Welcome From The Executive Board Welcome to LexFUN! We are so excited to have you as part of our community and hope you enjoy many of the wonderful benefits that being a member brings.

LexFUN! has been running since 1942.

While times have changed quite a bit in the last 78 years, the need for families to connect and support each other during the early childhood years remains constant.

LexFUN!, formerly known as the Lexington Preschool PTA, was started during a very difficult time in our history - World War II - and we now find ourselves facing another difficult time, this time in the form of a pandemic. While COVID may force us to remain physically distanced for some time, we are fortunate to have so many ways to remain connected whether via Zoom events, socially distanced picnics, or neighborhood scavenger hunts for chalk drawings, yellow balloons, or teddy bears. Young children are incredibly resilient and have a gift of mostly living in the moment. It’s us parents that often shoulder the burden of worry and stress, which is why relying on a community of people going through the same experience is so important.

As parents of little children ourselves, we have been brainstorming ways to offer opportunities for social interaction and fun for our little ones as well as connection for us adults aligned to the latest guidelines for social distancing. We are optimistic that many of our bellowed events will still be possible in this next year, with only minor modifications to ensure everyone’s health and safety.

This family guide is put together each year to provide an overview of member benefits and also a directory of essential information for parents, helping you to navigate your way through the early childhood years by sharing information for local parks, preschools, museums, and more! If you are reading a printed copy of this guide, we strongly encourage you to view our digital version for the most current information as well as a deep dive into the many amazing preschools Lexington has to offer. (Note: a newly expanded version of the preschool section will be published online only after preschools have had time to adjust their offerings based on the governor’s latest guidance).

About LexFUN! A Vibrant Community of Parents with Young Children About:​ LexFUN! is a diverse community of parents with preschool-aged children and younger, and some older, serving the Lexington and surrounding area.

Founded in 1942, LexFUN! is one of the largest volunteer-run parent organizations in Massachusetts providing social, educational and community events and activities.

LexFUN! is a non-profit and a recognized MA PTA. LexFUN! also maintains its own charitable fund, the LexFUND! Community fund, supporting local families in need in times of crisis, granting Preschool Scholarships and other community initiatives.

How long has LexFUN! been around?

LexFUN! was formed in 1942 as the “Lexington Preschool Association.” In 2014, the official name was changed to “Lexington’s Five and Under Network PTA, Inc.” although it still goes by, “LexFUN!”. LexFUN! remains as a unit of the MA PTA but is not affiliated with any public or private preschool.

LexFUN!’s Annual Consignment Sale Every spring, LexFUN! holds its Children’s & Maternity Consignment Sale to raise money for the LexFUND! Community Fund. LexFUND! supports local families in-need by providing monetary donations to assist in times of personal crisis, as well as local preschool scholarships. Meet Friends Drop-in Center ​The Drop-in Center is located at Parish Hall at St. Brigid's Church, 2001 Mass. Ave. It is a great place for kids ages 0-5, with the supervision of their parents/caregivers, to play, socialize, and make new friends. You’ll even find an enclosed baby-zone with foam floor, changing mat and diaper pail, so moms with babies can sit comfortably and engage in floor time with other moms. The Drop-in Center is open most Fridays during the school year from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and is FREE​ to members. Non-members are welcome at a cost of $2 per child, family max $5. ​Access for strollers is through the side door, accessible ramp, towards the front of the building, ring bell for access. The main doors to the Parish Hall at the top of the stairs near to the parking lot. ​Drop-in Center has been an important part of the weekly schedule of so many of our members for many years. COVID-19 restrictions will likely prevent us from holding this offering in its familiar form, but we can’t wait to bring it back even bigger and better than before.

WinterFUN! Crafts with Munroe​ The New Face of WinterFUN! W ​ e are excited to announce our partnership with the Munroe Center for the Arts, in Lexington. This LexFUN! season we are offering two WinterFUN! Craft, Clay & Play dates: in December and February at the Munroe Center for the Arts, 1403 Mass. Ave. Lexington. More details to come!

SummerFUN! ​An easy way to make friends, just show up and play! During summer months toddlers and preschoolers with their parents or caregivers, will meet at a local playground (weather permitting) for outdoor play and arts and crafts. ​FREE​ to members. Non-members welcome at a cost of $2 per child, family max $5.

Playgroups ​Meeting other parents can feel like dating all over again. Let us set you up! Parents and caregivers are provided a list of potential playmates close in age to their own children and offered the opportunity to create a group that meets at the times and dates determined together. Playgroups are a great way to have fun, share ideas, build a support network, make new friends, and socialize. Sign up online at ​lexfun.org/Playgroup-signup​. ​Raising a child takes a village, and social distancing has made the support even more important. We have continued our playgroups by connecting the parents via email and encouraging them to connect via zoom and hold small backyard playdates with their children if desired.

Social Events ​LexFUN! organizes social events where our members can meet, socialize and have fun. Activities include Playground Meet-ups, family gatherings, Family Movie Morning, and, just for the grown-ups, Moms’ Nights Out, Parents’ 16

Nights Out, and more! ​Even during the summer of COVID-19 we found ways to socialize via Mom’s Nights Out at local parks, a Wine Tasting Event, and a Group Fitness class held outside.

Annual Family Events​ Including our annual Member Appreciation Party, Halloween Parade, Patriots Day Parade, Barn Babies live animal event and the Puppet Show.

Even with social distancing restrictions in place we anticipate holding most of these events, in new different ways, as we adjust to our new normal.

Kindergarten Connection​ LexFUN! will ensure that you and your preschooler are kindergarten ready with the Kindergarten Connection program. You will have the opportunity to chat with current Kindergarten parents at your elementary school, obtaining insider tips and tricks for a smooth transition. Your preschooler will even get to meet new classmates before school starts by attending playdates with other children going to the same school! This program is open to all Lexington residents, in partnership with the Lexington Public Schools.

Outdoor Recreation in Lexington Almost 1,300 of Lexington’s 10,000 acres are deemed Conservation Land. Fifty miles of walking trails cross these wetlands, fields and forests offer many opportunities for picnicking, nature study, sledding, and cross country skiing.

For information on ACROSS Lexington, a proposed 40 mile system of hiking and off road biking routes and the inaugural 5.5 mile pilot route, visit www.lexingtonma.gov/across-lexington​.

Trail Walking and Picnicking Battle Road Trail This trail starts at Wood St. and Old Mass. Ave. in Lexington and ends in Concord, providing pedestrian, stroller, handicapped and bicycle access through farmland, natural landscapes and wetlands. The path is part of the Minuteman National Historic Park. Parking lots exist along the trail for those who do not wish to cover the entire 5.5 mile distance.

Belfry Hill This is a quick, pleasant hike, but not stroller-friendly. From Cary Library, cross Clarke St. and leave the town’s bustle behind as you climb stone stairs to the top of Belfry Hill.

Atop this hill stands a replica of the Belfry whose tolling once warned Minutemen of the Redcoats’ arrival. Stop and see the battle panorama at the Visitor’s Center across the road.

Chiesa Farm One of Lexington’s most scenic properties, 23 acres of conservation land, a mile of trails, with an open rolling field visible along Adams St. Access is from Sedge Rd. near Diamond Middle School and from Adams St. Great Meadow After some playtime at Adams Playground (Mass. Ave. and Pleasant St.), cross over the Minuteman bike path to Great Meadow. There are some wonderful hills and trails for hiking, cross country skiing, and nature walking. In the summer, keep your eyes open for blueberries.

Hastings Park Located on Lincoln St., opposite the Hayden Recreation Centre. Band concerts are held Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. during July and August. Visit ​www.lexingtonchamber.org/events for more information. This is also a popular sledding spot.

Landlocked Forest Visitors will find miles of gorgeous and easily navigable trails, providing year-round 26

recreation: hiking, mountain biking, dog walks, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. A wide variety of plant and animal life can also be enjoyed. The main trailhead to the Forest is located on Turning Mill Road in Lexington, under the power lines.

Minuteman Bikeway

Built along an abandoned railroad corridor, the bike path is nearly 11 miles long. It begins near the Alewife MBTA Station in Cambridge, passes through Arlington and Lexington, and ends one mile into Bedford. The bike path can be used for walking with strollers, cycling, rollerblading and cross-country skiing, but can get congested on weekends.

Paint Mine

Forty-eight acres, 2.3 miles of trails, Paint Mine hosts its namesake feature: a natural ochre pigment historically utilized to manufacture paint. Boston Edison's powerline right-of-way makes up a large portion of this property, but the majority of the area consists of woodland with vegetation that is more characteristic of northern New England. A tributary of Simonds or Farley Brook originates here, flowing westerly through a maze of manmade ponds before joining the main channel in Tophet Swamp.

Access trails are from Grove St., Turning Mill Road, Estabrook School's parking area, and Robinson Road.

Parker Meadow

There is a mile of trails near Lexington Center with access to the Minuteman Bikeway. It features a picturesque pond with an open meadow and woodland. Access the area from Minuteman Bikeway, Hancock St., and Revere St. There is a small parking pull-off area on Revere St. that is just east of the bikeway.

Tower Park

Located on Mass. Ave., across from the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum and Library.

Adjacent to the bike path, Tower Park is also a steep sledding hill.

West Farm

Enter on Oak St. The hillside is not only great for sledding, but presents a beautiful view of Wilson Farms and the surrounding area. Don’t forget to visit the cows at the pasture and shed nearby.

Whipple Hill

Enter at Winchester Dr. at the Winchester town line. Providing the highest point in Lexington, the summit offers beautiful vistas of the surrounding countryside. Hike on some of the many trails or enjoy ice skating, fishing, and nature study at Locke Pond.

Willard’s Woods

This 100-acre area is one of the loveliest in town. Park on North St., off of Adams St., and follow the bike path. Diversions for preschoolers include looking for frogs at the pond and watching for snakes and chipmunks along the old stone wall. Or, leave the stroller under a tree and loop through the woods past the ten-foot boulder, and the vernal pool’s muddy residue to the meadow.

Worthen Road to Bridge School

Park at the Center Playground or along Worthen Rd. across from the High School playing fields. The conservation lands south of Worthen Rd. are accessed by two paths, navigable by stroller and tricycle. The western entrance is the start of a Fitness Path, with a boardwalk over wetlands marked by self-directed exercise stations. The second Worthen Rd. entrance, further east, is a paved bike path with some hills. Take the path to its end, then veer left across a picnic area to join the bike path. From here the bike path winds through the woods to the Old Reservoir (Old Res) and Bridge School.

Lexington Community Farm 52 Lowell St., Lexington lexfarm.org​, info@lexfarm.org Lexington Community Farm is a seven-acre working farm owned by the Town of Lexington and run by an independent member-supported non-profit organization (LexFarm). LexFarm grows produce using organic growing methods.

LexFarm runs education programs on the farm for children of all ages and adults in the spring, summer and fall. LexFarm also has a food access program, supplying fresh produce to area food pantries.

Vegetables and flowers are grown for CSA shareholders and are also available for purchase at their farm stand, open to all during the farming season. Organic eggs, cheeses, milk and meats and many pantry items are also available in the farm stand.

Revenues from the farm stand support their education programs.
