In its most recent survey of college pricing, the College Board reports that a "moderate" college budget for an in-state public college for the 2016–2017 academic year averaged $24,610. A moderate budget at a private college averaged $49,320.

This Talk will feature experts Sheila Zaft (Summit View School) and Dr. Julie Morris (Santa Monica College, formerly of UCLA) and will be moderated by Elizabeth C. Hamblet (Columbia University), who will discuss the unique issues and challenges faced by students with learning differences as they attempt to navigate the college admissions 'maze.'

Neurodiversity may be the last “frontier” of talent management, but in many ways the biggest challenge." Dr. Ann Simun, neuropsychologist, will offer an insightful exploration of neurodiversity and whether colleges need to follow business industry's lead and consider neurodiversity as the next diversity "frontier" as they evolve admissions best practices.

The journey to prepare children with learning differences for the transition to college is one that can be bittersweet for parents. However, the journey is made easier by appropriate planning. Kevin J. Tyrrell is the parent of two college students: his daughter, a Senior dual enrolled as an undergraduate in a small local private liberal arts college and as a first-year graduate student at a local graduate university, and; his son, enrolled as a Sophomore in a small Academy program within a large private four-year research university. In this thoughtful discussion, Kevin will offer anecdotes and share specific tools and strategies that he developed that were invaluable to his family as they prepared for this critically important transition.

Additionally, Kevin will share insights about what specific factors were taken into consideration when weighing which college setting was the right 'fit' for each child.

SESSION 3C - ON THE PATH TO SELF-DETERMINATION: ENCOURAGING AND SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD'S EMERGING INDEPENDENCE Jessica L. Romeyn, Psy.D., Educational and Clinical Consultant

According to Psychology Today, in an article (12/5/16) entitled "The 'Failure to Launch' Epidemic," "Failure-to-launch is the collective name for the difficulties so many young people today are having in assuming the self-sufficiency and responsibilities of adulthood, and it is a rapidly growing problem." Dr. Jessica Romeyn's groundbreaking work with adolescents and young adults includes work with families that explores the "what's next?" Understanding your child's needs and abilities, evaluating appropriate settings that support those abilities, and once your child is in the appropriate setting, ensuring that her/his self-advocacy skills are shored up are all critically important to encouraging and supporting your child's emerging independence. Please join Dr. Romeyn for this thoughtful and reassuring talk, in which you will gain insights about how to strike an appropriate balance between supporting your child and encouraging your child's emerging independence.

Myths about college disability services and accommodations can leave students without the critical knowledge they need. Thinking that colleges don’t offer anything may discourage from attending college and believing that colleges provide every service that students had in high school might not properly prepare students for the transition. Laws and expectations at the college level are different, but with the proper preparation and understanding, students can be successful! Learn what really happens at college, and what skills students need to do well in this exciting new environment.

Often students and their parents come to college not knowing quite what to expect for available services and accommodations. While the process is not the same as getting an IEP or a 504 Plan in middle or high school, it is a manageable process which can help students get the accommodations they need and learn to become successful selfadvocates both in college and beyond. Join us as we look at some of the difficulties and successes students face in moving on to higher education.

This session will explore briefly some of the steps that should be taken to ensure that the post-secondary educational aspirations of students with a Learning Difference are kept alive. Building off of her experience in litigating and mediating various cases across southern California, Ms. Casillas will examine some frequent pitfalls that both parents and students should be aware of as they prepare for the most critical phase of the student's educational career (for those who are college-bound) - high school.

IMPROVING ACCESS FOR SCHOLARS WITH LEARNING DIFFERENCES (ANOTHER LOOK AT INCLUSION AND EQUITY) Gabriella Tempestoso, M.A., Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Director of Academic Support Services | Pitzer College

As the Associate Dean of Students and the Director of Academic Support Services at Pitzer College, Gabriella Tempestoso works closely with students, faculty, and staff to ensure that the institution is living up to its mission of social justice particularly in the areas of access and support services. Specifically, Ms. Tempestoso is focused on moving Pitzer College from the medical model of disability services towards a broader social justice model that focuses on access and diversity rather than deficiency. Gabriella states, “My career has been founded on the commitment to increase student success at every level, particularly for traditionally underrepresented populations. I am a hands-on leader and find a great deal of satisfaction in providing a holistic approach to student support, including academic advising, coaching, and advocacy so that students may reach their educational goals.” In this powerful discussion, Dean Tempestoso will deepen our understanding of inclusion and equity and discuss how the conversation needs to change in order to improve college access for scholars with learning differences.

Dyslexic writer Jonathan Mooney did not learn to read until he was 12 years old. Despite his early struggles, Mooney went on to graduate from Brown University, where he received an honors degree in English Literature. Mooney has established himself as one of the foremost leaders in LD/ADHD, disabilities, and alternative education through his activism and published works. Jonathan is also a celebrated speaker on cognitive and physical diversity and has lectured in 43 states and three countries.

HOW UNDERSTANDING BRAIN DEVELOPMENT CAN HELP GUIDE THE TRANSITION TO COLLEGE Dr. Karen Wilson, Ph.D., Clinical Neuropsychologist | West LA Neuropsychology PC

Contrary to what many believe, the brain is not fully finished developing until approximately age 25. Therefore, during emerging adulthood, the developmental transition between adolescence and adulthood, the brain is still doing some “finetuning,” particularly in those areas associated with executive functioning. In this session, Dr. Karen Wilson, neuropsychologist, will identify areas of vulnerability for emerging adults with histories of AD/HD and other learning challenges, discuss the relationship between executive functioning, risk-taking and changes in mood during this period, and help attendees gain insights into how to support adolescents and young adults as they work to organize their lives, manage their impulses, and achieve success.

The purpose of this session is to: 1. Explore the processes and work of people who support the PSE transition 2. Explore the perceptions and experiences of PSE Disability Resources and Services (DRS) providers who onboard new students

with disabilities 3. Discover what is working well locally (LA and Orange County sites) and what is not happening or working poorly 4. Discover ways to strengthen student’s readiness (self-knowledge, self-efficacy, awareness of PSE’s DRS operations, services and supports).

This session for parents and caregivers will focus on a developmental approach to creating goals and teaching self-determination and self-advocacy designed to move students toward the goal of post-secondary education and training. Students not automatically learn and apply this at school; working towards these goals gradually will increase the student’s success at the next levels. Parents and caregivers will learn how developmental processes impact what and how these goals are implemented. Additionally, this presentation will discuss how the six components of self-regulation (time management, motivation, methods of learning, monitoring performance, physical and social environment) can be addressed in order to enhance academic achievement.

Executive functioning, which refers to the ability to apply specific abilities to problem-solving and ultimately to the achievement of goals, continues to develop as adolescents’ transition from high school to college. In this session, Clinical Neuropsychologist, Dr. Karen Wilson, will describe executive functioning and highlight aspects of executive functioning that are critical for success in high school and college. She will also discuss the relationship between executive functioning, risk-taking and changes in mood. Attendees will gain insights into various executive functions and learn how to support adolescents as they develop the skills needed for adulthood.

This presentation highlights the aspects of online teaching that catapults student achievement in a blended learning environment. Classrooms traditionally have one teacher per ~25 students using a whiteboard to teach all students in their classroom.
