Where has the endangered snail darter gone?

M

acLeod and Jerry Bellune love traveling together and spending their children’s inheritance. This is an account of their travel to the Southwest and back on blue highways, not interstates.

Tellico Village, TN

One of our favorite travel jokes is this: Many people become lost in thought because they are entering unfamiliar territory.

Tennessee isn’t unfamiliar territory to us but it is a wide state like North Carolina and takes hours to cross.

We were headed for Tellico, a beautiful little retirement village on Tellico Lake in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains a few miles south of Knoxville.

Our cousin Jim Bellune who grew up in South Carolina now calls it home.

We had called from the road to make sure he would be at home. He took our cell phone call in Asheville where he had driven his wife Mary, an airline attendant, to catch a flight. He suggested we meet him at a Tellico restaurant, Ashby’s.

Mary had given up her job in Indiana after Jim was offered what they thought would be a dream job as a Tellico retirement community executive.

The village was built on 5,000 acres on Tellico Lake with three top ranked championship golf courses and boating, fishing, swimming and waterfront living.

Life is filled with unexpected blessings and curses.

This job turned out to be one from hell. He resigned.

We drove down to see the lake and the infamous Tellico Dam which the snail darter and the U.S. Supreme Court had halted.

The high court halted the dam as it might make the fish extinct by blocking its migratory route.

Five years later, common sense finally prevailed when federal officials transferred the species to the Hiwassee River in southeastern Tennessee. We were 30 years too late. The snail darter had vamoosed.

At the inn the next morning, we met Dominick, a dark-haired first-grader with what has to be the world’s shortest attention span.

He approached our table, introduced himself and said he and his mother were traveling from Little Rock, AR, to Michigan to meet his father and sister.

We invited his mother to join us and she began cutting up Dominick’s waffle.

After two bites, he was up and exploring the cereal bar. He returned with a box of Cheerios and his mother helped him open it and poured milk for him.

Two more bites and Dominick overturned the cereal, flooding our table.

We mopped up the mess and marveled at his mother’s calm attitude. Dominick may have the world’s shortest attention span but his mother has the world’s

Journey’s end

We loaded our luggage in the car and headed southeast on I-40. It is a winding, mountain road with steep grades and runaway truck ramps that lead through the Smokies, western North Carolina and finally our home state.

After three weeks on the road, we were ready to sleep in our own bed.

It had been a great trip, most of it on two lane roads through small towns with limited lodgings but little cafes where you can talk with local folks and find out what’s on their minds.

This is what we like to call the real America, where plain folks like us live, raise

Hackers stole information on about 143 million people from one of the nations three major credit reporting agencies.

That is almost half the U.S. population.

The data stolen could be social security numbers, addresses, birthdays, names, credit card data and other information.

Equifax found the breach at the end of July but failed to let the public know until now.

They claim the breach has been stopped and fixed.

What happens now?

At this point don’t just wait and see if your data was taken.

Equifax has created a website www.equifaxsecurity2017.com to help consumers find out if their information was affected.

You can also sign up for free credit monitoring and identity theft protection.

Here’s the problem.

The monitoring is through an Equifax company. Will you trust a service owned by the people who were hacked?

What about the fact that the monitoring doesn’t start right away? It gives you a date as to when it will start.

Still trust them?

If you sign up for monitoring you must agree you won’t bring or join a classaction lawsuit against them.

One is already being filed.

A little bit of tin and paint creates a lovely epergne

As you can imagine, Equifax stock is plummeting as of the writing of this article Friday.

What you may not know is that the Equifax execs dumped their shares of stock days after they found the breach.

Doesn’t that qualify as insider trading? That’s what Martha Stewart went to prison for, wasn’t it?

Now we know why it took them so long to reveal it.

What can you do?

1. Watch your credit.

Watch it closely.

2. Setup fraud alerts with the credit bureaus.

3. While you’re doing that. set up a credit freeze. You’ll have to set up a PIN to use to unfreeze it as well.

his lovely centerpiece with light green paint over tin was made in France circa 1930. It rests on a circular base with three small, decorative feet holding it aloft.

The complicated nature of the metal leaves that surround the hob nail glass insert was intended to hold a series of clear tubes that were to be filled with an assortment of flower stems and berries.

The center insert of hob nail glass would have held a bouquet of sweet smelling flowers that could be removed and taken from room to room, or even out and about with a proper lady to keep the stench of the streets at bay.

This example is called an epergne as it features multiple arms that hold multiple stems of flowers.

The idea of a centerpiece to hold fruit and flowers is not a new one. I have appraised epergnes made as early as 1700.

Many of you have viewed paintings that date back many centuries that feature fruit and flowers as focal points.

So appealing was the idea,

that Tiffany crafted an exquisite pattern of sterling in the 1870s, calling it “fruit and flowers.” It is beautifully rendered to give status to the common foods – the tomato, the blackberry, the strawberry, to name just a few. They reign in silver splendor over nearly all other silver of this time period.

This epergne was used often by my grandmother. She loved to fill it with a single, special camellia gathered from our 150-year-old bushes. The surrounding flower tubes she filled with nandina. These were all things found in our garden at a particular time of the year.

Now that I am older, I can see the peace and tranquility she found in doing so. The idea of a “simple pleasure” is beautifully expressed by this nearly 100-yearold piece of painted tin.

The Lake Murray Fishing Report Lake Murray water levels are at 356.57 (full pool is 360.00), and water temperatures have dropped into the lower 80s. Clarity is still good.

After an extremely successful Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Murray, a parade of anglers rotated through offshore spots, often loaded up with cane piles, and throwing topwater baits including pencil poppers, Spooks, flukes and more to draw up suspended bass or target actively busting fish.

Anglers new to this technique who followed the action online, or who followed in a boat and were actually able to mark waypoints, thought they would also be able to match the 20-pound sacks caught during the event.

In the weeks following the tournament it has become ap-

parent that, while the offshore suspended pattern has now gone mainstream, Lake Murray in late summer is still tough.

The FLW anglers (and locals fishing around the same time) hit a really good week for a variety of reasons, but weights have

dropped significantly since then.

Some of the best anglers on the lake fished a roughly 50-boat benefit tournament recently, and only about 20 anglers weighed in.

The winning anglers were Andrew Allen and Chris Vickery from Greenwood, and they won the event with a weight in the 17s. They caught five fish all day on three cane piles, showing that the pattern is certainly still there, but don't expect to catch 20 pounds every time you do it.

One other pattern is about to come online. The shallow bite is still off, but as the fall progresses expect more fish to be caught on buzzbaits around the bank.

In the Oakley Big Bass Tournament on Sept. 23-24, expect some of the better fish to be caught this way.

In striped bass news, Captain Brad Taylor (803331-1354) reports that with cool-

ing water temperatures the pattern has started to change a little.

The bulk of the fish are still being caught on down rods fishing live herring, but the depth range is now 40-80 feet.

The shallower end of that range has more small fish.

There is also some schooling on the lower end, and locating these fish is simply a matter of keeping your eyes open.

These same fish are also being caught on free-lines fished out over open water when they are not busting on the surface.

Right now, the bulk of the better fish are in the main water between Shull Island and the dam, and as you start to go back in the creeks you can locate plenty of smaller ones.

Before long, bigger fish will start to go into the creeks following threadfin shad schools.

On the crappie front, Brad re-

ports that with cooling temperatures fish should be starting to turn back on.

Like the striper, they will be pushing back into creeks to eat small threadfin shad, and that means right now you should look in the mouths of creeks up the lake around brush.

Ten feet down over about 15-20 feet is a good place to start. Fish will also be found around deeper docks in the 15-foot range.

In catfish news, Captain William Attaway (803-924-0857) reports that 30 feet continues to be a good depth range to target during the day, while at night 1525 feet is a good range.

Fish will be found off long points and humps, and fishing the deeper side of channel buoys on the lake is a good bet.

Dip baits are hard to beat although the herring bite has also been picking up.

After five weeks of high school football, only three Chronicle Country teams are undefeated Gilbert and Irmo head into Week Four with 4-0 marks.

White Knoll sports a 3-0 record coming off a ‘bye’.

While this marks the second straight year the Indians have jumped out to an unblemished mark, it’s been a while for both the Yellow Jackets and Timberwolves.

White Knoll had a more recent 3-0 mark back in 2013, head coach Dean Howell’s first season.

Irmo fans have to go back to 2005 for the last 4-0 start.

Either the Timberwolves or Yellow Jackets will taste defeat when the two teams meet Sept. 29 in the “Wolf’s Den”. Before that clash, each has a challenging path before them the next couple of weeks.

It begins Thursday for Irmo on the road with a Region 5-5A opener against Blythewood. The Bengals have won the last three meetings after starting the series 0-4, but are coming off a 28-9 loss at rival Westwood.

The following week, It’s the annual “Battle of the Dam” matchup with Lexington. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series 35-13-1, but have dropped the last two meetings.

White Knoll has an even more challenging path as it faces two undefeated teams back to back. The first is at home Friday against North Augusta, who handed the Lexington Wildcats their first loss of the season 40-14 Sept. 8.

The next week, the Timberwolves head to Spring Valley to face a Vikings’ team which has outscored their first four opponents 179-54.

They also have senior Channing Tindall, considered the top-rated linebacker in the state with the University of South Carolina, Auburn, Florida and Georgia among potential suitors.

‘Got you covered’: Veterans honored with Quilts of Valor at local home

Comfort can be physical or emotional.

Quilts of Valor are both, as well as symbolic.

The patterns and colors, fabric and batting symbolize somebody cares enough to create a work of art and present it to you.

Charles and Heidi Thornton deliver and present lovingly handmade quilts to former military service personnel in hospitals, churches, and private and residential homes to convey thanks of a grateful nation.

Eleven residents of Presbyterian Home welcomed the Thorntons back recently.

The couple represents South Carolina in the national Quilts of Valor initiative.

“The program, active in all fifty states, recognizes South Carolina as the most patriotic state in the union,” Heidi said.

“So far our state has made and presented more than 7,000 quilts. The next closest state on the list is California which has made and presented 600 quilts.”

Heidi explained the Quilts of Valor Foundation runs on donations — monetary, material and talent.

“There may be yard or bake sales that bring in some money, but primarily it’s people who care about those who defend our country, giving funds or their time and expertise.”

Thornton said in this region, the sewing work takes place Tuesdays from 10 am to 4 p.m. when quilters converge at the former Calhoun County Library building in St. Matthews.

“Sewing machines are set up there, but some of the sewers bring in their own machines, and they also can take home kits, like pre-cut fabric in zip-lock bags, to work on during the week.”

Thornton said the program began in 2003 not long after its founder, Katherine Roberts, had a dream.

“Her son, Nat, was serving in Afghanistan. The dream was of a soldier, sitting on a cot, shivering, seemingly in despair; war demons were pulling him down.

When she finally got back to sleep, the dream continued, only this time the soldier was wrapped in a quilt and looked comfortable, like he was at peace.”

Ross awoke to a strong sense of mission: to see that soldiers were comforted.

With the help of friends, she started making quilts.

“The first quilt was presented at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center – to an amputee,” Thornton said.
