Girls Dreaming Big

It seems as if culture and society have conspired to pack the high school years with so many daunting challenges that even the most adept adolescent feels overloaded. However, there is a lot more to school than just books and studying. It is a chance to get involved in different clubs and organizations, allowing students to grow in leadership skills, make new friends, and enhance their academic lives.

West’s newest club, Girls Dreaming Big, offers the same opportunities and more.

“My main purpose of making [Girls Dreaming Big] was to make sure girls feel as though they can achieve their own success and do that through dreaming big, coming up with their own ideas [and] things they want to do, and following through with them,” said club sponsor Carrie Harvey. “I think it’s really important for girls to have that self-confidence to know they can do whatever they want.”

The club is applicable for all grade levels and meets every Monday

after school for about an hour. Every different ways to deal with stress. Every month, it has a different theme that month they also have an event where they applies to each meeting. In September, go out and socialize within the group. the members concentrated on stress For their first outing the members went management.

During one of their meetings, they had a inspirational and wellrounded guest speaker who had completed three halfmarathons and a full Ironman and is the head of one of the U.S. Banks in Chesterfield.

“There’s nothing like it in this school [where] girls help each other and encourage each other,” said senior Taylor Hepler. “Everyone is so excited to be there, [and] everyone is happy and really into what they are doing.”

For October, the club focused on anti-bullying and beginning the process of planning the passion project.

They discussed whether bullying can be avoided in high school, and had a social gathering watching Mean Girls.

For the month of November, the girls are focusing on gratitude and taking the steps necessary to start their passion project.

“We’re going to pick what we are going to do, like muffins with mom or a fashion show,” said Hepler. “It is going to be something to raise money and get girls and the school involved. Then, we are going to donate that money to a charity.”

No matter what the goal is, Girls Dreaming Big club is a great way to help empower young women and help in achieving those dreams.

Equestrian, derived from the Latin word equester, means “belonging to a horseman.” Senior Lesley Golden is an equestrian. She has always been fascinated by horses.

“When I was 5, [my parents and I] went to a couple barns and asked if they taught lessons there, but I was too little to start riding,” said Golden. “[But finally] I did start when I was 7.”

She currently owns two horses of her own, Blondie and Vera. Every day she is at her barn riding her horses for half an hour to an hour and teaching them new skills to improve their jumping.

Afterwards, she spends more time grooming and taking care of them, which can typically take about two hours per horse.

Horseback riding is not something to be taken lightly. It takes a lot of time and patience, sometimes even giving up hanging out with friends. Golden spends an average of four to five days a week out at the barn. But it is all worth it because she has made a bond that cannot be broken with her horses.

“You can communicate with your horse, but you’re not sure if they can understand you,” said Golden.

“You have to create your own system of communication that takes many hours to perfect.”

Golden plans to continue her equestrian adventure throughout college as well, taking her horses along with her and minoring in equestrian studies.

Sophomore Keenan Wallace picked up skateboarding when he was 12 years old. After trying football in eighth grade, he figured it was not his calling and realized skateboarding was what he was most comfortable with.

“[The benefits of skateboarding are] you can practice whenever you want to, unlike football where there is a set time everyday,” said Wallace.

He enjoys it so much because it is something his friends and he have in common and enjoy doing together on a daily basis.

Just like typical high school athletes, he and his friends not only just skate for fun but also attend competitions to show off all their time and dedication to this hobby. There are different events one can enter themselves in at one of these competitions.

“A Jam is where a bunch of people skate at once.

Then there is Best Trick where the judges judge you based on performance and difficulty of your trick,” said Wallace.

Wallace uses skateboarding to help him with his ultimate goal which is to be a photographer. He takes pictures of his friends hitting their tricks at the park to improve his photography skills.

Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, a combat sport, and a self defense system that not many people take part in, but freshman Harsh Jaswal is one of those few. He just started last year around Christmas time and continues to master this art.

“I saw a commercial on TV and that is how I found out about it,” said Jaswal.

He is still on the first white belt, but he has already gotten three ribbons. To move up a belt, one must acquire four ribbons, which are given to a student when the instructor feels like the student is ready for the next level. The closest sport Jiu-Jitsu could be compared to is wrestling because the goal is to take someone out by fighting from the ground.

“It’s not a traditional fighting style,” said Jaswal.

“It’s Brazilian, [and] you use your hands and your whole body to fight someone.”

But like many other styles of fighting, Jiu-Jitsu can potentially be dangerous because people are using a special type of fighting where injuries could happen very easily.

“I almost got my arm broken [while] fighting someone,” said Jaswal.

To prevent injuries, one must tap out, letting the other person know that they have won and that the person tapping out has had enough.

For now, Jaswal practices Jiu-Jitsu just recreationally, but if he shows skill and potential for this hobby, he plans to go as far as he can. The ultimate goal is a black belt with a red ribbon.

Look for sales ahead of time

Check online ads and newspapers at least a week before shopping. It is best to go into a store and know exactly what to get and where to get it. Have a plan to get in and out as quickly as possible. Being swift helps to avoid a violent crowd. Never enter a store with no knowledge of what items are on sale.

Compare prices

“Never go to just one store and think you got the best deal,” said junior Brittney Bartlett.

This is supposed to be the best shopping of the year, so be sure to look around and try to find the lowest of the low prices. Usually Black Friday sales for clothes are not rare sales. Look for 40 percent off or more for non-expensive brands and 30 to 35

German teacher Thomas Mueller has a love for the game of chess because he enjoys the excitement and rush when he wins a game. His dad taught him how to

play when he was 10 years old.

“It is a game of intelligence and logic,” said Mueller.

Although it has become increasingly harder to find people with enough time to sit down and play a game with, Herr Mueller has found an alternative to the traditional game. Three years ago, Herr Mueller came across the app Blitz Chess.

The objective is to play chess in under a minute. This way he can play a lot of games in a short amount of time. The app also allows one to play chess with people from all parts of the world.

“I play at least 100 games on my phone a day,” said Mueller. “It doesn’t create too many problems, but ever so often, I forget what time it is and end up playing all night. Sometimes I get too passionate and throw my phone.”

When he retires, Mueller would like to become a member of the St. Louis Chess society.

When shopping for clothes, a lot of great deals can be found at Marshalls and TJMaxx. Also, Small Business Saturday is a good way to beat the Black Friday crowds and contribute to the local economy.

These days, most of the in-store sales can be found online. With events like Cyber Monday, customers can skip the crowded stores and shop with ease.

So instead of bustling through crowded department stores, click through the best deals while in pajamas and have a laugh at all the people who decided to go out.

Biology teacher Justina Davitz is always looking for an adventure and loves spending time outdoors. While she was attending college at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Davitz served in the army. Her responsibility was to drive tractor trailer trucks that relocated supplies to different base points.

“Sometimes we did not know what the contents of the load were, just that they were hazardous” said Davitz. She was also the .50 caliber machine gun operator for her unit.

After college, Davitz acquired the hobby of traveling and being outdoors. She has been to Canada, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Rome, and England.

“I like experiencing different cultures and eating different types of foods,” said Davitz.

Along with traveling, cold weather primitive camping is another hobby Davitz enjoys. She tries to go at least two to three times a year, although she would like to go more if she had the time. Davitz likes to go primitive camping because it is a good way

to disconnect from her busy work life and spend time with her husband.

“The responsibilities are minimal, yet crucial,” said Davitz. “You have to know how to find fuel for your fire and how to set up a good camp or you will be miserable.”

Davitz likes to get out and explore what this world has to offer. She just lives life to its highest potential.

Media Tech teacher Don Frazier was once on the U.S. Olympic team for throwing boomerang. Although he does not throw as often as before, he was once ranked second in accuracy and 45th out of

435 competitors in fast catch.

In Frazier’s sport, there are many events such as distance, accuracy, speed, and catching. According to a player’s time and performance, he/she is awarded a series of points. Based on how many points a player collects determines his/her rank amongst other opponents.

“I [watched] a tournament in Forest Park, bought a boomerang, and got hooked,” said Frazier.

Ever since that day, he has been throwing boomerangs and even making his own from scratch. Sadly, not many people know about this sport, as it is becoming even less popular. There once were 18 boomerang tournaments around the time he first started throwing, but that number has since diminished to six. However finding the time to practice, or the time to travel to tournaments is difficult with being a teacher.

“I wish I would get back into it,” said Frazier.

The world can only wait and see what action will be taken next in the struggle over Crimea.

The dangers of St. Louis

On Oct. 1, thousands joined the pro-democracy protests that have spread throughout Hong Kong on China’s 65th National Day. The people of Hong Kong want to freely vote on Hong Kong’s next chief executive without the interference of China’s National People’s Congress. There have been more violent clashes between relentless protestors and the police.

Phelps suspended

Police arrested Olympic swimmer, Michael Phelps, on a DUI charge early Tuesday, Sept. 30. He was also charged with excessive speeding and crossing double-line lanes in Maryland. Phelps acknowledged his arrest and issued an apologetic statement later that afternoon.

USA Swimming suspended Phelps and forced him to withdraw from next year’s world championships. He also lost six months of funding from the sport’s national governing body.

The city of St. Louis has been known as one of the most violent cities in America for years, often earning itself a rank as one of the top five most dangerous cities in the United States on news networks such as KMOV, CNN, and US News. According to businessinsider.com, Missouri’s “gateway to the west” claims a spot within the top 50 of “The Most Dangerous Cities in the World.” St. Louis is only one of the world’s 4416 cities and only .01 percent of the world population, yet it still stands out because of theft, and crimes such as homicide.

Most teens consider the downtown St. Louis area to be generally safe. Places like The Loop, Arch, City Museum, and Busch Stadium can be exciting and culturally educational when visiting downtown, but if one ventures beyond these tourist spots, the city changes for the worse.

According to neighborhoodscout. com, St. Louis civilians have a one in 14 chance of being susceptible to burglary and theft, whether that be personal items or motor vehicles.

Not only does St. Louis have rocketing crime rates, but drugs have become a growing problem in the downtown area.

Forbes describes St. Louis as

“lying directly in the path of major drugtrafficking routes. St. Louis has been plagued by murders and other violent crimes for years. The crime rate fell four percent last year - and it's down 50 percent from the crack epidemic days of the early 1990’s - but St. Louis still ranked fourth in the nation for murders.”

Neighborhoodscout.com states that the twelfth most dangerous street in America is Delmar Boulevard at North Euclid Avenue. The street is filled with poverty. Along with being filled with poverty, their income is 94.7 percent lower than other United States neighborhood.

Fountain Park, otherwise known as Martin Luther King Drive, is not only dangerous, but also falling apart. Since 2010 there have been 24 condemned buildings due to unfit living arrangements, fires, and old age, according to Dynamics-Stlouismo.gov. There are over 100 abandoned residential and commercial buildings in the area in 2014. This is almost double than that of 2012.

Citizens outside St. Louis City live in ignorant bliss, and they do not realize how safe their suburban paradise really is compared to the dangers of the inner city. Some suburban mothers do not feel safe letting their kids ride their bikes around their safe-ranked neighborhood, yet in reality some inner city moms in certain

areas cannot even let their kids play in their front yards due to high neighborhood crime rates. Already this year riots have been pouring the downtown streets, and multiple drug rings have been uncovered, and 2014 is yet to be finished.

A remake is a movie that has been made again, just differently, like December’s Annie starring Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhane Wallis. A sequel is a movie that continues the story or theme of another one, like November’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1. What happens, though, when these two separate concepts cross over into some strange type of sequel-remake hybrid? This is becoming more common than some may realize.

Granted, sequels and remakes are nothing new. The idea of remaking a movie or continuing a series has always been prevalent.

“One of the oldest honors given at the Oscars is the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay,” said Kevin Carr of filmschoolrejects.com. “Popular books, plays and other previously-made films have been mined since the beginning of cinema.”

Although these concepts have existed since the beginning of film, the line between the two separate ideas is becoming very muddled.

21 Jump Street, the 2011 remake of the 1980s television series of the same name starring Johnny Depp, provided audiences with a modern-day comedic take on the undercover cop drama from decades ago. Up until the last 20 minutes or so, that

show, played by Peter DeLuise, appear to help Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s characters catch the bad guy in the last act.

This proves to be both a clever wink to the original series and a debilitating crutch that most remakes seem to carry.

2013’s Evil Dead left some feeling very confused. From the trailers and early buzz surrounding the movie, it looked like moviegoers would be treated to a brand new franchise, filled with shocking special effects, a brand new story, and none of the comedic undertones that made 1981’s The Evil Dead something of a cult classic. When the movie was released, this turned out to be mostly true, except for one short scene at the end of the credits.

A man, shown only from the side at first, quickly turns to face the camera and says one word: Groovy. The man, for anyone who is a fan of the original movie, is Bruce Campbell, famous for playing the character of Ash in the first movie. There is not a need for this. The movie is fine without it.

To make matters worse, since the release of the movie, Sam Raimi, director of The Evil Dead and producer of Evil Dead, has expressed interest in combining the two franchises into one. Because the remake was so profitable, moviegoers can assume Raimi wants to cash in. Brand recognition brings in more money.

decided to sacrifice independence from their source materials for a cheap laugh or lazy joke in past years. Moviegoers can find at least one in any remake. As the credits roll, viewers can not help but feel like the original was just so much better.

If filmmakers did not shove references

to the original down the throats of the moviegoers, maybe the grey area between sequel and remake would disappear and film connoisseurs could go back to deciding for themselves which version is superior.

Just One Day by Gayle Forman

Legions of fans have already started to get their hands on this book after they received Gayle Forman’s 2011 release If I Stay so well. The novel follows Allyson Healey as she takes a post-graduation trip to Europe. On the last day, she goes on a tour and meets a Dutch, vagabond actor named Willem and is immediately infatuated. In an uncharacteristic, impulsive decision, Allyson decides to go to Paris with Willem.

The day that ensues is full of risk and liberation, sure to be a day that transforms Allyson’s life.

This book will bring up a whirlwind of emotion. Gayle Forman wrote a beautifully crafted story of whimsical romance and constant adventure. It is beautiful in a bittersweet and, oftentimes, melancholy way. Readers will find that Just One Day is not shallow and overflowing with passion.

Looking For Alaska by John Green

When most readers think of this outstanding author, they envision The Fault in Our Stars, but unlike that love story, this one is more relatable because it does not deal with terminal illness. The book starts with Miles Halter, who quickly becomes known as “Pudge,” as he leaves his home to attend Culver Creek Preparatory High School in Alabama. Soon after arriving, the adventure begins as Miles finds himself in crazy situations with his new friends, and slowly falling for the beautiful and unpredictable Alaska Young, who teaches him all about how wonderfully scandalous life can be.

“I fell in love with this book instantly,” said senior Kaitlin Krznar. “It was when [John Green] was just starting as an author so it’s really organic.”

Looking for Alaska is a simply satisfying story that deals with tough topics but students will love it because they are all at that point in our lives.

The Gone Series by Michael Grant

The Night Disappeared April Henry

These six novels are a bestselling series centered on a fictional American town called Perdido Beach in which every person that is 15 or older vanishes. The town and surrounding areas are encased within an impenetrable energy barrier and the inhabitants can develop certain supernatural powers. The protagonist, Sam, battles other residents and a malevolent creature called the Darkness with his friends Astrid and Quinn while they explore the area.

“The people who want [these books], want them now,” said librarian Nina O’Daniels.

The idea of these books is a very creative and action packed one. It is an excellent story that reminds me of a modern Lord of the Flies. Expect to be intrigued with this parallel universe.

This mystery thriller is sure to have readers’ hearts pounding as they turn the pages. Gabie blames herself when a co-worker, Kayla, disappears after they trade shifts at a local pizza parlor. To her horror, she learns that Kayla’s fate may have actually been meant for her and becomes obsessed with finding her or any other evidence that leads to a suspect. Gabie teams up with Drew, who also works at the pizza parlor, to prove that Kayla is not dead and find her before she is.

I think teens at West will eagerly devour this book to see if the pieces come together in time to save Kayla. This dark, unsettling, and at times, creepy mystery will be exactly what readers hope for. They will be entranced and at the edge of their seats.

Cringe-worthy movies lyssa

David Lynch is arguably one of the most original, most dissonant filmmakers of all time. Instead of attending a film school, Lynch got his degree in painting from Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Because of this, his films are truly masterpieces. After watching one of his movies, viewers are left feeling uneasy and cannot help but sit in silence as they attempt to process what they have just seen.

There are not any real words to effectively capture Lynch’s style. His films are truly some of the most unique works of art ever seen on screen. One can only describe them as “Lynchian.”

In 1990, David Lynch teamed with Mark Frost (Fantastic Four) to create Twin Peaks, a short-lived but widely successful police drama set in the fictional town of Twin Peaks, Washington. Twin Peaks, one of Lynch’s most Lynchian projects to date, follows FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, played by Lynch favorite Kyle MacLachlan (Portlandia), and Sheriff Harry S. Truman (Michael Ontkean). The series is truly the essence of David Lynch. It is suspenseful, it is eerie, it is strangely comedic, it is Lynchian. Twin Peaks can be found in its entirety on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

The show was recently renewed for a nine-episode third season that will air exclusively on Showtime in 2016, just in time for the show’s 25th anniversary.

People’s opposing opinions and beliefs have a way of shaping how they perceive experiences.

Movies are no exception to this trend, which justifies why all sorts of people undoubtedly bond over widely-known, flat-out bad movies that fail to live up to the promises of their genres.

Sharknado

A romantic shark attack movie that defies logic would normally make for an amazing plot.

However, Sharknado overcomplicates already dramatic scenarios creating an incredibly terrible movie.

The movie circles around a surfer and beach bar owner named Fin Shepard. The irony of Fin’s name and his struggle with a growing, or shall I say raining, shark epidemic may be the only upside to this movie. Like in the opening scene, the movie features numerous unoriginal character dynamics including: bickering between divorced parents, a feud between a father and his daughter’s boyfriend, and an obvious hero emerging who is, of course, a man.

However, for those who are interested in limbs being ripped to shreds and seeing a pathetic girl try to go against her father’s wishes, the movie will appear flawless. The storm brewing creates a flood in the movie’s setting at Santa Monica Pier, but how tornadoes benefit the menacing sharks is a mystery.

“The premise of Sharknado is the worst idea for a movie I’ve ever heard of, because it is scientifically impossible,” said junior David Lung.

Shockingly, Sharknado is in fact a fictitious film. The creators should be applauded for their vivid and colorful imaginations, but should consider focusing on the comedic undertones like those in Sharknado, perhaps without the killer shark twisters.

Sharknado is rated a 3.3 out of 10 on the IMDB website. The alleged horror film lasts only 86 minutes and seems like more of a comedy .

Mean Girls is one of the most quoted movies of all time that explores the dangerous, dog-eat-dog world that is high school. However, its sequel, Mean Girls 2, was sadly nowhere near as catty or outrageous as the original.

This disappointing sequel imitated the storyline of the original, but was not relatable. The movie follows Jo, the new girl, who begins attending North Shore High School somehow already aware of the uniquely famous clique, The Plastics.

Beyond knowing exactly how to get inside The Plastics’ heads, Jo also snags the heart of Tyler, one of the most sought-after guys at school from the start. While Jo was not always on top of the social pyramid, she seemed to have high school down and control over her school in the palm of her hand.

“The movie failed to make a connection to Jo’s personality,” said junior Kara Borgmann. “She just seemed annoyed all the time.”

Perhaps if the unconvincing cast did not try to create very distinct roles, the characters and the storyline would have flowed better together. The movie’s main issue revolved around how Jo’s character development did not gain momentum. Instead, Jo would sporadically shift from the tomboy, to the queen bee, to the nobody and then back to her true tomboy self. Mean Girls 2 is something expected to be found on Disney Channel, trying to focus on the moral of the story: do not randomly become the dictator over a school without the support of anyone higher in the hierarchy and lose all sense of personal identity. The movie’s acting was terrible and was overly dramatic in a futile attempt to get a laugh.

“Mean Girls 2 was a wannabe of Mean Girls,” said Borgmann. “I expected to actually be entertained, and if the lead was more clueless and insecure like actual high school students I think I would have been.”

The truth is it would not be recognized as a trainwreck of a movie if it was not following the successful original. If ever debating whether to watch this sequel, just pop the first Mean Girls into the DVD player and enjoy the movie series at its prime.

SLU basketball coming in hot Sam Nelson | Staff Writer

A new era of men’s college basketball has risen in downtown St.Louis.

For the past three years, the St. Louis University Billikens have made it to the third round of the NCAA championship tournament. The 2012-2013 team holds the most successful record in school history.

In the past two years, the Billikens have won the Atlantic 10 conference in either the regular season or in the conference tournament. With this glowing record preceding them, expectations are running high for SLU in the upcoming season.

“They made it so far into the tournament,” said junior Brandon Reichert.

“They were probably the best team in Missouri last year, better than Mizzou.”

SLU’s five senior starters from the previous season have graduated and six new freshmen have arrived on campus to take their place, so fans can expect a completely different Billikens team this season.

These underclassmen might have a larger role than other freshmen because of the new team chemistry. One freshmen could become an offensive threat, but the effect that the underclassmen will have on the season will depend on the hard work they are putting in now.

“We definitely know we have to learn fast,” said freshman guard Marcus Bartley in an stltoday.com article. “We’re taking in all the information we can.”

The freshman who West’s junior Anderson Johnstone is most excited to see is guard Miles Reynolds.

“[Reynolds will] probably get some good bench minutes and maybe start here and there,” said Johnstone. “He’ll probably be the most exciting player in the freshmen class.”

Offensive output is questionable this season for a defensively-oriented SLU. While the 2013-2014 Billikens were 19 in the country in points allowed (61.9), they were 204 in the nation in points scored (70). And now that the majority of the scoring has graduated, there are some questions over how this young team will be able to produce on the offensive end.

“It’s gonna be shaky,” said Johnstone. “ It’s definitely not gonna be what it was.”

Senior leadership will definitely play a role in the success of the team this year.

Forward Grandy Glaze has always provided energy for the team, hustling up and down the court and grabbing crucial rebounds.

Now, he has taken the freshmen under his wing by teaching them how to maintain a more healthy diet and passing down useful information such as tips for playing better defense. The Billikens’ other senior, center John Manning, will have a lot to prove this year. With little playing time the past three seasons, Manning will most likely start for SLU. If he can stay out of early foul trouble, fans could have something to look forward to. The offensive development of Glaze will also be a factor in this season.

“I look forward to seeing if Grandy Glaze can be an offensive presence,” said AP World History teacher Sean Baldwin.

After 46 Stanley-Cup-less seasons, the St. Louis Blues are back in their 2014-2015 season with a fresh plan and hopes to accomplish the seemingly impossible. Blues fans have a newfound optimism for their beloved team, who have made some positive changes to prepare for this season. Despite the fact that every year is said to be “our year,” this season is looking like it could be just that.

“We’re very deep this year and all around a lot better,” said senior Brendan Patterson. “We picked up good players and are in a lot better shape.”

One key to the Blues’ success this year is picking up 28-year-old center Paul Stastny from the Colorado Avalanche.

Stastny is a hometown kid, having grown up in the St. Louis area. According to espn. com, Stastny is a two-time Olympian with the United States and had 25 goals and 60 points for the Avalanche last season, making him a valuable addition to St. Louis’ roster.

“He’s a really good pickup and good player,” said Patterson. “He’ll get a lot of ice time and be good on the power play.”

The Blues are no strangers to the playoffs, but out of the 38 times they have appeared, they have never been able to make it out hoisting the cup. However, every season, fans come back ready to support their team through thick and thin, claiming that it is sure to be their year to win it all.

The Blues are said to have strengthened their weak spots, making for a more consistent team and opening a door to new opportunities. This year, a stronger offense should lead to more goals being scored, which had been been their Achilles heel last season, especially in the post-season.

“[I expect them] to go further in playoffs and be better on offense,” said senior Wyatt Sloan. “[We have] players coming in to help score and that was our weakest point.”

Aside from the fresh hope fans have for the Blues, it seems that students are just excited for the season to be back after the five-month-too-long break.

“I just love hockey,” said junior Bailey Johnson. “I grew up with it and love the atmosphere. Everyone [at the game] knows about it and wants to be there.”

So even though the question remains if the Blues finally hoist the Stanley Cup 47 seasons in the making, fans at West will be there to watch and support them every step of the way.

Locking eyes with the target, the world around a hunter fades away, leaving only what can be seen down the barrel of a gun exposed.

Isolated in a kingdom of trees, a hunter must remain quiet and still. A prepared huntsman knows the precise location to find his target and the prime area to wait for the chance to take a shot. Game such as deer are often silent and move with caution, making it difficult for a hunter to see the prey.

Once in the woods, a hunter has to learn to read the land around him. Staying vigilant is crucial in this waiting game. An animal can come from anywhere, creating yet another unknown factor in nature’s arena, and leaving a hunter in a potentially hazardous situation if not fully aware of surroundings.

While the beauty of hunting can be captivating, the danger can be all too real, giving hunters the extra push to be right on target.

“You have to be careful,” said sophomore and hunter Jacob Krznar.

“Some of the animals, if close enough, and if angered, could kill you. It’s

For each person, a different reward is given. Whether it is the satisfaction of a job well done, or the taste of deer meat later on, hunting is fulfilling for all who participate in it.

“The adrenaline is crazy,” said senior and hunter Jack Neske. “When you’re hunting, it’s like you get this rush.

You can’t really compare it to anything.”

While hunting is a way to experience wildlife in a new way, it can also be a great experience between hunters themselves.

“It’s a fun bonding experience, and not just the hunting itself,” said Krznar.

Many people believe hunting is a beautiful display of the fragility of life itself, and the beauty that is in each and every day.

Hunters everywhere learn how to push the limits, yet stay within the boundaries. While the goal is different, one is the same for all: the early mornings and up to hours of waiting are all worth it for the perfect kill.

Game Day. These two simple words means so many different things to so many people. To some, they are a reason to cheer on their peers. To others, they are a reminder of a great social outing. But to a select few, these two words mean so much more than any of these; those words are what they live for.

“[Knowing] that you have a [match] later that day can get you pumped for the day,” said senior and varsity golfer Amie Green.

On the morning of a game, many athletes wake up in a better mood than normal because they are excited for the opportunity to participate in the sport they love in only a matter of hours. This feeling of anticipation continues to grow throughout the day as an athlete’s game time approaches.

“It [can be] really hard to stay focused in school because you are always thinking about [your match] later” said senior and varsity tennis player Mackenzie Spaulding.

When the bell rings, thoughts of an athlete’s event flood their minds taking over any previous thoughts.

Their focus completely shifts from school and studies to passes and puts.

“Making sure that you are drinking enough water throughout the day is important to be sure that you can run your best,” said sophomore and junior varsity cross country runner Cameron Myers.

of things they have to make sure they do before or on the day of a game.

“The bus ride [to the match] is the best part of the day because we [can] all get excited and pumped up as a team,” said Spaulding.

On the way to a game, a bond is built between the athlete and team as they spend time together, whether it be listening to music, talking about game strategies, snacking, or even pre-game rituals.

“[Pregaming together] helps you build a stronger bond as a team and become more comfortable with each other,” said sophmore and varsity football player Shawn Woerheide.

The connection that teams form as they prepare for their games can majorly affect their chemistry on and off the field. This is not only considered one of the most memorable parts of high school sports, but is a great way to get one’s mind prepared for competition.

“You’ve got to take it hole by hole, not as [one] whole.” said Green.

The time and effort spent preparing for a game or meet or race is oftentimes more important than that which is put in during the event. If one is not physically, mentally and emotionally prepared, then how could they expect to do well? Next time students see khaki pants paired with the game day jerseys, or hear Mr. Berry announcing a race over the loudspeaker they should think about all of the hard work that these athletes put into it.

Achieving composure is something for which a lot of people strive, but finding a solution to that is not easy.

As it turns out, a good way to keep a body functioning properly is to do yoga.

“[Yoga is about keeping your] mind, body, and soul working together in the way they were supposed to” said senior Morgan Tyler.

Yoga can do a lot for the body.

Doing it regularly can improve strength and muscle tone. Also, it can increase flexibility and balance. Aside from just the physical benefits, yoga is a helpful tool with mental training as well. It can clear the mind and relieve stress.

“It calms me, and it’s peaceful,” said English teacher Rachel Evans. “I just feel good doing it.”

No matter what the goal is, be it internal or external, yoga is a good first step. It does a lot for all at once in not very much time, which makes it very effective.

“Yoga is an all-over body

each and every muscle. Each pose can help you with something different in your body.

There are routines to help you wake up, go to sleep, and even to improve your digestion.”

There are many different routines, or progressions of poses, that all have different effects on the body.

“My favorite pose would have to be kapotasana, or king pigeon pose,” said Tyler. “It’s an intense stretch that opens your chest and hips and relieves every ounce of stress in your body.”

Yoga also has many internal health benefits, such as bettering breathing and giving people a lower risk of cardiac problems like high cholesterol and blood pressure.

It is also proven to better the immune system.

“Before yoga, I dealt with fairly severe depression, and I’ve felt a huge improvement in that,” said Tyler. “My muscle is far more toned and I’m sick far less often.”

Most people could use some stress relief, and an easy way to calm themselves and feel cleansed is engaging in yoga.

Leaping over obstacles Equestrian Rachel Hamrick

Horseback riding is a major commitment; it takes time and hard work.

Like any other competitive sport, it is a big advantage to have some degree of connections and, of course, top-notch equipment. But the price tag on extra lessons and leasing a horse is anything but cheap. Junior Rachel Hamrick demonstrates the passion and work ethic that can be found within riders who are not able to ride the best horses and go to the best competitions but who still fall no less in love with their sport and their animals.

“I love the barn,” said Hamrick. “It just makes me happy.”

Every Saturday morning and every other Thursday evening, Hamrick finds herself at Kennedy Farms.

“[Rachel has loved horses] for as long as I can remember,” said sister Jordan Hamrick.

The first time Hamrick ever rode was on her uncle’s horse. She was afraid, and did not even want to get on. After a lot of encouragement she eventually climbed into the saddle, and it was in that moment that she found her passion.

“I was fascinated,” said Hamrick.“I spent about three years convincing my parents to let me ride and take lessons.”

After her parents finally agreed, Hamrick gave up all of her other extracurriculars and set out to the barn.

Amidst the fear and anticipation of the first lesson, she fell off of the pony she was riding and was dragged halfway across the arena with her foot stuck in the stirrup.

Restrictions on time also make it difficult for Hamrick to get to the barn for lessons. At most, she rides two times a week. Hamrick recognizes the gap this creates between herself and the best riders at her barn.

They also usually have more experience than me. They get to ride four, five times a week.”

Maybe this puts her at a disadvantage skill-wise, but her passion for the sport is still strong.

“I’m so attached to some of the

horses at the barn,” said Hamrick. “I teach them tricks, give them lots of treats, and they also recognize me and like me.”

She has a lot of affection for the animals. She has even taught her favorite horse, Houston, how to hug.

Hamrick has fun developing relationships with the horses, but once she steps into the arena, the atmosphere becomes more serious. Riding is hard work. If a rider wants to get better, he or she has to go the extra mile. Hamrick even spent her summer working camps at the barn to earn lesson credit so that she could ride more.

“I will voluntarily do work without my stirrups and voluntarily make things harder for myself and choose the harder option because I want to get better,” said Hamrick. “I’ll come to the barn early.

I’ll put more time and effort into it. ”

Contact with horses has changed Hamrick for the better, and she admits that nothing else in her life can compete with the feeling of being on a horse.

“It’s taught me self-control [and] people skills,” said Hamrick.”I can’t really apply the same [kind of dedication and passion] to anything. Nothing beats riding. If anyone ever had the opportunity to try it, definitely do because it’s so different from anything else.”

It is not just skill in horseback riding that makes Hamrick unique. It is the strong character that associates her with the population of riders who do not necessarily have the best horses or the best equipment, but have all of the work ethic and all of the heart.

Every drop of sweat, every sore muscle, every extra rep pushes an athlete’s body one step further. But just as athletes condition their bodies, they must also condition their minds. Every time athletes break boundaries, whether it is a few seconds dropped in a race or an amazing play, it is because they pushed past what they thought they could do.

“If you’re not mentally prepared, then you haven’t set yourself up to be successful and you’re not going to end up doing well,” said sophomore and junior varsity cross country runner Ethan Huddleston.

Athletic success can only be perceived visually by an outsider.

Spectators can physically see the effect of training and growth in endurance, muscle strength and skill, but they cannot see inside the athlete’s head. So to some, it may seem as though physical ability is the most important part of being skilled at a sport.

However, high levels of physical fitness could never be reached without focus, determination and positivity.

For some sports, the memorization of techniques and strategies is a big part of competition. Other athletes are completely in the zone come game time. All sports require some degree of mental involvement.

“If you aren’t mentally strong, you can psych yourself out during a game and that will lead to physically playing bad,” said junior and varsity volleyball player Kelly Wilson.

Mental strength is not something that people have inherently. It must be developed. That means a mind must be taken care of just as much as a body.

“[To stay mentally healthy] you have good practices, you eat the right food, [and] you get enough sleep,” said Huddleston.

Being mentally tough does not mean just keeping focus only through good times. When athletes do not perform well they need to be able to bounce back quickly and keep trying. It is important to learn from mistakes. Being too hard on oneself can diminish an athlete’s perspective on talents and affect his or her performance.

“In order to be successful, you need to maintain a positive attitude,” said Wilson. “You need to be able to shake off a mistake when you make one; if you hold onto it, you will continue to make more and more mistakes.”

It can also be beneficial to work on mental health with a group of people who are striving for the same goals.

“Every week [our team has] a meeting where we go over what we did last week, what we accomplished, the goals that we had, [and] the things that we may not have accomplished.” said Huddleston.

A big part of mental health is goalsetting. Determination comes from knowing what athletes want. Strong athletes assess their abilities and set a target to reach.

“You have to look at what motivates you,” said Huddleston. “I set up goals at the beginning of the year for where I want to see myself at the end of the year. I want to see myself improve.”

Spectators praise athletes for what their bodies can do, but many do not think about what goes on in their brains. Where they are strong in body, they are equally strong in mind.

The majority of American teenagers are unaware of both the current events of our ever-changing world and the political power they hold to transform it. When asked what political party Vice President Joe Biden was affiliated with, only about 50 percent of approximately 40 surveyed West students answered “Democrat”, while 30 percent said “Republican.”

Of the same sample, only 22 percent knew that the U.S. was launching airstrikes in Iraq in late September, while 78 percent remained unaware.

In a couple years, all of these students will have the opportunity to vote for America’s future legislators, but most of them will only care whether their pre-decided political party matches that of the candidate’s on the ballot. It is not only important, but a duty for teens to become informed to ensure a more educated and politicallyinvolved society in the future.

2014 has been riddled with prominent events: the Ebola epidemic, the ISIS invasion, marriage equality laws passing, and Ferguson riots.

When they are older and look back, teens should not regret that they did not take part in shaping and knowing the history of their decade. The world transforms so quickly that youths can no longer ignore lives outside of their own - otherwise, they will become overwhelmed and forever wish for a past that cannot be revived.

“Teens should stay up-to-date in politics because we need to have exposure to [it] in order to let us make our own opinions of what we support and don’t support,” said senior Nallu Kannan.

This can cause some liberals to worry because of Ryan’s name recognition as he was Mitt Romney’s running mate in 2012.

“I would like to see Paul Ryan run for the Republicans in the 2016 election,” said Zuccarello. “I enjoy his more conservative, down to earth views.”

Comparing the two candidates, Clinton has much more experience. Ryan has been a Wisconsin state representative since 1999 and the chairman for the House Budget Committee since 2011. He is known for his good looks and love of going to the gym, not his political stances.

With the New Jersey bridge scandal earlier this year, Christie has less of a chance of going far in the election. But with Clinton and Warren both having a cleaner background, the Democrats have a chance to win the race again.

Domestic violence in the NFL More action needed by the league

Controversy is swirling around the National Football League and its recent actions - or lack thereof - concerning players being charged with domestic violence, one of the NFL’s most prominent crimes. According to an analysis of a USA Today database, among the 713 arrests of NFL players from 2000-2014, 85 were related to domestic violence, and since 2006, 34 of the 57 domestic violence incidents went undisciplined.

That all changed February of this year. The Baltimore Ravens’ running back Ray Rice was seen knocking out his then-fiance in a casino elevator during a dispute. He was only suspended for the first two games of the season. Outrage at the NFL’s mild decision grew when a tape depicting the violence of the altercation surfaced. The public demanded a higher punishment, so the NFL quickly backtracked and suspended Rice indefinitely.

“Only suspending him for two days was the wrong thing to do,” said junior Mike Kiely. “They should have suspended him first, instead of after the tape surfaced and people got even angrier.”

A week after Rice made headlines, another top player in the NFL, Adrian Peterson, was accused of striking his 4-year-old son with a tree branch. He was initially allowed to stay on the team.

The majority of this year’s football season has consisted of the NFL doing damage control rather than actually punishing the players for their actions.

Anheuser-Busch is one of their biggest sponsors, and they were outraged that the NFL met these off-field violent crimes with such leniency. More companies should disapprove of these scandals and threaten the NFL’s financial situation so the league will think about the repercussions of their actions before they act.

“The players should receive penalties by the NFL for actions that

they do off the field. If they are not handled well, it makes the NFL look bad,” said freshman Clayton Ivie. “The NFL should take the responsibility to punish players outside of the law.”

While NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell admitted that he “didn’t get it right” and says the NFL will have changes on how they handle cases like these, I do not feel like that is enough.

The players of the NFL are under the public’s microscope and know that all their actions will be judged by the paying viewers, so when I see actions like this taken so lightly, I am appalled.

Fans, including young kids, look to these players as idols and role models to follow.

They see that the players are not taking domestic violence as serious as it is and that it is serious. The NFL is sending the message that it is tolerant of crimes like domestic violence and that is the wrong message to be sending to their viewers.

“The NFL should be worried about their public appearance with situations like this,” said freshman Jordan WIlliams.

The NFL has the power, money, and size to make a difference and get involved in changing some of the problems like domestic violence in society. As a fan of the NFL, I would like to see them represent the league in a better way .

Right now these recent incidents have shown that there is a correlation between football and violence. Instead of allowing this to continue, they could do anti-abuse campaigns and provide public awareness. Instead of pushing violence under the rug, awareness campaigns would help improve their image and send the right message to viewers.

True Disney heroines

So many of Disney’s heroines have sung the praises of staying true to oneself, but few have actually stayed true to the model of a heroine. In the past decade or so, the once-classic princesses have evolved and become stronger leads and role models for young girls.

The focus has shifted from attempts to portray “damsels in distress” to attempts to portray “princesses in shining armor.”

The women in Disney’s last three princessthemed movies, like Merida (Brave), Tiana (The Princess and the Frog), and Rapunzel (Tangled) embody true heroic qualities more so than the older princesses.

[and is] taking steps in the right direction,” said senior Allegra Pierce.

“Princesses like Tiana are different. She wanted a business instead of the man.”

Disney’s first princess, Snow White, could only be awakened from her cursed sleep with a kiss from her true love.

Tiana saved the prince figure of the story, and herself, from their certain froggy fate with her own hard work and charm. Throughout her movie, Tiana is often annoyed by the prince and takes a long time to warm up to him. Her dream of owning a restaurant one day is the main focus on her mind, and it - not the potential of “true love” motivates her to fix the conflict of her story.

“Tiana is a good role model because she works hard for her business,” said senior Reilly Meyer. “She’s independent and doesn’t fall in love until the very end.”

In Tangled, Rapunzel was shut away from the world for the first 18 years of her life, and that innocence could have easily made her a model for the damselin-distress trope. However, Rapunzel ignored that stereotype and rappelled down her tower chasing, again, her own dream instead of the possibility of true love in the dashing thief Flynn Rider.

“Rapunzel was so independent,” said Pierce. “She was emotionally strong. She didn’t need Flynn, but he pushed her to make that jump, and she saved him in the end.”

Rapunzel is a far cry from the likes of Cinderella, who had to wait for her prince to save her, instead of her saving him.

While Disney has hit the snooze

button on its sleeping beauties, it is still guilty of glamorizing even its modern heroines. An article on Theweek.com highlights how, after Merida’s coronation into the official Disney Princess lineup, her hair was tamed, her eyes got bigger, her dress became sparkly, and her stance re-formed into a less powerful one.

In her movie Merida fought against the princess lifestyle, yet in the real world, she was formed into the very thing she hated.

The message of the movie of a solid heroine for today’s young girls contradicts the nowpublic image of that same heroine. Power was traded for glamour in the eyes of the masses.

Boots

In autumn, boots are the perfect combination of practical and stylish. The just-below-knee style keeps legs warm and feet comfortable, and for guys, the ankle style really gives an extra pop to an outfit. Boots are most commonly made with faux leather or suede. They typically come in different tones of brown, but can also be found in tan or black. More and more female students are beginning to pair them with knee-high socks for extra warmth and as an accessory. Boots can be found at most stores that sell footwear including Famous Footwear, DSW, Von Maur, or Macy’s.

Oversized Sweaters

These are perfect for those rainy and chilly days when no one wants to get out of bed. Oversized sweaters add a cozy, yet cute, addition to a simple outfit. They are typically made out of cotton, knit, or blended fabrics. These sweaters are made in a wide variety of fall colors such as forest green, maroon, black, tan, cream, navy blue, and more. For a quick and easy outfit pair, a sweater with leggings, a patterned top and scarf, and boots. They are found at various stores like Old Navy, American Eagle, Target, or Nordstrom.

“They are so comfy and warm,” said junior Ally Arana. “[When I wear them] I just feel like a big baked potato.”

Scarves

Scarves are a simple fix to a bland outfit. They are great for the outdoors when it is chilly, but in general they just add something extra to any outfit. Students can find them in many colors and patterns, from solid black to pink, and even patterns. They can be worn with jeans or leggings, boots, blouses, and cardigans. They typically range from cotton to knit, and knit tends to be used to dress up an outfit. Scarves can be found at most retailers such as Target, Macy’s, Francesca’s, Alter’d State, Nordstrom, or Old Navy.

“It’s an easy accessory to add to any outfit, and they’re really warm,” said senior Hailey Hoisington.

Patterned Socks

Patterned socks are great accessories for both ladies and gentlemen.

They are yet another practical and chic addition to any outfit, and they come in essentially every pattern and color imaginable, from classic argyle to animal shapes to graphic designs. These are great to wear under boots for the ladies and loafers or Vans for the gentlemen. They are most often made with cotton or polyester and can be worn with jeans or khakis, but also look great shown off with shorts on a warmer day. These socks are most easily found at J. Crew, Nordstrom, or Francesca’s.

“They’re comfortable and I like the pattern of them versus regular socks,” said sophomore Devon Houston.

According to theweek.com, Urban Outfitters began covering the front of their tops with the phrase “Eat Less” in June of 2010. This angered many people because it led them to believe that the company was promoting an anorexic lifestyle

In April of 2012, they began carrying yellow childrens’ tee shirts with a design that bore a striking resemblance to the Star of David that people of the Jewish faith were forced to wear during the Holocaust.

The latest outrageous move by the company was a so-called “vintage” Kent State University of Ohio sweater adorned with blood stains and tears. Although the company is defending itself saying that they in no way meant to allude to the Kent State massacre of 1970, it is hard to think there is no correlation between the two events.

While the O’ Fallon Value Village location is somewhat new, the bright neon signs inside are retro and eye-catching. Value Village is a good place to go for people who are on the hunt for unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.

The store has tons of sweaters, tops, jeans, and shoes, as well as books, furniture and music.

Although it may take a bit more searching to find the right item than it would have in another store, sometimes the hunt is worth it to find something special for such an affordable price.

“It is a good place to go for sweaters,” said senior Sarah Rogers. “It’s bigger than Goodwill, and everything is color coded.”

Although most of the items are slightly used, they are all in good shape. The store also sells a few new items and name brands at the front of the store. It is boutique-like in atmosphere and is modern as well as clean. The store has a wide variety of trendy clothes such as flowy harem pants, blazers, outerwear, skirts, dresses, tops, and heels for all occasions and styles.

The store gives cash on the spot for the clothes sold to it that the customer does not want taking up space in their closet any longer.

There is a men’s section in the back with flannels, hats, button-ups and sweaters. Stop by to take a look at some upscale clothing at resale prices.

Transforming homemade facials

A person’s skin can be as unique as their personality. So why settle for products bought in the store that are made for the general skin type? Homemade facials can transform beauty products to bring out skin’s personality. There are so many remedies for every type of skin, whether it is sensitive, dry, or oily.

Sensitive Skin: Sensitive skin is something many people are born with. Signs of sensitivity are redness, dryness or itching.

The best thing to do is not to strip the face of its natural oils. An oatmeal mask is amazing for sensitive skin. Use two teaspoons of plain oats, ½ teaspoon of water, and ½ teaspoon of honey. Mix the ingredients until it has turned into a paste. When it is ready, apply to a clean face and let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes.
