Leventhorpe a business and enterprise academy Additional Information 2022 - 2023

I hope you find this additional information interesting and helpful. It should be used in conjunction with our full prospectus and will give you a glimpse of what makes Leventhorpe such a special place to learn and work. This is truly an environment where every child is valued and cared for and in which they are constantly challenged to develop into young people capable of making a real difference to the world.

Respect: Caring about each other and appreciating individuality

Students

Welcome to Leventhorpe

Evening is an opportunity for you to experience what we do for yourself. Our staff and students are incredibly proud of their school, and I know they will be delighted to talk to you and answer questions as you tour the Malcolmsite.

1 2

The school has expanded over recent years and this has been accompanied by an extensive capital works programme to develop our site. These works were completed in September 2021 and have enabled the school to meet more of the demand we have for places in both the main school and sixth

Excellence: Growing to be the best you can be

Develop a learning environment where students become independent in a climate of creativity, innovation and challenge

Provide students with the opportunities, support and challenge to grow as individuals and to become successful young citizens Staff

Facilities and systems

Together we provide the care and opportunities for all to learn, grow, excel and face challenge with confidence

This year saw our students perform superbly in their summer exams, achieving another set of fantastic GCSE results. 30.7% of all entries were at grades 7-9 (old A*-A). In English, 87% of our students achieved at least a grade 4 (equivalent to an old grade C) and 78% achieved grade 5, with 84% of students gaining at least a grade 4 and 66% securing grade 5 in Maths. In addition, 83% of students gained two grade 4s or above in Science. The most pleasing aspect of our results was that 10% of our students achieved two grades above their target across all of their entries. This means that a student expected to get 9 grade 4’s based on their primary school results achieved 9 grade 6’s. These results represent significant achievement for our students of all abilities across the full range of subjects.

Our Vision

Our Strategies

Staff, parents and students work together to create a community based on secure, shared values of Excellence, Commitment and Respect. These values are at the heart of everything we do here at Leventhorpe and inform all aspects of the school, from the individual curriculum that enables all students to achieve the highest possible academic standards, to the outstanding pastoral system that ensures that the needs of each student are met fully.

Parents

Our Values

White Headteacher

We are all immensely proud of the work we are doing at Leventhorpe at such an exciting time. We have been recognised nationally as a high performing school for a number of years now and we were rated as “outstanding” in all categories in our last Ofsted Inspection. The school has also been designated as a centre for School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT), acting as the lead school for teacher training across local primary and secondary schools.

Commitment: Taking opportunities and being passionate about learning

In the sixth form 49% of grades were gained at A* - B or equivalent. 16 students achieved the equivalent of at least 3 A grades or better in their courses with many of our students gaining places at top universities or on higher apprenticeship schemes.

Your son/daughter may be applying to both Leventhorpe and either The Bishop’s Stortford High School or The Hertfordshire & Essex High School under the musical aptitude criterion, but he/she will only sit one test which will be arranged at one of the schools. The test will take place during the morning on Saturday 8th October. You will be advised of the venue of the test for your child in due course.

If you have any queries or difficulties, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Ayers at the school during school hours:

a) Secondary Transfer Form

Applicants will be asked to listen to the questions on a CD, the running time of which is approximately thirty-five minutes. Parents are, however, advised to allow an hour overall for the test’s completion.

An electronic Supplementary Information Form (SIF) can be completed via the Admissions page on the school website: https://www.leventhorpe.net/89/ year-7-admissions. If you are unable to complete an on-line form, please contact Mrs Ayers at the school on 01279 603171. Whilst no previous musical experience is required in order to take the test, it is expected that applicants wishing to apply under this criterion have an interest in music and would intend to participate fully in the musical life of the school.

Appeals against decisions should be made directly to the Independent Appeals Panel.

Two forms must be completed in order for the Governing Body to assess your application properly.

APPLICATIONS

b) Leventhorpe Supplementary Information Form

1. Children looked after and children who were previously looked after, including those who appear (to the admission authority) to have been in state care outside of England, and ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted, or became subject to a child arrangement order1 or a special guardianship order2. Children previously looked after abroad and subsequently adopted will be prioritised under criterion 1 if the child’s previously looked after status and adoption is confirmed by Hertfordshire’s “Virtual School”.

7. Students who can demonstrate a proven aptitude in music - this will be determined on the basis of an aptitude test. Priority will be given to those with the highest scores in this test. Parents should apply for their child to take the test on Leventhorpe’s Supplementary Information Form and submit the on-line form to the school by 4pm on Friday 30th September 2022.

In the event of a tie-break being required under criterion 7 then places will be allocated using criteria 1 – 6 in order. Should less than 10% of places be allocated under criterion 7 then any remaining places will be allocated using criteria 1 – 6.

3. Children of all staff who are directly employed by the Rivers Multi Academy Trust who have worked at Leventhorpe School for two or more years or where the member of staff was or will be recruited to fill a post for which there is a skills shortage. The staff member must be the child’s legal parent (by blood, adoption or step-parent) and have been living at the same address as the child for a minimum of 2 years.

(a) At least 222 allocations will be made using the following six criteria in the order set out below:

5. Children who reside permanently within the parishes of Gilston and Eastwick.

9 10

2. Children who, at the closing date for applications, have a sibling currently attending Leventhorpe.

Leventhorpe provides education for both boys and girls from age 11 to 18, with the expectation that most parents will be seeking a continuous schoolbased education for their children throughout this period. The number to be admitted to Year 7 in September 2023 is 240. The school is a successful Business and Enterprise Academy and the lead school for School Centred Initial Teacher Training within the Bishop’s Stortford Educational Trust (BSET). It has been recognised by the DfE as a “High Performing Specialist School” and by Ofsted as “Outstanding” in each individual category judged, as well as “Outstanding” in overall effectiveness (2012).

You should apply under more than one criterion if you can.

There are two forms that must be completed when applying for a place at Leventhorpe in order for your application to be assessed correctly. These are:

is oversubscribed, after the admission of pupils with an Education, Health and Care Plan where the school is named in the Plan, priority for admission will be given to those children who meet the criteria set out below, in order:

Admission Arrangements for Entry to Year 7 in September 2023

Year 7 Admission to Leventhorpe

(ii) Leventhorpe’s Supplementary Information Form: This is an electronic on-line form which can be accessed via the school’s website. It should be completed and received by the school no later than 31st October 2022 and by 4pm on Friday 30th September 2022 if you wish your child to be considered under criterion 7 (Music Aptitude). If a Supplementary Information Form is not completed the governing body will apply their admission arrangements using the information submitted on the Local Authority Form only, which may result in your application being given a lower priority.

September 2023

Leventhorpe’s motto is “Excellence, Commitment and Respect” and these qualities, combined with a creative and innovative teaching environment, form the school’s ethos. Parents applying for a place for their child are expected to support the school’s ethos and aims in matters of work, discipline, extra -curricular activities and uniform.

6. Should there be places unfilled after applying criterion 5, then places will be offered on the basis of shortest straight-line distance between permanent residence to the school as determined by Hertfordshire County Council, with those living closer being accorded a higher priority. Addresses are routinely checked and places may be withdrawn if a false address has been given.

(b) After applying (a) above, up to 18 places will be allocated from all of the applications remaining using criterion 7 below:

If there are more applications for admission than places available at Leventhorpe, the governing body will allocate places over which it has discretion, in each case by applying the seven criteria set out in this

In the event of being oversubscribed within any criterion then selection will be determined by applying criterion 6 (distance).

(i) Local Authority Form: The form you should complete depends on where you live. No application for a place at Leventhorpe will be accepted unless an application is submitted to the relevant Local Authority by the date specified.

4. Children who, at the closing date for applications, attend one of the following priority primary schools: Hatfield Heath, High Wych, Little Hallingbury, Mandeville, Reedings, Sheering, Spellbrook, St Andrews (Much Hadham).

• Children who are the subject of a direction by a local authority to admit or who are allocated to a school in accordance with an In-Year Fair Access Protocol may be admitted over the planned admission number and may take precedence over others on the Continuing Interest List.

At secondary transfer Leventhorpe will admit over the school’s published admission number when a single twin/multiple birth child is allocated a place at the school. Random allocation will be used as a tie-break in criteria 1 - 6 above to decide who has highest priority for admission if the distance between two children’s homes and the school is the same. This process will be independently verified. The governing body will normally only consider one application for admission to the school for a student in any one academic year. In a case where circumstances relevant to the application have substantially altered the governors may, at their discretion, consider a further application within the school year.

Change of Address

Criterion 7

• You only have the right to appeal if you have been refused a place upon application. Parents wishing to appeal who applied through Hertfordshire’s online system should log into their online application and click on the link “register an appeal”. Out of county residents and paper applicants should call the Customer Service Centre on 0300 123 4043 to request their registration details and log in to www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/ schoolappeals and click on the link “log into the appeals system”.

Year 7 Admission to Leventhorpe September 2023

Failure to gain a place at Leventhorpe

• 240 places will be offered by applying the admissions arrangements. If you fail to gain a place at Leventhorpe, your Local Authority should offer you a place at a different school.

Explanatory Notes and Definitions for the Admission Arrangements for Leventhorpe School 2023/2024

• It is the responsibility of parents to contact the school to state their continued interest at the start of each academic year.

• Whether or not you accept such a place, you can ask to be placed on the Continuing Interest List of Leventhorpe. If a place at Leventhorpe becomes vacant during the year, the school will offer it to someone from the Continuing Interest List, in strict accordance with the admission arrangements. As the year progresses, the Continuing Interest List may include people who have just moved into the area and want a place for their child. They will have the same status as others on the list and,

Make sure that you submit your Leventhorpe Supplementary Information

Schools are allowed to offer up to 10% of their total number of places to those who can demonstrate a proven aptitude in certain subjects. Leventhorpe will offer up to 18 such places on the basis of proven aptitude in music. This will be determined by a musical aptitude test, the date and time of which will be notified to parents who indicate a wish for their child to be considered under this criterion. Students will need to achieve a certain minimum score in this test in order to be considered under this criterion.

Parents/carers may seek a secondary school place for their child outside of their normal age group. This will have been previously discussed with the primary school that the child attends. To enable the school to advise as to whether your application to Leventhorpe in the preferred year group will be accepted, parents must provide the school with evidence as to why the original request to be educated outside of the chronological year group was made. The school should be in receipt of this information by 30th September 2022 so that the request can be processed and a decision can be communicated to parents before the main admissions deadline of 31st October 2022. The governing body is ultimately responsible for making this decision for applications made to Leventhorpe. Accepted applications will be processed as part of the main admissions round, unless the parental request is made too late for this to be possible, and using the admissions criteria (17) above. There is no guarantee that an application will be accepted. If the application is not accepted this does not constitute a refusal of a place and there is no right to an independent statutory appeal.
