Northern Cup

WELCOME NORTHERN CUP 2014 is a very important year for netball in Wales. It not only culminates in the INF World Championships Qualifiers but we have the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games in the Summer.

It’s really important that the girls are peaking at the right time and a good programme of warm-up matches is very important in trying to deliver the highest placing possible, especially as for the majority of them this will be the only opportunity.

Wales hosts the Netball Europe WQC Championships, which take place at the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff from 30th May to 1st June. That will be a second important element in the preparation process for the players as well as for Melissa Hyndman and her management team. The format also enables the Wales A players to gain valuable experience.

On behalf of the Board I’d like to thank the Welsh Netball staff and the many volunteers – those on the bench, umpiring and helping out at the two venues – for their hard work in putting the programme together and making everything happen, as well as Sport Wales for hosting us.

There has been fantastic support for the event across the netballing community and there should be a terrific atmosphere at the games.

We hope you enjoy them.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES Wales are currently ranked 8th in the INF World Rankings, a ranking raised following success at the Six Nations Championship in Singapore in 2010, the World Championships, also July 2011, a three-test series held in Scotland in December 2011, a tri-test series in the Cook Islands (October 2012), and, most recently, their gold medal win at the Netball Europe Open Championships in May/June 2013.

This success has guaranteed their place at the Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow in July 2014.
