaga, nothing is impossible! ■ APRIL 2013

THE QUEEN BY NÍCHOLAS PONSO

“Gaga, the queen

of creativity”

22

LGBR Magazine APRIL 2013

Recently accused of being under a “creative block” to produce ARTPOP, Gaga shows, the background constructed in her career, it is just a groundless rumor. Undoubtedly, their innovative and creative spirit was the biggest differential of this star when she appeared in the New York underground environment. With luxurious clothes, exotic hair and a creative unique mind, Gaga revolutionizes pop with her different way of seeing reality. “Je dèteste la vérité “, as said in the Monster Ball Tour, and, of course, see the world in an artistic way helped her rise to fame in.

Actually, erect controversy seems to be his specialty. We can cite, as an example, its majestic meat dress that had been used in the same award the following year, causing viewers to be scared. However, for Gaga, her image serves as a means of disseminating an ideology, every action has an artistic significance, as difficult as it is identified. Her clothes and bold letters, like Judas, they carry a heavy ideological burden sometimes ignored. Through her enormous influence in the culture, Gaga defends its values in a unique way: by ART.

Leaning into the hands of giants such as Andy Warhol and David Bowie, Gaga feeds on her inexhaustible source of inspiration. Together with his team, the Haus Of Gaga mysterious, our Madre Monstère prepares everything involving her artistic career. Creative ability this woman has. One of the milestones of her career was the Video Music Awards (VMA) in 2009. Considered one of the best performances in the history of the awards, Gaga bleeds to death in the middle of the stage, live, to nine million viewers, singing her new single at the time: Paparazzi.

After her most conceptual album, Born This Way, what to expect from our Mother Monster? That is the question that is not silent. According itself,ARTPOP will be a “phoenix”, where the ashes reborn and Pop revolutionize what we know. Ability to this, she has already proved to have. Our Mother Monster will shake the pillars of the world of music and entertainment, proving to skeptics that Lady Gaga is here to stay. ■ APRIL 2013

NEVER

FORGOTTEN

BY DIOGO LACERDA

“So Happy

I Could Die”

A

Altought of what many think, this song Synthpop, with a mix of europop, talks about the state of happiness in what people are when they are under the influence of some kind of substance. Mother Monster wrote this song to describe her fear of drogs, alcool, and for addiction. But the best is that Gaga gave a name to this “fear”: its called the “Alcohol Monster” This song makes aswell a refrence to her lavander wig. In July 26 of 2010, the singer twitted: Lavander wig is back in full force. I’m so happy I could die. To this song is also associated the Living Dress, who is a dress inspired on other criations of Hussein Chalayan, built by Vinilla Burnham for the Haus of Gaga. The Dress was first used on February 24 of 2010, and before of his premiere, gaga twitted: “2nite Haus of Gaga debuts “the living dress” inspired by Hussein Chalayan, as a fashion moment to be performed in “pop show” at Monsterball.” The dress was only used one time out of the Monster ball, gaga used it to perform the music Brown Eyes, on the tv show Friday Night with Jonathan Ross.

So Happy i could is part of The Fame Monster, the second album of our queen, and it’s very personal and with an unusual style of our Mother. Produced by Lady gaga, RedOne, and Space Cowboy, So Happy I could die became a music very familiar and sweet with the Monsters, this song helps turning the insecurities into happiness. So, So Happy I could die makes us feel better with ourselves. Although the music talks about happiness, many times, so happy I could die can sound a little boring and sad, because it doesn’t have the usual characteristics of Gaga, like Telephone or Bad Romance. The music can be taken as sad and hopeful, due to the tone of voice that the mother keeps in the music. It Differs from the rest of the songs because the music is very monotone, and has a big sexual influence, leaving the critics divided between their opinions. ■

ARTPOP WHAT TO EXPECT OF

- THE ERA OF POSSIBILITIES DISCOVER AND UNDERSTAND THE WAYS THAT LEAD LADY GAGA TO CREATE ANOTHER BIG SUCCESS.

BY AMANDA PORT DIOGO LACERDA PAULO VITOR SOARES

With the premature end of The Born This Way Ball Tour, we had to say goodbye to the Born This Way Era as well. An Era marked by the artistic revolution, by the intellectual freedom and by the self -acceptance which began in September 2010 at the VMA’s that year, where Lady Gaga kept her promise of revealing her upcoming album’s name if she won the Video of the Year award. But maybe not even Gaga knew the dimension and the way that the imminent Era would take. The most controversial ever since her career started, The Born This Way Era came up with the mission of spreading the message that “we’re beautiful in our way”, that “God makes no mistakes” and that “we were born this”. The Era ends but its message and its legacy remains. But what’s the next step? Which way to go, after one of the most striking and undeniably successful albums of all time in pop music history? How to satiate her thirsty and beloved monsters? Lady Gaga seems to have – and there’s a long time – those answers. In August last year she tattooed her right arm with Born This Way successor’s name: ARTPOP.

G

aga announced that the album goes beyond the usual, in all senses. The ARTPOP Project will bring besides physical and digital albums an interactive appeal with general public and fans, specially. An app is being developed to accompany the album, to provide this connection between the album’s concept to the big audience. This interactive concept, never before adopted by a mainstream artist, promises to revolutionize the phonographic industry once again. Gaga who revolutionized the way music was consumed by causing the “boom” of digital sales and of the iTunes, has already shown be able to spearhead a project of this big. With a different approach from last Era, Gaga promises that her next album will be both similar and opposite to the vanguardist “The Fame”. Unlike the genial and obscure The Fame Monster and from the intense and revolutionary Born This Way, Gaga has worked on an amusingly unpretentious album, a lot like her debut one, however she is trying to innovate and surprise in her 3rd studio album. Proof

of this is the fact that Gaga has sought new blood, as the russian DJ Zedd and as the young french prodigy Madeon for the creative process and musical production and for the so far unconfirmed collaboration with the controversy hip-hop newcomer Azealia Banks. Gaga has been promising an album that aims firstly please her fans. She confirmed that Telephone’s video continuation will be on ARTPOP, however we still don’t know whether there will be or not a collaboration with Beyoncé once again. There’s also rumors about religious and polemics songs like the bold ‘’Burqa’’, which makes us wait for the comeback of a challenging and provocative Gaga. We can also wait for more crazy outfits, heavy electronic beats (as the ones used by Zedd) and sticky choruses characteristics of The Fame and The Fame Monster. It looks like the colors will be coming back as well. Probably the typical blond-wigged Gaga make an appearance in the ARTPOP Era, while Jo Calderone isn’t since during the Skype chat, Gaga stated that she and Jo had a fight.

We may have our party and bold Gaga back, like in her first videos. Getting out a little of the obscure and deep into something more superficial, but any less mysterious. Plus with a new concept like “enjoy life”. Although, with no generalizations. After all, it doesn’t matter the music, Gaga always have a message to spread to us and in ARTPOP that shall not change. Fighting for a better world and having self-pride are the greatest messages that Gaga tries to pass to her monsters. It’s almost an evolutionary process: first, you learn how to love yourself and then you’re able to

enjoy your life and chase your happiness. Another confirmed information is that the next album will be divided in two parts: the first one with a more commercial propose turned to radios and charts and the second one more experimental, more artistically elaborated and made to please the expert critique. There shall be an period of time between the two parts.

Although, the main concept of ARTPOP’s project is not having a pre-defined concept. “ARTPOP is all about possibilities. It could mean anything’’ says Gaga. “Create your own concept, listen the album and ignore the limits’’. Reading between the lines, it’s evident that we can expect more than the obvious. It’s almost a mix of all Gaga’s albums. ARTPOP promises to be the incredible fusion of the concepts of each previous album with a portion of art, technology and, of course, good music. We can only to wait anxiously for ARTPOP. Despite the difficult time that Gaga is being through in her personal life, as her spine lesion and her grandfa-

ther recent loss, it seems that we’re closer and closer of this innovating project. If there was no destiny intervention, we could be listening to ARTPOP right now. Or maybe not. The album can be released tomorrow or it can take months and months. Maybe it’s going to have epic collaborations. Or maybe not. Maybe her music videos listing short films will be back. Or maybe not. We can’t know exactly. There are only possibilities. But that is exactly what ARTPOP is all about: possibilities.

“Think of what’s considered impossible. We’ll make it possible. There’s a lot more to do. There’s a lot more to say. Future has a lot more to say.” - Lady Gaga APRIL 2013

LOOKING

INTO THE DARK BY BRUNO DO NASCIMENTO

“ARTPOP

COULD

MEAN ANYTHING” “There’s no exam

with Jean-Paul Sartre.” - Lady Gaga

A

parentently, this is the concept that rounds Mother Monster’s new cd. It remembers the abstractionism and arrives surrounded by mystery. Abstract art is all artistic expression not represented by figurative images of reality, so, the artist is free to express in a free way. When an abstract work is exposed, typically the artist guides you to feel and set it as you want. In Gaga’s case, not just the music fits it, but the whole context of a CD, photoshoots, lyrics, melodies and presentations possibly follow a pattern, as in previous eras. To illustrate, we have an example in the song High Princess/Stache (only an option, considering that Gaga is always based on something artistic with theories and fundamentals). On this song we can see that the abstractionism is big because it visibly releases several seemingly unconnected sentences, speaking metaphorically about various subjects, depending on of each one’s point of view. Especially in this song, she cites Jean-Paul Sartre, saying that there is no exam with him, and she hopes us don’t think her obsession is awkward. Sartre (who never married, and had the open relationship with Simone de Beauvoir, with whom he exchanged letters full of confidences about relationships with other partners, which should have caught the attention of Lady Gaga), and have won the Nobel Prize in literature of 1964, was one of the important philosophers of Existentialism (influenced by Marx Weber, Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Nietzsche, among others), a school that in its philosophy says that in the human case (and only if human) existence precedes essence. Man first exists then set himself, while all the other stuff is what it is, without definition, without having an “essence” into existence later. Here we see a quite abstractionism on the first stage of human case, which can mean ARTPOP. The Sartrean existentialism seeks to clarify all aspects of human experience, and systematize it in two books: Being and Nothingness and Critique of Dialectical Reason. Sartre says that we can understand the human as any element in the world and that there is nothing beyond what is. This way of appearance of being, that is not the only, is based on three characteristics: being is, being is what is, being is Being-in-itself (a term borrowed from Hegel). With the appearance of being, comes consciousness, which is a different kind of being, which has self-knowledge, and also respects himself and the world, a different form, called Beingfor-itself. It’s Being-for-itself that makes the functional and temporal relationships between being-in-itself, and by doing this, builds a sense for the world in which he lives. The Being-for-itself has an essence defined. He is not the result of a pre-existing idea. Sartrean’s

existentialism disregards the existence of a creator who has predetermined the essence and purpose of each person. It is necessary that the Being-for-itself exists, and for this he defines existence at every moment what is its essence. Based on this, we realize that ARTPOP still has strong philosophies from Born This Way era. Remember that in the previous era we were motivated to do not make a difference of white or black, gay or straight, and here, with these new standards, she tries to show that each one was the same thing before existing, to be structured, we were something deformed (which refers to the abstraction, the being-in-itself), and later, everybody were suiting up to an idea, according to the reality you live in, what was abstract and formless, and now has a meaning (being-for-itself). The definition, post-existence, can also be considered a stereotype, where the society is “responsible” for saying what is beautiful or not. An image where everybody think that the same thing is beautiful, and in my view, is what Gaga has been fighting with her weirdness throughout her career. (High Princess was conceived in a pre era where most things that Lady Gaga gives us, is in the form of tip to prepare us for something new). We realize that it was not in vain that Gaga quoted Sartre, not only by his philosophies, and also by the great leader that he was, dealing with freedom of speech, which is what our beloved either run after. We see that ARTPOP leaves no doubt that it will be a great album.■

POP ATE MY HEART BY PAULO VITOR SOARES E BRUNO DO NASCIMENTO

“In the futur

re, anyone can become famous for a brief period of time. - Andy Warhol

T

he multifaceted and vanguardist Andy Warhol, back there in the 80’s, could so far foresee the fame phenomenon on the information Era. The greatest challenge on the golden times was being noticed and the door for relevance was the talent. It was all about making your inner star shine brighter than the others among a talent constellation. However, as the time went by, as well as medias had developed and information exchange velocity increased, the greatest challenge no

longer was the fame conquest but how to keep it. Making the fifteen minutes fame last a little longer was the question. The talent, which assumed a new secondary role on this new environment, gave space for innovation. The artist needed to reinvent itself in each simple appearance and make each one of them a huge performance. This way we’re able to understand the reason why Lady Gaga remains in evidence since her meteoric rise in 2008. Gaga was the first artist to study the so-called

“fame phenomenon”. She wanted to understand it and knew that dominating it was the key of the artistical recognition. Lady Gaga became relevant for pop culture for allying her born talent to an unique artistic intelligence. Gaga knew that being just one more talent singer wasn’t enough. Inspired on Warhol’s Factory she set up her Haus of Gaga, a group of artists that would be able to improve and elevate to a new level her artistic appeal.

Funeral of her friend and stylist Alexander McQueen. Red carpets, photoshoots, videoclips and even a simple walk on street become a spectacle and won a solo paragraph in each review. Everybody got anxious and alert for what’s comes next from Mother Monster’s illustrious presence. Be a TV interview, on red carpet or even at Alexander McQueen’s funeral (her friend and stylist), Gaga wear and behave in a capable manner to disseminate a message, an advice, a way to be heard. And so, inspired by Lady Gaga, other artists saw the success’ formula before their eyes.

Obviously, some could potentially prove their equality to her, meanwhile others passed by ridiculous and did nothing but call attention for a few moments. The change was total noticeable. From Lady Gaga to beyond, be weird became common between pop celebrities, nevertheless, Gaga still stands out among them being the matriarch of this modality.

Lady Gaga’s influence in pop culture and other artists is easy to see. Some singers, for example, abandoned the sexy look, characteristic of American rappers, to take a colorful and unrealistic look. In others cases, could also take their theatricality and began adopting risky outfits that border the weirdness. The gap left by her, allowed that several new artists could be seen and accepted in an

Do not let the image overlaps the music was a Mother Monter’s big preoccupations, after all, she knew that the key was to combine visual appeal with talent. Maybe this is the characteristic that highlights Lady Gaga from her professional colleagues and make her the biggest exponent of musical theatri-

cality nowadays. If in 5 years of career Lady Gaga was capable of leave the marks of their paws and revolutionize the industry, we can be sure that his legacy promises to increase more and more, making it one of the (perhaps the biggest) pop artist in recent history. ■

THE DIFFERENT FACES OF

LADY BY AMANDA PORT

W

e think about alter -ego, instantly, we think about Lady Gaga. And there are several reasons for this. Alter-ego could be understand, literally, as other ‘’me’’, other personality of one single person. Alter-egos trespass any limit and can become “real”, having its own story and its own personality, and sometimes, represents a side that the artist creates, too. Many artists creates this “character”, and those, mostly, are also famous and known as Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie’s alter-ego. Lady gaga, in turn, has many alter-egos, some are known, others just appeared once and are considered as. One of the most famous alter-ego from Lady Gaga is our beloved (and known by all Little Monsters): Jo Calderone. The only male that she created. He is a typical italian bad boy and Gaga’s boyfriend. Appeared for the first time, in an edition of Vogue Hommes Japan, which surprised all the little monsters to see that that man actually was our queen. Jo Calderone appeared again in 2011 on VMA “replacing” Lady Gaga, he showed masculinity, spoke several bad words

and was very relaxed. Jo performed Yoü and I on that VMA and appeared in the video of this song shortly after. Jo is the famous Nebraska Guy that Gaga says in the music, what makes us relate it sometimes with her ex-boyfriend Luc Carl. Recently, when asked on Skype chat if Jo Calderone would be back, Gaga said that they had a “fight”, which makes us think, unfortunately, that in ARTPOP, we will not see Jo. Another alter-ego of Gaga that is worth to be remembered is the robot from Era The Fame, “Candy Warhol”. Marked by blonde wig bow and colored, Candy was inspired by the artist who revolutionized pop art, Andy Warhol. Gaga created interludes with Candy for The Fame Ball Tour, in which Candy says POP ate her heart. All this reminds us so much of the new era that comes around, therefore the rumors of the return of Candy Warhol in ARTPOP are very strong, and it is worth record this name. We can not forget two alter-egos of Gaga, who despite not being so prominent but are always remember: Yuyi and Morgana Devacelli. Yuyi is a mermaid, not much else is known about her, but she is in love with a human. First appea-

red in a presentation of Gaga for Le Grand Journal. Then Yuyi also was seen In the clip of Yoü and I and on the Fashion Film of the video. Morgana Devacelli, one of the first alter-egos of Lady Gaga in her career, is very mysterious, and not much is known of her history too. Morgana appeared in some short videos of the The Fame Ball Tour. Morgana’s image appears on The Fame Monster’s CD. Few people know that Gaga had a friend named Lina Morgana at the time when both attempted to break into show businnes, however, one day, Morgana committed suicide, prompting Gaga to create this character to pay tribute to her friend. According to internet rumors, Morgana Devacelli’s alter ego would have been killed by the Fame Monster. There are many other alter-egos of Gaga, and will appear more, and who knows, we noticed some, among so many that lives inside that singer... But Gaga is an mutant artist, therefore, it is undeniable that she will create and introduce new faces from the many that exist in it, in this new age. That ARTPOP be full of alter-egos with intriguing stories. ■

DISCO HEAVEN BY NĂ?CHOLAS PONSO

A lot has been speculated about the musical content that will be present in ARTPOP. However, as the record production may have been occurring in secret, only exists probabilities based on the fans desires towards Mother’s new album. Therefore, we separated some facts of this period in order to try to find out clues of how ARTPOP will be presented to us musically. Europop, dubstep, hip pop, dirtu house? A million possibility in the hands of an extraordinary and unique artist.

Cake

like Lady Gaga

This music has become viral between the little monsters as soon as it got on the web: everybody’d think it’d be in Gaga’s new work, though it was nothing more than a joke made by one of the ARTPOP’s producer, Dj White Shadow, and Lady Gaga. Our Mother Monster had recorded this song for fun only, while DJWS had created a so-called contest, all excuses to release the song online. Cake has a discrepant style in comparison to Gaga’s previous works. It doesn’t have anything similar to Just Dance and Bad Romance, for instance, that marked her carrer. The song’s success is, indeed, undeniable: as soon as it was released, two teasers of the so-called Terry Richardson’s project went online, though nothing is known for sure. Another remarkable moment was at the end of Born This Way Ball Tour in Rio de Janeiro, when Gaga sang for 30 mil people at “Parque dos Atletas” a version of Cake.

Where’s my stache?

Such as Cake, Stache was a Gaga’s joke, made in outober 6th last year, called SoundPuzzle. According to informations given by her on twitter, the Little Monsters were supposed to make a puzzle from her voice in a Zedd’s Dj sound, one of the ARTPOP’s producers. After seventy minutos of it, Gaga announced the correct mix. Musically, Stache diverges from her previous’, due to its electronics references, because it has a remix from Zedd Dj, looking like the songs from the CD’S The Remix and Born This Way: The Remix. We can notice that Gaga’s used the social medias a lot in order to divulge her work. Cake and Stache’d had this similar characteristic. Considering by Mother Monster as a previous from her new album, she was able to achieve what she aimed when making thoses jokes: created huge expectations on her little monsters.

I’l be a Princess Die and die with you

Gaga overwelmed all her monsters that watched her show at the Born This Way Ball Tour in Melbourne, Austrália, in june 27th last year, basically because she included this song at her repertory, instead of Hair. Everybody believed that this song’d be in ARTPOP (the same thing Gaga did with You and I, during the Monster Ball Tour), however she said the opposite, claiming that Princess Die wasn’t good enough for the CD. The song was controversial, especially due to it’s content: suicide. The director of Lifeline’s communications, Chris Wagner, said the song could be a bad example for Young people, because it speaks openly about this matter. Even though, Gaga registrated Princess Die at BMI, making bigger the rumors about it’s inclusion on ARTPOP. Until now, nothing concrete is known about Princess Die’s present in Mother Monster’s new work. ■

etween speculation and desires, the ARTPOP Era goes earning its first contours. While we still try to figure out which will be the real aesthetic adopted by Lady Gaga at this stage - it is known that there will be lots of color - there is already at least a confirmation that the documentary with the adored fashion photographer Terry Richardson will come out and the focus is precisely on the new work. Recalling what Mother told in December on Twitter: “It’s a film that documents my life, the creation of ARTPOP and you.” She also thanked the photographer: “I love you, Terry. Thank you for believing in me and my fans. I follow you and your work for a long time. This is a dream come true.” The close relationship between Gaga and Richardson has lasted a few years. Together, they released the acclaimed photographic book Lady Gaga x Terry Richardson, in 2011, which gathered some 300 photos of the singer at the time of The Monster Ball Tour and was 10 weeks in the top 10 sold in the United States. Who knows both background work, has already seen the affinities. Both were born in New York, both knowledgeable about the fame monster - she’s a diva pop, he’s a photographer created in Hollywood - and especially both live without the least embarrassment to create art. In September 2012, Terry revealed a clue in his diary site.

With this image, the dissemination of the song Princess Die, which may be on the next album, we understand the preference of Gaga by the theme of royalty, because our diva revealed that Princess Diana influences your work: “Princess Diana was the most iconic martyr of fame. She died because of it. “There is a clear link with the history of this colorful world of fairy tales with princesses innocent (see Snow White, honored in the photo), victims of envy evil queens. ARTPOP has over Fame and Fame Monter than we imagine.

CAKE LIKE LADY GAGA

Beyond a professional partnership, the link between Gaga and Terry invaded personal life and there is no way to dissociate them. After all, he is one of the most sought after photographers in celebrity’s world and still finds time to follow the singer on his tours. In the whole publicity material for Born This Way was a clear influence of Richardson, expressed by the aggressiveness and black and white, features recurrent in his work. Thus, there is nothing new the contrasting colors released in two videos titled just like Terry Richardson Lady Gaga XX, made in November last year, when the tour passed through Brazil. It was said

that they would were teasers to a rap music video Cake Like Lady Gaga, DJ White Shadow creation. But, so far, seems that is a plus clue of what will be ARTPOP. A Gaga with “Louis Vuitton brown” hair, more curvy, full of designer, teasing every human being who has blood in the veins. This woman turns any gay straight and vice versa. The title of the video can not be overlooked, the opposite being the name of the photo book and a plus “X”. Could be an indication of how the documentary will be called? Only ARTPOP will tell. ■

UTHS ABOUT ARTPOP BY DIOGO LACERDA

Lady gaga is famous for loving her litte Monsters, and so, she is always looking for new ways to satisfy them – music and all sorts of news. Before the releasement of Born this way, gaga twitted various hints of music’s that would later be on the album, like Edge of glory, hair and Born this way. Now, she´s doing the same. Gaga has already confirmed lots of music names and lyrics from ARTPOP. In august, Mother Monster shared in her Instagram photos with alleged lyrics from the new album.

“WE COULD, WE COULD BELONG TOGETHER” - ARTPOP

This is one of the 7 hints that gaga shared in her instagram or twitter account, and if it´s the same as Born this way, this will possibly be the first single of ARTPOP. Over the past year, gaga as been sharing a lots of hints that can be on her next album. Tea, is one of them. Gaga twitted the lyrics of the song in October:

“IT’S BEEN OOLONG SINCE I’VE HAD A SIP AND I GET THIS FEELING, I NEED

A GREEN DETOX THE TRUTH WILL

BE THE WINNER TONIGHT -

FROM TEA ON ARTPOP” In February, she twitted what it seems to be another hint from a different song:

“WE COULD BE CAUGHT, WERE BOTH CONVICTED CRIMINALS OF THOUGHT.

- SEX DREAMS #ARTPOP”

Yet on that clime of Suspense, what she works very well in, gaga revealed for Stylist Magazine, the name of another possible song from her new CD: GUY (Girl under you). However, as well as the rest of the songs mentioned earlier, little or nothing is known about the music. As if it wasn’t enough, in last year’s September, the singer was seen wearing a lot of Burqas as a dress. This raised many rumors about if it was a new song. Later on that month, the rumor started growing when gaga, in answer to DJ Zedd in twitter, tweeted that she didn’t stop listening to Burqa all day. Besides all of the lyrics with the names of possible songs that will maybe be on the album, Mother Monster wrote disconnected hints on her social networks, what let us think that this ones are also present LGBR Magazine APRIL 2013

in the ARTPOP. “I’d rather be poor and Happy, than rich and alone” – unknown album “I try to sell myself but I am really laughing, because I just love the music not the bling” – unknown album Following the line of the mistery, in the end of 2012, Azealia Banks confirmed that she worked in 2 musics with Lady gaga for ARTPOP, supossely called Ratchet and RedFlame. After this, the rumors spread about the continuation of Telephone, saying that a collaboration between gaga beyonce and Azealia. To fortify the rumors, gaga shared a photo on her instagram account wearing an earrings exacly the same as Beyoncé wore on another photo shared in Bey´s instagram account later that year. The earrings had “RATCHET” writ-

ten on them, Beyoncé, was also wearing a cap that said the same thing. Altought, a set list of Beyonce´s new album was leaked and it was supossily written Ratchet ft Lady gaga, Azealia already confirmed in twitter that ratchet has no connection to beyoncé what so ever. On the Born this way ball in Paris, gaga sang a snippet from the song Ratchet: “You Won’t fool me again with your theater, you won´t fool me again with your Ratchet Girl”. In February of 2013, even tought Azealia isn’t shore if RedFlame is on the successor of Born this way, Azelia sang on a live stream to her fans, her rap in the music.

All of that mistery clime created by Mother Monster only make this harder for the fans that are very excited and axiouns for something related for ARTPOP. Altought gaga doenst try to create some expectitives about her new work – like Born this way – that suspence makes fans and the public in geral bite their nails off for the new record. ■

RADIO| GAGA

BY TIAGO SANTOS E EMANNUEL TAVARES

Undeniably, a wave of English singers have stood up in the selfish north american music industry. Now, it’s time for the Jessie Ware to reach out her deserved place with her debut album, Devotion, which is fulfilled with the best of R&B, 80’s and 90’s soul-pop. She managed to reach what Lana failed to do: reveal the innermost feelings supported by a sweet melancholy. Sharing her desperate and painful confessions with us, Ware becomes the object of her own work, giving us the chance of taking a look inside of the scars of her soul and turning it into memorable songs, like the triad Devotion, Wildest moments and Running, which open the album - the last one showing the pop expressions in her compositions (just like Sweet Talk and 110%).

If you didn’t notice Jessie’s melancholy in the firsts songs, that’s why you haven’t listened to Taking in Water yet. Immediately, you’ll be transported to her most intimate sufferings and, consequently, will find your own sorrow into it. Definitely, Devotion is an album for strong souls. After lending her vocals to Right Thing To Do, from the producer Aaron Jerome, Jessie Ware seduces the critics and earns her place in music scenario, with a wonderful job which slightly passes through Lo-Fi, in a plurality of styles mixed with her innermost feelings, resulting in an incredible project, that would make Lana’s producers a little bit jealous.

Jill Barber, who owns a striking voice and a notable french accent, is reaching out her space in the music industry. In her new albun -titled Chansons- there are orchestral arrangements and a predominance of the Jazz style. Furthermore, the CD has some of the classic songs from Quebec and France, which Jill has made a rereading of them, giving a french atmosphere through her melancholy. If you don’t know Jill Barber’s songs, visit her oficial site http://www.jillbarber.com/ and discover more about this muscial icon. ■

L

ady Gaga is absent. This is something that leaves all the Little Monsters helpless in a way, with fear, misgiving and hope. Since Gaga is in a complicated moment of her carrer - everyone already knows the reason - we can suppose what is happening on the anguished hearts. “Lady Gaga is lacking right now”, it is what is heard on the Little Monsters’s chats; her hits, in our cell phones, already are more than memorized, such as her coreographies. A new single is not released over a year and the way how everything happened left us without any idea about the future. However, we are pleased only by discover that a vast majority of people faithfully believes that this brief pause won’t harm our “Diva”, because it is a consensus, she is perfect in her own way and, absolutely, she wouldn’t disappoint her fans. Faith and optimism are recurring words, something evidently from Born This Way Era. Overarching all of these, what we feel is complicated and controversial. At the same time, we guess that the new song’s absence is amiss, but we must consider that it is brainstorm time. She is taking care of yourself after a hard work year. It is a long and slow process encasing a lot of things. Nonetheless, this delay helps on the marketing part, one of the Lady Gaga’s domain and boldness.■
