Leader Comment July 2019 WELCOME to our July magazine. Our sincere congratulations to everyone involved in Leyland Festival 2019. The ‘summer’ weather did its best but the people of Leyland defied the showers and made it all worthwhile. Just as the traditional parade got underway, the heavens opened, but the floats with this year’s theme of ‘Musicals’, the classic cars, bands, dancers and more ensured this year’s spectacle got off to a cracking start. The hundreds who lined the streets transferred to the Park. Here, live bands, displays, fairground rides, Paws in The Park, food and drink and more kept the party going throughout the day. There was, literally, something for everyone to enjoy.

He said: “Riding in the Popemobile has to be one of the best experiences I have had. The crowds were phenomenal , Leyland did itself proud.” Well done to our newly elected Mayoress and Mayoress, we wish them well as they carry out their civic duties in the year ahead. Meanwhile, here at Leyland Leader we are celebrating our fourteenth anniversary. How that suddenly happened, it’s hard to figure out, but we are where we are, 14 years down the road—and boy, have we walked some roads in that time! Leyland Leader, the Independent Business magazine for Leyland, first hit the streets of PR25 (and later PR26) back in May 2005 and we’ve trod many miles since then. It’s been a great journey, though, we’ve met lots of fascinating people, made lots of friends, upset only a few (!) and personally delivered more than half a million magazines. We are eternally grateful to the hundreds of businesses, trades, services, individuals and organisations who have supported us along the way. Some local companies have advertised in every issue and we have reached number 171!

Headlining the live entertainment this year was local star and ex-Liberty X frontman Kevin Simm (pictured above), now with Wet Wet Wet. The crowds thrilled to his performance along with that of many other talented local entertainers. Check out pages 33 and 64 for more coverage - well done to all those involved in the year-long planning and preparation. It was wonderful! Leyland Festival was officially opened by our new Mayor, Councillor Harry Hancock, along with the Mayoress of South Ribble, his wife Marion. But not before Keith and Ruth Bradshaw they had led the 2019 Festival Parade in the newly restored prestigious Popemobile.

No pane, no gain for Misty Window Fixer

ONE Leyland man’s business vision could be great news for everyone else’s vision - and much more, besides! For when it comes to windows, doors, handles, hinges and locks, Kirk Williams has seen and done it all. Now, with 25 years’ experience of all aspects of the double glazing industry under his belt, the enthusiastic entrepreneur has set up his own business as Misty Kirk Williams, Leyland’s Misty Window Fixer Window Fixer. Kirk says: “All the glass and hardware I Kirk, now 46, explained: “Around 25 years ago I started out on the factory floor use for Misty Window Fixer is sourced locally. Restaurant Review With Camerons at Fox Lane Sports & Social Club WE haven’t exactly been trying, but we think we might just have stumbled upon THE best Sunday lunch in Lancashire (or beyond) right here in Leyland – and the rest of the food on the menu is equally awesome! Earlier this year, award-winning restaurateurs Chris and Sue Cameron took over the catering responsibilities at Fox Lane Sports and Social Club and the results are truly inspiring. Traditional Sunday lunch? True, all the regular ingredients you might expect are present, but in Chris’ hands they are transported to a different level. This is fine dining at your local Sports Club and we are delighted with it! Camerons serve lunches every Friday (12 noon -2pm, Saturday and Sunday (12 noon 4pm) and Sunday Breakfast - you got to see it to believe it - from 9.30 –11am. Ladies’ cricket in the sunshine provided the perfect backdrop for our visit to Leyland’s newest dining experience. With Chris busy creating in the kitchen, Sue Cameron takes charge of front of house. The restaurant was buzzing nicely, deservedly so, as we received the warmest of welcomes, from Sue and Rosanna it’s a real team effort! And so, in the unlikely surroundings of your local Sports and Social Club, began one of the best dining experiences we have ever had in our town - and there’s been quite a few! Talk about Starters for Ten, ours were worth at least eleven! I had four of the fattest, freshest pan-seared scallops known to man (pictured). These beauties were partnered

with Parma Ham, Pea Puree, Pea Shoots and decorated with edible flowers. It looked too good to eat - but that feeling didn’t last! Across the table, another eyecatching presentation. The menu term ‘Halloumi Caesar Salad’ does not do it justice. It tasted incredible, I am assured, and once again, the presentation was delightful. A wonderful start to an exquisite meal. With six tempting mains choices, it could have been a challenge but not for me - it was Sunday lunchtime, after all! After the most generous of starters, Ruth was happy with a Seafood Platter which delivered exactly that and proved to be more than enough (almost!) for her main meal. Succulent prawns, scallops, sea bass and,

Seafood Platter tuna were, once again, perfectly cooked , crafted and precisely presented. The ladies’ cricket outside was a bit of a giveaway, but the meal could have been straight out of any high-class Mediterranean Riviera restaurant. It was an explosion of wonderful tastes of the sea, she claimed. Dressed with lemon

‘…...THE best traditional Sunday roast...’ and the lightest of salad garnishes, what more could you want? A glass of Pinot Grigio, perhaps. The dry Italian white on offer at Fox Lane proved an ideal accompaniment to the seafood - and for a light lunchtime drink it also went well with my traditional Sunday roast (pictured). So it arrived, my vote for THE best traditional Sunday dinner around. A crisp, golden Yorkshire pudding sat proudly above several thick slices of pink, succulent roast beef. It was freshly cooked, as ordered, and was a delight to demolish. Sprouting broccoli lent added crunch (and healthy vitamins), along with roasted carrot, creamed potatoes and everyone’s favourites, golden, crispy roast potatoes. It was another generous portion, terrific value, but traditional home-cooked cuisine of the highest order, courtesy of a chef who clearly knows his craft. You really need to try it, it was special! Don’t just take my word, get down to Camerons at the earliest opportunity booking is advised, as word is getting round. The vegetarian ‘main’ option at the time of our visit was Roasted Pepper stuffed with Moroccan Couscous, which I’m confident would be likewise, beautifully created and equally delicious. Suitably satisfied, the award-winning Camerons, had been everything we’d hoped for

23

and more. However, after a well-earned break, we approached the sweet choices with heightened anticipation. Cherry and Almond Frangipane with ice cream (pictured) across the table and for me, I completed the traditional Sunday lunch with home-made warm Apple Pie and the smoothest of custard. Trust me, both desserts looked and tasted as good as they promised. On the next table, a party were enjoying Afternoon Tea, with accompanying whoops of delight. If that’s your scene, then head for Camerons, the home-made Afternoon Teas, just like everything else, are on a higher level. Sue Cameron says: “We also cater for the functions here at Fox Lane. Book through the club and we will take on the catering enquiries from there. There are sample menus for customers to choose from and we encourage a face to face meeting to discuss needs as the menus are not set in stone. “We would happily prepare a bespoke menu according to their requirements. We also welcome any enquiries regarding outside catering.” Camerons is a fantastic and welcome addition to the dining options in Leyland. It’s not a ‘night out’ venue (yet!), but we congratulate Chris, Sue and team and highly recommend their new venture in our town. Go and see them - very soon!

Rain fails to dampen Leyland Festival spirit! Despite some heavy rain showers, people turned out in their thousands to enjoy all the fun and entertainment of this year’s Leyland Festival. Thousands of visitors lined the streets of Leyland to see the traditional festival parade spread a carnival atmosphere right through the town. Floats, bands and walking groups organised by local businesses, charities and community groups were inspired by the festival’s ‘musicals’ theme. Their bright decorations, costumes and choreography created a rainbow of colour, entertainment and energy that brought smiles to the faces of onlookers. The vehicle parade was bigger and better this year, with an eclectic mix of old and new. Spectators were treated to an array of rare, unusual and eye-catching vehicles with everything from a Tuk Tuk to the latest Lamborghini and Ferrari supercars. Of course, everyone was delighted to see the return of the iconic Popemobile leading the festival parade with the Mayor and Mayoress of South Ribble on board. Over on Worden Park visitors were treated to a huge selection of entertainment and activities for all the family. There were hundreds of organisations involved, all providing something different for families to enjoy. Kevin Simm’s headline performance topped off an amazing line-up of local talent. This year there were three stages – the main stage, acoustic stage and afternoon tea stage. Each had a completely different vibe for people to enjoy. The ever-popular Paws in the Park dog show was a highlight for many once again, as was the growing festival car show ‘Cars in the Park’. And visitors definitely didn’t go hungry or thirsty with a huge selection of food and drink retailers and producers throughout the park. Organisers were delighted with the day, “We were thrilled to welcome so many

people to this year’s Leyland Festival, especially given the unkind weather. But the rain didn’t dampen the festival spirit one bit!” said Tony Harrison, Leyland Festival Committee Chairman. He continued: “Everywhere you looked there were smiling faces and laughter, people making memories with their families and friends that they will cherish. All the many hours of planning and preparation are worth it when you see the joy Leyland Festival brings to so many people. “There are so many people to thank, my fellow committee members, our sponsors, all the businesses, organisations and individuals who take part on the day, South Ribble Borough Council and, of course, our amazing volunteers. “We are incredibly proud of what we achieve with Leyland Festival. It is a celebration of everything that is good in our local community and an opportunity for us to share that with visitors from near and far. “We love how the festival brings the whole community together and captures and amplifies the fabulous community spirit of Leyland. Long may that continue!” Leyland Festival Committee will be enjoying a few weeks of well-earned rest before attention turns to planning next year’s event. Watch this space!

Fish Recipe of the Month sponsored by The Fish Plaice

This sweet-mustard dressing would work beautifully with trout or salmon too. Ingredients 4 white fish fillets 1tbsp olive oil Juice of ½ lemon 1½-2tsp Dijon mustard 1tsp caster sugar 1tbsp capers, drained and rinsed 1tbsp freshly chopped dill 100g bag rocket leaves 200g (7oz) cherry tomatoes, halved Method 1 Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan) mark 6, and line a baking tray with foil. Lay fish fillets on the foil, skin down (do not grease the foil). Brush over a third of the olive oil and season well. Cook in the oven for 12-15 mins until the fish is firm and opaque. 2 Meanwhile, make the dressing by whisking together the remaining

olive oil with the lemon juice, mustard, sugar, capers and dill. Season to taste (add a few drops of water if the dressing tastes too sharp). Put the rocket and cherry tomatoes in a bowl and stir through a third of the dressing. 3 Use a fish slice to scoop the fillets off the foil, leaving behind the skin. Divide the salad and fish fillets among four plates, then spoon the remaining dressing over the fish. Serve immediately. Leyland Market Tuesday, Friday, Saturday

In the Garden

A monthly gardening column with Debbie Noblett from The Plant Stall, Leyland Market

July has arrived and that puts us right in the middle of Summer (supposedly) there are many jobs to be done. If you’ve grown your own potatoes, when the green tops appear, keep earthing them up so they don’t appear near the surface of the soil, light can turn them green and produce chlorophyll and also solanine a very mild toxin. When strawberries develop runners, peg them into the ground where they will root, they can be cut off later and potted, or if you don’t want any more plants, they can be removed. Any climbing plants can have the old woody bits removed and any new thinner shoots tied loosely onto the trellis. Cut down perennial geraniums to encourage new growth and a second flowering, and continue to dead head perennials like lupins and delphiniums to encourage new growth and blooms, removing all dead leaves and giving them a general tidy. Keep on dead heading roses to encourage more flowers, and keep a look out for aphids. As soon as you see them, wash them off with soapy water until they disappear, if you get overrun with them you may need a chemical spray.

Keep an eye out for black spot on roses and remove any affected leaves as they appear. Keep on dead heading hanging baskets and giving plants like petunias and bacopa a good trim back, this will encourage new growth. Feed them weekly, as by July there will be a mass of roots and huge plants in a very small amount of compost. A simple watering idea is to cut the base off a long necked cordial bottle, insert the neck well into the centre of your basket and fill with water, the plants grow around it, the water is absorbed slowly and gets straight to the roots. July is also a good time to trim Wisteria, trim the new whippy side shoots from the main branch about 20cms from the base. Bearded Iris can be divided. July is a good time to spray weeds with a large surface leaf area, buy a systemic weed killer (glyphosphate based are quite good) as they are absorbed through the leaf and taken down to the root, it will be at least one week to 10 days before they start to wilt. Remove any seed weed heads like dandelions to stop them spreading, and keep on with weeding and dead heading. Happy summer gardening. Debbie
