Letter From Katie

MARCH 2019 Vol. 23 Issue 3

Our Child’s ADHD Diagnosis Is a Kind of Gift

M

y daughter’s ADHD diagnosis is the best thing to happen to our family in a long time. Let me explain that – I’m not thrilled that my child has a disorder that makes life more difficult for her. But I am relieved that we now have an answer to the struggles we had been facing. I am happy that we have the resources to help her learn how to best manage her symptoms. That is why I view her diagnosis as a kind of gift. ADHD has a variety of symptoms in children. It’s more than hyperactivity. It’s impulse control, social cues, sensory processing, memory challenges, emotional regulation and more. I wanted to share some of the resources I found that might help other parents. “Learning to Plan and Be Organized: Executive Function Skills for Kids With AD/ HD” – This book is written for the child, not the parent, which makes it a valuable tool in giving children a role in

their behavior plan. The book is written for an audience of ages 8-12 and includes fun illustrations, fill-in charts and “brain break” word games every few chapters. “ADDitude Magazine” – This publication has a wealth of information for children and adults with ADHD. The website, www. additudemag.com, has articles on nutrition, technology, medication reviews, behavior management plans and more. Support Groups – Whether online or inperson, Lexington has support groups for parents of children with ADHD. A quick Facebook search will find local groups for caregivers of children with ADHD. Your Child’s School – The school counselor should be able to walk you through creating a 504 Plan to make accommodations for your child in the classroom. Whatever avenue you choose to manage your child’s diagnosis, support is vital, and there is a community of parents and professionals ready to help. Y

P

lanning the perfect summer for your kids has never been so easy or so fun thanks to the 17th annual Lexington Family Magazine Summer Camp & Activities Fair set for Saturday, April 13 at Lexington Christian Academy. The Fair is the perfect place to find a great summer camp, private school, childcare center, extracurricular activity, enrichment class, healthcare professional and more. Mom and Dad can enjoy one-on-one interaction with representatives from more than 70 organizations while the kids play. While parents gather information, kids can enjoy the inflatable bounce house, face painting, crafts and handson art and science activities. The best part? It’s all FREE. Families can take a break from the activities and watch live children’s performances throughout the day by gymnasts, dancers, martial artists and more. Also during the Fair is the annual Lexington Family Cover Model Contest. Stop by the Cover Model Booth and have a photo of your child taken for free by Kaitlyn Silvestri Ellis Photography. We will choose children from those photos to appear on future covers of Lexington Family Magazine. Our raffle prizes include games, books, DVDs, gift baskets and even an American Girl Doll. The first 100 families in the door are also entered for a special door prize. If your family could use a free day of fun and some help planning a great summer, stop by on Saturday, April 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lexington Christian Academy at 450 W. Reynolds Road. t“I think high school age is appropriate. Even then I think guidelines should be established. We made the mistake of getting our oldest a phone at 10 and that was a terrible idea.” – Nichole Satterwhite t“I wouldn’t recommend getting a child one until 8th grade or freshman year. Such a distraction and early adolescent kids can’t handle the responsibility that comes with it and lack selfcontrol.” – Maria C. Wertzler March’s Feedback Question is: If you could pick one

children’s song to never hear again for the rest of your life, what would it be? Answer our Feedback Question and your comments could be in the magazine!

Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning

Family Fun & Learning Night: Celebrate Health

W

What better way to Celebrate Health than with a fun-filled night away from screens (TV, computer, etc.) with movement, crafts and a healthy (and delicious) meal? And it’s all free. All of that is on the menu for Wednesday, March 20, 5-7 p.m. at the Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning at 251 West Second Street in downtown Lexington. The theme for this Family Fun & Learning Night is Celebrate Health with the law firm of Stoll Keenon Ogden serving as partner.

Activities include: Make crafts with the Living Arts and Sciences Center. Create an art project with Dr. Melissa Carver, who will address mental health and well-being for kids. Jump, run and test your balance with an obstacle course provided by Urban Ninja Project. Learn about healthy snacking by making your own trail mix using quality ingredients. Plus, every family receives a free book. The evening is capped by a healthy meal featuring soup, vegetables and a make-your-own salad. The event is for children 3-12 and their grownups. Mealtime is an opportunity for adults to take a break from dinner prep to connect with peers. Dr. Carver’s art project will allow children to explore mental health issues. “It’s important for children to know that they can open up to family members about their feelings, and that sharing these feelings is important,” said Jessica Mohler, the Center’s Head of Communications and Marketing. “Sadness is a part of life. Kids can think they are the only ones who have sad feelings. We know that community is the best way to overcome hardship, and that’s part of what this Learning Night is about.” Celebrate Health: Wednesday, March 20, 5-7 p.m. To register, visit carnegiecenterlex.org or call (859) 254-4174. The Power of Family Storytelling ou’re re-telling one of your children’s favorite stories about something that happened when you were growing up. It’s one of your children’s favorites, and they have heard it dozens of times. You reach the end of your tale only to hear them say, “Tell it again!”

Reminiscing and telling stories about your own childhood can bring your family history to life, and can also be one of the greater gifts you can give your child. As a bonus, you are unlikely to ever find as appreciative an audience. If the sustaining narrative is one of family members facing challenges and overcoming them, children get the message that they are part of something bigger than themselves. They are also likely to be more resilient. For that reason, stories that describe hardship or sadness are as important as those that are funny and have happy endings. Allowing opportunities for questions and taking time to explore feelings in the tales you tell help children develop emotional intelligence. Researchers who study storytelling also found that children whose parents shared stories about their family histories develop a stronger self-concept and higher selfesteem. Not only that, they have better coping skills, suffer less from anxiety and depression, and feel more connected to others. Here are some tips: t Tell stories in a warm and responsive way t Use your voice and facial expressions to act out some of the parts t Answer questions as they come up t Share the feelings experienced by the characters 10 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

t Include tales of your own children’s younger days t Encourage your children’s stories, even the simple ones such as, “Fell down.” You can also use some questions from the Do You Know? Scale, used by researcher Marshall Duke at Emory University: Do you know… ... where people in our family grew up? (mother, father, grandparents, etc.) ... some of the jobs your parents had when they were younger? ... who you most resemble? … where your last name came from? … injuries or illnesses your parents had when they were young? (For a full list of DYK questions, visit https://bit.ly/2GBTfRX.) One of the beautiful things about building your family’s sense of identity and cohesion through storytelling is how portable it is, and how easy it is to use. You can be snuggled in bed, riding in the car, sitting around the campfire or sharing a meal. What family story will you share with your children today? Dr. Lesley Iwinski is the mother of three grown children, a family physician and owner of Growing Peaceful Families, LLC. She offers classes, workshops and seminars. n the Fayette County Public Schools, families are our partners in all that we do, and we are committed to working collaboratively with you to ensure the success of every student. One of our many outreach efforts is an exciting program we call Family University, or “Fam U” for short. Family University is a series of Saturday learning opportunities we offer several times a year for parents and other caregivers to provide another avenue for empowering families to be more fully engaged in their children’s education. Fam U also helps parents understand more about our schools and school district offerings. The day is structured to provide classes, workshops and other events that familiarize participants not only with our schools, but also with community resources. Each FamU event is unique, but one

thing they all have in common is that there’s something for everyone! t Sessions for Parents and Guardians. Explore opportunities to support students’ learning at home. Past topics have included School Readiness, Early Literacy Practices, Issues and Trends Affecting Youth, New Curriculum Programs in FCPS, Services for English Learners, College and Career Readiness, and more! t Sessions for Youth. Moore's Career Path: A Happy Accident

H

ow did Daphne Moore become a Vision Therapist at Dr. Rick Graebe’s optometry office in Versailles? Mostly by accident. A 2014 graduate with a psychology degree from St. Catharine College, now closed, Moore was searching online for school counselor jobs when another position – Vision Therapist – caught her eye, so to speak. After a lengthy interview with Jennifer Lord, a Vision Therapist at Dr. Graebe’s office, Moore was intrigued. “I had never heard of Vision Therapy, but it sounded like an adventure that I wanted to take,” Moore said. The timing was right, too. Moore had just graduated college, got married and moved to Harrodsburg from her hometown of Willisburg, Ky. It also helped that Dr. Graebe’s practice involved helping children. “I knew I wanted to work with kids,” she said. And she does. But she also works with

Warts: Common But Not Worrisome

have had warts on my hands and feet before. A lot of people have, especially as children. Warts are benign, extremely common growths that appear on the skin. Common warts (Verruca vulgaris) are caused by a few members of the large human papillomavirus (HPV) family. Warts appear as flesh-colored (or darker) growths on the skin either alone or in groups. They can be raised or relatively flat. Their texture can be rough or smooth. Sometimes, they will have little black seed-like dots in them (which are tiny clotted-off blood vessels). Warts are contagious: they can spread from one part of the body to another or from one person to another. This happens by direct touching of a wart or indirectly (such as by a shared towel or a rough surface like a pool deck or public shower). They are more likely to occur where the skin is roughed up or cut.

Avoid Medication Mistakes Medications are one of the leading causes of child poisoning, make sure your child stays safe with these tips: Put all medications out of sight and out of the child’s reach Never refer to your child’s medicine as “candy” Consider products that you may not classify as medicines - hand sanitizer, vitamins, diaper rash cream, eye drops, etc. Always use the dosing device included with the medication Have the poison control number saved in your phone: 1-800-222-1222

Keaston Is Making a Name for Himself

I

Keaston Brown SCHOOL: Henry Clay High GRADE: 12 SPORT: Basketball ACADEMICS: Keaston has a 4.14 GPA in advanced classes and is active as a volunteer. PARENTS: Katherine & Daniel

t’s not surprising that the story behind Keaston Brown’s first name has a sports connection. Keaston is a captain and three-year starter on the Henry Clay High basketball team that won 20 of its first 24 games this season and was ranked as high as No. 5 in the state. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior point guard has been an All-Region and AllCity player two years running, and is the floor leader for the Blue Devils. A model of consistency, he averages 12 points, four rebounds and a teamhigh six assists. He converts 80% of his free throws, 35% of his three-point shots and has a 3-1 assist to turnover ratio. But what about that first name of the family’s oldest of three sons? Mom (Katherine) wanted a name that began with a K. When her husband Daniel walked into the delivery room wearing an Easton baseball bat t-shirt, the family invented a name. Keaston’s brothers are Konlin, 14, and Kayson, 13. Dad wearing a sports t-shirt was no surprise either. Daniel starred in baseball and basketball at Nicholas County High and then at Berea College. He joined the Henry Clay basketball staff as an assistant in 1999 before serving as head coach at North Laurel and Bourbon County for one season each. He started his tenure as Henry Clay’s

head coach in 2006. Keaston took his first steps at the Henry Clay gym and is the only person who has seen as many Blue Devil basketball games as his father, who calls his son a coach’s dream. “He’s unselfish and a big-time playmaker,” Daniel said. “He’s smart and tough, and he makes everybody on the team better.” Keaston is on pace to become the first Henry Clay player in 15 years to score 1,000 points and have 300 assists. During the AAU season, Keaston played on the Adidas Gold Circuit, which draws the top players – and the top college coaches. Keaston has played in front of Roy Williams (North Carolina) and Jim Boeheim (Syracuse), both of whom have won national titles. Still, one of Keaston’s proudest moments came this season when the Blue Devils upset second-ranked Trinity of Louisville, 52-50, and the crowd stormed the court afterward. Keaston has a 4.14 weighted GPA and plans to play in college with aspirations of playing professionally someday. He will major in sports medicine or sports management in college, and might pursue the family business – coaching. “Basketball is in my blood,” Keaston said. “I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have basketball in my life.” Y

MARCH 2019

presents:

EDUCATOR OF THE MONTH Lauren Moorhead

W

hat does Lauren Moorhead think about her job as an eighth-grade science teacher at Jessie Clark Middle School? “It’s unfair,” she said.

Right, because science is tough and middle schoolers are even tougher? Nope. It’s the opposite. The only thing she loves more than teaching science are her students. “Middle schoolers get a bad reputation, but they are smart and kind,” she said. “They are terrific to work with. I have a wonderful job.” Moorhead especially appreciates the interaction she has with her science

“Science is such a part of everyday life and kids really want to understand what’s happening around them.”

students. “I really enjoy talking with them, and young people have such interesting insights and ask surprising questions.” During a discussion of the fight or flight response, a student wondered: “If you are scared, would a child run faster?” Another asked — after learning that cancer cells are constantly reproducing — whether patients are hungrier. After all, they must supply that extra energy. Moorhead describes herself as a passionate teacher with a knack for keeping students engaged. “It’s difficult to ignore someone who is so passionate,” she said. And that explains the second part of job enjoyment: the subject matter. “Science is such a part of everyday life,” she said, “and kids really want to understand what’s happening around them.” Moorhead employs project-based learning. She presented at a national conference on the process. Students complete a project every two weeks and then discuss the results — another opportunity for studentteacher engagement.

Moorhead’s first college major was animal science — until she found herself trying to corral a wayward sheep. “I thought, ‘This isn’t for me.’” Her mother suggested education and 11 years into her career, Moorhead has not looked back. “I was never top of my class so I understand kids who struggle. I make sure I explain things well to them,” she said. Moorhead is popular on campus and when word of this award spread, her paraeducator, Becky Johnson, created a blue ribbon for her (see above). Of course, the job is reward enough for Moorhead. “I am serving my community and my state by providing better citizens,” she said. “I’m also serving my purpose in life by bringing more joy into the world.” NOMINATIONS: Asbury University’s School of Education, which offers undergraduate and graduate degrees for young adults and working professionals in Kentucky and around the world, is pleased to honor world-class educators throughout Kentucky.
