ON THE RISE From the Vikings down to the youth, 2023 has the makings of an epic season

As summer turns to fall and we open the 2023 football season there is much to be excited about and build on from 2022 at all levels of football throughout the state of Minnesota.

Coming of a 13-4 regular season and NFC North division title, our beloved Minnesota Vikings have an opportunity to establish themselves as an Elite team in the NFL. Last season this team proved resilient by winning a decade’s worth of close games in one season, not to mention some of the most improbable victories of all time.

Who can forget the 4th and 19 catch by star wide-receiver Justin Jefferson against the Buffalo Bills? How about the greatest comeback in NFL history against the Indianapolis Colts? Can you believe Greg Joseph hit a 61-yard field goal to beat the New York Giants on Christmas Eve? Anyone who has lived and died following the Minnesota Vikings know they typically are on the other side of these types of history-making outcomes. There is great reason for optimism this season with our team in purple. Kirk Cousins’ star will shine much brighter this season as his all-access appearance on the Netflix series “Quarterback” has earned him a newfound respect by his teammates and fans. Gone are some popular and familiar faces like Adam Thielen, Eric Kendricks, Patrick Peterson and Dalvin Cook. However the Vikings were active in free agency, drafted some young talent and hired a bonified Defensive Coordinator in Brian Flores.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell and General Manger Kwesi Adofo-Mensah seem to be on the same page, have a plan, and ultimately give our faithful fans hope that they will finally bring us back to the promised land. For those sharing this optimism the Super Bowl is Sunday, February 11, 2024 in Las Vegas.

At the major college level, the Minnesota Golden Gophers are coming off a 9-4 season which was capped with a Pinstripe Bowl 28-20 victory over Syracuse, the 6th straight bowl win and 5th under head coach PJ Fleck. Last season we saw the Gophers bring home Paul Bunyan’s Ax by beating Wisconsin for the third time in five years. They still need to find a way to beat Iowa, but they were the better team in a heartbreaking 13-10 loss at Huntington Bank Stadium.

The preseason talk is that the Gophers have the second most difficult schedule in the country. Whether that is true or not, these Fleck-led Gophers have rowed the boat to national relevance. Losing Mohamed Ibriham to graduation potentially closes the chapter on a dominant run game, but with the emergence of young gunslinger Athan Kaliakmanis it is time for the Gophers to air it out more. With the return of Chris Autman-Bell leading a young WR core, and huge TE targets in Brevan Spann-Ford and Nick Kallerup the offense should be the most dynamic since the 2019 season. Defensive Coordinator Joe Rossi continues to impress as the Gopher’s defensive group seems to improve each year. With North Carolina and the return of Michigan and Ohio State on the schedule, seven or more wins will equal success for the maroon and gold.

ters their 3rd year of FCS Division 1 football and they come in as defending champions of the Patriot League following an impressive 10-1 season going undefeated (8-0) in the regular season. As they continue to establish themselves at FCS D-1 they will be welcoming boundary rivals South Dakota this season, Northern Iowa in 2024, and perennial FCS powerhouse North Dakota State to their schedule in 2025. Following how the UST football program evolves and competes is rare in today’s age of sports and should capture the interest and excitement of any Minnesota football fan.

In NCAA Division 2 football Minnesota State-Mankato and Bemidji State are ranked in the preseason top 25 according to Versus Sports on-line rankings. The Mavericks are ranked 10th and the Beavers 23rd as both teams come off 10-3 2022 season campaigns.

In small college football the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference always provides excitement and intrigue. Last year St. John’s University and Bethel University split their series with Bethel winning the regular season match-up, and St. John’s gaining revenge with a win in the MIAC Championship game. Both teams advanced to the NCAA Division 3 playoffs as well.

St. John’s comes into 2023 ranked 6th in the nation according to D3football. com. They open the season against No. 4-ranked Trinity, Texas followed by a trip to No. 11 Wisconsin-Whitewater in Week 2. Bethel is ranked 14th and open against No. 5 Warburg College of Iowa, who is coming off a trip to the NCAA Division 3 final four last season.

Bethel and St. John’s play week three in Collegeville. Augsburg, Gustavus Adolphus, Carleton, and Concordia (Moorhead) also have hopes of contending for the MIAC crown this year.

There are no scholarships awarded to Division 3 football players, but the level gives many Minnesota football players an opportunity to play competitive football beyond high school.

Then there is the Friday Night Lights of the Minnesota high school football season. Though players from public or private schools in large and small communities come and go from season to season the sights, smells, and atmosphere that surrounds high school football stadiums in the fall never graduates. There is an abundance of talented high school football players ready to don their team’s jerseys this season with one goal in mind — play for a championship at U.S. Bank Stadium in the Prep Bowl. The Minnesota State High School League crowns seven champi-

ons over a two-day football bonanza at the home of the Minnesota Vikings.

Last year’s champions Maple Grove (AAAAAA), Elk River (AAAAA), Simley (AAAA), New London-Spicer (AAA), Barnesville (AA), Minneota (A), and Mountain Iron-Buhl (9-man) all have opportunity to defend their title this season. Those in attendance last December are still talking about the Hail-Mary play that won it for New London-Spicer at the Prep Bowl last year. What we promote through Let’s Play Football are the camaraderie and the stories made playing Minnesota high school football that are discussed for generations.

At the youth level in Minnesota the Midwest Premier Football League (MPFL) which we discuss in this issue has given the football loving youth

player opportunities to play football more than just in the designated season offered by their local association.

Football is a physically demanding sport that makes it difficult to consider playing year-round like other sports, but the MPFL showcases throughout the year finally takes the sport out of the back seat behind hockey, soccer, baseball etc., for those youngsters who love football the most. Pride Sports Leagues in the metro area as well as Minnesota Youth Athletic Services (MYAS) are other avenues available to football loving youth.

Make no mistake, football is on the rise in Minnesota with opportunities we have not seen in this state for years. We are on the cusp of an epic season. Now, Minnesota, Let’s Play Football!

Top of the Class:

Roman Voss looks to build off exceptional freshman season

Roman Voss finished the 2022 season with 2,335 total yards for the Jackson County Central Huskies.

Roman Voss is a young standout quarterback who had an exceptional 2022 season as a freshman for the Jackson County Central Huskies. Last season, he accumulated 2,335 total offensive yards with 26 total touchdowns.

The young star threw for 1486 and ran for 769 yards. Voss led his team to a season record of (12-1), a Section 3AA championship, and a Class 2A semifinal game appearance.

“Coming from my 8th-grade year and having that loss in the section finals and then saying we were going to be 13-1 and going to the Bank, I would have said maybe. I mean, you always hope for that,” said Voss. “But doing that, the entire year was so fun. We had so much fun the entire time, there wasn’t a game or practice I didn’t want to go to.”

The Huskies doubled their opponents, averaging 29.2 points per game and only allowing 12.5. Voss put on huge performances leading his team to dominating victories throughout the season. In week three, he had six completions for 118 yards, two touchdowns, and a receiving touchdown against Blue Earth Area. After his dominant freshman campaign, he was named the No. 1 overall player in the C/O 2026 in Minnesota per Prep Redzone Minnesota.

“Yea that was crazy. I was at lunch with all my buddies and then Prep Redzone Oliver West DM’d me and said congrats. I was like what the heck that’s crazy,” said Voss. “It was just a wild feeling. I texted my dad and my brother.

It was unbelievable, it didn’t feel real.

That was definitely awesome.”

As he enters his sophomore season, he stands at 6 feet and 4 inches tall and 205 lbs. With his physical stature, big arm and his mobility, this young man’s ceiling is looking very high. Voss has shown he has elite talent and the potential to be a Power Five recruit. The humble small-town kid goes to a school with 288 enrollment and 4,000 people in the town.

In 2021, Voss began his varsity reign as an 8th grader as the starting quarterback for the Huskies. In the season opener against Maple River, he beat out several upperclassmen for the starting job. Despite Voss’s age, he doesn’t shy away from competition no matter the age gap from his peers. As the starting quarterback, Voss led the Huskies

to a season record of (7-4) and a Section 3AA Championship game appearance where they unfortunately suffered a (34-28) loss. He finished the season with 1036 passing yards and 147 rushing yards with a total of 6 touchdowns.

“My 7th grade year I was going to play JV but then COVID hit so I didn’t do that,” Voss added. “So, then we just played four games with our middle school, scrimmaging each other. So, I didn’t really know the playbook or anything. I went to maybe two of the games because you couldn’t really go.

Then next year, I got to learn everything. It was wild. Our first game we played three different quarterbacks and then our second game I was named the starter and it’s like holy crap this is for real. They told me you’re not coming out of this game, you’re going to be the guy no matter what the stakes are. We won that game at home. It was a really great feeling. We had a pretty good rest of that season, we should have won the section but we just couldn’t come down with it.”

Voss is an accurate quarterback who throws with precision along with having a strong arm. He throws well in the short, quick passing game and has the arm strength to challenge defenses downfield. His strong build makes him tough to sack or tackle.

You can tell he’s ahead of the game for his age. The big guy can also be a problem for defenses with his feet.

Don’t let his big frame fool you, he can take off while shedding off a tackle or two and has the talent to be a traditional pocket or true dual-threat quarterback.

He could easily be molded into a style like Trey Lance or Cam Newton. If nothing’s there, he is not afraid to take off and pick up 20 yards or more.

“When I was younger, you obviously didn’t throw a lot,” Voss said.

“I’ve always been a runner, so this year I set in the grounds telling everybody I’m a runner and not scared of contact at all. I’d say that’s my biggest thing, I’m kind of tough I’d say. If I get hit hard, I’m going to get right back up.”

He’s a pure athlete. He can also be an asset in other places on the field.

He occasionally makes plays as a wide receiver, typically mossing defensive backs. Voss also played defense occasionally as a safety, having a few interceptions. Statistically, his play is through the roof regardless of his age.

The three-sport athlete has also gained attention on the basketball court after King of The Courts, a social media platform that mostly showcases SouthEastern Minnesota high school talent, posted a TikTok showcasing his highlights from this past season. The post went viral, racking up over 30,000 views. Voss averaged 20 points a game while helping his team to a 15-10 season and a Subsection 3AA South Semifinal game appearance. The prospect put on several stellar performances, like scoring 26 points against Montevideo in week 7. His hard work did not go unnoticed as Prep Hoops named him Freshman All-State AA First Team with only seven other players.

Like football, Voss was brought up to varsity early on and became an effective player.

“Eighth grade year I started, and we had a pretty good team,” said Voss.

“We probably had a 500 season, we lost in the second round of playoffs. This year I kind of took it over. I averaged like 20 points. I love basketball, it’s really fun.”

Showing out on the field is no secret to JCC when it comes to the name Voss. Roman’s older brother Rudy was a legendary quarterback for JCC, putting up insane numbers. Over his career,

he achieved 4,537 passing yards and 49 touchdowns, which are both school records. He led the Huskies to a Prep Bowl Class 3A championship game appearance and was selected to play in the Minnesota All-Star Game in 2019. On the court, he was also a standout player. He holds the school record for career points, assists, and three-pointers, and averaged nearly 30 points per game during his senior season. He achieved all of these while being an honor roll student. From 2020-2023 he played for South Dakota State University as a preferred walk-on who would later earn a scholarship. In the 2022-2023 season, the Jackrabbits won the FCS championship before Rudy retired from playing football due to back injuries.

“He’s my biggest fan. He wants me to break all of his records and he’s so supportive of me,” said Voss. “He trains us three days a week out at our place. We kind of have a weight shed and all the football guys come over and get like 20 guys to come out and he’s the one running it. He went to SDSU so he’s seen a weight program like that. He texts me before every single game. My dad always jokes and says that he wants me to win a state championship more than I do. That’s just because he’s my biggest supporter and I love him.”

Together, the Voss brothers have helped Jackson County Central become a section runner-up in 2018 and 2021 and make state appearances in 2019 and 2022. Rudy has been a vital resource to the team as a strength and conditioning coach. With the culture changing with the help of some alumni and community spirit, the future is bright for Jackson County Central Football.

“Now we’re having this mental coach from SDSU coming down and it’s like a lot of things are changing so fast,” Voss said. “Little things like raising money, we just bought a jug machine and we’re getting new practice jerseys and stuff like that. Our team is just so much closer than ever before.

Looking forward to the season, we have 5-6 seniors, not a lot at all, but they’re really good seniors. These next three seasons are going to be so fun to look forward to.”

Simley Spartans taken to new heights

Chris Mensen has quickly turned Simley into an elite football school.

When it comes to turning a culture around, Simley High School Head Coach Chris Mensen has just the components to do so. Since taking over in 2019, Coach Mensen has taken the Spartans to new heights.

Based on the history of Simley high school athletics, they have been predominantly known as a wrestling school. However, after a few recent trips to state the tournament, Mensen has quickly changed Spartan football’s narrative from mediocre to a standard of excellence.

“We preach the importance of accountability and trust in everything we do and work extremely hard to build a culture of family within our program,” said Mensen. “Above all, we are trying to develop quality young men who will be successful in their lives outside of football. I believe the life lessons you learn as a member of this team will carry with you in future endeavors.”

In the past four years as head coach, Mensen’s ability to create a new culture has helped him post a career record of 33-9, and the team reached the state tournament each season. Mensen has coached in the Simley football program for the past 12 years, spending eight seasons as the offensive coordinator and the past four as head coach. Before becoming the program-changing head coach, Mensen became a student of the game, learning from Simleys previous head coach – his good friend and mentor, Rex King.

“He instilled the importance of toughness and brotherhood in our team and I carried on many of his teachings when I took over,” Mensen said. “As an assistant, I was able to coach many different positions and learn the game of football in a manner that I never did as a player. This helped to grow my knowledge and love for the game.”

Last year, Mensen created a buzz within the community with a certain philosophy of being held accountable for your effort, which sparked a new culture for Spartan football that has only scratched the surface. With a sense of a new beginning, the Spartan community had a new strut with the number of youth exceeding numbers from past

years, alumni coming back, and more.

Before a new culture is established, there has to be an inspiration within the people to achieve a common purpose. Before that common purpose is achieved, there has to be a strong belief that passes down from class to class.

“The biggest piece was sitting down with our seniors and explaining to them my vision for the team,” said Mensen. “I wanted the Spartans to feel like a family, in which we could depend on each other and hold each other accountable.

Football is a unique sport because we all have to do our own part in order for the collective to succeed. When the seniors were able to buy in, it spread throughout the rest of the team and each year the senior class takes on the responsibility of leading the team using our vision.”

Last season, Mensen led the Spartans to a season record of 12-1. Despite losing in the quarterfinals in 2019 and 2021, Simley finally made it over the hump and made history achieving its first-ever Minnesota high school football state championship after beating the Hutchinson Tigers 34-24, the reigning champions. The Class 4A championship win felt much sweeter after beating the historic rough tough Tigers, who beat the Spartans 40-0 the previous season in the 4A quarterfinals.

Overall last season, Simley took over Class 4A by storm. Offensively, the team posted over 3,500 rushing yards

and over 1,000 in the air, outscoring nine teams by 20 points or more. Defensively, they held their opponents to an average of 12.9 points, holding five teams to seven points or under with two shutouts. After a program-changing season, Coach Mensen was named the 2022 High School Coach of the Year by the Minnesota Vikings.

“I was stunned, to be honest,” said Mensen. “There are so many amazing coaches in this state and I never imagined being counted in those ranks. I love my job and show up every day trying to make my athletes and this program better. To be given this award was very humbling. I owe everything to my players and staff. The award is a testament to their hard-working mentality and effort that was put in day after day.”

The award was well deserved as Coach Mensen strives to develop phenomenal young men through hard work and toughness while pursuing excellence in the classroom, in the field of competition, and in the community.

“Following up a championship year can be a daunting task, but I know this team is up to the challenge,” said Mensen. “We have a lot of talented athletes, but we do lack experience. Our job as a coaching staff will be to put our players in the best possible position to succeed. I’m excited to see what this team can do!”

Preseason Top 5 teams in Minnesota

1. Maple Grove Maple Grove went undefeated last season while achieving a Class 6A Championship win against Rosemount (27-10). During the season, they tripled their opponents, averaging 36.7 points per game, beating five opponents by 30 points or more.

Defensively, they held six opponents to just seven points or under. Down the stretch of the season, they had three consecutive shutout weeks against St. Michael-Albertville, Mounds View, and Hopkins.

The Crimson has made two 6A Prep Bowl appearances in the last two seasons with only two losses. However, this season could be tough for the Crimson as they adjust to a new team due to losing vital seniors like quarterback Jacob Kilzer, who accounted for 3,600 yards of total offense and 33 touchdowns, running back Jordan Olagbaju, and linebacker Tanner Albeck. Despite their deep roster change, their upcoming regular season schedule consists of six teams that finished under .500 last season, so the Crimson still have a good chance of making state.

2. Mankato West After going 12-1 with a championship game appearance last season, Mankato West has proven they can become a powerhouse in Class 5A. The season prior, the Scarlets went undefeated with a 13-0 record and a Class 5A championship to show for it. In the last two seasons, they had 14 shutouts and scored over 400 points in both seasons.

Mankato West has been an offensive and defensive force, sending several players to Division 1 programs. The Scarlet’s top wide receiver, Jalen Smith, is committed to the University of Min-

nesota. Smith is the first Mankato West football recruit to go to a Power Five school since quarterback Philip Nelson in 2012, who also went to the University of Minnesota.

This season, Mankato West has the potential to make another Prep Bowl appearance based on the coaching staff and the talent this team continues to produce.

Their upcoming season consists of several teams over .500 from last season.

3. Simley After a couple of seasons, the Simley Spartans have established themselves as a great team. Over the past four seasons, the Spartans have posted a 33-9 record and four state tournament appearances.

Last season, they posted a 12-1 record,

winning their first six games and suffering only one loss during the regular season. They also achieved their first-ever prep bowl championship in Simley history.

Overall last season, Simley took over Class 4A by storm. Offensively, the team posted over 3,500 rushing yards and over 1,000 in the air, outscoring nine teams by 20 points or more. Defensively, they held their opponents to an average of 12.9 points, holding five teams to seven points or under with two shutouts.

This season the Spartans have a great chance of keeping the ball rolling to another state appearance. Their regular season holds a couple of tough teams, but overall this new Spartan en-

ergy could continue being dominant in Class 4A. 4. Minneota The reigning Class 1A champions made their second consecutive state championship last season with a 12-2 record. The Vikings held opponents to an average of 12 points while racking up an average of 38. They put up huge numbers offensively throwing over 1,800 yards and over 3,000 yards rushing.

Over the past two years, this team has become a problem in Class 1A and created a combined record of 25-3. Minneota has a track record of getting everybody involved regardless of age, which has worked well for the Vikings.

However, this season could be tough for the Vikings as they lose key pieces like quarterback Isaac Pohlen, Zach Fier, and Peyton Gillund. This upcoming season, they will face several .500 teams from last season. Let’s see if the Vikings can overcome their key losses and return to U.S. Bank Stadium.

5. Barnesville Last season, the Barnesville Trojans achieved a Class 2A perfect 13-0 season record and its first-ever state championship win. During the season, The Trojans gave up only 20 points at most in a game and shut out more than half of their opponents. The Trojans’ defense ranked among the stingiest in Minnesota in surrendering an average of about 5 points per game.

The Trojans have been an exceptional team for the past four years, making three state appearances. They dominantly win games and are tactical in all phases. With a winning culture like this, Barnesville will be a state contender for years to come.

2023 MFCA Hall of Fame inductees

Terry Bahlmann, Marshall High School Division

Chuck Ross, Underwood - High School Division

Terry Bahlmann is a 1977 graduate of East Waterloo, High School in Waterloo, Iowa. After graduation, he attended Iowa Falls Community College earning an AA degree. Terry then attended the University of Northern Iowa where he earned his BA degree. Terry pursued his master’s degree at Southwest State UniTerry versity completing it in 2010.

Bahlmann Terry coached at several different schools in Iowa before coming to Marshall High School in Marshall, Minn. At Marshall, he serves as the head football coach, strength coach, and physical education instructor. Terry has been a head football coach for 38 seasons. Coach Bahlmann has been the head football coach for the Marshall Tigers for the past 18 seasons. He has a career record of 260-106. His 260 career victories currently rank him 5th among Minnesota active football coaches in wins.

In his 18 seasons in Marshall, his teams have compiled a record of 136-41. His Marshall teams have qualified for the State Tournament three times and were also section co-champs in 2020. His 2016 team made it to the semi-finals at U.S. Bank Stadium. Terry’s teams have won 19 conference or district championships, winning a state championship and state runner up in Iowa. He has been named conference or district coach of the year 18 times. Terry has been named Section Coach of the year four times.

Coach Bahlmann was the head coach for the Outstate in the 2007 Minnesota Football Coaches All Star Game and served as an assistant for the 2016 game. He is a past President of the MFCA. He has sent 11 Marshall players on to play Division 1 football and many others to the Division 2 and 3 level. Former Marshall player Trey Lance was selected as the 3rd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

In his free time, Terry enjoys traveling around the country to see former players and spending time with his grandchildren. Terry is married to Jan and has three children, Allison, Dani, and Brad.

Chuck is a 1982 graduate of Ortonville High School in Ortonville, Minn. He went on to attend the University of Minnesota, Morris in 1984 and graduated in 1988 with a degree in Life Sciences. While attending Morris, Chuck was a running back coach as well as the co-head coach of the JV team.

After graduation, his stops included BOLD High School and Ridgewater College in Willmar before landing at Underwood.

Chuck’s coaching career started in 1984 at Ortonville as a junior high coach and he was hooked. Chuck’s first high school job was at BOLD High School where he served as the defensive coordinator. While coaching at BOLD, his team played in three state championship games Chuck Ross – winning the title twice.

Chuck then went to Ridgewater College in Willmar, Minn. While there as the defensive coordinator, he helped direct them to a state playoff appearance. In 1998 he was hired at Underwood High School as the head football coach. During his tenure of 23 years, he helped Underwood make seven state tournament appearances and amassed a 142-94 career record.

Chuck’s teams also won three conference and two sub district titles. In 2015, he was named the 9-Man Coach of the Year. Chuck is a 7-time Section Coach of the Year, 3-time Conference Coach of the Year, and a 2-time District Coach of the Year.

Chuck has coached in the All-Star Game and has served as a president in the MFCA. Chuck states that coaching in the All Star game made him a better coach by spending a week with other great coaches. He has served as a member of the Football Advisory Board and has been a sub district representative for the MFCA. In his off-time, Chuck enjoys hunting, fishing, and golfing with his family and friends. Chuck is married to Diane and has three children: Jacey, and stepsons Grant Solem and the late Trevor Solem. Chuck’s biggest enjoyment in coaching was “watching each team through the years progress into fine young men that strived to achieve a common goal and seeing them proudly become part of ‘our’ Rocket football family.”

Randy Kuechenmeister, Blue Earth Area - High School Division Randy is a 1980 graduate of Luverne High School in Luverne Minn.. He then went to Southwest State University in Marshall where he earned a degree in Physical Education and Health. After graduation, he spent one year teaching in Worthington before moving on to Blue Earth Area High School. Randy has been teaching and coaching at Blue Earth Area High School for the past 35 years. He was an assistant football coach for five years until he became the head coach in the fall of 1991.

As a head coach, Randy has amassed a career record of 179-119 with four conference titles, eight section titles and one state championship in 2012. Randy has been voted Conference Coach of the year three times, a District Coach of the Year once, and an eight time Section Randy Coach of the Year. He was named the Class AA Coach of the Year in 2020 and the Class AAA Kuechenmeister Coach of the Year in 2012. He has also coached in the MFCA All-Star game.

Randy is grateful for having the opportunity to coach at Blue Earth Area for 35 years. His highlights include working and developing great relationships with a lot of great people and developing great relationships with other coaches around the state. One of his greatest moments was capturing a state title in 2012.

Randy is married to Kristin and has two children, Joe, and Katelyn, who is married to Blake Boran.

Doug Ekmark, Park - Assistant Coach Division Doug Ekmark is a 1966 graduate of Anoka High School. After graduation, he became a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army.

Following his service, he attended Hamline University, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1974. Doug later earned a Masters Degree from the University of St. Thomas. Doug has coached at a variety of schools at the college and high school level.

At the college level, Doug has coached at Northern State University, Anoka Ramsey Community College, and North Hennepin Community College. At the high school level, Doug served as the Doug Ekmark head coach at Park High School in Cottage Grove for 26 years.

He has been an assistant coach at Academy of Holy Angels and Spring Lake Park High School.

Doug has been named a conference coach of the year and is a member of the Park High School Hall of Fame. Doug served on the selection committee for the MFCA All-Star game for 26 years, chairing 10 of those years. Doug won one conference title at Park High school and has been a part of 7 conference championships, 5 section championships and a state runner up while at Spring Lake Park High School. He has also won two district championships and one section championship while at the Academy of Holy Angels.

Doug says the highlight of his career has been the relationships with players, coaches, and parents over the past 49 years. He feels fortunate to have grown up in a football town and has been blessed to be able to coach for a lifetime. He is married to Jane and has two children, Karen and Kimberly.

Darrell Thompson, U Of M, Green Bay Packers, Bolder Options - Citation Division Darrell Thompson is a 1986 graduate of John Marshall High School in Rochester, Minn. He went on to the University of Minnesota where he was a running back for the Gophers, graduating in 1990. He went on to play in the NFL for five years. In high school, Darrell was All-State in football, basketball, and track. He was a McDonald’s All American in basketball and a Gatorade All American in football. In college, his football honors included All Big Ten, Playboy All American, and a Fiesta Bowl All American.

When he wasn’t playing football, Darrell was working to help Darrell others. Since 1994, he has been a part of Bolder Options, which Thompson works with youth, mentorship, Community Involvement Programs, leadership, and public speaking. Darrell has also been a broadcaster for the University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Football since 1998. He is an analyst and does color commentary for radio broadcasts as well. Darrell has become a voice to enjoy during Gopher football broadcasts. Darrell has also served on the boards of the Minnesota State High School League, Twin Cities Public Television, United Way, and Prodeo Academy.

Darrell is married to Stephanie and has four children: Dominique, Indigo, True, and Race. Darrell enjoys traveling all over the United States and has traveled to five other countries. He enjoys spending time with his kids, car, fishing, and yoga.

The exposure of Minnesota football recruits continues to grow

Minnesota high school sports have been overlooked for decades as the west coast and southern states take up most of the shine. Specifically on a football front, former Minnesota football athletes received minimal Division 1 recruitment looks compared to other regions, mainly around the Midwest within FCS schools and the Big Ten Conference.

But that has altered in the last five years or so. The narrative around Minnesota high school football is slowly but surely evolving as a result of previous prospects earning a name for themselves in Division 1 football.

One Minnesotan persevered after being passed over and eventually made it to the Power Five level. Currently a linebacker at TCU, Namdi Obiazor is one of the players helping change the narrative of Minnesota players competing at a high level. In the 2022-2023 season, he played in all 15 games with two starts. He placed eighth on the team with 49 tackles.

“I feel like I was always being overlooked just being an athlete from Minnesota,” said Obiazor. “Coming out of high school, I was a defensive back, and you don’t think of a DB from Minnesota going Power Five unless they are going to the University of Minnesota. Most of the time, if you are a coach, you would rather take a Florida DB or a Texas DB unless the player is really like that.”

Since the Class of 2020, Minnesota has generated over 100 Division 1

commits. Only 14 of the 52 recruits with Power Five commitments made their commitments outside the Big Ten Conference. Among the best prospects were Jaxon Howard of LSU, Lucas Heyer of Stanford, Wyatt Gilmore of Oklahoma, and Joe Alt of Notre Dame. Alt started all 13 games in 2022 and has been in the starting lineup at left tackle for 21 consecutive games on the Irish offensive line. His efforts earned him numerous accolades, including the 2022 Associated Press All-American First Team and the 2022 Pro Football Focus All-American First Team.

“I feel like Minnesota recruits are getting more exposure because the past players are showing what we can do,” Obiazor added. “They are also going to different states and competing just to show that Minnesota athletes can compete with other states.”

Minnesota has sent many recruits to high levels of competition, even though there aren’t many of its players in Power Five conferences outside the Big Ten. The increased exposure of Minnesota recruits is likely due to those who came before them and a few current players.

North Minneapolis native Tyler Johnson committed to the University of Minnesota as a wide receiver in the C/O 2016.

Johnson left Minnesota second all-time in receptions with 213, and the all-time leader in both receiving yards (3,305) and receiving touchdowns (33). He also earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors in 2019 and Outback Bowl MVP in 2020.

after playing for Minnesota. In his first season, he contributed to the Bucs’ 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV. Jermaine Johnson was another Minnesotan who thrived in college before joining the NFL. As a sophomore, Johnson played for the Georgia Bulldogs where he had 20 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

As a senior, he finished third on the team with four sacks, 16 total tackles, and 11 quarterback hurries. Toward the end of the season, Johnson entered the transfer portal and enrolled at Florida State and finished his final season of eligibility with 70 tackles and led the ACC with 18 tackles for loss and 12 sacks. After his performance, he was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and Firstteam All-ACC. After his college career,

Johnson was selected in the first round with the 26th overall pick by the New York Jets in the 2022 NFL Draft. He played in 14 games as a rookie, compiling 2.5 sacks and 29 total tackles.

“When players go to a Power Five school and they do well, it shows coaches that we have athletes that are good enough to compete and play at that level,” said Obiazor. “When they go recruit for players, they’re going to go back to that area.”

By setting an example and establishing the bar, this new wave of exceptional recruits has sparked a domino effect for future recruits. If future recruits continue to demonstrate their talent at the FBS level, Minnesota high school football will soon be respected across the nation.

Honoring a Minnesota Icon

Very few are known by one name.

In Minnesota? There are maybe three: Prince. Sid. And of course, Bud. Harry Peter “Bud” Grant, Jr., was born on May 20, 1927, in Superior, Wis., where his father called him “Buddy Boy.” Eventually known to all as Bud, the Minnesota icon, Pro Football Hall of Fame, Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Vikings Ring of Honor coach passed away at his Minnesota home Saturday morning, March 11, 2023. He was 95.

The sad news completed a remarkable run through which Grant left indelible marks on the state and region. He transformed the Vikings from a fledgling franchise into a championship contender through his legendary leadership. Grant continued to impact the Vikings positively as a consultant after retiring from the sidelines.

Early Influences Grant was a tri-sport athlete at Superior Central High School, having overcome polio as a child, and he later enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He was assigned in 1945 to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois, where he played football for the great Paul Brown.

Upon honorable discharge from the service, Grant attended the University of Minnesota, where he once again lettered in three sports and twice earned All-Big Ten honors in football – and where he first met Sid Hartman, a young sports reporter covering the Gophers.

The two developed an incredible bond between athlete and reporter, and at Grant’s induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994, more than four decades later, it was Hartman who presented his closest, personal friend for enshrinement.

“As all of you know, working journalists are taught to avoid friendships with the people they cover. They call it ‘conflict of interest,’” Hartman said during the ceremony in Canton, Ohio. “If that would have been the rule some 45 years ago, it would have cost me one of the best friends I have on this earth.”

Hartman passed away at age 100 in October 2020.

In 1950, Grant was drafted by the NBA’s Minneapolis Lakers – for which Hartman quietly was the general manager – and by the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles. He initially turned his focus toward the hardwood, playing two seasons for the Lakers, including his role on the 1950 championship team.

His paycheck for a full season, plus taking home the NBA title that year? Six thousand dollars.

“Well, that was enough for me to get married on, have a family and buy a house and buy a car,” Grant recalled matter-of-factly during a 2016 interview with NFL Films.

Grant then transitioned back to football and signed with the Eagles, becoming the only man to ever play in both the NBA and NFL. He played two seasons for the Eagles, first as a defensive end and then as a wide receiver, finishing second in the league in receiving in 1952.

When Grant refused to re-sign with the Eagles for the amount offered, he became the league’s first-ever free agent.

Philadelphia did reach out again, but he already had left the U.S. to join the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. After just four seasons, Grant accepted the role of Winnipeg’s head coach at just 29 years old, making him the youngest head coach in CFL history.

“They wanted to give me a two-year contract; I said, ‘I want one. If I don’t like it, I want to go back to playing,’” Grant recalled. “What did I have to lose? I’d never

coached in my life.”

You’d never know that was the case.

The Blue Bombers under Grant made six Grey Cup appearances in 10 seasons, winning the championship four times.

Vikings Voyage Grant continued his coaching success in the NFL, taking the helm of the Minnesota Vikings in 1967 as the second head coach in franchise history.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound, 4-star safety is the No. 1 ranked recruit in Minnesota and No. 29 as a safety for the C/O 2024, according to 247Sports. The Esko high school defensive back runs a 4.59 40-yard dash, marks a 35-inch vertical, 265-pound bench, 405-pound squat, and a 265-pound clean. The Esko standout did just that his junior season accomplishing 75 tackles, three interceptions, four forced fumbles, and two sacks. Perich also did damage offensively, rushing for more than 800 yards and 11 touchdowns, 17 receptions, and nine receiving touchdowns. The playmaker also showed out on special teams returning two kick returns for touchdowns and three punt returns for touchdowns for a total of 455 yards. Last season, Perich led the Eskimos to a 3A quarterfinal game and a season record of 11-1.

The speedy defensive back can make a play and be effective in several positions on the field. He has good ball skills on both sides of the ball, with a good sense of where the play is going defensively. He has a quick burst of speed and acceleration, which leaves defenders in the dust. On special teams, he puts on a show with his swift cuts and finesse, both complemented by his speed.

“Me and my teammates communicate really well when we are on the field, so that makes it easier for me to play so many positions, also the coaches being able to coach me through the plays and making me ready,” said Perich. “Lastly, I just want to help my team win and if playing both ways is going to give us the best chance, I will do whatever it takes.

“Obviously, our goal this year is to make it to the state championship and win it. We have gotten to the state semifinals and state quarterfinals the last two years.

We feel we have a lot of experience winning and hope to recreate our success that we have had. I think with our losses over the last two years, everyone on our team wants it more than anything.”

Perich held several Power Five offers from schools like the University of Washington, Northwestern University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Kansas. However, the small-town recruit chose to stay home and committed to the University of Minnesota on April 19, 2023.

“Staying home is amazing. Being with the boys that I’ve got along with over these past few months and going to be able to play with all of them,” Perich added.

“I can’t wait! I think the people say you can’t any get better than the relationships that I’ve built with all the coaches and players, and I can’t wait to start playing with them!”

3. Emerson Mandell

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound interior offensive lineman comes in as No. 3 overall in Minnesota and No. 43 for the C/O 2024, according to 247Sports. The 4-star plays for the Irondale Knights, where he led them to a Section 6AAAAA Semifinal game appearance last season.

His 6-10 wingspan makes it hard for a defensive lineman to break away from his blocks.

Mandell is strong and doesn’t give up on plays, and won’t stop until the opponent is on their back. He is very quick and aggressive off the line while driving opponents downfield away from the play. He is very effective in run and pass blocking.

The St. Paul native held several Power Five offers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Missouri, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Penn State, Purdue, Syracuse, and Texas A&M. On July 4, 2023, the powerhouse chose to commit to the Wisconsin Badgers.

5. Jide Abasiri

The Rogers High School 6-foot-4, 245-pound edge rusher sits No. 2 overall in Minnesota and No. 21 in the nation as an edge for the C/O 2024, according to 247Sports. The 4-star runs a 4.78 40-yard dash, marks a 35-inch vertical, 370-pound bench, 485-pound squat, and a 285-pound clean.

The Royals impact player can change the course of the game with his explosive plays. The versatile giant comes off the line with an explosive stab and swipe technique, which makes him a problem for offensive linemen. He has become a vital piece on the Royals defensive line with his rushing and shredding ability. With his track down speed it is very difficult for quarterbacks and running backs to get around him. He has also proven to be an offensive force, lining up as a tight end and occasionally at fullback. At fullback, Gilmore has no problem clearing the lane for his running backs, creating a scary sight for defenders.

“My favorite game last year was against Armstrong when we were down at the half, and I only had one tackle,” said Gilmore. “Then I went out and had two forced fumbles, a sack and two tackles for a loss, and we won the game to go to U.S. Bank Stadium.”

Last season, he led his team to a season record of 9-4 and a Class 5A semifinal game appearance. They were 5-for-5 on fourth down conversions, but unfortunately, they were stopped on the final play from making the Class 5A Prep Bowl.

“Our goal next year is to win the 5A state championship, and we are starving and chomping at the bit to get better after how last year ended,” Gilmore said. “We were one yard short of making the state championship. Now, every time we get tired or slack off during a drill, all we got to do is remind ourselves one more yard. Being one yard away really reminded us how important the little things are in practice, never cutting corners.”

Gilmore currently holds 16 FBS Division 1 offers from several Power Five conferences. On May 28, 2023, he announced his top five schools via Twitter (now known as X), narrowing it down to the University of Minnesota, University of Miami, University of Oklahoma, University of Oregon, and Kansas State University. On June 28, 2023, he decided to play for the Oklahoma Sooners next fall.

“I am extremely blessed to be in the position I am in with football,” said Gilmore.

“I give God all the glory because without his plan for me, I would be lost and certainly wouldn’t be where I am today.”

4. Mason Carrier

The 3-star, 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker from Detroit Lakes lands No. 4 overall in Minnesota for the C/O 2024, according to 247Sports.

Carrier runs a 4.62 40-yard dash, marks a 34-inch vertical, 335-pound bench, 475-pound squat, and 335-pound clean. Last season, Carrier racked up 55 tackles, 679 rushing yards, eight touchdowns, 166 receiving yards, and 500 passing yards. Carrier helped the Lakers defense hold three opponents to 10 points or less, along with a Section 8AAAA Semifinal game appearance.

“I had a great season last year. I stayed healthy and was able to play both ways the entire season. One of my favorite plays was the first one of the season,” said Carrier. “Watching my brother Ethan run for a 70+ yard touchdown. Favorite memories are eating with the team after home games.”

Carrier is patient and closes to the football with maximum effort. He has explosiveness off the ball and finds the ball carrier with a sense of urgency. He can play several roles on the defense but is mainly used as a stand-up edge rusher.

On June 19, 2022 the recruit chose to commit to the University of Minnesota shortly after being a June 5 offer after a solid performance at the annual Gopher camp.

“Culture is unmatched. I’ve been wanting to play for them since I could walk,” Carrier added.

The 6-foot-5, 280-pound 3-star defensive linemen is the No. 5 ranked recruit in Minnesota for the C/O 2024, according to 247Sports. The Prior Lake Laker marks a 215-pound bench, 405-pound squat, and 245-pound clean.

Abasiri has an incredible physique that helps him dominate on the field. He is a strong player who can play defensive tackle and defensive end. He is good at finding the quarterback and has incredible reach to block passes.

“I think the season went alright. It was my first time playing real football, and it was challenging to adapt to it at first,” said Abasiri. “Although, I did create some great memories with my teammates and enjoyed my season. My favorite play was my pass deflection and getting intercepted by my teammate.

“My goal this season is to do things our program has never done before. I want to lead my team past the state semifinals and beat Eden Prairie for the first time. The biggest thing driving me are the people that support me. I want to make them proud and exceed all expectations,” he said.

Abasiri held several Power Five offers from Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, and Washington. On March 25, 2023, he chose to stay home and play for the Golden Gophers next fall.

“It’s a blessing to be able to stay home and play for the Gophers. I’ve received so much support from the coaches, players, and community,” Abasiri said. “The biggest thing that drove me to the Gophers is how much they really care. They’ve put me in the position to play D1 ball and helped me with many different things outside of football.”

24 Top HS Players to Watch 6. Mo Saine

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound interior defensive lineman comes in as the No. 6 ranked recruit in Minnesota for the C/O 2024, according to 247Sports. The Eden Prairie Eagle marks a 315-pound bench, 450-pound squat, and 285-pound clean. The 3-star recruit was a key player on the Eagle’s defensive line, helping them to a Class 6A Semifinal appearance game.

Saine also helped the Eagle’s defense hold four teams to seven points or less.

“It went great. I learned from last season being my 2nd year playing football,” said Saine.

“My goal is to win the state championship. Last season we lost in the semi-finals but this year we have a lot of talent.”

The interior defensive talent fires off the ball and locates the carrier well. He plays aggressively and can sniff plays out efficiently.

He’s a driving force in the middle that makes the rest of the defense gravitate toward him. His power can collapse pockets and make it difficult for an offense to run the ball.

Despite his muscular shape, he’s quick on his feet and is already well-developed.

The elite recruit picked up offers from Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Arizona State, and the Army. However, Saine chose to commit to the University of Minnesota on April 14, 2023, only eight days after being offered.

“It’s a great feeling to stay home and play for the Gophers,” Saine said. “As a kid I always looked up to the Gopher athletes. The biggest factor which led to my commitment was the culture at the University of Minnesota.”

8. Jalen Smith

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound wide receiver sits No. 8 overall in Minnesota and No. 1 wide receiver in the state for the C/O 2024, according to 247Sports. The Mankato West receiver clocks a 4.52 40-yard dash, 315-pound squat, and a 405-pound deadlift. Last season, he had 49 receptions for 729 yards and eight touchdowns for the Scarlets.

“The season last year went very well despite us losing in the state finals,” said Smith. “We were a very new team and there were only four returning starters from the year before. For me personally, I definitely put myself on the map by having a productive offensive season which allowed me to be in the position I’m in today. Memories such as practices with my teammates, and being able to play in the U.S. Bank Stadium stick out to me.”

Smith has quick releases off the line and will blow right past a defender. He has good route-running ability with sharp cuts and can show off his speed after the catch.

He can also adjust to the ball easily and has good ball-tracking skills. He’s shown he can play outside the numbers but can also play in the slot. Last season, he helped the Scarlets go 12-1 and a 5A Prep Bowl game appearance. Smith is also a speedster on the track for Mankato West. Last season, he ran a 10.87 in the 100-meter dash.

“My goals for next season are to win a state championship and have an even more productive offensive season,” Smith said. “The one thing I can say is definitely driving me is seeing another team beat us in the state finals. That’s something I never want to feel again.”

Smith held several Division 1 offers from schools like Iowa State, Kent State, and North Dakota State University. After an unofficial visit, the small-town recruit chose to stay home and commit to the University of Minnesota on May 12, 2023. The speedster is the first Mankato West football recruit to go to a Power Five school since quarterback Philip Nelson in 2012.

“Being able to stay home and play for the Gophers is something only a few people can understand how big it is,” said Smith. “Things such as coaching staff and the feel of the campus are both factors that led to me staying home. And lastly, to be the first P5 recruit since 2012 from my school goes to show the work I’ve put in and my ability on the field which allows me to feel ecstatic about my situation.”

7. Simon Seidl

The 6-foot 170-pound 3-star athlete is the No. 7-ranked recruit in Minnesota for the C/O 2024, according to 247Sports. Seidl is a two-way player from Hill-Murray High School. The pure athlete plays both wide receiver and defensive back for the Pioneers.

Last season, he caught 19 passes for 364 yards and five touchdowns and helped the Pioneers to a Section 3AAAA Championship game appearance. The three-sport athlete also performs on the ice and the track for Hill-Murray. This past season, he posted three goals and nine assists for the Pioneers hockey team.

Seidl is a speedy player who can get to top speed in a blink of an eye. On offense, he mostly lines up as a slot receiver and has great route-running technique. He is very athletic and can track down and adjust to the ball, and is slippery in space and can make tacklers miss after the catch. As a cornerback, he reads the quarterback well and has good ball skills. Seidl can also be physical and a reliable tackler. He has a good change of direction that helps him lock down receivers.

His only other scholarship offer was from Wyoming before committing to the Golden Gophers as a cornerback on March 5, 2023, after being offered the day before.

9. Sam Macy The 6-foot-5, 220-pound 3-star edge is the No. 9-ranked recruit in Minnesota for the C/O 2024, according to 247Sports. The outside impact player runs a 4.77 40-yard dash, 520-pound deadlift, and a 35-inch vertical. Last season, the All-District nominee led Chanhassen High School to an 8-2 record and a 2A Section Championship game appearance. Macy also totaled 44 tackles last season.

The large framed edge has surprising speed that catches the offense off guard. He’s good at shedding players off and getting to the ball. He plays with good speed, does a nice job with his hands, and can get to the quarterback.

Macy gives good effort in pursuit and will run plays down.

Macy had Division 1 offers from Air Force, Army, Navy, North Dakota, and South Dakota. On June 5, 2023, he chose to stay home and play for the Golden Gophers a day after being offered after performing well at the annual Gophers camp.

10. Khijohnn Cummings-Coleman The 6-foot-1, 185-pound wide receiver from Coon Rapids finishes the list as the No. 10 ranked recruit in Minnesota and the No. 3 ranked receiver in the state for the C/O 2024, according to 247Sports. The playmaker racked up 51 receptions, 870 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine carries for 137 yards for the Cardinals last season.​​ Last season, he was No. 6 in receiving yards. His clutch catches became a difference maker in several close games for the Cardinals, making him a go-to player. In week three, Cummings-Coleman had a big game against Buffalo when he scored three touchdowns, one on a 95-yard run.

“Last season went great for me. I achieved things that I’ve wanted to throughout high school in just one season and I had a great team and staff to help me with it,” said Cummings-Coleman.

The human highlight reel can adjust and make a play on the ball. He has great hands and can put on a show after the catch with his moves and breakaway speed. His route running is solid, and he has a sense of urgency to get to his spots. He’s a pure explosive player and can get out of tight situations.

The Coon Rapids native currently holds Division 1 offers from Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa State, the University of Kansas, Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, Army, and SDSU. “Two things that helped me get here are that I was constantly working on my game and my body, and secondly, I was always confident in myself,” Cummings-Coleman said. “It feels good to have these offers and to know that I am capable of playing amongst the best athletes in the country.”

The Midwest Premier Football League grows in popularity

Finding impactful training for youth tackle football players seemed to only be possible by traveling hundreds of miles, which is a large reason for the new youth football league, the MPFL, or the Midwest Premier Football League, started by JJ Kern in 2020.

The League has four showcases each year: spring, summer, fall, and winter. These showcases involve a three-day long camp starting with a combine for each age group. The second and third days are when the games are played.

The second day of the camp begins with a two-hour long practice, giving a chance for the teams to get to know each other and work on plays and chemistry.

Days two and three mostly consist of the games, which lead up to the championship on the third day. During the summer showcase in July, there were a total of seven games on the second day and four games on the third for the championship games. The age restrictions for the showcases are 7-14 years old.

The league was formed because Kern found it challenging to find his son Brayden a way to play tackle football without driving to the metro or even going out-of-state for practice.

“I was trying to find a way for my son to play tackle football at eight years old. The only places I could find were closer to the cities, so we would travel to the metro, driving two hours to practice.

I wanted to get him and other kids in his situation a chance to play tackle football without the long travel,” said Kern.

The league quickly grew in popularity.

“In our first two practices, we had a total of two kids participate and one was my son Brayden. Just two months later we had over 200 kids playing in the Fargo Dome.”

As of the Summer Showcase in July, the MPFL league had over 3,000 kids signed up.

The biggest difference between most youth football leagues and the MPFL is geographic diversity.

“Each athlete gets to mingle with kids and the talent from all over the state,” said three-year coach Nolan Faber.

Though the majority of kids during the 2023 summer showcase were natives of Minnesota, the other showcases brought in kids and families from all over the states and some came from out of the country.

“Our Spring Showcase featured 30 Canadians signed up, and over the last few years we had over 30 states represented at our showcases,” said Kern.

The MPFL is built on four key elements: Coaching, Foundational, Teamwork, and Competition.

Coaching is one of, if not the most important ways to impact young athletes and set them up for success both on and off the field. The MPFL selects coaches from high school, college and professional coaching ranks. They also look out for former college and professional players for the coaching staff. The coaching staff for this league gives each participant an edge in their development.

“The coaches are who got me to play with the MPFL, they make us work hard but are very supportive along the way,” said running back and linebacker Marquell Mitchell .

The athletes are not the only ones learning and improving themselves through the showcases.

“I’ve taken away so much from these kids,” said Faber. “We are a family and it’s made me see the unity and

team feeling with family and the kids.

It’s even made my kids step up and work harder on and off the field.”

The MPFL is built on a strong foundation that stresses safety and fundamentals. The league is not only a chance to become a better football player but also to learn more about the basic elements of football. The practices and games are carefully monitored to make sure there is plenty of player safety.

Teamwork makes the dream work, right? That’s why the MPFL emphasizes the importance of teamwork and makes sure that the coaches know each player’s ability and work ethic to place them in the correct team setting to benefit their long-term growth, whether on the gridiron, in the classroom, or with family and friends.

Finally, the MPFL creates excellent competition by playing games each showcase weekend. The league makes sure each team is prepared for an intense competition which gives each player a chance to get game action.

“These are some of the best players at their ages in the state,” said Kern. “We have great athletes that want to come out compete and win.”

It’s not all about winning the games during the MPFL Showcases.

“We all have a job out there on the field, everybody gets held accountable no matter if you’re a QB, running back, linebacker, or even coach, we are here to grow as players, coaches, and people,” said Faber.

The MPFL’s mission statement is as follows: “MPFL provides elite-level football instruction, coaching and competition to develop participants athletically, socially and emotionally.”

The goal of the MPFL is not only to develop great athletes but to make great kids as well.

“It’s not only about winning the games but learning how to be a better player, teammate, student, and person in general,” said Kern.

The Summer Showcase in July was held at St. Cloud State University’S football field, which had very good attendance. There were over 3,000 kids who signed up, and while most hailed from Minnesota, there were some out-

of-state athletes who came to play and make a name for themselves.

One player who traveled to central Minnesota from North Dakota was Sophia Betz. Betz was one of just a couple of girls who took part in the MPFL Showcase. Their goal was to show that girls can compete and excel in tackle football, which was what they did.

“I joined the MPFL because it looked really fun. I love sports and football is one of my favorite ones to play,” said Betz.

Other than football, wrestling is Betz’s favorite sport to compete in. She has wrestled for a couple of years in Petersburgh, N.D. This is Betz’s first year with the MPFL, but she has been playing tackle football for three years now. Football has taught her many lessons, especially with her time playing in the MPFL. “I’ve learned that hard work pays off, and you get rewarded the harder you work and the more you listen,” said Betz.

Midwest Premier Football League player spotlight

The Midwest Premier Football League is an opportunity to not just showcase youth talent from around the state, but also allows for players to get a chance to compete with others in their age level and of their ability.

Founded in 2011, the MPFL hosts several showcases throughout Minnesota for players age 7-14.

Kingg Taylor The following are capsules of some of the league’s players who have shown a dedication to the game and improvement in skills due to their committment.

Kingg Taylor is the older brother of Mari and JO JO Taylor. They are a hardworking and dedicated football family. The boys possess exceptional talent and have diligently honed their Sophia Betz skills. Their father, Demont, has played a pivotal role by coaching them since a young age, and their involvement in youth leagues like MPFL and Northstars Elite has set them on a path to become dominant high school players with aspirations of becoming college student-athletes.

Shaunn and Gavynn Reyes have been actively participating in MPFL and Northstars Elite events since the age of 5. Shaunn, the older brother, has demonstrated exceptional dedication and hard work in transitioning from a lineman to playing as a wide receiver and defensive back. This transition is no easy feat, but his perseverance has paid Adrian Caldwell off. Meanwhile, Gavynn has been making significant strides in the 5th grade division, establishing himself as a dominant force in the trenches earning the nickname “G-Wagon.”

Adrian Caldwell is the older brother of Gavin and Preston Caldwell. These boys have displayed dominance in the trenches for three years, showcasing their skills and potential.

Preston, also known as “Purtty,” has been actively playing football since the age of six. Their father, Jason, has been coaching them for nearly four years within Isaiah Vizenor the MPFL and Northstars Elite program. Additionally, their older brother Isaiah was a youth player and is now preparing to play for up-and-coming Staples-Motley.

At the last event, Isaiah Vizenor and Brodie Sott showcased their dominance in the trenches. Alongside them, Isaiah’s younger Brodie Sott brother, Messiah, also ex-

hibited impressive skills.

Brodie is undeniably one of the most talented players in North Dakota, while the Vizenor brothers hail from Minnesota and possess remarkable abilities.

The MPFL Youth Football Showcases have provided them with valuable opportunities to compete with and against each other.

JT Hunnecook We are thrilled to recognize JT Hunnecook as an exceptional player and a regular participant in MPFL events for the past three years. Alongside him, his younger brother JQ has also demonstrated outstanding skills on the field.

Both JT and JQ are versatile playmakers who excel in multiple positions. Their families have been Brayden and Karma Kern incredibly supportive, providing valuable assistance to the league and its events. Their commitment and involvement truly embody the spirit of a strong football family. Additionally, JQ is part of The Inner City Ducks Travel football program, further showcasing his dedication and passion for the sport.

The MPFL has witnessed numerous brothers playing together, but we are delighted to highlight a unique sibling combination: Bradyden Kern, a talented linebacker, playing behind his sister Karma. During the Summer Event, Brayden achieved a remarkable feat by scoring a touchdown, followed by a two-point Marquel Mitchel conversion by Karma. This moment was truly special and historic, as Karma became the first girl in MPFL history to score. Their teamwork and achievements serve as an inspiration to all.

Marquel Mitchell is recognized as one of the top 12-year-old football players in Minnesota. He excels as a dominant running back and versatile defensive player Alpha Meaway on the Minnesota Jays travel team, which finished the year as the 3rd-ranked team in the nation. Marquel’s exceptional skills earned him the team MVP title.

Alpha Meaway is the all-time leader in touchdowns in the Midwest Premier Football League (MPFL) history. He is a dynamic offensive player, known for his ability to both run and catch the ball. With Ethan Johnson a combination of speed and power, Alpha poses a constant threat to opposing defenses.

Ethan Johnson has rapidly established himself as a standout performer at the MPFL Showcase Events over the past year. His exceptional combination of speed and power sets him apart, especially considering his age. With valuable expeLe Rail Johnson rience gained from competing against top-notch competition, Ethan has elevated his game to new heights.

Le Rail Johnson is a standout player on both offense and defense, excelling as a running back/ wide receiver (RB/WR) on offense and defensive end/ linebacker (DE/LB) on defense. He has consistently demonstrated his prowess Dezmond Reynolds on both sides of the ball,

showcasing his skills at MPFL Showcase events. Le Rail’s remarkable improvement has turned him into a formidable force, not only at the showcase events but also as a valuable contributor to the Minnesota Jays travel team in the National Spring Championship.

Dezmond Reynolds has made significant strides Dominic Washington in his performance since participating in the MPFL Showcase Events and joining the Minnesota Jays travel football team. As a running back and linebacker (RB/LB), he has displayed immense growth and potential. Dominic Washington has consistently demonstrated his dedication and coachability over the past two years. As a multisport athlete, he possesses a competitive spirit and harbors ambitious aspirations. The MPFL recognizes Dominic’s potential for a bright Briar Schuett (QB) and future, both on and Jobey Tvedt (RB) off the field, and we have no doubt that he will continue to thrive and make significant contributions.

Aiden Bervig is an incredibly talented athlete, showcasing elite speed and a commendable coachability. With his exceptional abilities, Aiden’s future shines brightly in the world of sports.

RB Jobey Tvedt is an Jaxon Theis electrifying runner and receiver who poses a significant threat on the offensive side of the ball. Jobey has showcased his dominance in numerous Showcase Events, particularly when paired with his teammate QB Briar Schuett.

Briar is a strong-armed and versatile QB, recognized as a leader in his age level for touchdown passes.

Carter Guest Together, Jobey and Briar form a formidable run-pass threat, contributing greatly to their team’s success.

Jaxon Theis is rapidly emerging as a rising star in the 5th grade division at MPFL Showcase Events. As a highly competitive multisport athlete, he possesses big dreams and aspirations.

Together, they possess immense potential to make a significant impact and establish their names in the upcoming year. With their skills and versatility, James and Earnest have all the ingredients to leave a lasting impression on the field.

Parker Nelson, an offensive and defensive lineman, stands tall above the local competition. By participating in MPFL Showcase events, he has taken his game to another level. Parker’s hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed, as his impressive skills and growth are being recognized by others.

Tyshone Jenkins is a formidable player, possessing size, strength, and physicality on both sides of the ball. He has consistently dominated in youth football, showcasing his exceptional skills. Now, Tyshone is prepared to tackle the challenges of high school football, where his talents are set to make a significant impact. With his abilities and determination, Tyshone is poised to excel at the next level of competition.

Charlie Carik has proven to be a dedicated and hardworking athlete within the MPFL Showcase. His commitment to the sport has led him to participate

The Kern family, led by James “JJ” Kern, are originally from Wadena, Minn. In 2011, JJ Kern initiated the MPFL (Midwest Premier Football League) as an adult semi-pro league, assisting players in advancing to arena and other paid leagues.

However, in 2020, the focus shifted towards youth football.

One of the driving forces behind this transition was Brayden Kern, JJ Kern’s son, The Kern family: Karma, James “JJ”, and Brayden who began playing tackle football at the age of 7 and embarked on a journey of traveling across the country to compete. Observing that regions with a higher percentage of athletes in college and professional sports often started at a younger age, they recognized the importance of fostering such opportunities in their own region.

Motivated by this realization, the MPFL youth division was established, aiming to provide young athletes with the chance to engage in competitive football at an early age. The Kern family’s dedication to promoting youth sports and their commitment to nurturing talent have been instrumental in bringing this initiative to life.

Brayden Kern has Briar Schuett had an eventful year, facing various challenges and triumphs. Unfortunately, at the beginning of last year’s football season, he was hospitalized due to salmonella poisoning, which specifically targeted his spleen. This ordeal required a 13-day stay at the Children’s Hospital, during which he experienced a significant weight loss from 120 pounds to 88 pounds.

After enduring this difficult period, Brayden demonstrated his resilience Jaykob Prill and determination. Despite the setback, he persevered and eagerly awaited his return to the field, which came after a six-week recovery period. Remarkably, Brayden not only made a comeback but also had the opportunity to play.

Brian Schuett is known for his dominant skills as a run-pass option quarterback in his age group.

With his dad’s coaching experience, he is expected to have a successful high school career and make a significant impact in the sport.

Jaykob Prill is an impressive athlete, excelling as both a tight end (TE) and defensive end (DE). Standing over 6 feet tall and weighing nearly 200 pounds in 8th grade, he possesses great size for his age. With his strong work ethic, exceptional skills, and physical attributes, Jaykob has a promising future in football.

Noah Gindorff played high school football in Crosby-Ironton, Minn. He achieved success and set multiple school records, earning a scholarship to play at NDSU. He had a dominant career there, winning multiple National Championships. Currently, he is pursuing his childhood dream of making the Seattle Seahawks roster and supports youth football through autographed memorabilia.

Tom Mahoney Scholarship: Christian Rodriguez, Waseca High School. “Football has guided me to figure out what it takes to achieve success in life. From the beginning of high school I was taught by my coaches around me that in order to get better at football I needed to fully focus on improvement on the field, in the weight room, during the offseason, and in everything else like academics as well. Ever since I’ve taken the advice from those mentors I’ve been able to truly succeed in all involvement and I credit that to the sport itself.”

Don Swanson Scholarship: Matthew Rockwell, Columbia Heights High School. “Not everything in life is going to be pretty and football has set me up to be able to adapt and find a way to be successful and push others alongside myself to meet a level they might not have been able to on their own. Looking at it, football is like an older brother to me. Not only has football taught me lessons, it has also provided me with life long relationships that I can count on to be there for me whenever I need them.”

Les Dreschsel Scholarship: Ethan Klimek, Nevis High School. “I have learned how to build strong relationships with people through my teammates and coaches. Attention to detail was learned through countless hours of practice and film study with my coaches and teammates, a skill which also allows me to succeed in the classroom. My time spent playing football impacted my own life in a positive way, as well as the lives of others. I will take what I have learned from playing this amazing game and apply it in a positive way for the rest of my life.”

David Nigon Scholarship: Benjamin Kopetzki, Andover High School.

“Football impacted me in so many ways beyond just what I learned on the field.

More than anything I had a ton of fun playing football. Playing under the lights with my best friends will forever be one of my favorite places to be. I looked forward to practice everyday and was devastated when my career ended.

The biggest way football impacted me was showing that if you work hard for

something you can accomplish it.”

Al Siegle Scholarship: Corby Kern, Verndale High School. “Although there is one way that football has impacted my life more than I could have ever expected and that is the sense of family. Playing football for my senior year here as a Verndale Pirate has shown me how my teammates and friends have turned into my true family. Win or lose, I would rather play with these select men that have now become a piece of my life forever.”

Andy Nelson Scholarship: Nathaniel Gustafson, Ortonville High School. “Football has taught me several lessons. At the core of these lessons are how to lead, how to remain resilient when the going gets tough, and finally how to be completely dedicated to reaching my goals. Although the end goal will not be a Friday victory, the things I have learned from football will help me as I pursue success in something new. Leadership, resiliency, and dedication will all benefit me as I continue my academic career in college this fall.”

“I also appreciate the friendships I have built through the game of football because I know they will last forever. My teammates became my brothers, my best friends. Being on a team has improved my ability to collaborate with others to achieve a common goal, whether in a drill or a game. Football has also improved my communication skills. Not only as a player, but also as a person and a friend, I’ve learned to communicate more effectively with others.

Jim Gustafson Scholarship: Ryan Retzer, Belle Plaine High School. “The impact that football has had on my determination and will when things get hard is prominent. Football has taught me to be the man I am today through being respectful to others, always going the extra mile when doing something or helping others, responsibility, and leading others by example. The biggest takeaway from football is my motto, grit which is doing the right thing when nobody’s watching.”

John Gross Scholarship: Wyatt McCabe, Watertown-Mayer High School. “After these four years of playing football for Watertown-Mayer, this game taught me that it’s more about the work I am willing to put in when facing adversity than anything else. I know football has prepared me to handle whatever life decides to throw my way.

That’s why football is more than just a game, it’s a way of life.”

Football has taught me to have a great work ethic and give my all to every workout and practice. This is a skill that will suit me well throughout my whole life, including when I have a job in the future. My boss will appreciate having an employee that is committed to doing a great job.”

Ron Scott Scholarship: Cole Hentges, Sartell High School. “Football has developed my work ethic which has helped immensely in other areas of my life. I grew up watching young men play this amazing game and followed their example. Football has made me a role model not only for my teammates, but also for the middle schoolers, as well as athletes in our youth football program. I try to be the best role model I can be for them and that’s made me a better player, but most importantly, a better person.”

Dick Walker Scholarship: Tayte Lacy, Albany High School. “I was introduced to the game of football before I was a one-year-old, as my parents would bring me down to Granite Falls on Friday nights, where we were able to watch my grandpa, Dave Brokke, finish up his high school hall of fame coaching career in 2005. I love talking football, preparing my body for football season, playing football, and reliving my favorite football memories with my family and friends. Football brings people together both on and off the field, and I am forever grateful for the opportunities that football has given me.”

Minnesota Vikings Ring of Honor Spotlights Ron Yary, OL: 1968-81

Cris Carter attended Ohio State University.

Ron Yary only missed two games in his career.

Ron Yary was the first overall pick in the 1968 NFL Draft; he was the first offensive lineman ever to be selected first overall. He remained with the Vikings from 1968-1981 and continued to dominate defensive lines with his blend of size, speed and strength that was unique at the time and ushered in a new era of offensive line play. He missed only two games in his career due to a broken ankle in 1980, but he came back and played through the injury for the rest of the season.

Yary was named All-Pro six consecutive times, named All-NFC eight straight seasons, and played in seven Pro Bowls. He is one of the few Vikings players to play in all of the team’s Super Bowl Appearances (IV, VIII, IX, and XI). He was inducted into the Ring of Honor in 2000 and enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Cris Carter gained a lot of attention in college at Ohio State where he became known for his acrobatic one-handed catches and his keen ability to keep his feet inbounds when it counted. He received the opportunity to continue his on-field antics when the Philadelphia Eagles selected him in the 4th round of the supplemental draft in 1987. He stayed there until 1989, when he was claimed off waivers by the Vikings. Carter played for 16 seasons in 234 career NFL games with the most notable portion in a purple jersey (1990-2001).

As a Viking, Carter set a team record for WRs by playing in 188 and starting in 177 games. He also holds the team records for catches (1,004), receiving TDs (110), receiving yards (12,383), and the most 100-yard receiving games (40). His other accolades include playing in eight straight Pro Bowls (1993-2000), named all All-Pro four times, and being named to the NFL’s Team of the Decade for the 1990s. Carter also was busy off the field in his community and was honored with the Byron “Whizzer” White Award by the NFL Players Association and the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 1999.

The Vikings inducted him into the Ring of Honor on September 14, 2003, and he was enshrined in 2013 into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the 275th member.

Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference SJU’s Wozniak earns Stein-Fallon Scholar-Athlete Award from NFF’s Minnesota Chapter COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s University senior defensive lineman Michael Wozniak (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) earned the 2023 Stein-Fallon Scholar-Athlete Award from the Minnesota chapter of the National Football Foundation (NFF) July 7.

Wozniak and University of Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz are the co-recipients of the 2023 Stein-Fallon Scholar-Athlete Award, which is named in honor of former University of Minnesota football student-athlete Bob Stein and the late Pat Fallon, who was the CEO of Fallon Worldwide and a Minnesota graduate. The Stein-Fallon Scholar-Athlete Award is awarded to one senior football student-athlete from a Minnesota college or university who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement, football leadership and community citizenship.

Wozniak is the fourth Johnnie to earn the Stein-Fallon Scholar-Athlete Award, joining linebackers Carter Hanson ‘17 and David Franta ‘18, and wide receiver Will Gillach ‘19.

He totaled 20.0 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks over his last 14 games going back to the 2021 season and ended his Johnnie career with 31.5 tackles for loss and 19.5 sacks in 32 games.

An accounting major with a 3.87 GPA, Wozniak

earned an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a finalist for the National Football Foundation’s (NFF) Campbell Trophy, nicknamed the academic Heisman, and represented SJU as a member of the 2022 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Dec. 5-7 in Las Vegas. He was also selected to the 22-man, 2022 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team.

The three-time Academic All-MIAC honoree (minimum 3.5 GPA) was a unanimous 2022 preseason All-America and a 2021 D3football.com All-America first-team selection. He started all 12 games and finished with a team-leading 15.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks, including 6.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in two NCAA playoff games, in 2021. Wozniak returned to the field in 2021 after suffering a season-ending hand injury on the first defensive play of the 2019 season – a tackle for loss – at Wisconsin-Stout.

Off the field, Wozniak is in his fifth year raising money for a pair of SJU football’s initiatives, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Tackle Cancer. He was also a member of the Johnnies’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which holds an annual Kids Fighting Hunger meal-packing event every March, for two academic years (2020-21 and 2021-22). Wozniak also helped organize a swim meet for local Special Olympians in Spring 2022 in Collegeville.

Back home, Wozniak volunteered to coach 2ndand 3rd-grade youth football for the Armstrong Cooper Youth Football Association.

The Johnnies (10-2, 7-1 MIAC) won their fourth-consecutive conference championship - an MIAC-record 36th title overall - and made their 32nd postseason appearance (28th in Division III) in 2022.

Bethel offensive lineman Travis Sinclair invited to Minnesota Vikings rookie mini-camp EAGAN, Minn. – Bethel University offensive guard Travis Sinclair has been invited to participate in the Minnesota Vikings’ rookie mini-camp later this month, the Royals announced over the weekend.

Sinclair (Rogers, Minn.) wrapped up his collegiate playing career last December after helping lead Bethel to the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs. Sinclair started all 13 games for the Royals as a senior in 2022 and did not allow a sack all season. He received First Team All-America honors from both the Associated Press and American Football Coaches Association for his play on the field last fall, and added Academic All-MIAC and Academic All-District honors for his work in the classroom over the winter. Sinclair was also inducted into the National Football Foundation’s Hampshire Honor Society in April, which is comprised of senior college football players from all

division of the NCAA, NAIA, and sprint football who maintain a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers.

With his mini-camp invite, Sinclair becomes the fourth former MIAC football player to reach the NFL ranks since last year. Former Saint John’s offensive tackle Ben Bartch has started 17 games along the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offensive line since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft; former St. Thomas pass-catcher Nick Guggemos joined the Green Bay Packers as a practice squad signee at the tight end position last November and re-signed with the team on a futures contract in January; and former Concordia wide receiver Brandon Zylstra began the 2022 season with the Carolina Panthers before signing with the Detroit Lions’ practice squad last October.

Sometimes heat is the hardest hitter on the field

Welcome to another football season! The best season of all. The time of hard work and preparation for a successful season. This is the time of year that every football fan has hope and optimism for their favorite team. As an athlete, this is the time of the year your body feels the best, different than later in the season when we have bumps, bruises, aches and pains from the game the week before. I am excited thinking about it starting again…the football season.

My background is in sports medicine and orthopedic physical therapy. I work at St Cloud Orthopedics which is an outpatient clinic full of medical providers that are motivated to help patients get back to their best self from injury prevention to post surgical. We have a team of physicians, PA’s, nurses, physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, athletic trainers and occupational therapists to provide the highest quality care available. Patients come to see us from all over central MN. We work closely with the athletes from the surrounding area high schools and colleges to keep them on the field. I also am an adjunct professor at the College of St Benedicts/ St John’s University. Everyday, I have the privilege to serve and improve the lives of people that I treat in the clinc or teach in the classroom.

Like last season, I will have a column in each issue on different sports medicine topics relating to our passion….football.

This week, the words that have been on every news station and discussed with every patient. “Is it hot enough for you out there?” In this article, I would like to review heat related illnesses and steps to take to avoid them.

1. Exertional heat Cramps Signs noted in athlete are muscle twitching, cramping and spasms. Especially in the lower leg muscles. The treatment recommended is fluids, stretching, massage, ice. Calcium, sodium and potassium intake are also recommended.

2. Exertional heat exhaustion This is more serious. The athlete demonstrates excessive thirst, dry

mouth, dizziness, headaches, fatigue, weakness and lack of mental alertness.

The athlete will seem disoriented, have minimal urine output and increased body temperature. Treatment is removal of the athlete to cooler environment, replenish fluids and monitor closely.

3. Exertional heatstroke This is a medical emergency. The athlete usually collapses due to exhaustion, vertigo, and overheating. The athlete may have minimal sweating noted and pale appearance. Rapid pulse and elevated respiration are clues to the seriousness of this trauma. Medical emergency protocol should be implemented immediately.

sure to avoid heat related illness is hydration. Water should be consumed not just before, during and after activities but consumption should begin 24 hours before. Drinking fluids every few hours throughout the day improve absorption. In addition to water, sports drinks should be consumed to replenish electrolytes and sodium. The easiest way to make sure you are hydrated enough is to check the color of your urine, it should be clear to light yellow.

One last note, meet and become familiar with your sports medicine training staff. They are there to make sure your season is as successful as it can be by keeping you healthy and out of the training room. Introduce yourself to them, discuss previous injuries and how they healed or are healing. They may want to create a treatment plan to keep you healthy. They may address muscle weaknesses by adding some exercises or lack of flexibility by adding specific individual dynamic stretching.

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Bemidji State tops NSIC Football Preseason Poll BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Bemidji State University was selected by the league coaches as the preseason favorite in the NSIC for 2023. The Beavers received four first place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team) and amassed 131 points, six points ahead of Minnesota State, which was second with 125 points and five first place votes.

Wayne State was third with 114 points while Augustana was fourth with 112 points; both WSC and AUGIE garnered two first place votes.

In 2023, NSIC football will consist of 13 teams with each team playing 10 conference games over an 11 week schedule. The NSIC will award an overall champion based on win percentage in the 10 NSIC contests. Ties will not be broken for the overall champions.
