PROGRAMS | LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I am honored to serve as Lexington County’s fifth library director. Growing up in Lexington — with Lexington County values — and being a part of the library’s leadership team have enabled me to not only understand what’s important to our community but also to develop library services to meet those needs.

As we look forward to a new school year and a change in seasons, we innately set new goals. As a lifelong student, planning for my next new endeavor is exciting to me and I hope that it is for you as well.

The library staff have developed excellent programs and workshops covering topics from early literacy to technology. As we move into the next chapter of our lives, whether you are from Chapin or Swansea, consider this your guidebook to engage, enrich and connect with your community.

COOLEST CARD SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY

CARD SIGN-UP MONTH What is the easiest way to ensure your child’s academic success? Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Lexington County Public Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that every student has the most import school supply of all — a library card.

Resources at the library are available to anyone who has a library card. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs and knowledgeable staff that support academic achievement.

STAY SAFE: CYBER SECURITY October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. This technology safety campaign is spearheaded by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA).

Here at the Lexington County Public Library we work to help educate the public about being safe online.

One of the most common scams that can happen to people online is what is known as the “fake check scam.” In this scam contact is made with a person or small business offering something for sale online.

The scammer sends a fake check to the seller, who then deposits the check in to their checking account.

The scammer then asks the seller to wire a portion of that check to a third party. Ultimately the check bounces at the bank and the seller looses the money that they wired to the third party.

In another common scam a “lucky winner” will be sent an email from a legitimate looking business or sweepstakes company informing them that they have won a big cash prize, vacation, or product like a new TV. The only catch is that the lucky winner first has to wire money to the company to cover processing costs or shipping. Unfortunately there is no prize and the “lucky winner” has lost the money they sent to pay for processing or shipping.

Remember to guard your confidential and private information and remember that if something online sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

SUMMER READING WAS A HUGE SUCCESS Summer reading is over and we’ve just finished one of our most successful years yet. We had something for everyone including children’s programs by the Columbia Marionette Theatre, Lunch Money, Chad Crews and Tim Sonefelt. Teens dove into computer coding, online comics, zombie makeup and superhero trivia. They also attended reading clubs, movie nights, gaming classes, craft workshops and more.

The library presented programming to help adults escape from the ordinary and partnered with bestselling authors and presenters including Mary Alice Monroe, Ron Rash, Kim Boykin, Tom Poland and Karen White. Local speakers presented programs about local history, crafting, food, music and writing.

Our success would not have been possible without help from over 150 national and locally owned businesses including Chic-fil-A, CiCi’s Pizza, Texas Roadhouse, Applebee’s, Private Property, Chicken Salad Chick, The Deli, Libby’s, O’Charleys, Urban Nirvana, Wingard’s Nursery, Catch 22, Seven Oaks Plant Shop, Groucho’s Deli, the Columbia Museum of Art and many more. Our ongoing partnerships with presenters and our local community allowed us to provide another year of exceptional programming for our children, teen and adult patrons. As summer reading continues to grow we continue to look for new and innovative programming that fits the needs of our community.

And remember, now that summer reading is over — it’s time to go back to school. The Lexington County Public Library offers free access to educational databases, reference books, eBooks and study rooms. Our knowledgeable staff is here to help you find what you are looking for. We can’t wait for summer reading next year — great work super heroes.
