Blue Hair & Tattoos? I’m Taking Off My ‘Mom Costume’

M

y senior year of college was when I finally felt comfortable with my “look.” I had black hair with hot pink tips, tattoos scattered about my skin, and jeans that came by their many rips honestly. Then, I became a mom and I felt the pressure to look more “mom-like.” I didn’t know any moms with tattoos and unicorn hair. That is how my “Mom Costume” came to be. I kept my hair a natural color. I stopped getting tattoos. I bought a pair of mom jeans. My clothes shopping mantra was “More Donna Reed, less Joan Jett.” It wasn’t until my third child was born that I had an epiphany – I AM a mom, no matter what I look like. It seems silly it

took me so long to realize that, but society puts a lot of pressure on moms (and women in general) when it comes to appearance. I worried that my old look would make people assume I was a bad mom. But I know I am a good mom and it’s got nothing to do with how I dress or style my hair. I let go of that ridiculous notion of what a “good mom” looks like and decided to reclaim my style. I’ve had electric blue hair for over a year now, new tattoos (homages to Wonder Woman and Harry Potter), and while I still rock the mom jeans, I do it because they are super comfortable and not because I think I have to. Punk rock women can be good moms. Conservatively-dressed women can be bad moms. We all have the capacity to be good or bad parents, but that is all based on our choices, not our appearance. Y

Changing From Adversaries to Allies ave you ever felt like you were at war with your toddler or teen? Everything feels like a battle because of these constant skirmishes.

Between clashes, you may find yourself nursing resentment, grumbling about your beloved child as if he were your enemy. When your child feels like your adversary, it is easy to discount her needs or feelings because your agenda is the most important thing at that moment: getting in the car, putting shoes on, cleaning up blocks … The next time you feel your back rising, notice where you are headed, and choose a different perspective. You can’t wait for your child to “get a new attitude” until you do. Your perspective and approach matter tremendously if you want to become allies and work together, rather than standing at odds. How? Keep these points in mind: t Your child is NOT your enemy. You have conflicting priorities at the moment. t Your child is doing the best he can for his level of brain development. t Children who feel connected (loved, respected, valued, important) are generally much more cooperative, because their needs are being met. t How you interact with your child every day matters. Do you bring more support or more criticism? t Anger keeps us from accessing our thinking brain, and bringing our best selves to the situation. t Define the problem and state it, asking for your child’s help to figure it out. t Working together to solve the problem puts you on the same side. So, instead of seeing your child as an 8 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

enemy, see her as an ally to work with to come to an agreement or to solve a problem together. Some examples: “Enemy” Perspective: “You need to put your shoes on right away.” Problem: Shoes need to be on so your feet are safe. “Ally Perspective: “We need to leave. Do you want to put your shoes on here or in the car?” Another example: “Enemy” Perspective: “How many times have I told you to feed the dog?” Problem: The dog needs to be fed. “Ally” Perspective: “It’s your job to feed Bingo. Let’s see if we can think of a way that you can remember without being reminded.” If this seems like too much, and you feel yourself digging your heels in deeper, take a deep breath. When you can become your own ally, you will feel better. And when you feel better, you do better. Consider this quote from the late author, Wayne Dyer: “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” Dr. Lesley Iwinski is the mother of three grown children, a family physician and owner of Growing Peaceful Families, LLC. She offers classes, workshops and seminars. Info: (859) 333-3053 or www.growingpeacefulfamilies.com. Y

he Lexington Children’s Theatre presents “la ofrenda,” a play dealing with the Día de los Muertos Mexican holiday. History is something Alex doesn’t get. Not even his abuela, a strongwilled Chicana named Marta Torres, can help him understand the beauty and magic of Día de los Muertos. But with a little thunder and a lot of magic, a fast-talking skeleton might give Alex the courage and compassion he needs to connect. Showtimes are Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 adults, $15 children. The Saturday, Sept. 28 show is Pay-What-You-Can. The show is recommended for ages 9 & up. Info: LCT Main Stage, 418 W. Short St. Info: 254-4546.

Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning

Book Clubs for Kids: Building Brain Power t the Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning, book clubs are not just for adults. For the past decade, the Center has offered book clubs for pre-kindergartners. This meets a vital community educational need because Lexington, like most everywhere else in America, has no publicly supported preschool education. In Fayette County schools, for example, only 51.3% of incoming students last fall met kindergarten readiness benchmarks. Reading to a child is the most beneficial way to feed that child’s brain. “The most important thing we can do for our children is read to them and that starts the day they are born” said Jessica Mohler, the Center’s Head of Communications and Marketing. “Reading to your children directly impacts their brain development. It’s part of cultivating a child’s language skills and is essential for school readiness and their commitment to lifelong learning.”

10 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

The Center this year has added a new club, for girls 6-8 years old called Girl Power: A Book Club for Girls Who Will Change the World. “The books will build self-esteem and increase social and emotional confidence,” Mohler said. “We want to empower young girls.” All book clubs are free and are for a child with a grown-up. The instructors are trained professionals. The clubs are sponsored by the PNC Foundation. Here is the fall schedule. Click Clack Moo: Birth to 2 years old. Melissa Johnson-Farris. Tuesdays. When to Take a Child to the ER

E

mergencies happen to people. Children are no exception. According to The American Academy of Pediatrics: “An emergency is when you believe a severe injury or illness is threatening your child’s health or may cause permanent harm.” There are some situations that nearly everyone would agree warrant a child being seen in an Emergency Department. Others may not be so clear cut. There are some rules of thumb, though, that can help caregivers in making this important decision. Certain accidents usually warrant an ER visit. These include car crashes, smoke inhalation, choking, near drowning, firearm or other weapon injury, electric shock, more severe bicycle wrecks, and more severe falls. Any head trauma that results in any loss of consciousness, confusion or recurrent vomiting should be evaluated in the ER. The same goes for any rhythmic jerking with loss of consciousness (possible

Cheering Is Eriana’s Strong Point

ost college level, competitive cheerleaders have relied on years of experience to earn collegiate scholarships. That’s what makes Eriana Meadows, an 18-year-old, Henry Clay High graduate, so unusual. Eriana earned a cheerleading scholarship to Gardner-Webb, a Christian, liberal arts school in North Carolina, even though her cheer career started only three years ago. In grade school, Eriana did gymnastics but it wasn’t so much her tumbling and flipping skills that interested Gardner-Webb – it was her power. Eriana, for the most part, keeps her feet on the ground when her team competes. That’s because she helps form the base, a position that requires great strength. Weight-lifting and year-round training help Eriana fulfill that requirement, but, she said, technique is equally important when you’re about to flip someone in the air. “Your hand positions have to be just right when you’re holding somebody’s life in your hands,” she said. “One wrong move and everything comes crashing down.” Fortunately, Eriana helped avoid that eventuality as a star on the Henry Clay team that twice placed in the top 10 at national meets in Orlando. At those events, Eriana strove to be the most focused competitor. “You never see her horsing around,

she’s straight focus,” her mother Erika said. “She’s the girl coming to win. That’s her main goal.” Eriana brings the same commitment to her studies. She had a 3.9 GPA at Henry Clay, took 2 A.P. classes and is a National Honor Society member. Along with the cheerleading scholarship, Gardner-Webb offered her an academic award with the Presidential Merit Scholarship. She packed her busy schedule with extra-curricular activities including the Cultural Heritage Club, where she served as vice president. Along with the history and spirit clubs, and Young Life where she was a worship leader, Eriana was active in the Red Cross Sound the Alarm effort. The group installed smoke detectors and provided safety checks for local residents. She also is active at the Consolidated Baptist Church where her mother works as assistant to the pastor. As a student, Eriana is both fastidious and well organized, her mother said. “She doesn’t wait around on assignments. She gets them done right away and will take time to give them her stamp of approval,” Erika said. “She’s highly organized and keeps a color coded binder.” Is your mom right, Eriana? “Yes, she took the words right out of my mouth.” Y

educator of the month Kathy Theis

hen students walk into Kathy Theis’ guidance office at Clays Mill Elementary, they immediately know this is their space, too. One side of the office is designed for “Chill Sessions” featuring soft lighting, pale blue walls and springy chairs where fidgety kids can “bounce it out.” The other side is where Theis hosts lunch gatherings with students. She has a “Work It Out Wall,” filled with posters on managing conflict; the “Happy Wall” covered with inspirational quotes; and a jar full of conversation starters. Theis, a child guidance specialist, connects with students about their emotional

well-being. It’s something she learned while teaching at Booker T. Washington Elementary, a Title I school. “It’s instilled in me that we’re teaching the whole child,” she said. “Not just academics, but life skills.” After six years in the classroom at Booker T., she earned a master’s degree in counseling and moved to Clays Mill five years ago. Theis visits every class for sessions once a month and has an open-door policy for students. She created a form on the Clays Mill web site where teachers, parents and students can submit a referral to see her. She’s also a strong advocate for home visits.

“It’s instilled in me that we’re teaching the whole child. Not just academics, but life skills.”

“It’s about breaking down those barriers,” Theis said. “After every home visit I would sit in my car and write down three things about that kid that had nothing to do with academics. That’s the only way to make those connections.” An Illinois native, Theis is a Cubs fan who loves to watch her nephew play baseball.

But even on weekends, she is thinking about her students. Monday mornings you can find her asking how a soccer game went or if a student enjoyed the movie they had planned to see. She mails postcards to students over the summer, and fifth graders write a letter to themselves that Theis mails to them over the summer. “I thrive on working with kids,” she said. “I like to finish that story with them.” Principal Grant Davis said Theis’ dedication to her job is evident to all who meet her. “There’s nothing she can’t do,” Davis said. “She is kind and compassionate. She always wants to do what’s best for kids, and the parent community loves her.” NOMINATIONS: Asbury University’s School of Education, which offers undergraduate and graduate degrees for young adults and working professionals in Kentucky and around the world, is pleased to honor world-class educators throughout Kentucky.
