Dear Friends in Conservation,
I am so grateful to have partnered with each of you during another year of impressive milestones across each of our initiatives, underscoring a community that is committed to environmental preservation, ecological stewardship, and the lifelong journey of connecting with nature through experiential learning.
Our work continues to emphasize the interconnectedness of children, families, and community with the environment, fostering a culture of living, learning, growing, and playing harmoniously within the embrace of our local wild and special places. All of us here at LFOLA share the core belief that nature is not merely a destination but an integral part of our daily existence.
LFOLA culture has long celebrated the belief that “everyone has a role to play.” The thousands of hours contributed year after year by our dedicated volunteers, citizen scientist monitors, and board members demonstrate the gentle understating of the nature of our work. Our talented staff champions those who help us and aspires to cultivate nurturing environments that thrive for both people and nature.
Planting the seeds of place in young minds through our environmental education initiatives allows the roots of stewardship to grow and reinforces the notion that our local actions have global implications. From seeds to blooms, our engagement staff acknowledges the profound impact of childhood experiences with nature on shaping an ethic of lifelong environmental stewardship.
This year’s inspiring strategic land stewardship efforts underscore the importance of nurturing local ecosystems. They recognize seeds not only as time capsules but also as agents of both change and continuity, reflecting the clues from the past and indicating the direction of the future.
We are well rooted for another year of growth. Our brand-new website is an invitation to be actively involved with us, offering diverse opportunities to foster bonds with neighbors and the environment and contribute to a healthier planet. I am excited to collect the seeds from each of your story-driven experiences with nature. They are the precious intertwining of the sights, sounds, and the people of the preserves as we share a sense of hope, balance, and action through our connection with the wild and special places of Lake Forest Open Lands.

A Letter from Brett Paschke
Dear Friends of LFOLA,
Shortly after assuming the board chair role at LFOLA I referred to John Lillard as one of the Godfathers of Lake Forest Open Lands in a local publication. John Lillard, an extraordinary man who lived an extraordinary life, passed in January. Our organization benefited from John Lillard’s generosity, energy, focus, and judgement from our earliest days 50 years ago right up until his passing. John is profiled in this document (page 6) and we encourage everyone to read the profile to get a more fulsome account of the massive impact he had in shaping our mission and helping us fulfill it. We were so fortunate to have been a priority organization for John for so many years and are pleased to have the continued involvement of the Lillard family, with three current members of the family serving on the board.
In recent years, Lake Forest Open Lands has successfully taken on some of the most complex and large-scale projects in our history, including the Jean and John Greene Nature Preserve, dedication of Westfork Savanna, preparation work for the Carruthers Nature Preserve, and the anticipated new community center for the organization.
With the increased scale and complexity, the organization has put rigorous emphasis on operational efficiency through staff development, sound financial stewardship, strategic risk management, and operational advancements. The fruits of these efforts are a talented and engaged staff, robust community partnerships, and better-than-budgeted execution of the overall operating plan. The organization is in an excellent position to continue to steward our increased preserve footprint and our expanding engagement programs.
We invite all of you, our friends and supporters, to review the revamped website and participate in all that we have to offer in our programs and on the preserves. As our community grows and evolves, connecting with nature across the generations on our preserves will continue to be a unique and treasured attribute of life in Lake Forest.
We are so grateful for our skilled staff, our engaged board, our generous supporters, and our community partners. We are thankful for our history, and excited about our future.

JOHN LILLARD REMEMBERED
John Lillard was appointed to the Lake Forest Open Lands’ board and became a governor in 1980. John’s earnest and long-range thinking was quickly recognized by the board when they elected him to president in 1983. Under John’s leadership and direction, the Lake Forest Land Foundation (LFLF) was created. John hired LFOLA’s’ first executive director to assist an all-volunteer board in its focus and decision-making. He helped establish the Stewardship fund, the first effort at creating an endowment for the care of our natural areas.
John was one of the first to understand the importance of the preservation of Middlefork Savanna (front cover photo), a community treasure he never stopped advocating for. In addition to the many studies, commissions and innovative collaborations, spanning the decades of the Middlefork’s success story, the Lillards placed a large portion of their own property in a conservation easement and added 15 acres of permanently protected land just last year.
Later this year LFOLA will unveil a historical display that shares the story of John’s leadership for the Middlefork Savanna.
In 2000, John was honored as a life director. Never idle and always thinking long-term, John encouraged the Lake County Forest Preserves to re-build the historic bridge over the railroad on the west side of the Middlefork Savanna. He was awarded LFOLA’s highest honor, the Savanna Conservator Award in 2016 and remained a vital and strong voice for our organization. He inspired everyone he knew with his kind words, astute business acumen, passion for the outdoors, but most of all, the love he held for his family.
