Year 6 re-enact the Battle of Bosworth

History was brought to life for Year 6 this term, as we re-enacted the Battle of Bosworth. Three armies joined the battle field but there was only one victor- the new Henry VII! Children demonstrated their battle techniques including the Swiss Manoeuvre- watch out for pikemen!

EYFS & Infants Infant and EYFS Forest School We went to Forest School on 31st January and it was the first time that we had been to our new Forest school site. Plashett Wood was beautiful with its rich diversity of flora and fauna and we soon felt very relaxed and at home. The weather was thankfully on our side and we managed to stay dry and enjoy our morning of activities.

On arrival we had a quick explore and then got down to the important task of a hot chocolate, biscuit and chat around the fire circle.

We decided that lighting a fire and toasting marshmallows was essential to any successful morning in the woods, so we set about getting one lit. All of the children had a go at lighting their own mini fires using fire steels to make sparks and cotton wool as fuel. We talked about fire safety and the fire triangle as we worked.

EYFS & Infants Infant and EYFS Forest School continued..

Another activity on offer was making bird feeders using string and Cheerios. This activity encouraged us to use our fine motor skills whilst talking about birds that are native to our woodland and how they cope in the winter.

Finally, we made fairy dens using materials that we found on the woodland floor. This activity allowed us to work together in groups and there was a lot of chatter about how our dens were going to look and what the fairies might need to keep warm and dry. It is always wonderful to see the children’s imagination at work!

The morning flew by and we arrived back at Morley House covered in mud and full of exciting tales about our adventures. We look forward to our next visit on March 13th Mrs Swan

EYFS & Infants Family Breakfast

On 24th January children from Pre-Reception to Year 2 were all joined for breakfast at school by a special friend or relative. Our visitors looked at our work and met our friends and teachers before gathering in the hall to listen to the children sing “You raise me up�

It was such a lovely occasion that we have decided to extend this to older classes.

Year 1 Africa Topic For our topic about Africa Year One had a special visitor. Charlotte Homewood, Jamie’s mum, came into talk about the work she does for the African charity ‘Life in Abundance.’ The children had lots of questions about life in Africa and how her charity helps them. She also gave each of the children a wooden angel handcrafted by women in Kenya as a gift from the charity.

Year 2

Pilates Year 2 demonstrated fantastic balance skills and teamwork in their Pilates sessions with Mrs Russell. The children were able to focus their minds, balance on one leg and pass and catch a ball with their partner. There was some brilliant multitasking going on!

Year 3 Trip to Brighton Museum by Florence Perris 3ZL I loved my school trip to Brighton Museum. First of all we learnt how to mummify a pharaoh!

We were split into groups (each with their own pharaoh!) to clean the bodies and say prayers.

The second thing was to take the brain out (that was disgusting). Then we took out all the organs and put them in Canopic jars. One of mummifiers would wrap up the heart. After that, they took the heart to the god Anubis and placed it on one side of the scales. Maat, the god of Truth placed a feather on the other side of the scales. If the heart was heavier than the feather it would get thrown to the Great Devourer and get eaten. But if the heart was lighter than the feather then it would get kept and the pharaoh would get into the afterlife.

In the Egyptian room of the museum we looked at Shabtis and Hieroglyphics, mummies, pots and all sorts of old rickety stuff. Everything was very old and rusty because they were made thousands and thousands and thousands of years ago. It was quite amazing to think how long ago these things were made.

Year 4 Forest School Year 4 have thoroughly enjoyed our time at Forest School despite the rain and mud.

We have had fun building dens to keep dry and learned how to light a campfire in the rain. We have also made plenty of hot chocolate and soup to keep us warm! We have even written Haiku poems about our experiences.

Year 5 Visit to St John Sub Castro Church by Josh Ferguson 5AR On Friday, we went to St John Sub Castro Church, in Lewes.

First, we got into groups and Mrs Powell was my group leader. Our first activity was to search for a -Raffaella Bonaldi chain, an anchor, a tree stump, a rope and the letters RHS. I enjoyed hunting for them but we didn't find the rope.

Next, we looked at a monument for Magnus. Magnus was a Danish Prince who was an anchorite who lived in a cell connected to the church by a doorway. An anchorite is someone that was bricked in to a small room and there were three holes. One hole he used for the toilet, one hole he got food and water from and the last hole people spoke into.

Then we looked at the Finnish War Memorial. The Finnish soldiers were captured by the British and French in Crimean War and brought to the Old Naval Prison in Lewes. However, the prison was quite nice because they got fed properly. Some of them were ill with TB and died, but some of them were in a different part and they made toys for little children when they visited.

After that, we did some activities inside. My favourite was making our own creatures.

Finally, we walked back to school. I had a really fun time at St John Sub Castro and I would like to visit it again.

Year 6 Learning CPR

The Year 6’s spent an afternoon celebrating ‘Restart a heart day’. The aim was to teach CPR to school children. It is so important to learn CPR and I have seen first-hand how much of a difference it can make in the community. We will do a refresher session later this year.

I am very proud of how enthusiastic and committed the Year 6s were to helping people. Well done!

E Safety Parents Meeting This week we had our annual E safety meeting with parents, this time based around the theme of Screen Time. Do our children spend too long on screens? What are the benefits of screens and what are the dangers? We spent time exploring these complex issues and discussed ways of controlling screen time and developing an open dialogue with children, in order for them to better understand the risks and wider issues. Spring Term Sport Rugby LOGS played their first rugby fixture of the season a rugby 7s tournament at Brighton College, against Brambeltye St. Andrews and BC. The other schools looked strong in the warm up. LOGS won all three games 5 tries to 1. 7-0 and 6-1.

An outstanding result!

Logs looked the strongest team throughout with great individual performances from Sam Campbell-Brown and Harry Bagley-Wild. The whole team played very well with hard tackles from the whole squad setting the tone for all the games and various solo runs from the break down.

Team: Harry, Oliver, Sam, Josh, Thomas, Will, Wilfie, Lewes, Oli, George Girls Football At the girls’ football tournament, the girls were a force to be reckoned with. They drew their first game 0-0 against Cottesmore A team and although nervous at the start the girls settled down.

Out of the 6 Great Walstead teams our girls beat 5 of them, 4-0. 3-0. 1-0. 2-0. 4-0. The only team who were able to beat us were the Great Walstead A team by only 2 goals.

Save of the game went to Pippa who skilfully managed to save a goal between her legs. Well done. With one loss, one draw and seven wins, LOGS were second over all.

Team: Pippa, Skylar, Sophia, Kitty, Florence, Eden and Cecily.

Swimming Lewes entered South Downs Area cluster swimming gala on Friday. There were 13 races in total,10 individual and 3 relays.

LOGS won five of the individual races and two of the relays, finishing second in four of the other individual races and second in the other relay.

It was a great display of swimming and LOGS had a very strong team. Some great races meant we were the run away winners of the gala.

Netball Year 5 and 6 played an inter-year netball tournament at the end of January. There was a total of 4 teams all run by a team captain who oversaw the rotating of the positions and warming the team up. All the girls were thoroughly engaged in the tournament and professional. The tournament gave the girls experience of changing positions as well as match practice. Eden Bell was the girl of the game for her consistency and Lauren Morris most improved player with her amazing shots in goal.

Spring Term Sport 2 Boys Hockey LOGS boys went up to the Olympic stadium on Thursday to play in the National ISA Hockey championships. We went up in high spirts and in the warm up looked to have a very strong squad.

LOGS drew their first game 0-0. In the second game they just lost 2-1 despite a great goal from Oliver Jones. The boys struggled to get up to their usual match pace and qualified for the plate tournament rather than the cup.

We all came home disappointed having not placed in our event, but more determined to do better in the next fixture. The whole event was live streamed and it was exciting for classmates at school to be able to watch some of the live action.

Team: Thomas, Harry, Wlfie, Luke, Will, Hugh, Reuben, Flynn, Louis, Noah, Oliver Mixed Hockey Logs entered the South Regional mixed hockey final on Friday, which was held at the Crystal Palace national stadium. LOGS fielded a strong team.

We were in strong pool with defending champions Westwood Prep. Lewes came out top in the pool winning 6 games on the bounce with one 0-0 draw.

LOGS only conceded one goal in the pool stages against a strong Westwood side but scored twice against them with strong performances from Thomas and Skylar, both scoring great individual goals.

LOGS went into the semi-finals in poll position and won easily which meant they played Westwood yet again in the final. Once again it was a tight game but Lewes came out on top winning 1-0 in the dying seconds, Thomas and Skylar cutting though midfield with quick passes before slipping the ball to Wilfie for a tap in on the far post.

Our team only conceded one goal in the whole tournament in the opening game. LOGS also had the three top goal scorers of the tournament, doubling all the other teams totals, with Thomas scoring 3, Wilfie 5 and Skylar 7. Player of the tournament was impossible to split between these three players.

Music It’s been another exciting term for music at Morley House. With the arrival of the drum kit, kindly donated by Mr Rowe, and the Cajons and djembes all generously funded by the FOL parents, the children have been able to get really hands on with rhythm. We have loved exploring different drum grooves in our lessons together.

This term we also started a ukulele group and a rock band.

Barbican, De Montfort and Malling have been secretly meeting to rehearse a song for our house singing competition this term. Each house went all out on their performances - with actions and props to really put on the greatest show for our guest judge – Head of Music from the Senior School, Mr Casterton!

The choir have been hard at work, fine-tuning their existing repertoire this term in preparation for their next performance which will be on Thursday 13th March at the Fish Aid Concert at the senior school. More information to follow after the half term.
