Four Educators Explain: What Makes a Successful Field Trip

M Erin Smith 4th grade Nicholasville Elementary 15 years experience Field Trip: Mammoth Cave National Park Highlight: Science Came to Life

ammoth Cave was a natural match for the fourth grade science curriculum that Erin Smith was teaching. Her goal was to teach Earth Science concepts like weathering, erosion and cave formation in a way that was memorable and applicable. But lots of pieces go into the puzzle of field trips, from coordinating with the lesson plan requirements to cost to the students. “When we took our Mammoth Cave trips, they were cost prohibitive for many families, unless we did extensive fundraising,” Smith said.

F Laura Crance 2nd grade Booker T. Washington 10 years experience Field Trip: McConnell Springs Highlight: Nature Exploration

ield trips can sometimes pose a “chicken or the egg” question: What comes first: the field trip of the learning objective, according to Laura Crance. Her second grade classroom focused on meadow and forest habitats and how animals depend on their surroundings for survival. McConnell Springs was the ideal backdrop to explore those topics. “The learning objectives for the field trip were ‘I can identify the meadow and forest habitats’ and ‘I can identify animals that live in a forest and meadow habitat,’” Crance said. Teachers can supplement the

“Availability of buses, willingness and availability of parent volunteers, support from coteachers and administration, student interest – all must be considered in order for the trip to be successful.” In the end, Smith was proud of the impact the field trip had on her students – many of whom said it was the highlight of the year. “We took many parents as volunteers who had never experienced (Mammoth Cave) either,” she said. “It was magical to see their faces light up with wonder, and for the science to come alive for them.”

field trip with material they already have in the classroom, or, Crance suggested, use online books such as Capstone to provide the students with more information. The opportunity to explore nature is a rare one for some students, Crance said. Seeing wildlife brought out exuberant reactions from the students. “They couldn’t quit talking about seeing fish, butterflies, different kinds of turtles, bunnies, trees, bat houses, geese and deer,” she said. “They were so engaged in learning about the different habitats and animals.”

Sarah Cummins Director Redwood Cooperative School 10 years experience Field Trip: Lexington Legends Game Highlight: Seeing Math in Action

s a small, project-based school, Redwood Cooperative has the opportunity to take students on field trips often. From reading “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory” and visiting a local candy factory, to collecting used cooking oil to turn into biofuel, the students often find themselves out in the community applying their classroom learning. Last year, Grades 2-4 studied statistics – probabilities, averages, frequently occurring numbers. After working on the lesson plan, students attended a Lexington Legends baseball game to see how statistics are applicable in sports. “Field trips should be an ex-

lanning field trips can be a complicated dance, said Jessica Sauls. Teachers must contact the location, get transportation lined up, and get approval from the Site-Based Decision Making committee, on top of creating the accompanying lesson plan. But the effort hassle is worth it to expose students to new adventures. Sauls took her kindergarten class to the Cincinnati Zoo and discovered the journey there was as exciting as the actual zoo. “My Kindergarten class loved the zoo,” she said. “A lot of them have never even left Lexington so getting on the

tension of what happens in the classroom,” Cumins said. “It gets students out in the community and able to see people who actually have careers in these fields. It’s that real world experience.” Letting the students inspire the field trips often lends the best results, Cummins said. Activities emerge based on student interests. “Our teachers watch and listen to see what the students are passionate about and then we fit in the Core content areas,” Cummins said. “There is only so far you can take certain lessons within the classroom, which is why it is so important for us to teach beyond the classroom.” interstate and seeing all the different cars was huge for them. “I always like to try to think about things that the majority of my kids may never be able to experience.” Field trips are an excellent teaching tool, but Sauls views them as more than that. The trips she plans are especially important to some children who wouldn’t get to visit these locations at all if not for the class field trip. “I teach in a low income school so it’s even more important to my kids to get to go explore their community and world around them,” Sauls said. From Stingrays & Whale Sharks to A Famous Third Baseman Memorable Field Trips: Georgia Aquarium and MLB Stadium By: Connor Corcoran

T

here’s nothing as thrilling as hearing your teacher utter those two little words: “field trip.” Immediately, the class roars with excitement as smiles flash across every face in the room. Two excursions stand out for me for entirely different reasons – the Georgia Aquarium and Turner Field, former home of the Atlanta Braves. The Aquarium – still the world’s largest – served as the classic educational experience. We learned about exotic sea life, marine biology, underwater ecosystems – and we had fun doing it. A singular memory was the Ocean Voyager gallery, which includes an underwater panoramic viewing tunnel. Gliding around and over us were four of the world’s largest fish species – the whale shark. As intimidating as these enormous creatures were, we learned that these gentle giants pose no significant threat to humans and are sometimes amenable to allowing divers to catch a ride! We also witnessed and studied schools of predatory trevally jacks, squadrons of stingrays, goliath groupers and several other species of sharks. Throughout the tour of the Aquarium, I was astonished by the immensity of the American Alligator and amused by the pint-sized African Penguin. Perhaps it’s unusual that a 12-year-old boy would be so dazzled by a vast building filled with sea life, but there’s no surprise 16

about my reaction to Turner Field. A baseball stadium might stretch the definition of an “educational” field trip, but that was of little concern to me as a 10-year-old sports fanatic. The Braves’ tour guide led us around the stadium rattling off facts about the venue and the history of the organization. As a Little Leaguer, I saw my wildest dreams turn to reality the moment I stepped foot on the freshly cut grass of that big-league diamond. Toward the end of the field trip, we were allowed to run the bases and all of us baseball players pretended we had belted home runs before doing it. As I rounded those bases, I didn’t think the day could get any better. But after I crossed home plate and made my way to the Braves dugout, standing before us was future Hall of Famer and my personal hero, Chipper Jones. Wearing his official Atlanta Braves batting practice threads, Chipper said: “Don’t ever be afraid to fail.” I have attempted to live by those words each and every day – and as a recent college graduate of the University of Kentucky, I can honestly say it has shaped the person I have become today. A long-time Atlanta sports fan, Connor Corcoran is a UK graduate who worked as an intern at Lexington Family Magazine in the summer of 2018. Field Trip & Activity Guide 2018-2019
