The Garden Restaurant, Farington Lodge, Leyland THERE simply cannot be a more beautiful house, a more elegant setting or a more delightful place to dine in our region than Farington Lodge.

Farington Lodge is a haven of peace, well-hidden from the bustle of Stanifield Lane. Settling into the sumptuous Garden Restaurant, you could be anywhere - associated with elegance and fine dining, that is!

With predictable difficulty we made choices. The staff were helpful and friendly, without being obtrusive, before guiding us to a prime window table in the restaurant.

‘...Leyland’s hidden gem......’

After a well-earned break, with failed attempts to spot rabbits on the lawns outside, we enjoyed desserts. Once again, the chef served up a double treat.

If I had to choose my last meal - ever - it would be sticky toffee pudding for dessert, no contest!

Moist, gingery and with startling contrasts of vanilla ice cream and warm toffee sauce, there’s little else to ask for - apart from a strawberry for presentation and healthy purposes. Bliss!

Equally well-received was the Iced Bailey Parfait with Summer Fruits. Filling yet flavoursome. It was a double dream dessert course as far as we were concerned.

Love Milk, Love Local, with Deacon’s Dairy of Leyland

DEACON’S Dairy have been delivering in the Leyland area for over 100 years. Successive generations of the Deacon family have delivered milk and fresh local produce to the towns and villages for over a century.

The current owner of this established and popular family business, Martin Deacon, explained: “I took the helm in 1983 but my Great Grandmother and her sister served local customers around the ‘village’ of Leyland from a hand cart and churn. My Grandmother Maud went on to take the reins - literally - when she ventured out on a horse and cart.

Jewel in the Town Celebrating 36 years in Leyland with Atkinson Ltd Craftsman Jewellers

IT’S a story of Joinery’s loss and Jewellery’s gain as far as the people of Leyland – and beyond - are concerned.

For if Barry Atkinson, Leyland’s premier jeweller, had realised his original dream, things could have worked out differently, but he’s extremely glad they didn’t!

Atkinson Ltd Craftsman Jewellers is very much a family business which has traded from premises on Hough Lane, Leyland since 1977.

Barry (left) explained: “At school in Carlisle, my favourite subjects were practical and creative, like metalwork, woodwork, technical drawing and art. I wanted to be a joiner, but there simply weren’t any opportunities.

“In 1959, aged 15, I took up a six year apprenticeship with a jeweller and I have been ‘learning’ the trade ever since. More than 50 years later, I don’t regret any of it.”

In 1989, the Atkinsons opened a second jewellery shop, at Formby. As with Leyland, in 24 years on Merseyside they have established a polished reputation for craftsmanship and service.

Like father, like son – the Atkinson’s eldest boy Craig joined the business straight from school in Leyland and served an eight-year apprenticeship under Barry’s watchful eye. Craig now has 30 plus years’ experience in the jewellery trade.

Keeping it all ‘in-house,’ second son Paul, who served several years in the motor trade, joined the family business and for some years now has ‘fronted’ operations in Leyland.

And to all intents and purposes, Pam Melling, who has officially ‘retired’ is still helping out in the Leyland shops and is very much part of the ‘family business’ - after 30 years!

Through a child’s eyes with

WRIGHTS OPTICIANS of LEYLAND “SEEMS to me that even very conscientious parents, who would look to all their children’s needs as a matter of course, sometimes forget about eye tests!”

Leading Leyland optician Sarah Wright, owner of Wrights Opticians on Chapel Brow, is increasingly concerned about the numbers of children who never have their eyes tested.

Sarah explained: “It is frustrating, children have regular dental checks, inoculations when appropriate and other health checks but routine eye tests on a national scale - just don’t happen!

“Children themselves have no criteria to determine if their eyes need treatment unless they bump into things or miss out at school. Parents, particularly if they don’t wear glasses themselves, naturally assume all is well” Eye tests for children up to the age of 16 are totally free on the NHS. “All our opticians are very experienced in testing children - our optometrist Derek Pellowe has six children of his own! We have games, toys and activities - including Ipads and stickers - to engage them, whatever age, during the testing process.

“We make it fun, painless and nine times out of ten, no further treatment will be required.

However, if we can detect eye problems early in life it’s better for the individual if we can correct it - with glasses, patches or in some cases, exercises.”

If not detected early, children can occasionally develop a ‘lazy’ eye, which might never form properly, resulting in a squint or a lack of binocular vision. This could even affect career choices and driving

in later life.

“I’d like to see a public awareness campaign highlighting the need for children’s eye Testing. Mostly, our eye test will be a formality, but there are rare optical conditions which, if not detected early enough could lead to a lack of vision in adulthood.

“There is no cost involved for children and, if appropriate, we will take a retinal photograph which can tell us so much more about your eye for free. This normally costs £10. ” Wrights Opticians offer a wide range of glasses and contact lenses suitable for children of all ages.

Sarah commented: “We have lots of frames, different styles, colours, funky, cool designs to choose from. Plus, we fit them accurately so they are really comfortable to wear.

“Children can wear contact lenses from quite young providing they are mature and have parental back-up.

IT’S summer holiday time.. Hopefully, the weather is great allowing for outdoor play, possibly long hours at the beach.

The downside is increased outdoor activity and extra exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays also means an increased risk of damage to children’s eyes.

The answer is simple, says Sarah Wright of Wrights Opticians.

“In addition to putting the Factor 25 sun cream on, ensure your children wear sunglasses outdoors.

“Because children’s eyes are not fully formed, 70% more harmful UV reaches the delicate retina than in an adult eye. Even if a child has perfect eyes, they still need the extra protection provided by sunglasses when exposed to sunlight.

Sarah advises: “Most children like to wear sunglasses, they look cool, grown-up and can be very fashionable. The key is to make sure they are properly made with distortion-free lenses.

“Cheap, badly made sunglasses offer little protection and can even do more long-term damage than going without sunglasses at all. If in any doubt, call in and see us for advice.

The key questions you need to ask is: Are you receiving impartial financial advice? Have you completed a review of your current pension and any older pensions with previous employers?
