For Best Result, Keep Playdates Simple, Easy

Editor

I

t’s a special thing when kids and parents can enjoy a playdate equally. It requires a special blend of similar discipline styles, an open-minded attitude, scheduling coordination – and that’s just on the parent side. My 7-year-old has known her best friend, Evie, since they were toddlers. Her mom, Kellie, and I quickly became best friends as well, and our playdates were as much for the adults as they were for the kids. While Pinterest has convinced me that some moms plan special activities and snacks for playdates, we took a much different approach. Our playdate blueprint: 1) Give children access to toys, crayons, etc. 2) Provide healthy snack upon request. The end. Kellie and I would stay within viewing distance but followed a policy of nonintervention. The girls were free to play as they wanted. We jumped in only if tears or shouting broke out.

Summer Camp Fair

Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 14 for the annual Fair and family fun day.

Lexington Children’s Theatre

Check out three shows this month including the annual Celebrity Curtain Call.

Our explanation to the kids was simple: If you’re not able to get along and work out your problems, we’ll just call it a day. We quickly learned that leaving the girls to their own devices helped them develop their own problem-solving skills. Both girls wanted the playdates to continue, so they figured out their own solutions. Disputes still occurred. But when both girls wanted the same game piece in “Candy Land,” they knew they had to resolve the issue or try another activity. Being comfortable with parallel play is another result of our policy. CeCe may want to play Barbies, but Evie wants to do an art project. So they play side-by-side and don’t try to force the other to join in. Playdates can be a lifeline for parents – opportunities to be social without kids are few and far between for many of us. Playdates also build our children’s social skills, if we let them. To find lasting friendships for the whole family is an added bonus. Y

Each month we consult with experts – our readers! – about parenting and ask a question on our Facebook page. March’s Question was:

What celebrity parent would you like to have a playdate with and why? t“Pink!! Both of my girls love her and think she is just a big ‘Mom kid’ that gets to do cool things.” – Laura Segari John t“Chrissy Teigen. She keeps it real and maybe John Legend can serenade us.” – Sarah Jewel Adams t“Kristen Bell. Just because she is down to earth and really tells it like it is. How to Discipline L Without Timeouts

D

o timeouts work with children? Consider the following scenario. Your boss gives you a project, and you work hard on it because you want to please her. Even though you’re not satisfied with it, you present it anyway.

Believing that the best way to motivate employees and change behavior is to lower the boom, she says: “What did you think you were doing?” “This is trash!” Then she marches you to a windowless room with a chair and says: “Now you just sit there and think about what you’ve done!” Your reaction: Disbelief. Anger. Humiliation. Hurt. Your thoughts: “How could she do this to me? This is stupid. She’s stupid. See if I ever go the extra mile for her again.” You might even spiral into negative thinking. “My presentation was bad. I’m bad. What’s the point of trying? It will never be enough.” Her response not only felt mean and insensitive, it was ineffective. Instead of motivated, you feel discouraged, angry, resentful. Now, imagine that instead of ridicule, your boss takes a moment before speaking. You both know that your project missed the mark. Your boss asks, “What do you think about the presentation?” You feel embarrassed and awkward. “I had a hard time. And it’s not my best work. I didn’t give it the time it needed.” “What can you do to improve it?” your boss asks. Relieved that she isn’t ripping you from stem to stern, you answer, “I could ask for advice and get more information. Some graphics and photos would improve it.” Your boss nods and says, “Is there anything you need from me to support you? This will need to be revised and ready to 8 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

present at corporate in one week.” Your reaction: Gratitude. Relief. Encouragement. Your thoughts: “I should not have tried to get away with that. I know I can do better. I don’t want to make that mistake again… that was a terrible experience! “My boss believes in me and cares about me.” Applied to the family situation, we can see that timeouts, as they are traditionally implemented, fall short – especially if a parent’s intention is to teach children to learn from their mistakes, make amends, and decide what they can do differently in the future. Instead of timeouts, try using Positive Guidance. Rather than sending her to a chair or her room, make a connection with your little one by getting close. Be curious about the mistake and listen. Ask what she learned and listen some more. If there is a mess to be cleaned, or something to be repaired or replaced, or a relationship to be healed, help the child decide how they will do it. Support your child and work alongside if need be, but don’t do it for them. This last step helps them learn to accept responsibility and to make amends. Fayette County Public Schools

Make a Difference: Read to a Child By: Emmanuel Caulk

Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent

O

n my favorite day of the month, nobody in the room cares that I’m the Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent. The 21 first-graders in Mrs. Middlebrooks’ class at Lansdowne Elementary School know I’m the person who cancels school when it snows. But the reason they get excited to see me is because they’ll each be getting a new book. As part of the “Read, Excel, Achieve, Lead” (REAL for short) mentoring program through Scholastic, community volunteers read aloud with students once a month. The program takes the guess work out of mentoring by providing volunteers with pre-selected books for each grade level, helpful tips on reading with the students and suggested discussion questions to ask. After we read together, students each receive a copy of the book to take home

and add to their personal libraries. I’m one of about 300 volunteers serving more than 7,500 students in 29 elementary schools across the district. Since the program launched in October, children have taken home more than 42,000 books. Our goal is to create a community of readers here in Fayette County by instilling a deep passion and love of reading in our students. Each school has adapted the program to fit the needs of their students, and in many buildings, the focus has been on “REAL Men Read” in an effort to bring more male role models into the classroom. National research shows that boys do not develop as readers at the same pace as girls. It means so much for the boys in the class to see men who enjoy reading. The REAL program is just one of the many initiatives under our Give 10 umbrella, which asks individuals in our community to give up to 10 hours a month to make a difference in the life of a child.

Schools across Fayette County have identified specific ways that volunteers can support students. The list includes long-term commitments like mentoring, tutoring or helping with extra-curricular activities, and onetime activities like chaperoning field trips, and assisting with book fairs, festivals or other school events. Through Give 10, the district will match people who want to volunteer with requests for help. Every single person who lives and works in Fayette County can make a difference in the life of a child – no matter where you live, how much you make or what level of education you have. Whether you want to get involved as an individual, or you want to join forces with people you work with, worship with or share a sorority or fraternity with, our kids need you. Will you consider joining us? Visit www.fcps.net/Give10 to get started. Y

Thank you to all of the volunteers who help support children in Lexington by: • Volunteering in the REAL Men Read program • Mentoring and tutoring students (small group or one-on-one) • Chaperoning field trips • Supervising on the playground • Helping with extra-curricular activities • Assisting with book fairs, festivals, and other school events

New Christian School: Respect For God, Others & Self

C

hristian Academy of the Bluegrass is one of the most recent additions to Lexington’s academic community. In just its second year of operation, it is making a name for itself by providing quality education and individual attention in a family-like environment built on Biblical principles at an affordable price: a tall order for a small school. “All CAB students are taught to strive for excellence in all things – academically, socially and spiritually,” Principal Jana Scott said. “We teach from a mastery learning paradigm. Studies are logical and sequential, and students do not move on until they have mastered the level they are working on. “We offer a personalized approach that maximizes each child’s unique potential within an environment of respect for God, oneself and others.” As a component of CAB’s emphasis on respect, all students follow a dress code. They earn points for good behavior, and enjoy rewards for their achievements. Occasional field trips provide unique learning experiences, and regular group discussions make the CAB day special. CAB was founded by members of the North Lexington Church of Christ, and currently operates in the Parkside Drive building the church outgrew but still owns.

This year, CAB has an enrollment of just 12 students, from grades three through nine.

How Often Do Children Need a Bath?

H

ow often children need baths may vary by culture and time, but there are recommendations that can give the modern caregiver some guidance. A newborn’s first bath has been given in hospitals shortly after birth. However, a variety of organizations, including the World Health Organization, are now recommending delaying the first bath for a few hours after birth. This gives the mother and infant time to try breastfeeding. The extra time also allows for the baby’s temperature and blood sugars to stabilize before being subjected to a cleaning. Because the sticky white vernix that covers newborns has antibacterial properties that help prevent certain germs from invading them, delaying a first bath can be helpful. Dr. Graebe Works With MLB Players

r. Rick Graebe realized every devout baseball fan’s cold weather wish last month – he hopped a plane in wintry Kentucky and three hours later disembarked in sunny Arizona to enjoy spring training. Along with 10 other optometrists, Dr. Graebe visited the winter home of the Oakland A’s in Mesa, outside of Phoenix. He took in a ballgame and ate a couple of hot dogs, but his trip to the Cactus League was actually a business excursion. He and the other optometrists are with The A Team – High Performance Vision Associates founded by Dr. Donald Teig, a pioneer in sports vision. At the invitation of the Oakland A’s – the team depicted in the movie “Money Ball” – the doctors collected data on the visual systems of Oakland ballplayers. In no other sport than baseball is vision so crucial to an athlete. Consider the challenge that faces every major league batter. Standing 60-feet-6 inches away atop a

5-Time Champ Leads LexCath to State Title

T

Zach Hils School: Lexington Catholic High GRADE: 11 Sport: Swimming Academics: Zach carries a 3.57 GPA, and is a member of the honor roll and the National Spanish Honor Society. That’s despite missing 20 days of school to swimming. Parents: Kim & Andy

he first time Zach Hils of Lexington Catholic High swam the grueling 400-yard individual medley event, he popped out of the pool and declared: “That was rough. I’m never doing that again.” When he was informed that he had just completed a Sectional cut time, Zach changed his mind in a hurry. Five years later, the IM is one of his best events – but not his only one. Zach, 17, is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound junior who won two more State high school titles in February. He claimed gold in the 100 butterfly and the 200 IM, in which he lowered his own State record to 1:46.38. He also helped the Knights to their first State swim championship in nearly 30 years. The individual victories swelled his State title total to five. As a freshman, he won the 200 IM and the 100 freestyle and added another 200 IM title in 2017. “The State meet was really exciting,” Zach said. “I really wanted the team to win. The school meets are the most fun.” The high school season, when he is coached by Dave Little, is a small part of Zach’s calendar. Since he was young, he has been a top age-group swimmer in both long and short course seasons, when he is coached by Dave Doolin. His 200 IM time ranks him sixth in the nation among all 17-year-olds. In 2016, he won the 200 IM in the National Futures event in Atlanta.

Scholar Athlete Scholarship: $3,000 Two Scholar Athletes a year will be picked at random to share the $3,000 Darrell B. Pulliam Memorial Scholarship provided by Mike Pulliam, a Rector Hayden Realtor and instructor at Man O’ War Golf. Other contributors are Howard Smith of Smith Garage Equipment, Barry and Mike Barrett of Auto Excel, local accountant Kenny Frank and Dairy Queen franchise owner Paul Wright. 54 | www.lexingtonfamily.com

In October, USA Swimming invited him as one of only two swimmers in his event to work out for four days at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado. It’s been easy for Zach to accomplish so much. All he has to do is wake up at 4:20 in the morning a couple days a week, swim up to 8,000 yards a day, practice both before and after school and take only one day off a week. Yeah, a real piece of cake. Fortunately, Zach loves the water, has discipline flowing out of his ears, works like a madman and has an Olympicsized competitive spirit. “He’s tenacious, a fierce competitor and he’s humble until it’s game on,” said his mother Kim, a former volleyball player at UK. She also coached at Centre College. His dad, Andy, played rugby at UK. Swimming takes up so much of Zach’s time – he misses up to 20 days of school a year – it’s a wonder he can make the honor roll. But he does. He carries a 3.57 GPA and is a member of Beta Club and the National Spanish Honor Society. That’s while juggling homework between phone calls from college coaches. Zach is a top recruit and is awaiting results of his ACT score before choosing a school. After one more year at Lexington Catholic, then comes college and then... maybe the Olympics. At this rate, don’t bet against him. Y

April 2018 presents:

educator of the month

Janet Jones “The best part of the job is seeing kids be successful. When they are excited, I get excited, too.”

I

t’s nearly 5 o’clock on a Friday afternoon – which is the end of another long work week – and special education teacher Janet Jones is not only still at the Veterans Park Elementary School, but she’s as fresh as a first-year teacher. Considering all Jones does at the school, that’s saying something. Along with teaching, Jones works one on one with students before school, is a K-TIP mentor to a new teacher, is one of the directors of the after-school program and frequently attends special programs at the school in the evenings. Oh, and in between academic years, she teaches summer school. “I’m less tired after a day of teaching than I was after a work day when I was a banker,” Jones said. A business administration major in college, she worked at a bank in Lexington for 18 years until she abruptly quit when the job became one that required extensive travel. “I didn’t have any jobs lined up, but I knew that I had to put my children first,” she said. Jones wasn’t out of work for long as she found a calling after just two weeks. A very good friend recommended her for an open middle school teaching position at Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary in Lexington.

After a short stint at Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary, Jones moved to Veterans Park Elementary – as a tutor and classroom assistant – because her children attended the school. Three years later, in 2003, she was offered a position as a special education teacher. Her new career in education was on its way. At first, Jones worked hard to earn her emergency certification. Fifteen years later, she holds a master’s degree in special education and is a National Board Certified teacher. She also was selected to become one of the first special education teachers in Fayette County to be a co-teacher. As part of her work day, she co-teaches two language arts classes – one for fifth graders, the other for fourth. “I felt honored to be selected for this, and the program is working very well,” she said. The rest of the school day, Jones enjoys working both one on one and in small groups with her students. Now well into her second career, Jones has no plans to slow down. “I’m energized and motivated to do my very best every day,” she said. “The best part of the job is seeing my kids be successful. When they are excited, I get excited, too.”
