We may not be responsible for the world that created our minds, but we can take responsibility for the mind with which we create our world.

THE TIDE THAT BINDS
Harakeke: A plant at the heart of Māori weaving. Cherished and cultivated in special plantations like estuarys. Extracted and processed for their inner fibre known to Māori as muka.
Governered by tikanga - for Māori, harvesting this plant is no careless undertaking.
Particular and specific diagonal cuts are made away from the harakeke and always from top to bottom to prevent rainwater flooding the plants heart and dying.
The ceremonial reverence Maori have for cultivating and weaving this plant is the conceptual link between environmental research and the architectural solution at the South Brighton Estuary.
Located in South Brighton - Christchurch, this conceptual project explores the development of a research centre for environmental scientists.
The brief requires three buildings each with different typology requirements to be met; four accomodation pods, a communal shared space and a research facilitily.
The diagonal gable roof form of the buildings take inspiration from cutting methods of the harakeke plant. Intentional and careful cuts Māori undertake to prevent flooding the harakeke take shape in sheltering forms that bind together making reference to the plants

North West Aspect
This is a design studio project for a 7m cube home located on the west end of Central Christchurch. Adjacent botanic gardens serve as the conceptual impetus for this urban cube .
The brief requirement was for a manual hand drawn design consisting of 2 beds + artist studio for a young family of three.
The established trees of Hagley Park and Christchurch Botanic Gardens are the architectural link to the orthoganal form. Window transoms and mullions aim to appear as if they are leaf veins - in an effort to feel encapsulated in a tree canopy rather than a square box.
