A BREATH AWAY

ProjectType: PublicMixed-Use

TargetAudience: ElderlyResidents,YouthResidents

ProjectDate: Oct2023-Feb2023(TemasekPolytechnic)

Location: 1034UpperSerangoonRd,Singapore534797(formerlyknownas”TheTent”)

A Breath Away is a project I did for my Final Year Project in Temasek Polytechnic, and was completed using 3DSMax and Vray.

For this project, we looked at the adaptive reuse of existing, underutilised sites and changing it into one that looked into life post-pandemic. Hence, the project aims to unite youths and elderly that have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. This communitycentric space serves to create a restful space that enables even passers-by to slow down and recharge even in the fast-paced urban landscape surroundings of the site.

This project was awarded the Singapore Interior Design Awards (SIDA) 2023 Best in Public Space Design Youth Category Bronze award, and the DP Project Prize. Award in 2023.

adaptive

The site is situated among a residential area, with the main demographics of established families in the area. In a postpandemic scene, the community spirit of the neighbourhoods have been weakened due to reduced interactions, impacting the youth and elderly the most. Though on 2 ends of an agedemographic, both groups share similarities in issues they’re facing due to reduction of meaningful physical social engagements. Through “A Breath Away”, a community space to reconnect these demographics was formed.

From analysis of the site surroundings, strategies looked at synergising with existing natural surroundings and maximizing the potential of environmental conditions of the site (UN SDG 13) to create an organic breathing space. While aiming to create a sustainable integrated public hub that provides public value to its immediate surroundings through maximising programmatic functions for surrounding residents (UN SDG 11).

Concept: “A Breathing Space”

Creating pockets of fresh air via communal spaces along a meandering path, thus creating opportunities to slow down and pause.

With special consideration of the pace of surrounding spaces and how it can synergise with core activities for a natural “breathing space” that encourages interactions, while slowing passers-by down to create a restful space where they can live in the moment freely.

AWAYadaptive reuse . sustainable goals . community spaces

A community garden and kitchen space has been added in the adaptive reuse of the site. Using various participantdriven activities, gaps between the youth and elderly are bridged, while providing opportunities for individuals to interact with others of their age group as well. The proposed programmes aim to provide mental and physical respite through encouraging social interactions and creating pockets of mindful spaces.

Utilising the existing design elements in the original buildinglike breezeblocks - and translating the idea into different grid patterning and scale throughout the building’s new facades. The new louvres and breezeblocks offer more flexibiliy while maintaining both ventilation and sunlight, thus preserving the existing parts of the building while adapting to better fit the current environment.

THREADSCAPE

ProjectType: Public

TargetAudience: ElderlyResidents

ProjectDate: Aug2023-Nov2023 (LASALLE)

Location: 261WaterlooSt,Waterloo Centre,Singapore180261

Threadscape was a project I completed in Year 2 of Studio in LASALLE. The idea revolving the proejct was to weave in parts of the old and new elements of the site and it’s programmes, represented by the weaving studios and he community garden space. Focussed on the 1st and 2nd floors, Threadscape aims to weave the senior residents of the site that live in the upper floors together to engage in activities both old and new.

The project was comepleted with 3DSMax, Vray and Photoshop.

Takeaways from Site Analysis

Interior QualitiesSurrounding Qualities

From analysis of the site and its surroundings, I found that the elderly prefer to gather around the perimeter of Waterloo Centre, due to the increased circulation and presence of natural environments around the perimeter, qualities which are missing from the interior of the atrium site. The cool material palette and lack of connections to the surrounding natural environment also adds to the gap amongst spaces.

Using participatory arts of textile craft that allow for the elderly to express themselves through craft and gardening, while providing a hands-on activity for them to further engage their senses. The integration of these ‘existing’ and ‘new’ programmes provide a duality of experience of the “2 paths”.

Areas of interweaving programmes in the space are highlighted with voids punctuating the main areas of activity, allowing for consistent views and touch of green spaces while experiencing the hands-on process of crafting within a space, with the arrangement of the voids highlighting certain processes of the craft as well.

THE RED BOX

ProjectType: Public

TargetAudience: Youth,YouthVolunteers

Collaborators: LimWeiXuan,LohXueLi, PranavVijayakumar, SngIgnatius

ProjectDate: Apr2022-Jun2022 (TemasekPolytechnic)

Location: 113SomersetRd,Singapore 238165(TheRedBox)

The Red Box was an industry project that I did in Year 3 in Temasek Polytechnic. It was done as a group of 5. For this project, we worked with the National Youth Council (NYC) to create a space for youths physically experience and gather along the Somerset Belt, and revitalise both Youth Park and The Red Box as part of the “Somerset Belt Master Plan”. The programming and zoning of Youth Park was included in the final proposal as well. I created and edited the diagrams and renders via Photoshop, and modelled some parts of the project in Revit as well (mainly Level 1 & 2).

Youth Park Planning Diagrams

Using the concept of grids, we created unique focal spaces in Red Box with forms skewing towards Somerset Belt to represent the outreaching visions of NYC, as well as their engagement with the youth. The concept was also translated in the zoning of programmes in Youth Park.

The zoning of active to quiret programmes considered the existing Somerset Belt Masterplan, where there were preferences for a programmatic mix to cater to the different preferences of youths.

The eventual form made use of both grids, with the slanted forms taking reference from the Somerset Belt grid, thus carving out varying sizes of the solid spaces. Focal points become accentuated, thus calling focus intto key programmes like the collaborative space and training space for youth volunteers. To call more attention to the entrance, we made use of an inserted volume with contrasting elements to reach out and guide more visitors to Red Box. Shades of red are maintained to compliment the new form while preserving the identity of The Red Box.

DiagramSample Boards - Crafting Unique Spaces

We focused on designing the theme of spaces according to the programmes. Hence, in the sample boards created, we used materials and colours that reflected the theme, like warm colours for social public spaces, and cooler tones for the semi-public formal spaces.

To ensure that the identity of The Red Box was still prominent, red was used consistently throughout the levels through the structural columns and beams, with varying shades and tones that matched the mood and function of different zones within the building.

Level 1 is the most public space and hence, makes use of vibrant colours and open spaces that invites youths to explore The Red Box and discover new horizons through interactions with their peers. Colours of the Somerset Belt Master Plan was also used in the gallery to signify the new beginnings of The Red Box, and reinforcing the importance of the building to its surroundings.

Level 2 hosts mostly semi-public programmes which allow for youths volunteers with common interests to learn together in a more open and interactive conetext. Customised furniture within the spaces allow for inclusitivity in access as it caters to differently abled individuals. The 2 focal spaces - the training and collaborative space - contrasts each other through clear functional, spatial and material definitions.

THE NEST

ProjectType: Educational

TargetAudience: TemasekAviationAcademy Students

ProjectDate: Oct2021-Feb2022 (TemasekPolytechnic)

Location:

31ATampinesAve1, Singapore529768 (TemasekAviationAcademy)

The Nest was a studio project I did as a Year 2 student in Temasek Polytechnic. For this project, we worked with Temasek Aviation Academy (TAA) to bring new life into the existing building to welcome the new era of aviation. Using the concept of Birds in a Tree as a metaphor to how a school environment is akin to birds roosting in trees, the form and texture of the space was redefined to create an all-new school environment for students & staff. The scope of this project covered both Level 3 and 4. The project was completed using Photoshop, Revit and Enscape.

Design Strategies

“Filtering through the Branches”

Material Board

TAA is home to Temasek Polytechnic’s students in different aviation courses, with their lessons spanning over different floors. I wanted to use this design to show that despite the differences in what they’re learning, they are still connected through aviation and within the same building.

Hence, I represented the idea of being under one roof through “Birds in a Tree”, where the students represent birds that flit and jump from one branch to another, while the branches and nests form the classrooms and interactive spaces in between. Thus, the movement and user interaction serves to open communication to facilitate exchange of ideas between students and staff.

THE NESTconnectivity

Thus, in the design of the circulationandvisualpaths, there are voids that open and stagger to forge continuous connectivity through the common areas and allow for students in different courses to interact and peer into each other’s worlds. The rotated geometric form allows for a sense of staggered movement, much like how leaves and branches fiter light in a tree.

Visual Connectivity throughout all Levels

The common areas serve to act as a social hub, thus utilising nest-like structures to create depressed seating that gathers students into a common space. Use of skewed geometry and ceiling elements branch out and guides students towards different classrooms, with the metal strip of the staircases slanting and reinforcing the idea of semi-enclosure via the tree branches. Use of wood and metal creates a sense of connection to the concept, while breathing new life into the aviation academy.
