When Edmund, the child star of Germania Anno Zero, walks along Voßstrasse to sell faded relics to the American soldiers who are visiting the ruined building of the new Reich Chancellery in the summer of 1948, the area around Potsdamer Platz, though still recognizable, is invaded by debris caused by the destruction of Allied bombing. All shots and tracking shots that Roberto Rossellini filmed around the German capital are packed with these materials: ruins and rubble. Almost forty years later, Cassiel, one of the angels from Der Himmel über Berlin

by Wim Wenders, accompanies the elderly poet who is unsuccessfully looking for Potsdamer Platz, and walks across an empty and overgrown lot, crossed only by the notorious wall—whose first lines had been drawn right on this ground—and an elevated road.

What happened to the debris and the ruins of Berlin in the forty years that separate the two films? Where is Potsdamer Platz? Could any traces of the lost capital be hidden somewhere? Would it be possible that the pieces and fragments of the ruins might have provided, in spite of themselves, a new face to the current geography of Berlin? These questions and the story of the German mountains of debris, known as Trummerberge, provided the starting point for the research project “Ruins, rubble and debris of the theaters of war: the problems of decontamination and disposal to the configuration of new landscapes,” carried out by the research unit of the IUAV Architecture, Archaeology, landscape: theaters of war. The first results of such research will only be available in a year. Meanwhile, in this short essay I will try to connect the threads of a story—which is already partially known—to explain the architectural interest of the topic.

Both the film about the debris in Berlin and the one about its abandoned and empty spaces, despite the time span that divides them, are shot in icy black and white, denouncing the dramatic state of suspension in which the German capital lived for a long

Quasi quarant’anni dopo, Cassiel, uno degli angeli de il Cielo sopra Berlino di Wim Wenders, accompagnando l’anziano poeta che cerca, invano, Potsdamer Platz, attraversa un terreno vuoto e incolto su cui scorrono solo il fatidico muro—che proprio qui vide tirata la sua prima linea a terra—e una sopraelevata.

Dove sono finiti i detriti e le rovine di Berlino nei quarant’anni che separano i due film?

Dove è finita Potsdamer Platz? È possibile che da qualche parte esistano tracce della capitale scomparsa? Che pezzi e frammenti di quelle rovine abbiano fornito, loro malgrado, un volto nuovo alla odierna geografia berlinese? Da queste domande e dalla vicenda delle montagne di detriti tedesche, le cosiddette Trummerberge, prende spunto la ricerca “Rovine, detriti e macerie dei teatri di guerra: dai problemi di decontaminazione e smaltimento alla configurazione di nuovi paesaggi,” in cui da pochi mesi è impegnata l’unità di ricerca dello IUAV Architettura, Archeologia, paesaggi: teatri di guerra. I primi esiti di tale ricerca saranno disponibili solo tra un anno. Intanto, in questo breve saggio si vuole provare a riconnettere i fili di una vicenda, in parte anche nota, per spiegare l’interesse architettonico del tema.

Tanto il film delle macerie di Berlino quanto quello dei suoi vuoti abbandonati, nonostante l’intervallo di tempo che li divide, sono girati in un algido bianco e nero che denuncia il drammatico stato di sospensione in cui per tanto tempo ha vissuto la capitale tedesca per il trauma dello smarrimento della 75

Therefore, the current location is the result of different options: some of the hills rise in flat agricultural areas and have been turned into public parks after that the transfer to landfill had profoundly changed their profile— as in the case of Volkspak Prenzelauer berg before 1969—called Oderbruchkippe, and of Dorferblick berg, south of the district of Neukölln, whose name immediately recalls a new condition for the look of the adjacent landscape, since from this 86 meters high hill you can enjoy the view of some of the Branderburg villages. Other hills are located inside nineteenth-century public parks and their story has a lot to do with the desire to remove some of the buildings which had been built to represent Hitler’s yearning for power.

Some of these hills are also on the border of the notorious wall and bind in a tangible way the transition of Berlin from a city marked by the defeat to its new condition of hostage—this is the case of Rudower hohe and Dorferblick berg—while others are settled in the public parks of the former East Berlin, Humboldthöhe to Humboldthain, Mont Klamott (with the large and the small mountain of bunkers) in the park of Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg. Three other mountains of rubble rise around Tempelhof Airport: Insulaner berg, and Marienhöhe to southwest, Rixdorfer Höhe in the Hansenheide park to northeast. The presence of these hills in some of the very central districts of East Berlin contradicts the assertion according to which these dumps of stone bricks and concrete iron glass can be attributed to the condition of isolation from the territory of Brandenburg, in which West Berlin lived since 1961. At the time of construction of the wall, in fact, each sector of Berlin had already seen the rise of these artificial hills, which is a further indication that this was a deliberate choice dictated by the emergency and that these hills were placed in a context of urban redevelopment aimed to outline a new Imago Urbis made of a different monumentality than the Hitler’s dream translated in Berlin through the 80

L’attuale localizzazione quindi è il frutto di diverse opzioni: alcune sorgono in corrispondenza di piatte aree agricole e sono state trasformate in parchi pubblici dopo che la loro destinazione a discarica ne aveva profondamente modificato il profilo— è il caso del Volkspak Prenzelauer berg prima del 1969—denominato Oderbruchkippe, e del Dorferblick berg a sud del quartiere di Neukölln, il cui nome evoca immediatamente una nuova condizione per lo sguardo sul paesaggio limitrofo, poiché da questa collina alta 86 metri è possibile godere del panorama su alcuni villaggi branderburghesi; altre ancora sorgono all’interno di parchi pubblici ottocenteschi e la loro vicenda ha molto a che fare con la volontà di cancellare alcuni degli edifici partoriti dalla volontà di potenza della Germania hitleriana. Alcune di queste colline sorgono poi sul bordo del fatidico muro e legano in modo tangibile il trapasso di Berlino da città segnata dalla sconfitta a città ostaggio—è il caso di Rudower hohe e Dorferblick berg—mentre altre si insediano nei parchi pubblici della ex Berlino est, Humboldthöhe a Humboldthain, Mont Klamott (con la grande e la piccola montagna del bunker) nel parco di Friedrichshain, e la stessa Prenzlauer Berg. Altre tre montagne di detriti sorgono intorno all’aeroporto di Tempelhof: Insulaner berg e Marienhöhe a sud ovest, Rixdorfer höhe a nord est nel parco di Hansenheide. La presenza di tali colline anche nei centralissimi quartieri di Berlino est smentisce l’affermazione per cui queste discariche di pietre mattoni vetro ferro e cemento siano da attribuire alla condizione d’isolamento rispetto al territorio del Brandeburgo in cui visse Berlino ovest dal 1961.

All’epoca della edificazione del muro, infatti, ciascun settore di Berlino aveva già visto sorgere questi rilievi artificiali. Segno ulteriore che si trattò di una scelta precisa dettata dalla emergenza e che a parte il caso del Tiergarten—in cui pure fu stoccata nei primi anni

Spring, a feeling that was shared with people all around Czechoslovakia.

Jetelová decided to avoid the institutional cultural system to work in the streets, in the countryside between Poland and ex-Czechoslovakia. A reflection on domain, limit and boundaries was present in installation such as “Marking by Smoke,” realized in 1983-84, when the artist built some wooden huts in the countryside out of Prague and she burnt them spreading clouds of an intense red colour. Another example is the series of sculptures with the shape of big chairs that remind easily of a throne and its ideology of domination. The artist installed these works of art both in the landscape and in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague in 1981 (“Herabsteingender Sthul”-“Descendig Chair”).

The atmosphere of social oppression in those years caused an emigration flow from the East to the West. Magdalena Jetelová was one of the people who decided to move away, and she went to West Germany in 1985. This forced migration deeply influenced her personal life and her carrier. The theme of borders, in their territorial and political understanding, and the issue of delocalization, formed her strong poetic feeling.

This is clearly evident in the works she realized at the beginning of the 90s.

In “Domestication of a Pyramid,” which was exhibited in Wien, Berlin, Prague and Dublin between 1991-1994, she invades the museums’ spaces with a hill of red soil covering works of art and architectural elements.

In 1996 in Barcelona with the installation “Dislocation” for the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) the artist selected and removed some tiles of the façade of the building designed by Richard Meier and she installed the pieces in different urban spaces, hanged them to a tree in the Ramblas or placed them on damaged buildings or even made them float on the water.

The meaning of borders is thus investigated through these actions of displacement, of de-territorialization. The artist extracts

I temi della dominazione, del limite e del confine vengono espressi in istallazioni quali “Marking by Smoking” del 1983-84, in cui l’artista costruisce delle strutture in legno, simili a capanne, nelle regioni periferiche di Praga per poi bruciarle, diffondendo così nell’aria un fumo dalla forte colorazione rossastra; o la serie di sculture dalla forma di grandi sedie fuori scala, facilmente assimilabili all’immagine di un trono e alla sua ideologia di dominazione, che vengono installate sia nel paesaggio che, nel 1981, nel Museo di Arti Decorative di Praga (“Herabsteingender Sthul”-“Descendig Chair”).

Il forte clima di oppressione sociale genera in quegli anni una grande ondata di emigrazione della popolazione verso Ovest e anche Magdalena Jetelová si sente costretta a spostarsi in Germania Occidentale nel 1985.

Questa migrazione forzata lascia un segno profondo nella sua vita personale e nella sua carriera. I temi del confine, nella sua accezione territoriale e politica, e della de-localizzazione entrano prepotentemente a fare parte della sua poetica. Questo si legge chiaramente nelle opere della prima metà degli anni Novanta. In “Domestication of a Piramid,” allestita a Vienna, Berlino, Praga e Dublino, tra il 1991 e il 1994, una massa di terra rossa invade gli spazi dei musei e delle gallerie, sotterrando parte dell’architettura che la ospita. Nel 1996 a Barcellona con l’opera “Dislocation” per il Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) l’artista campiona e rimuove alcune parti della facciata del museo, progettato da Richard Meier, e le distribuisce in diversi spazi urbani, appendendoli a edifici evanescenti, incastrandoli tra gli alberi di una Ramblas o addirittura facendoli galleggiare sull’acqua.

the direction opposite to musealization, thus making them available to use.20 Probably the most emblematic example within this context, also due to its wide international involvement, is represented by the architecture competition announced by the District of Lorient (Morbihan) under the aegis of UIA (International Union of Architects), with a view to investigating the potential scenarios of reuse of the submarine basis built by the Nazis in Keroman. The basis consists of three buildings, with twenty-one alveoli aimed at accommodating the submarines and a total surface equal to 60,623 square metres, which, since the post-war period, have represented an embarrassing as well as cumbersome presence along the water front of the city. A presence that some enlightened administrators have been able to see also as a special resource available to citizens.21 The competition envisioned three prizes and six mentions, and nine groups stood out of the 192 participants. Very different visions emerged, which adopt specific techniques and strategies in order to improve the whole area destined to become – as the competition required – a touristic and natural park. The design plans all aim at contrasting, up to the point of eliminating, the invasive and conflicting dimension of the massive military structure, 352

Probabilmente il caso più emblematico in tal senso, anche per l’ampio coinvolgimento internazionale, è costituito dal concorso di architettura, bandito dal Distretto di Lorient (Morbihan) sotto l’egida della UIA (Unione Internazionale degli Architetti), con lo scopo di sondare i possibili scenari di riuso della base sottomarina costruita dai nazisti a Keroman. Si tratta di tre edifici, per un totale di ventuno alveoli destinati ad accogliere i sottomarini e una superficie complessiva di 60.623 mq, che dal dopoguerra hanno rappresentato un’imbarazzante quanto ingombrante presenza lungo il water front della città. Una presenza che alcuni illuminati amministratori hanno saputo vedere anche come risorsa spaziale a disposizione della cittadinanza.21 Tre premi e sei menzioni, in tutto sono nove i gruppi che si distinguono tra i 192 partecipanti al concorso. Ne emergono visioni molto diverse tra loro che mettono in campo tecniche e strategie specifiche per riqualificare l’intera area destinata, come richiesto nel bando, a parco turistico e naturale. Tutti gli sforzi progettuali sono diretti a contrastare, fino ad eliminarle, la dimensione invasiva e quella conflittuale dell’immensa struttura bellica che con la sua mole ciclopica occupa un ruolo centrale nell’impianto del

The projects are all characterized by great audacity, as they intervene in a significant way on the submarine basis, with expansions and demolitions which aim at opening the area both towards the seafront and towards the inland, in order to give continuity to the urban park required by the announcement. Most interventions seem to have taken into due consideration the physical features of what already existed.

Indeed, the planning and special choices apparently are driven by an active dialogue with the existing structures, a negotiation made of addictions, subtractions, or alterations, which are sometimes quite remarkable. In this sense, it is surely the most significant and profitable case of reuse, which, however, has never been actually realized, and it has not even managed to affect either the practice or the theoretical speculation connected to reuse and salvage interventions of difficult heritages.22 The case of Dora I, one of the two submarine bases in the port of Trodnheim in Norway, is somehow similar. Dora I started being built by the Germans in 1940, together with Dora II,23 which was never finished, and Dora III, which was never even started, and it was the victim of a lack of urban policies connected to the salvage of the port. Dora

In questo senso, sicuramente il caso più significativo e proficuo di recupero non museale di un patrimonio bellico che però, purtroppo, è rimasto solo sulla carta senza neppure riuscire, inspiegabilmente, a incidere né sulla prassi né sulla speculazione teorica relativa agli interventi di riuso e recupero dei patrimoni difficili.22 Per certi versi analogo è il caso di un’altra base sottomarina, una delle due presenti nel porto di Trodnheim in Norvegia, Dora I. Realizzata dai tedeschi a partire dal 1940, insieme alla mai completata Dora II23 e a Dora III, mai neppure iniziata, la base è stata ostaggio di una sostanziale mancanza di politiche urbane relative al recupero del porto.
