Most people given the choice would prefer to stay in their own home as long as possible rather than “going into a home”. We provide flexible solutions whereby our care package can change according to your needs. Our home care can be short-term, for example we can cover for your main carer whilst they take a break or help you recover from illness. An area currently in high demand is helping people whilst they recover from a hip operation when they may lose their mobility for a short period of time. The Four Seasons Restaurant at the Leyland Hotel EVERYONE knows the Leyland Hotel, next to J28 on the M6. It’s the perfect stopping off point, a great base for visitors to relax and explore our region, or even the ‘gateway’ to anywhere. But did you realise, it’s an award-winning four-star hotel with a fantastic range of facilities, not just for residents, but for local people? Business provisions for conferences, promotions and special events are impressive, particularly sumptuous Tuscany Suite. That said, we investigated the fabulous Four Seasons Restaurant and enjoyed a first-rate dining experience. If you are looking for an exclusive meal for two or a celebration party, this has everything you could wish for. Newly-arrived head chef Stuart McNorton’s specials menu is created in-house, it’s based around locally sourced ingredients, products and suppliers, producing a selection of regional dishes which reflect the variety of Lancashire cuisine – and so much more! From a relaxing drink and menu browsing in the comfortable J28 Cafe Bar, which offers alternative dining options, we moved to our table in the spacious yet subtly Italianate – complete with statues - restaurant area. Throughout, we were well looked after and guided by the staff, particularly duty manager Matthew and restaurant manager Alistair, whose knowledgeable recommendations certainly hit the spot! Our taste buds were excited by ‘amuse-bouches’ in the shape of slow-cooked pork infused with chilli, to be quickly followed by starters. As ever a difficult choice, but the top of the list ‘for two to share’ proved an inspired choice, a true delight for the senses, wonderful to look at and deliciously pleasing to taste. A wooden platter arrived bearing Shetland smoked salmon, North Atlantic prawns, Smoked Mackerel pate, tempura tiger prawns, melba toasts, cream cheese and chives, cornichons, brandied Marie Rose and tomato salsa - a feast in its own right, with a built-in ‘wow’ factor.
The list speaks for itself, needless to say, as lovers of all things seafood, it provided the perfect starters for us. From a challenging choice, everything sounded so good, I opted for the specials board. Pheasant stuffed with black pudding and wrapped in pancetta. Succulent slices of rich game, packed with a flavoursome stuffing came with a deeply delicious sauce on a bed of creamy potatoes. It provided perfect proof, as if it were needed, of chef Stuart’s creative and culinary skills. It was a delight to eat. My wife went with the main menu, deciding after much deliberation - who wouldn’t - on the Soy and ginger marinated slow-cooked belly pork, pork fillet and champ mash. With a hint of ‘East meets West,’ the delicate flavours gelled in harmony, ‘superb’ was the unreserved verdict. Both mains were perfectly complemented, in taste, presentation and colour by a crafted parcel of fresh, seasonal vegetables.
Another perfect accompaniment was our choice of wine. From a choice of four house wines, we opted for a full-bodied red from Argentina. The La Cazas Red Mendoza, according to the impressive wine list, offered a fruit jelly aroma with just a touch of light, youthful tannin. Not sure I caught all that, but it provided what the French call a ‘bon marriage’ - we loved it!

The glare necessities! WHY is a local optician recommending Hawaiian sunglasses – and not just when it’s sunny? Sarah Wright says: “In this country, people believe you should only wear sunglasses when the sun is out - and only in Summer when it’s hot. “Ultra violet light is ever present and damages your eyes in the same way that skin is damaged. Your eye can only filter out a bit of UV by itself. It needs help in the form of an UV blocking lens. The sun can cause irreversible eye damage and certainly contributes towards the formation of cataracts.” Opticians like Sarah are promoting protection of the macula, the sensitive inner lining at the back of the retina. “UV light encourages macular degeneration. Even in winter, even in Leyland you need a UV blocking lens. Europeans wear sunglasses as a matter of course, it’s not part of our culture. English light is not so intense, but UV light is present, even when overcast and grey. Over the years lots of damage can be done – that can’t be undone! “Government warnings advise against the sun, tell us to cover our skin, protect children from its harmful rays, slap on sunblock but never mention eyes which are equally vulnerable and prone to sun damage. I find that really frustrating.”

It’s not just ultra violet light which causes problems, but glare, too, can be very dangerous. “Glare is particularly prevalent in winter months when the sun is low. It too can damage your eyes. Ordinary sunglasses, which are dip-dyed, will soak up UV light which is good but they don’t cut glare, just make it darker so driving can be dangerous. “Any eye protection is good, but I’m recommending Maui Jim’s which are imported from Hawaii. They are polarised with seven layers of filters, like layers on a cake. Each filter eliminates a different type of glare. They don’t change colour in sunshine but cut out every scrap of glare. “Maui Jim’s were originally made for sports, particularly deep sea fishermen, who are subjected to intense glare, as are skiers and surfers. But they do a full range of glasses and specifications and are ideal for everyday use.” Wright’s Opticians in Leyland are the specialist Maui Jim’s distributor in this area. “People are amazed at how they perform, the feedback has been amazing. Your Health and Fitness with Diane Oakden Healthy Weight Loss Tips How confusing is advice on weight loss? This time of year many of us have set out to lose some weight. We get obsessed with the weighing scales and often become disappointed and feel like we have failed to lose as much weight as we wanted to. In terms of health a better way to get health results is to reduce fat around your middle -so measure your waist. Take a tape measure and place it round your waist, over your navel and measure on your out breath. Make a note of this measurement. Measure again 2 weeks later when you have consistently made changes to your diet. It is important to find a way of eating that is sustainable so lots of vegetables (not potatoes) and good quality protein eg fish, chicken (tofu, pulses for vegetarians). This really has been shown to be the best way to lose weight and keep it off – you don’t go hungry and suppress the metabolism in the way low-calorie diets do. Do a checklist
How much alcohol do I drink? Can I reduce or eliminate it? How much sugar or refined carbohydrates (eg white flour, white rice, pasta) do I eat? Can I reduce or eliminate them? Money Matters with Derbyshire Booth Financial Management Ltd An Individual Savings account (ISA) is a tax efficient savings wrapper. Within an ISA you pay no capital gains and no further tax on your income, making it one of the most tax-efficient savings vehicles available. If you are planning to open or transfer an existing ISA, you have until the 5th April 2013 to do this. If you miss this deadline, you’ll lose your £11,280 allowance for the 2012/13 tax year forever. So the sooner you take advantage of your allowance the better. What types of ISA are there? There are two types of ISAs: Cash ISAs and Stocks & Shares ISAs. Cash ISAs work in the same way as a normal savings account. You choose if you want a fixed rate, an instant access or a regular savings account. The only difference is you do not pay tax on the interest that you earn. With Stocks & Shares ISA you can invest in individual shares or investments funds such as unit trusts or OEICs. However you pay 10% tax on dividend income and no capital gains tax. Who can have an ISA? Anyone who is 16 years or over and a UK resident can save money in a tax efficient cash ISA but to save in a stocks and shares ISA you need to be at least 18. As of April 2012 the ISA limit increased for everyone to £11,280 per tax year. Of this, the maximum you can put into a cash ISA is £5,640, and then the remainder can be invested into a stocks & shares ISA. Alternatively you may choose to allocate the entire £11,280 to a stocks & shares ISA. Will ISAs always be tax efficient? The Government has promised to keep ISAs indefinitely. However the tax treatment of ISAs may change in the future.
Can I transfer my existing ISA? You can transfer the money saved in a cash ISA or stock & shares ISA to a new stocks and shares ISA with another provider, even if it was saved in a previous tax year, without affecting your annual allowance for this current year. Preparation : 5 mins; Cooking time: 15 mins; Serves 4 Ingredients 4 skinless salmon fillets, 150g/4oz each 3 tbsp oyster sauce 2 tbsp teriyaki sauce 1 tbsp honey 1 tbsp oil (a mix of vegetable and sesame) 1 tbsp finely grated fresh root ginger 1 garlic clove, finely sliced 1 red chilli, de-seeded, finely sliced 500g/1lb 2oz mixed green veg eg: bok choi, sugar snaps, broccoli Method 1 Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Place the salmon on a baking tray. Mix together the oyster sauce, teriyaki and honey, then brush a little
over the fish. Roast for 8-10 mins until glazed and just cooked through. Set aside. 2 Heat the oil in a wok, then fry the ginger, garlic and chilli for 1 min. Stir-fry the broccoli or any larger, harder veg for 3 mins, then add the leafy veg and cook for 1-2 mins more. Stir in the rest of the sticky sauce, heat through and serve with the fish. In May and June the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network is supporting the national NHS campaign to raise awareness of lung cancer symptoms. Finding lung cancer early makes it more treatable. People who have symptoms should go to their doctor straight away. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer. There are 33,000 new cases every year, killing more than any other form of cancer. It affects people of all ages but is most common in over 50s. Although more common in smokers, around 1 in 8 people with lung cancer has never smoked. The risk gets worse as you get older, but finding it early improves the chances of successful treatment. You need to see a doctor straight away if you have been coughing for the past three weeks or more. Other symptoms of lung cancer include: A cough that has got worse, repeated chest infections, coughing up blood or breathlessness, feeling more tired than usual, losing weight for no obvious reason, an ache or pain in your chest or shoulder that has lasted some time. If you notice symptoms, tell your doctor right away. Seeing your doctor quickly may save your life. Please don’t ignore the symptoms or put off a trip to the
doctor. You won’t be wasting anyone’s time. If you know anyone with symptoms, insist they see a doctor. It’s probably nothing serious, but they should get it checked out. Ernie Burton, 62, from Blackburn was diagnosed with lung cancer in June 2010 after he noticed he had been coughing for over three weeks. Following chemotherapy and surgery Ernie is now living each day to the full. He said: ‘I’d urge anyone experiencing any of the symptoms of lung cancer to see their doctor immediately, don’t think you’re wasting their time and try not to be scared. I thank my wife for making me go to my doctor when I did, I know I’d have probably put it off longer otherwise. The earlier the cancer is diagnosed the better your chances of survival’.
