verse, or just the same old story? Ultimately, we write it, the choice is ours.” That’s the challenge laid down by writer and thinker Alex Morritt as we embark on another new year’s journey. Welcome to January. Happy New Year 2020, let’s hope it’s going to be a good 12 months for everyone in our town, businesses, residents, families, one and all. New Year’s Resolutions, do people still make them? I often try, usually mine are to do with fitness and/or weight loss, but seldom last until February. Each year, we shake off old habits and stake out plans for a better self and brighter future (allegedly). Good luck with yours (if appropriate). Actor Cary Grant said: “I propose never to make a resolution that won’t be as important on the 8th of April or the 10th of July as it is on the 1st of January.” That sounds good to me, going forward, every day is precious and as important as the next. Happy New Year 2019! At Leyland Leader, we are going into our 15th year in business, serving our town and, hopefully, providing a useful service with our independent business directory. Our Resolution is to continue with more of the same. Leyland Leader works in tandem with BB4B (Breakfast Before Business), a flourishing business network group
within Leyland. January 2020 sees the 100th meeting of this effective, friendly group which regularly attracts over 40 guests from the widest range of businesses and organisations to its monthly meetings. Support, Lodgings & Emergency Accommodation for Young People SLEAP is a local charity seeking to provide young people with somewhere safe to live, giving them the support they need to move on as confident and independent young adults. We place young people in local homes. They get a bedroom in a real home, with supportive, caring adults, helping them adjust, learn how to look after themselves and are around to chat. Host families are paid rent for their room and are trained and supported by the SLEAP team. SLEAP’s youth workers provide extra support helping young people get back into education or training, find jobs, sort out issues around debt, health, relationships and more. SLEAP also works with young people who are not staying with us but that may need help to sort aspects of their life that may place them at risk of becoming homeless (job applications, work experience, benefits, settling into accommodation, help to avoid family breakdown). Really special are the monthly group activities. These sessions help combat isolation, build positive relationships with peers, gain new skills and promote better physical and mental wellbeing. We visit the beach, or trampoline centre, perhaps a food & hygiene certificate or have a ‘bake off’. Recently we did some painting and gardening at Buckshaw Retirement Village. They enjoyed it so much they are doing the Dementia Friends training so they can go back and run fun sessions with residents. SLEAP is 27 years old, it started in 1992 when clergy and people from different churches in Leyland started talking about the need to help homeless young people. There were no projects around then, it wasn’t uncommon for desperate people to
turn up at churches or clergy homes asking for help, nowhere to go. The Leyland Churches Homelessness Project was born with a group of volunteers who provided emergency accommodation in homes on a ‘B&B’ basis. In 1995 this project became a registered charity, SLEAP, with trustees representing different churches across Leyland. SLEAP is a Christian organization. Our Christian faith inspires the values we choose, the service we provide and the needs we respond to. The Bible challenges us to love with actions and not just with words and to live with hope even in the face of despair. This is why we do what we do in the way that we do it. Providing a safe home with a helping hand for a confident future – This is our mission and there’s many ways in which you can get involved and help e.g. food or toiletries donations (we distribute food parcels to young people we support). You can fundraise for us or send a donation. You can volunteer (helping with group work, office help, sharing skills). You could become a Trustee. If you have a spare bedroom, perhaps think being a host family? If you pray, please pray for us. Pray for our work, the young people we support and the resources we need to help more. Opticians merge to create Leyland’s ‘premier independent eyecare destination’
Two independent Leyland opticians have merged their practices in an exciting move for the town’s eyecare. Eyesentials Opticians and Leyland Opticians joined forces last month and are trading from the Eyesentials site.

Serves four; Preparation time : less than 30 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes to 1 hour Ingredients 150g/5oz sun-dried tomatoes 30g/1oz fresh basil 75ml/2½fl oz olive oil, plus extra for oiling 8 slices Parma ham 4 cod fillets Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method 1 Pre-heat the oven to 180C/Gas 4. Place the sun-dried tomatoes and basil into a blender or food processor and blend to a paste. Gradually drizzle in the olive oil to slacken the paste. 2 Cut out four squares of greaseproof paper, approximately 25cm/10in x 25cm/10in in size, and lay two slices of ham on each piece of paper to overlap. 3 Spread the sun-dried tomato paste over the Parma ham slices and lay a cod fillet on top of each pair. Roll up the paper around each fillet to make a cigar-shaped parcel and carefully
remove the paper from each piece of wrapped cod. 4 Place the parcels onto a lightly oiled baking tray. Roast for 15-20 minutes until cooked all the way through. Serve at once with vegetables of choice

A monthly gardening column with Debbie Noblett from The Plant Stall, Leyland Market
January, it’s straight after Christmas and as we enter 2020 and think about new year resolutions, diets, exercise and giving things up, each year I promise myself to take more care of my garden, that’s my New Years resolution! In January start with cleaning and sharpening garden tools, wash and disinfect empty pots and tubs, clean the greenhouse and water butts out, then everything will be ready for the Spring.
Prepare for the gardening year ahead by starting to prune apple, pear, blackcurrant, gooseberry and redcurrant bushes, while they are dormant. If you have rhubarb plants, putting a bucket over them will give you tender pink stems in about eight weeks time. January is also a good time to order and plant fruit bushes, such as currants,
Plant them in a well sheltered prepared bed, for some tasty summer fruits.
If you’re thinking of sowing your own seeds this year, now is the time to be planning, ordering and thinking quantities, seeds can go a long way. It’s a good time to prune rose bushes while they are dormant, cut back ornamental grasses, willows, and take all the dead, yellowing leaves off hellebores. Don’t forget to feed the birds with fatballs, birdseed and peanuts, and encourage hedgehogs in, by leaving a few leaves around and putting an upturned plastic box with an arch cut in each end, and a saucer of water and kitten biscuits, which contain all the nutrients they need to survive the winter. We have Spring to look forward to when everything in the garden starts to wake up. Happy New Year!

Against the toughest of opposition, Leyland Leader’s quiz team has secured a triple triumph in the town’s Annual Team Brain Quiz – and in three instalments has presented £1050 to Rosemere Cancer Foundation. This year’s quiz, as ever, was organized extremely efficiently and professionally by Leyland’s 41 Club, supported by Round Table and held at Fox Lane Sports & Social Club. Once again first prize, along with retention of the impressive Reg Smith Shield, was £350 to the team’s nominated charity. Leyland Leader also won in 2018 and back in 2016 – the team had other commitments and were unable to defend their crown in 2017 due to other commitments. There were 18 teams involved and, in the closest of contests, Leyland Leader emerged victorious again, ahead of Leyland United Reformed Church in second and third-placed South Ribble Rotary, who also donated their cheque of £150 to Rosemere. Rebecca Arestidou, Rosemere Cancer Foundation Area Fundraiser, was delighted to receive another cheque from Leyland Leader. She called into Leyland to collect the cheque from team members Keith Bradshaw, Ruth Bradshaw and Bob Fleet.
The fourth member of the quartet, Mansel Pope was out of town. Dan Hill, Chief Executive of Rosemere Cancer Foundation, said: “Thank you to Keith and the Leyland Leader team for their ongoing support of Rosemere. They have once again been crowned Quiz Masters and generously donated their prize winnings to Rosemere. Their continued support enables Rosemere to fund projects and services that make a huge difference for local cancer patients in Lancashire.”

With Towngate Shoe Repairs
LEYLAND’S premier cobbler is celebrating 25 years of his business. Congratulations to genial Craig Statters, the owner and driving force of Towngate Shoes.
When it comes to talking cobblers, Craig’s your man - he’s been at the top of his game, and Towngate Shoes has been successfully serving the people of Leyland for a quarter of a century. Craig explained; “I started as an apprentice cobbler in Preston in 1993. It took three years to
finish my apprenticeship and by 1996 I was installed as manager at 84 Towngate - the business I now own.” Towngate Shoe Repairs had opened in 1994 and within three years, the joint owners decided to dissolve the partnership. This enabled Craig to take over the business and he’s never looked back. Despite the sign above the doors, Craig doesn’t exclusively repair shoes. Since taking over, he has added a whole range of skills and services. These include key cutting, engraving, trophies for schools and sports clubs, watch batteries and straps and equestrian tack repairs. He’s a very useful man to know! A traditional time served cobbler, a master craftsman, here’s to the next 25 years, well done Craig!
