2 women of substance shares ‘first’ title In celebrating women’s month this March, women as the center of excellence and pride had two ladies of substance with common likes, shares the “FIRST” title attached to their respective names. Tacloban City Councilor Cristina G. Gonzales was the first councilor during the 2008 election, is also the first woman to build a shelter home for domestically abused women and children in region 8 and the 1st ambassador for EV Habitat for Humanity Philippines. While Senator Loren Legarda was also the first lady legislator to author bills in protecting women and children and the 1st lady senator to advocate climate change and disaster risk reduction mitigation measures. Together, both shares the same likes

of singing Carpenter’s piece “I won’t last the day without you” as they entertained guests and visitors from Tacloban’s sociocivic organization, government officials and city leaders during the dinner party hosted by Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez and Councilor Cristina March 8, 2013 at Patio Victoria. Senator Loren had a 3-day (Mar. 7-9) Eastern Visayas visit to advocate the importance of having a geo-hazard map to lessen the occurrence of environmental incidence such as landslides. She distributed geohazard maps to some 40 Leyte municipalities and turned it over to Leyte Gov. Mimietta Bagulaya. The senator also shed light to thousands of Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) Tacloban & Ormoc campus students on the impor-

tance of waste segregation and an overview of climate change and how it affects our environment. She likewise stressed the significance of the following bills on Universal Health Care Act, the CCT program on having a one college graduate for every marginalized household , the Expanded Senior Citizens Act and the Antihuman trafficking law signed by Pres. Aquino which she authored. She was the guest speaker to the Philippine Women Judges Association- 18th National Convention held Mar. 7 at The Oriental Hotel. Both ladies of substance shares the same field of interest on health, environmental issues and human trafficking. The ladies of substance are political figures dedicated in serving its people. PCL awards Tacloban Councilor Mate

TACLOBAN CITYThe Philippine Councilors’ League (PCL) has given honor and recognition to Tacloban City Councilor Bianco Mate. PCL chairman Allan Zulueta and PCL president Alma Moreno signed a certificate of recognition last February 6, 2013 for Councilor Mate. Last March 6, 2013, Majority Floor Leader and City Councilor Edwin Chua and assistant

majority floor leaderCouncilor Cristina Romualdez turned over said certificate to Mate. Other members of the city council who were present during the said regular session commended Mate for bringing honor to Tacloban. Mate, in his speech,said he never thought that his efforts will be given such recognition since he just focused on performing his duties as a legislator.

Mate has spent 15 years at the city council. He was first elected as the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) federation president for 6 years and later elected for three terms as a councilor. One of the ordinances that he authored recently was on the use of Waraywaray language during deliberations in the city council and in the barangays. (EDEN BENUSAREYES)

Disestablishment of Palompon Watershed Forest Reserve The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), would like to inform the general public that Palompon Watershed Forest Reserve (PWFR), a protected area of Two Thousand Three Hundred Ninety-Two (2,392) hectares in the Municipalities of Palompon, Matag-ob and Villaba, Leyte, respectively, is subject for disestablishment as an initial component of NIPAS (R.A. 7586). In furtherance to this objective, the DENR Region 8 through the Protected Areas Wildlife and Coastal Zone Management Service will be conducting a comprehensive Protected Area Suitability Assessment (PASA) along with the prescribed public hearing and/or pursuant to Rule 8.2 of DAO 26, S, of 2008). In view hereof, concerned personnel of PAWCZMS will carry out all necessary activities in accordance with established procedure pursuant to Republic Act 7586, otherwise known as “The National Integrated Protected Area System (NIPAS) Act” dated June 1922 and its revised Implementing Rules and Regulation (DAO 26, S. 2008).
