Giving Families Options School District Five has long-placed a priority on growing academics through magnet and other offerings. It is our commitment to provide families with the choices they need to make their students successful. Magnet schools have courses in special subjects and are designed to attract students from all parts of a community.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT Several years ago, I created the hashtag “#PrideIn5” to highlight all of the things that happen in our great school district.

From amazing students and parents to truly dedicated educators and support staff, I have #PrideIn5 for so many reasons and am honored to serve as your superintendent.

My charge to staff this school year and in 2018-2019 was to “Know Thy Impact.”

This quote from renowned educational researcher John Hattie causes us to pause and realize that everything we do as staff in School District Five has an impact on students and the community.

A Focus on Achievement

School District Five of Lexington & Richland Counties has a long legacy of excellence in academics, the arts, student activities, programs, and community service. The outstanding work of our students, staff, and community earned state and national recognition, including national rankings by U.S. News & World Report and Palmetto Finest Schools honors for two of our schools. Three schools in our district became nationally certified magnet schools, while two schools received Whole Child Awards from

SC-ASCD. School District Five also hosted the 2019 Inquiry Matters Conference and became the first-of-its kind Professional Development SchoolDistrict in partnership with the University of South Carolina. Our incredible team of teachers, staff, and administrators also earned several awards this year, including two state principal of the year titles and the District Level Administrator of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators.

We are very proud to say our district prepares students for success in school, in the work place, and in life thanks to the extraordinary impact of our students, faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and community. Academic Excellence Exceptional instruction is the cornerstone of developing our students’ critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Students in our classrooms identify research questions, evaluate sources, analyze information, and develop informed conclusions. Intentionally-designed learning experiences allow our students to become problem-solvers as they reflect on evidence and propose new ideas, arguments, and solutions. This emphasis results in numerous academic accolades each year.

School District Five students rank among the highest in South Carolina on tests such as the ACT and SAT. Yearly, eighth grades students from

our middle schools are named Junior Scholars, and students from our high schools are named National Merit Scholars.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

School District Five

Lexington-Richland School District Five Board of Trustees is the district’s official policy-making entity. The board formulates policies to enhance educational opportunities in the district by interpreting the needs and goals of the community. The board also seeks to develop and maintain communication among the various constituencies served by schools in District Five. *Board members, as of July 1 , 2019.

ROBERT GANTT

Chairman rgantt@lexrich5.org Robert Gantt has been involved in School District Five for more than 30 years, serving in various capacities as a volunteer and 15 years as an elected School Board member. He served as president of the Irmo Elementary Parent Teacher Association, chairperson of the IES School Improvement Council, member of Dutch Fork Elementary SIC, member of Irmo Middle Parent Teacher Student Organization, chairperson of the Dutch Fork Middle SIC, chairperson for the Dutch Fork High School SIC, member of the Parents Advisory Cabinet, Calendar Committee, Building Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Personnel Committee and Fine Arts Committee. Mr. Gantt volunteered as a bus driver for several athletic teams at Dutch Fork High School. Mr. Gantt has served as a member of the School Board since November 2000, being re-elected in 2004 and 2008. While a member of the School Board, he has served as Board Secretary, Vice-Chairman and Chairman from 2008 to 2013. Mr. Gantt also serves on the Board of Directors for the South Carolina School Boards Association, currently serving as President for 2015.

BETH HUTCHISON

Vice Chairman bhutchison@lexrich5.org Beth Hutchison has been actively involved in School District Five for over 25 years. She has volunteered in the classroom, served as PTO president at Harbison West Elementary, chaired Irmo High’s School Improvement Council, and served as the chair of the successful 1996 District Five School Bond referendum resulting in new classrooms and renovated facilities across the District. She has served as the secretary, vice chairman and chairman of the School District Five Board of Trustees and on several district-wide committees. Ms. Hutchison is student-focused, a champion for early childhood education, an advocate for environmental sustainability and awareness, a supporter of the District’s magnet school programs and a strong advocate for the teachers and staff. She especially enjoys watching each District Five student receive their diploma from Irmo, Dutch Fork, Chapin, and Spring Hill high schools. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism with a Public Relations focus and a Master’s degree in Public Administration, both from the University of South Carolina.

MICHAEL CATES

Secretary michaelcates@lexrich5.org Michael Cates is a Real Estate Broker and Certified Real Estate Educator. He is the owner and chief instructor of Southeastern Real Estate Academy. Mr. Cates is also the Minister of Music for Saluda River Baptist Church. He has been an active volunteer in the district for over 10 years. He has been a member or chaired both SIC and PTO at five different schools. He has been an active member of the Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Cabinet. He has served the district as a member of the middle school technology task force, Chair of the Comprehensive Health Education Board Advisory Committee, and was a member of the AdvancedEd accreditation committee. Mr. Cates has also served on two state-level committees for the Education Oversight Committee.

NIKKI GARDNER

Board Member ngardner@lexrich5.org Nikki Gardner has been involved in School District Five since the oldest of her 4 children started Kindergarten, 15 years ago. She has served in a myriad of positions from homeroom mom to leadership capacity in PTO’s, SIC’s, and various booster clubs at Chapin Elementary, Intermediate, Middle, and High School, Harbison West Elementary School, and Spring Hill High School. Ms. Gardner’s experience with her own children in School District Five has made her a devotee to each and every student, a teacher advocate, a believer in intervention and early childhood education, a supporter of the arts and athletics, and a proponent of magnet schools and career centers. All of her experiences have made her a huge fan of School District Five. Ms. Gardner has a Bachelors of Science in zoology from Brigham Young University graduating in 1998 and has spent the last 20 years raising and advocating for her 4 children as a stay-at-home mom.

JAN HAMMOND

Board Member jhammond@lexrich5.org Jan Hammond has been an active member of the School District Five community for over 40 years and is currently a teacher at Northside Middle School in Lexington District Two. Ms. Hammond has been involved in the district one way or another since 1973. She began her teaching career as a social studies teacher, Irmo Varsity Cheerleading coach, and served as a board member on the original Education Foundation. Mrs. Hammond was elected to the school board in 2002, and served as Vice-Chair, and was elected again in 2008. Mrs. Hammond has also served in volunteer positions at the state level: Appointed by Governor Sanford to his Education Task Force, served on Governor Haley’s Education Accountability Task Force, appointed by State Superintendent Rex to his Education Task Force, served on a legislative committee to report to the Education Oversite Committee on Accountability in 2012, and was the President of the Richland-Lexington Winthrop University Alumni Association.

She is a graduate of Winthrop University and has a Masters in Teaching from the University of South Carolina.

KEN LOVELESS

Board Member kloveless@lexrich5.org Ken Loveless is a Chapin resident and a longtime supporter of School District Five schools. He’s president of Loveless Commercial Contracting, the commercial/industrial general contracting company he founded 33 years ago. Mr. Loveless has contributed much time and volunteer effort in support of schools in School District Five, including serving on the citizen-advisory board of the Center for Advanced Technical Studies and helping establish the District 5 Foundation. He has personally helped fund programs related to math and engineering, including the project-based Math Matters program and the Leaphart LEAP engineering magnet program. His extensive community involvement also includes ten years as chairman of the Town of Chapin Architectural Review Board and six years as a board member of the Greater Chapin Community Endowment. Mr. Loveless has a bachelor of science degree from Clemson University and a masters of business administration degree from the University of South Carolina.

ED WHITE

Board Member ewhite@lexrich5.org Ed White is an attorney with Nelson Mullins Riley and Scarborough, L.L.P. He is married and the father of two sons and a daughter, one of whom attends Dutch Fork High School, one who graduated Dutch Fork High School and attends Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, and one who graduated Dutch Fork High School and attends the University of South Carolina in Columbia. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina, a J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law and a LL. M. Taxation degree from New York University School of Law. He is a certified public accountant and an attorney and partner with Nelson, Mullins, Riley and Scarborough, L.L.P. Ed and his family are members of Riverland Hills Baptist Church.

Ballentine Elementary students continue to excel in reading and math and consistently perform above the state average on SC PASS and SC Ready.

In addition, students participate in related areas such as Spanish, physical education, technology, and visual and performing arts to provide wellrounded world class learning experiences. That, combined with core content subjects, encourages creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and teamwork.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Chapin Elementary School truly is a special place for learning. Each day, our students arrive and are encouraged to embrace our pledge to be responsible, respectful, and ready to learn. Staffed by a dynamic faculty of teachers and support staff, we are able to challenge our students, provide them with a safe and supportive learning environment, and establish a solid pathway for social and academic growth.

Chapin Elementary School is “Committed to Excellence for all Students.” Our goal is to increase student achievement through establishing positive relationships, participating in purposeful collaboration, and providing intentional instruction to meet students’ individual needs.

PBIS Crazy Socks Day! Celebrating our friendships!

Academic Excellence Academic excellence abounds at Chapin Elementary School. Teachers design instruction to provide maximum benefit for students through differentiation of instruction through the use of small groups in reading and math. This allows our teachers to develop a solid understanding of the specific academic needs of students. Teachers also utilize the data team process to ensure student success in both reading and writing. Third and fourth grade teachers focused on helping students deepen their understanding of text dependent analysis and how to cite evidence in their reading to form conclusions.

Teachers in kindergarten through second grade worked on the fundamental aspects of reading and writing to support learners at all levels. In addition to data teams and the use of small groups, students across our school also demonstrated learning through song and dance.

First graders shined during a performance about our solar system, which helped extend and deepen their knowledge of science standards. Third graders performed a musical based on SC history and also were able to learn our state dance, The Shag. Fourth graders gave a spectacular Veteran’s Day performance in appreciation of all who have served our country over the years.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Our school hosted many events that encouraged community involvement.

PTO Family Nights, Parent Visitation Day, Veteran’s Day, Project LOVE, Literacy Night, grade level musical performances, and Goodies with Grands were well attended and helped build relationships.

PBIS EVENTS

Through the PBIS program, students were able to shop at the Eddie Store, and be recognized with a Positive Office Referral. Students bought coupons for a picnic with the principal, reading with the coach, legos with the counselor, and much more!

21st Century Learning!

Student Activities Students at Chapin Elementary take initiative, think creatively, and are innovative in all aspects of their learning. This was apparent throughout the school day, but also in various clubs and activities that took place after school. Mr. Martin’s Guitar Club introduced our students to the world of music and culminated in a year-end performance. Students and staff also enjoyed synthesizing healthy lifestyle habits and character building through Run Hard. Twice a week students met after school

to build endurance and strength, as well as social skills. In addition, students participated in dances, movie nights, an Infinity Fun Run, Chapin Readers, Birthday Book Club, Peer Helpers, and a Fall Carnival. Students also helped support our local community food bank by participating in a canned food drive here at school. Students take pride in what they do here at Chapin Elementary School and it is evident by how many of our students go above and beyond what is expected!

SAVING OUR STUDENTS

Chapin Elementary SIC joined forces with the other Chapin cluster SICs and members of the community to bring awareness and action to drug abuse and social/emotional health. Through diligent work, “Supporting our Students, Saving our Students” hosted two forums to discuss prevention, intervention, and recovery.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Chapin Elementary School is home to a wonderful community of learners who participated in the 2019 Special Olympics. The entire student body provided a ‘Clap Out’ to encourage their fellow Eaglets as they embarked on their journey to compete and represent Chapin Elementary.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Dutch Fork Elementary is an award-winning environmental sciences magnet school that embraces inquiry as a stance for teaching and learning. Our school embraces 10 beliefs that guide our actions and work each day.

We believe it is important to teach content (or what to learn) in concert with how to learn.

While developing our students for the 21st century we also believe it is important to have a curriculum of caring. Making learners tall and small in our building feel safe, valued, and loved is a priority that we earnestly strive to live into. We want all within our school to view and consider the perspectives of others in efforts to make community and the world a better place for all.

We rise by lifting others at Dutch Fork Elementary.

A Focus on Achievement The work of our school staff and student body made a difference in our local community every day.

Our work has been recognized on both the state and national level for efforts and environmental education and sustainability practices. We have created conditions for learning in our school to reflect learning in the real world. While we are grateful and honored to have earned three prestigious awards, our most notable achievement is the growth we have made with student voice.

We implemented student-led conferences in grades kindergarten through fifth. This process is a testament to our teachers honoring, valuing, and making space for student voices to be heard.

Fox Cubs shared student-led conferences with their families showing their growth as a student and informing their family members of their goals and how learning can be supported at home.

Dutch Fork Elementary is a place where students take ownership and agency with their learning.

Student Activities All students participated in Environmental Sciences activities such as Green Apple Day of Service and Earth Week. Our Fox Cubs participated in field studies to better understand rocks and minerals, composting and recycling, ichthyology and more.

Student voice was also evident in the social action projects that learners were engaged in this year to include helping endangered species, collecting funds for Ryan’s Well (clean water initiative), a shoe drive to support those with need and reducing the number of shoes that negatively impact plant and wildlife and TREX recycling.

For the second year in a row, Dutch Fork Elementary hosted the Inquiry Matters conference where over 300 educators learned about inquiry-based teaching and learning. Our school also served as one of the touring sites for the MSA Magnet Conference in the Fall.

SC OUTSTANDING ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOOL

Dutch Fork Elementary was awarded the SC Outstanding Environmental Performing School by Keep America Beautiful for the work in environmental practices including composting, recycling, and the creation of beautiful spaces.

Academic Excellence At H. E. Corley Elementary School, we create and foster a learning environment in which learning focuses on rigorous academic improvement, data driven instruction, and life-long leadership skills.

Our school-wide leadership magnet teaches goal setting & tracking, student led conferences, and leadership events which highlight students and staff’s personal, academic, and professional learning goals. H. E. Corley proudly began the first Montessori magnet in School District Five this school year. Our Montessori classrooms are a place of inquiry and student-led discovery. H. E. Corley continues to proudly sponsor a five week summer enrichment Math & Reading program along with our bookmobile program. Dedicated faculty focused on setting individual goals for implementation and worked collaboratively to enhance instructional practices during Data Teams, professional development, and grade-level planning.

Student Activities

Students are encouraged to apply for jobs to help throughout the school environment such as Safety Patrol, Breakfast Transportation leader, and Lunch Buddies to name a few. After school clubs are offered twice a year for six weeks. These clubs allow students to expand their interest in several areas, from mindfulness to yoga, basketball to cheerleading, kindness club to yearbook, technology to healthy cooking club. H. E. Corley Montessori classrooms encourage learning through inquiry and discovery.

Important Goals promote academic achievement and celebration of hard work and pursuit of goal setting. Every year begins with our annual Corley Cookout at Crocodile Countdown. Math Night at Publix, Literacy Luau, and our partnership with the Richland County Public library all support our motto of “Teaching and Learning.” Events like Goodies with Grands, Veteran’s Day breakfast, bi-monthly Muffins with Moms and Donuts with Dads welcome families and community members in to see all the great things happening at HEC!

Ms. Jaime Gill was awarded the Bright Ideas Grant from Mid Carolina Electric and Gas for submitting an innovative idea for her classroom. For creativity in the classroom, Ms. Gill received $970 to enhance student learning.

The district Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports initiative graded H. E. Corley at 100% for implementation. H. E. Corley fully supports the positive recognition for students with activities such as Picnic with Principals, Rock-n-Recess, and CROC Carnival, as well as, supporting students with interventions resources.

KINDNESS CLUB

Members of the Kindness Club packaged hats for the American Heart Association’s “Little Hats, Big Hearts” campaign.

This campaign collects homemade hats, packages them and delivers them to hospitals where they are given to newborns. The hats raise awareness about congenital heart defects. Students packaged more than 100 hats.

CONFERENCE PRESENTERS Staff presented at the Magnet Schools of America Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. The presentation was focused on the celebrations and obstacles of implementing Montessori in a public school.

MCEC BRIGHT IDEAS GRANT

Beth Reilly and Brenna Lamprey, teachers and co-founders of Project Au-Some, received a Bright Ideas Grant from MCEC that was used to purchase an adaptive swing for the preschool playground (October 2018) and a $1000 Innovation Project Funding Grant from SC Special Olympics.

During the year, with the support of parents, teachers, and staff, we pushed the instructional envelope to provide students with an environment to learn and grow. As a result, our school was recognized for achieving High Achievement and High Growth on the ELA and Math portions of the Measurements of Academic Progress (MAP) exam.

Each year, Harbison West offers many activities and clubs for students. Our clubs include: Beta Club, Student Council, Continental Math, Heroes on the Run, School Store, Knitting Club, Dance Team, Extra Inning, Girls in Pearls, Safety Patrol, Good News Club, Cheerleading and Basketball. Additionally, our parents and teachers teamed up to establish the Reading Heroes Project. This project had a goal of providing every student with books to take home for the summer. LEADERSHIP Project Au-Some is a group that builds empathy and social skills between fifth graders and preschool children with special needs. Our school was named a Special Olympics National Unified Champion School and Mr. Davis was named Principal of the Year by the SC Council for Exceptional Children.

Academic Excellence At Irmo Elementary, we believe that students are the primary source of all decisions. Research-based strategic learning contributes to excellence in academic achievement. This growth is enhanced when students are actively engaged in rigorous, relevant, and social learning to develop the whole child. We believe this begins in preschool. Irmo Elementary houses the unique 4K Excel Program in School District 5. EXCEL (Exposing Children to Early Learning) is a tuition-based pre-kindergarten program for students living inside the school district boundaries. Four-year-olds participate in developmentally appropriate, structured learning activities which include Mathematics, Reading, Social Studies and Science. Art, Foreign Language, PE and other special area courses also are included in the program. As our students develop and grow, Irmo Elementary offers an enrichment program for gifted learners (AGP) in 3rd-5th grade. The auditorium was named in honor of Francis W. Allen during a special dedication ceremony with over a hundred in attendance. Allen was a pioneer for Irmo schools serving as principal at Irmo Elementary, Middle and High Schools from the late 1950’s through the 1970’s.

IES LITTLE LIBRARY

The Hewitt Foundation installed their 7th Little Free Library at Irmo Elementary. The library operates on a “give a book, take a book” concept.

Fourth grade students journey to the past to meet their heroes.

This includes clubs such as I AM Gold Leadership Program. The goal of this program is to teach and build habits that will help the students learn more about themselves and become more independent and confident in their developing years. Students have opportunities to engage in activities to learn about leadership qualities, participate in service projects, and hear from special guest speakers.

Each month the program will focus on qualities that will help the students become Responsible, Respectful, Compassionate, Innovative, Committed and Courageous leaders.

HONOR ROLL FINALIST

Irmo Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year, Erin Roberts, was named as one of the District Five Honor Roll Finalists (top three in the district). She is a leader in her profession and always puts children as the first priority through best practice every day in the heart of the hive.

Students can showcase their talents through participation in the District Honor Choir, SAIL Cheer Squad, and academic contests for the arts, science, math, language, and writing.

Collectively MCEC Bright Ideas, Donors Choose, and the District 5 Foundation awarded a total of 16 grants to teachers during this school year. These grants helped teachers put books in the hands of students, increased technology in our kindergarten and first grade classrooms, and made it possible for LMES to celebrate our RTI reading program with families.

SC FIT ME

Our school was one of ten schools in South Carolina who piloted SC Fit Me, a physical education fundraising initiative. Our school raised a total of $7,500, helping us to update our school’s playground.

STATEWIDE RECOGNITION

Lake Murray Elementary was recognized as being #4 in South Carolina and #16 in the region for our Jump Rope 4 Heart fundraising efforts. Coach Nellems and Coach Plemmons did an amazing job spearheading this event for our school.

SENSORY PATHWAY

Noah Fultz, a Spring Hill High School student, designed a sensory pathway for all students to enjoy during recess.

The project not only helped Noah work towards his Eagle Scout badge but also gave our school a way to support student interest in sensory activities.

Leaphart Elementary School STEAM Magnet successfully completed its second year as a STEAM Magnet school. Through the continued development of our magnet program, we challenged our learners to #Think3D ... discover, design, and develop.

At Leaphart, we embraced a #StoryStart2STEAM by providing real-world experiences to integrate literacy across the curriculum. Students and teachers utilized the Math Lab and STEAM Makerspace to create projects that empowered students to be creative and persevere as they encountered real-world challenges.

As a magnet school, we strive to make learning visible. Through the lens of creativity and innovation, we provide our students many opportunities to design, tinker, create, and ideate.

Together, we have created a learner centered environment where students can demonstrate mastery learning through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math).

Caroline Moore placed second in the Nation in the elementary category of the Magnet Schools of America Poster Contest.

Academic Excellence Leaphart Elementary has a superior cadre of teachers who are dedicated to student success.

Using the lens of STEAM to exceed state standards, students are given opportunities to solve authentic problems and express creativity. Our literacy instruction and RtI model provides high quality instruction matched to student’s needs. The balanced literacy model we implement strives to improve classroom instruction through differentiation and the use of high yield strategies, to focus on success of all students. Leaphart Elementary celebrated many academic achievements for the 2018-2019 school year. Aurelia Tyler received a perfect score on the 2018 SC PASS Science State Test.

Caroline Moore received second place in the 2019 Magnet Schools of America Poster Contest in the elementary school category.

We also had several students (Christian Davis, Dustin Grandy, Isaac Houle, Evangeline Lewis, Makaelyn Thomas, Divine Thomas, Jayla Weaver, Emmalyn Weinbach) recognized during the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP).

Leaphart takes pride in hosting many events to engage our families and community in hands on learning. Leaphart engineers continue to employ the 5-step STEAM Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve) across each content area to enhance rigorous learning experiences that extend problem solving, creative thinking, and collaboration. Leaphart is committed to building this foundation so students are given multiple opportunities to develop the skills of creativity, innovation, problem solving, collaboration, and meta-cognition. In February, we held our 2nd Annual Ladies LOVE Math event.

During this signature event, we hosted over 60 women from the community who helped facilitate math learning games with our students.

In April, we held our Green STEAM Earth Day Celebration. This was a school wide event engaging every student in earth friendly STEAM related activities. Activities ranged from: making fresh salsa with students from the Center for Advanced Technical Studies, cleaning out the garden area, building plant stands from old pallets, creating a sound wall out of recycled materials, a school-wide art project, and many more hands-on experiences.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL If smiles on students’ and families’ faces is a measure of success, we definitely are winners this year. Our students have thoroughly enjoyed learning through the lens of the Arts.

This was the year that Nursery Road added new meaning to the word creativity. Students were exposed to drum circles, Tap Troupe, throwing clay on a pottery wheel and creating artwork through technology applications. Parents and students exclaimed “this was the best year ever!”

Nursery Road Elementary School - Arts Magnet completed its first full year of implementation as an Arts Magnet School with professional development focused on arts integration, best practices, and cooperative learning.

Students engaged in field experiences and participated in Artist -in- Residence lessons. Our new “nr” logo was introduced and our digital marquee greets those passing. We also enjoy the benefits of being an ABC and DAP site for School District Five.

Nursery Road students and staff experienced learning at a new level, as we embarked upon our Arts integration journey. In classrooms throughout the school, our classroom teachers and our magnet teachers collaborated to integrate content standards and art standards to create meaningful learning experiences for all students.

Six 5th grade students participated in the School District Five Musical. Nursery Road Dance/Theatre Teacher, Ms. Demato rehearsed with students at the Center for the Arts at Irmo High School.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE

Samia Jackson and J.R. Kinard achieved Perfect Attendance from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. They each attended every single day of the 1,080 days of school!

Diversity and cooperative learning was embedded in our daily practices. Our students once again stood center stage adorned in full costume bringing our Social Studies Standards to life in Third Grade students compose original music in our recently-added Media Arts Studio using GarageBand.

Student Activities Nursery Road Champions received many accolades, including Tri-DAC acceptance, District Science Fair Honorable Mention, School District Five Milk Carton Design Contest winner, Irmo International Arts Festival Poster Contest winner and Sertoma Club Essay winners. Students took delight in African drumming, student illustrations and the Black History Hall of Fame led by our Artist in Residence. The afternoon concluded with a concert by the Reggie Sullivan Band that moved all of our students.

Cassidy Huey, a 5th grade student, was nominated and accepted in Tri-District Arts Consortium Visual Arts Summer Program. Her artwork was featured in the Tri-DAC Showcase at the end of the program.

IRMO ARTS FESTIVAL

Students showcased their skills, playing the ukulele and leading an African drumming circle at the kick-off of the first Irmo International Festival. Fourth grader Nati Domingo submitted one of the winning posters for the festival.

WATCH D.O.G.S.

Our Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) Program had 37 fathers, grandfathers, and other father figures volunteer at least one day this past school year. Their time included loading cars before and after school, being an extra set of eyes in the cafeteria and during recess, and assisting teachers and students in the classroom as needed.

Academic Excellence Seven Oaks Elementary MEDIA Magnet strives to provide students with opportunities to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills through the use of media tools. The school’s MEDIA magnet program fosters a range of content and digital literacy among students through Mass communication, Engagement, Digital media, Interactive learning, and Academics (MEDIA).

A variety of technology devices are used to enhance the curriculum and give students handson experiences to communicate their learning.

Through the state-of-the-art audio/visual production studio, students present their learning to authentic audiences to build communication skills. Collaboration and Teamwork are a major component of the Seven Oaks MEDIA focus.

Students interact with each other through Break-Out activities, Coding experiences with the Dot and Dash Robots, and a multitude of media

The Fourth Annual Golden Oaks Film Festival was held at the Center for the Arts at Irmo High School. Students and families walked “the red carpet” as they entered the theater to eagerly await the naming of the winners of the studentmade academically-focused videos.

DISTRICT HONOR CHOIR

Student Activities Students at Seven Oaks demonstrate their MEDIA skills by producing our daily school news show and a variety of video productions throughout the year.

The state-of-the-art news studio is run by students each day with script writing, on-air presentations, and behind the scenes crew work. All grade levels are involved in some way from leading the pledge to creating and presenting news videos. Being a part of the “News Show” is a highlight for all our students.

Seven students were chosen to participate in the District Honor Choir.

Students also share their learning through Podcasts using our podcast station and by producing short movies via the Mac Lab and iPads.

Students give a “hoot” about helping their school and demonstrating their leadership talents by being a part of the Student Directors and Spotlight Recyclers. These groups assist with recycling efforts and plan events such as Red Ribbon Week. This year, seven students were selected to participate in the District Honor Choir.

FAMILY FUN NIGHT

Family Fun Night welcomed more than 150 families to interact with the digital resources that are available to the students and have fun together in their child’s school.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Faculty, staff, and students and their families participated in community service projects such as collecting food items for local food banks and our D5 Snackpack program. Students also came together to positively impact the following organizations throughout the year: United Way, American Heart Association, March of Dimes, and American Cancer Society through Relay for Life.

At Chapin Intermediate, our faculty and staff are committed to growing our students academically, socially and emotionally. Our staff and faculty understands and provides for the unique needs of fifth and sixth-grade students.

Chapin Intermediate School launched into year four with inspiration, energy, new initiatives.

Emphasis on on Social-Emotional Health, a Chapin SIC cluster focus, meant the schedule had ASEAcademic, Social, Emotional time built into each day. Along with a new A/B academic rotation with

The theme “If I Never Forever Endeavor” encouraged our students to take risks, honor individual strengths and to recognize and respect personal differences. Academic Excellence The Profile of the S.C. Graduate could seem daunting for today’s learner. However, for a student at our school, all work done in our classrooms melds their efforts into a larger outcome - a love of learning!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL I am thrilled to be at CrossRoads Intermediate School. It is truly a unique school that specializes on the 6th grade student. When students enter CrossRoads, they come as elementary students, but in the end leave as secondary learners.

A Focus on Achievement

CrossRoads Intermediate is a sixth grade only school, where our mission is to educate sixth graders at the crossroads of childhood and adolescence in a nurturing environment characterized by high academic standards and rigorous curriculum, while providing the necessary tools for lifelong learning in an ever-changing and diverse society.

A key strategy we use for our students is the use of smaller learning communities that contain four core teachers. This approach provides students with support as they navigate the changes that will become commonplace in middle and high school, such as changing classrooms, using lockers, and increased independence and responsibility.

Teachers constantly look for ways to make lessons meaningful and engaging by looking outside of the box. Many of our social studies classes experienced virtual reality, taking trips across the world to explore history. In science, break out

boxes were used to foster teamwork and problem solving skills. Some of our classes were able to work with Dutch Fork High students in real time on a lesson thanks to modern technology. Students are able to take their math skills to the next level by joining our Math Olympiad team. These are just some examples of how our students are able to grow as learners.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Our motto is We aRe Chapin: Respectable, Responsible, Remarkable, and how truly remarkable our achievements have been. We celebrated local, state, and national award winners, and I was honored by SCASA as SC Middle School Principal of the Year.

We scored 100% on our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports evaluation, raised over $5,500 for charity, volunteered 1100+ hours, and celebrated our students attending Special Olympics with our annual school-wide, confetti parade send-off.

Academic Excellence STEAM Activities Lead the Way to College and Career Readiness STEAM focus is central to all instruction at Dutch Fork Middle. It’s about looking at the connections in our learning. As part of the curriculum, teachers develop lessons requiring students to make connections between their areas of study with real-world experiences, current events and future careers of interest. Campus-wide, we engage, plan, act and reflect to solve complex problems or think through a process.

In both of these experiences, students attended interest-based seminars with national, state, and local business leaders and gained a deeper understanding of the relationship between STEAM and career.

ENGINEERING

Six students attended the University of South Carolina Engineering Challenge, placing third overall and receiving awards for “Best Engineering Notebook” and “Innovation.”

PERFORMING ARTS

Seventh and eighth grade bands, Capriccio Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, and Honors Orchestra received Superior Ratings at the Carowinds Music Festival.

Students have the opportunity to engage in several school-wide college and career readiness opportunities, including a STEAM-related Career Day, as well as a Student Professional Development Day.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Irmo Middle School International Academic Magnet continues the tradition of instructional excellence and a positive school environment year after year. Being a Professional Development School with the University of South Carolina (UofSC) as well as developing our working relationship with UofSC’s International School of Business has afforded rich educational opportunities for the teachers and students.

The IMS Science Team finished in first place in the Regional SC Science Olympiad middle school competition out 15 teams.

A Focus on Achievement

Change is inevitable; growth is a choice. Irmo Middle’s cohesive leadership team implemented student-focused changes this year to intentionally connect our school community with each other and with the world. Through full implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and increased integration of our international theme, our school has experienced an intentional culture shift toward awareness of our differences, acceptance of others, and mindfulness of self. Our

designation as a Professional Development School (PDS), in partnership with the University of South Carolina, has taken our teachers to the next level of excellence in instruction. Small group instruction has been the focal point of this partnership through our professional growth opportunities for teachers and on-site coaching by our PDS liaison.

As a result of this emphasis, we have seen growth in our students and teachers and look forward to continuing this professional relationship.

The Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports program has enhanced this year by creating a more productive learning environment.

Our International Academic Magnet (I AM) fosters a transnational mindset by building students’ understanding of global issues and their impact on the world we live in.

The students at Irmo Middle School work hard everyday to achieve academic excellence. Our students consistently score higher on standardized assessments than the state average. This year, our Science Olympiad team placed 1st in the Regional Science Olympiad and 4th in the State Science Olympiad. Hands-on instruction in all courses increases student engagement and success, especially in our Pitsco STEM lab and technology classes such as Multimedia and Gateway, and in

Our school, along with all the Irmo area schools, hosted the IrmoStrong 5k Fun Run with over 300 people participating. We also partnered with Chick-Fil-A in Columbiana Mall to provide students with opportunities to practice interviewing skills.

Students who interviewed, received feedback and three students were selected for employment at Chick-Fil-A once they turn fourteen. Each of these experiences, provided students with opportunities to learn and grow outside of the classroom.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Chapin High is a community school with a tradition of academic, athletic and performing arts excellence that began in 1924. As the oldest high school in School District Five, we are incredibly proud of the accomplishments of our Eagle family members.

Students received over 73 million dollars in academic scholarships, our athletes captured two team state titles and one individual, and our band and choral departments rate among the highest in the state.

The tradition of excellence continued at Chapin High School with numerous awards and accolades as we began our journey into the 5A SC High School League classification. Varsity Cheer and Girls Lacrosse both won state championships, with one of our wrestlers winning an individual state title. The NJROTC was a recipient of the Distinguished Unit Award for the 19th time. Our

academic programs generated 73 million dollars in scholarship money, 43 Palmetto Fellows Scholars and 4 National Merit Scholarship recipients. We are always ready to learn, be respectful to others and responsible to ourselves.

Chapin Varsity Cheer celebrates the 5A state championship with students and community.

Academic Excellence Chapin High School continues to excel academically as students reach new levels of achievement. The graduating class of 2019 were offered over $73 million in scholarships with 84% of these being Hope and Life Scholarships from the state lottery funds. The 2019 class had four National Merit finalists and 43 Palmetto Fellows.

Chapin has a strong Advanced Placement program demonstrated by having 133 AP Scholars.

One Chapin High School student was named a Clemson National Scholar, a distinction received by only 12 incoming freshmen. The faculty and staff at Chapin High School are committed to providing a learning environment that challenges students to exceed the expectations of the Profile of the SC Graduate, demonstrated by Chapin’s Excellent rating on the SC School Report Card and a graduation rate of 92.8%.

Academic Excellence This year, Dutch Fork High School continued to excel academically. Dutch Fork High School students earned exceptional honors and recognitions for achievements. The Marching Band had one of its best years. They placed second in the Lower State competition and finished in the top five in the 4A State Championship.

PROJECT BOOM

Students completed an award-winning, innovative program between local school districts and Midlands Technical College that partners students with local construction companies in order to give them hands-on experience and a pathway to employment after high school.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT

Students continue to lead the way when it comes to taking rigorous courses. This year 24 AP courses were offered, and 622 students stepped up to the challenge. At the end of the year more than 1,370 AP exams were taken by students at Dutch Fork High.

Academic Excellence Irmo High School offers rigorous and innovative courses to students in School District Five. At Irmo, students have the opportunity to participate in academically challenging curricula through our International Baccalaureate Programmes, Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, and Arts classes.

Our Center for the Arts is central to our diverse creative offerings which include vocal and instrumental music, dance, visual, and performing arts. This school year, Irmo High School completed the authorization process to offer the IB Careerrelated Programme in collaboration with The Center for Advanced Technical Studies in the fields of Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Culinary Arts, Media Technology, and Veterinary Sciences. Irmo High has also partnered with Nephron Pharmaceuticals to enhance our Health

ATHLETICS

Irmo High School girls cross country team was named regional champions. The school had several region participants in softball, boys basketball, girls basketball, and Jordan Reeder earned third place in the SCHSL state wrestling tournament.

THE ARTS

Irmo High School hosted the 2019 TEDxYouthCola conference. The school also earned several other arts-related awards: Outstanding Performance Award by the SC Band Directors Association; Brice Kim earned second place in the national Magnet Schools of America poster contest; choral program earned an overall rating of Superior at the SC Choral Performance Assessment.

Academic Excellence Our vibrant learning community is made up of individuals from all areas of School District Five coming to Spring Hill with various backgrounds, interests, beliefs and experiences. While challenging and motivating each other, students share knowledge, celebrate successes, and work together to achieve academic excellence. Since opening in 2013, we have staked our place among high schools in establishing that excellence. Our SAT, ACT, AP pass rates and EOC scores exceed state and national averages.

Spring Hill administered 746 Advanced Placement exams to a student body of 1045. Of the 208 students in our fourth graduating class: 95% have completed a least one school of study. As the smallest senior class in the district, the class of 2019 earned $40 million in scholarships. At Spring Hill, we continue to challenge each other to achieve our highest potential and the goal of academic excellence.

Student Activities

Here at Spring Hill High School, our students are not just encouraged to discover their passion through academics but also through extracurricular activities. We are dedicated to providing student opportunities to be involved in building the school culture and establishing traditions. Students are able to serve in many leadership capacities such as student council, magnet academy boards, grade level executive boards and club officers.

Teachers facilitate project-based activities which encourage students to seek fresh approaches, collaborate, utilize resources, and ask questions to overcome obstacles.

There are 41 different clubs and activities for our students to participate in, and student-led movements lead to creation of more each year. We offer traditional clubs like National Honor Society, Student Council, and Mock Trial, but we also offer those truly unique to our school like our popular Multimedia Gaming Society, Fencing Club, and Cheese Club. All students have the opportunity to get involved in as many areas as they wish; the vast majority of them do.

Academic Excellence Students from each high school were recognized for success in their program of study at The Center, in both academic, performance, and skill-based competitions. Students from The Center placed first in the state in each Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) competition and were selected to represented School District Five and South Carolina in national CTSO competitions.

Students from Center programs also earned top awards at the Intel Regional Science and Engineering Fair and the SC Junior Academy of Science and have been invited to attend the 2020 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Many students earned industry recognized credentials, making them immediately employable in industries including automotive technology, building construction, welding, networking, and computer repair. Students earned scholarships to post-secondary schools based on their performance or portfolio in their program of study, including agricultural science, digital arts, culinary arts, and media technology.

All students have the opportunity to participate in a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO). Students may participate in FFA, HOSA, Skills, Prostart, TSA, VEX, SCJAS, or InvenTeam.

Academy for Success transformed into the Superhero Hall of Fame for this school year, as the Wolf Pack had another banner year of achievement inside and outside of the classroom.

College and career readiness. community outreach, and team building were the focus for the year, in addition to a continued focus on excellence in the classroom.

From Lunch and Learn sessions with the Columbia Fire and Rescue Department and Health Care Professionals, to tours of universities and technical schools in three regions of South Carolina, to our BBTS Summer Camp for our middle school students, our school’s commitment to providing a world class experience to our Superheroes in Training was in full effect.

Teachers and staff build caring and trusting relationships with students in an effort to inspire, motivate and empower each student to reach their highest potential. It is our promise to continue to actively engage parents and strengthen community partnerships to support the needs of our students.

Academy for Superheroes.

Academic Excellence Academy for Success teachers invited authors into their classrooms, created partnerships with community non-profits and business partners, and worked to provide opportunities for hands on learning experiences with the Center for Advanced Technical Studies with many of our PBIS activities.

Students composed original poems and shared their work throughout the district. Forty four high school students participated in one or more tours to state colleges and technical schools, including Clemson University, SC State University, The Citadel, Tri County and Trident Technical Colleges. Twelve seniors graduated from their respective high schools, with three of those students qualifying for SC Life Scholarships. The Academy for Success provides a nurturing environment for students

who are challenged with rigorous instruction that is tailored to the learning styles of our superheroes in training--our students.

TEA PARTY AND PBIS

Almost 30 students and visitors enjoyed a full tea made by our CAT Culinary Arts superstar Coleman D. in an event sponsored by two of our teachers.

Students learned etiquette and business interpersonal skills during the event.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS Hunter Allison tours The Citadel as part of the AFS Career and College Exploration Program, sponsored by the EEDA Successful Transitions Grant.

Student Activities Faculty and students of the Academy for Success embraced their inner superheroes as the school adopted a superhero theme. From conducting Superhero in Training class meetings to induct all new students and staff to conducting superhero feats in the classroom and in the community, 2018 - 2019 was a banner year for all members of the Wolf Pack. Twelve seniors graduated from their respective high schools because of the support they received from the Herculean efforts put forth by our talented pool of teachers and

#PRIDEIN5 ALUMNI paraprofessionals. Thirty two families completed family group sessions through our Building Bridges to Success program, resulting in students and their families building strong family ties. Students participated in Saturday service projects during which they assembled over 300 personal hygiene care packages, complete with personalized inspirational notes for each bag, and donated them to assist Oliver Gospel Mission’s community outreach and shelter programs.

District Five Alumni were featured volunteer presenters during our High School Career and College Exploration tours. Ian Dickerson and Dominique Geiger mentored students as they shared their personal journeys, educational and career paths during students’ tours of Clemson University.

SUMMER ENRICHMENT

Eleven middle school students are participating in our Building Bridges to Success Summer Enrichment and Career Exploration Camp. Through a partnership with River’s Edge Retreat and our EEDA grant, students are engaging in STEM activities, language arts and writing, team building, physical and mental well being activities, and more.

FOCUS ON THE FINISH LINE Faculty and staff worked closely with parents to keep seniors focused on meeting graduation goals. District Five Retiree Gloria Lee volunteered over 100 hours to help our seniors to successfully pass their math courses and our Senior Celebration highlighted our seniors and their families.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR At the heart of education is the desire to inspire students to dream.

For without dreams, we lack the necessary fuel that drives us to the next destination in our lives.

Empowering students to arrive at the next destination is both a tremendous responsibility and a humbling privilege.

A Focus on Achievement

The Lexington-Richland School District Five Adult and Community Education Program extends the opportunity for adult learners in our community to further both academic and career goals. Our program assists students in earning a high school credential, both high school diploma and high school equivalency credentials such as GED or TASC. Students also can earn a Career Readiness

Adult Education Open House.

Credential that is widely accepted in business and industry as an indicator of an individual’s readiness for employment or for career advancement. In addition, all Adult Education students have access to a College and Career Navigator who works with them to set goals, connect with community resources, and engage in college and career exploration.

Our students allow us to accompany them on a journey wrought with determination and self-discovery as they seek to better their lives and the lives of those they love. At the end of the day, we accept the responsibility, and treasure the opportunity to inspire our students to dream and then empower them to achieve.

Academic Excellence The Lexington-Richland Five Adult and Community Education program served over 280 students during the 2018-2019 school year, which includes students enrolled in High School Credential, English as a Second Language, Literacy, and Skills Enrichment programs.

Through our Generational Family Services grant, Adult Education students had the opportunity to complete coursework in the Early Care Education Career Pathway. Through our Parenting Class, student acquired the foundational skills/knowledge needed to continue to care for their children and/ or become a child care professional. Students earned CPR and First Aid Certification through the American Heart Association, and received the Transportation Safety Training from School District Five Transportation and Safety personnel. In addition, students study content such as: SIDS and Safe Sleep Practices; Administration of Medication;

Building and Physical Premises Safety; Emergency Preparedness & Response Planning; and Nutrition and Physical Activity. Our students then apply the content they learn in class by volunteering at various elementary schools, district wide.

ESL AWARD

“Highest Overall Aggregate Average” award which means the ESL program was one of the top five programs in the state with the highest aggregate average for English as a Second Language.

CREDENTIALS

Each year, School District Five helps adult education students earn high school credentials, paraprofessional certifications, career readiness certifications and licenses.

The Adult Education Program is recognized by the SC Department of Education.

Student Activities Our English as a Second Language (ESL) program sponsors Conversation Club every 4th Thursday of the month. The teachers invite community members to come in and engage ESL students in casual conversation so that the students can practice what they have been learning in class.

Students and volunteers engage in icebreakers, and then engage in conversations where they practice discussing topics such as weather, family, and holidays.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES Academic excellence is the focus of School District Five of Lexington & Richland Counties, and its the district’s top programs and services that help keep a laser focus on instruction and make School District Five a leading educational system in the state and nation. From social workers who work one-on-one with students in need to School Resource Officers who help our schools stay safe, School District Five educators say they see the impact that strong programs and services have on our schools.

“Under the leadership of our school board, School District Five has very deliberately worked to bolster its programs and services as a part of creating great schools and a quality education for families,” said Superintendent Dr. Christina Melton.

One District program that has continued to receive state and national attention each school year is the District’s food education initiatives by the District’s student nutrition group. School District Five has been awarded a Farm to School grant by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide educational opportunities for students and teachers and serve more local foods into cafeterias.
