EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Shane Tippett

The leadership team at Lewis Ginter is as varied as you think it might be, given all the diverse things the Garden does to connect people through plants for the benefit of RVA. I am privileged to serve alongside remarkable individuals who support and inspire our teams in thoughtful and passionate ways. One has shepherded a balanced budget a dozen straight years; another works to welcome and embrace our guests however they come - a mom with a stroller on a quiet, misty morning, or a thousand people an hour on the busiest day. Every now and again, one of my colleagues will recognize a road not yet taken, and inspire us all to embark on a new adventure. For nearly 14 years Director of Education Every now and again, one of my Randee Humphrey has been responsible colleagues will recognize a road not yet for the Garden’s programs that provide taken, and inspire us all to embark on “experiential education for everyone.” a new adventure. Last year’s “by the numbers” alone are impressive: 274 adult programs reached 6,600 participants. 787 formal youth programs reached another 16,000 adults and children. Busy as this is, Randee has always been on fire to take the Garden’s mission on the road, out into the broader community. She was the Garden’s inspiration and leader for the Beautiful RVA initiatives. She created the position of Community Engagement Coordinator, and staffed it with the redoubtable Duron Chavis, who has successfully led two cohorts of Ginter Urban Gardeners. Intelligent and articulate, quiet and enabling, Randee leads an expert and dedicated staff, whom she will miss when she steps down in May from her role as Director of Education. Perhaps less than one might guess for such a collegial person, because she returns to the Garden in the fall to continue part-time with Duron empowering community engagement initiatives. This brilliant “re-wiring” of her career embodies what it means to be a true servant leader, and on the road the Garden now travels, it is an honor to have her continue as our traveling companion.

ORIGAMI HIGHLIGHTS

ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN

April 13 – September 30

• 16 vignettes featuring 21 sculptures

Daily 9 am – 5 pm; and extended hours during June - August Included with Garden Admission

• some sculptures are over 7 feet tall; others are small as a mouse

A premier art exhibit of origami bronze, steel and aluminum sculptures makes its midAtlantic debut at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden this spring and summer. Origami in the Garden is an exhibition of larger-than-life outdoor sculpture inspired by the art of paper folding. Santa Fe artist Kevin Box collaborates with his wife, Jennifer Box and origami masters Robert J. Lang, Te Jui Fu, Michael G. LaFosse and Richard L. Alexander to celebrate the art of origami in museum quality sculpture and educational programming.

• forms are cast in bronze, steel and aluminum

• all are based on prototypes created with origami: one folded sheet of paper, no cuts • artist Kevin Box creates these using a unique process he developed in order to capture the delicate details of paper in museum-quality metals using the lost wax technique • installed throughout the Garden with many associated activities and programs • celebrates nature, the “master origami artist,” seen in everything from leaves unfurling to butterflies emerging from a chrysalis • visit the Garden’s Library to explore four unfolded wall hangings displayed with the four corresponding folded origami pieces

“ Origami presents a simple metaphor: When we begin with a blank page, what we do with it is up to us and the possibilities are endless.” — Kevin Box, Sculptor

GES: HL, 21, elective

Course includes lecture, lab, and field practicum. Pre-requisites: Intermediate Botany or instructor permission. $231 / $192 member. 3 sessions = 21 hrs. GES: HL, 21, elective Grasses, Sedges, and Rushes Tuesday, Wednesday, August 7, 8, 9 am – 5 pm Identification of grasses, sedges, and rushes is often perceived as one of the most difficult activities in the realm of botany, due to the fact that grasses, sedges, and rushes are usually small, narrow-leaved plants with unassuming, diminutive flowers – and they all look alike! This course is for the disgruntled multitudes who would like to gain a better understanding of grass, sedge, and rush terminology, classification, nomenclature, and most importantly, identification. Those already proficient in plant identification will find this course to be a useful refresher. Emphasis is on native or naturalized species in Virginia, and the use of dichotomous keys in technical plant manuals and regional floras. $154 / $128 member. 2 sessions = 14 hrs. GES: HL, 14, elective

We’ll explain

A butterfly alone can create an exquisite painting, but when added to a botanical work it not only enhances the image, it can also inform the viewer of the role the butterfly plays in some of the intricate interdependencies of nature. $478 / $426 member. 4 sessions = 24 hrs.
