a message from the president “O Sovereign Lord, you are God. Your words are trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant. Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant that it may continue forever in your sight”
— 2 Samuel 7:28
H
ome. This special word warms our hearts. Over the past several months, Marsha and I have renovated and moved our family into a home in Longview. I had commuted nearly 60 miles each way during the past two years to keep a promise to my family to allow both of our daughters to complete their high school years in the place they long considered to be home. Over the past year, many have worked diligently to provide a new home for our LeTourneau University School of Aeronautical Science. Hours of work and prayer have gone into procuring, planning and preparing this space to suit our needs and the needs of our students. God has blessed that endeavor as we began classes in the new Paul and Betty Abbott Aviation Center that you see pictured here in this issue of the NOW magazine. Airframe & Powerplant, Flight and Air Traffic Control programs can all be found in the new Abbott Aviation Center. This fall marks the first time in more than 60 years that the entire School of Aeronautical Science is together, all in one location that it can call home. The benefits are pervasive. Students interested in aviation will have more opportunity to engage with their professors and classmates in a professional environment where, unlike on our main campus, they can see, hear and smell airplanes take off and land every day. Faculty can network and work more closely together in a collegial environment, instead of being separated into four and one-half different buildings at two separate locations. The Abbott Center also provides spaces that open opportunities to do things never done at LETU, such as hosting conferences which bring aviation professionals and our students together. LETU’s School of Aeronautical Science is now poised to handle up to 500 students with five different aviation-related degrees and nine concentrations, making us comparable to the nation’s best aviation schools. Join us at the dedication of the Abbott Aviation Center, LeTourneau University’s newest location, on Thursday, November 5th, or visit www.letu.edu/abbott to learn more. The Lunsford family has a new home to enjoy. LeTourneau University’s School of Aeronautical Science has a new home to grow into. But the home I eagerly anticipate is the everlasting Home our trustworthy God has promised. I pray we will be found diligently building this university when He finally calls us Home. n

eTourneau University’s School of Aeronautical Science moved this summer into the new Paul and Betty Abbott Aviation Center, located at the East Texas Regional Airport, which is about seven miles away from the main campus in South Longview. The renovated 55,500-square-foot facility brings the school’s aviation programs entirely into one location for the first time in nearly six decades. A vintage 1947 Cessna 140 hangs from the ceiling in the expansive Grand Hall. The airplane was donated by Roger Brake. His son, Jim, is on LETU’s Alumni Council. LETU graduates have long made a difference in mission organizations, airlines, and corporate travel around the world. Nearly 275 students and over 30 faculty and staff are using the facility this fall. The new space is the largest facility to be added to LeTourneau University since the construction and 2007 opening of the S.E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center at the university’s main campus. In the past few years, LETU has increased the breadth of its programs with new concentrations in mission and military aviation, as well as the addition of a new air traffic control program, approved by the FAA.

at LeTourneau University Written By Phil Rispin
R
G. LeTourneau started LeTourneau Technical Institute in the post-war 1940s to provide education for young veterans returning after serving overseas in WWII. Seven miles away, LeTourneau also owned an airplane hangar at what was then known as Gregg County Airport (now East Texas Regional Airport). LeTourneau kept A-26 bombers that had been converted for use as corporate aircraft. He was one of the first business executives to make extensive use of corporate aircraft in his business and ministry travels.
In 1956, LeTourneau Technical Institute added air craft maintenance to its growing list of offerings. From restoring aircraft to flying condition came a newly formed flying club. By 1958, maintenance students began working on their flight credentials as a sideline to their main purpose for being in Longview—to become airplane mechanics.
10 | NOW Magazine | Fall 2009
LeTourneau Technical Institute became LeTourneau College in 1961. When R.G. LeTourneau bought a new Lear Jet in 1965, the program at the airport ended. However, the flying club continued informally, eventually growing into a flight school. The aircraft maintenance program at the college moved to campus and eventually into the metal aeronautical science buildings where they stayed for several decades.
In 1971, LeTourneau College offered its first associate’s degree in Aviation Science which included flight training. In June of 1975, the flight training program leased space and airplanes from Flight Specialties located in what was known as the North Hangar (pictured at right).
In 1984, LeTourneau built its own facility for flight training on the west side of the airport which served the school for 25 years. LETU’s aviation program has experienced steady growth over the past two decades. The Marty Donner Engine Test Facility that opened in 2006 was the last aviation-related building built on the main campus. A similar facility at the new Abbott Center is also named in Donner’s honor.
In Fall 2007, the university became aware that a newly constructed building at the airport was available. In June 2008, LETU acquired the building and initiated remodeling to provide 55,500 square feet of classroom, lab and administrative space, including a 10,000-squarefoot hangar. The new facility opened in Fall 2009 as the Paul and Betty Abbott Aviation Center. n

hen Paul Abbott came to what was then LeTourneau College in 1968, he thought he might someday want to be a missionary. Four decades later, he sees how God has multiplied his and his wife’s impact— more than if they had gone to the mission field themselves. The new Paul and Betty Abbott Aviation Center at East Texas Regional Airport is named in honor of this couple whose faithfulness throughout the years has made a lasting impact on LeTourneau University and its aviation students. “Every institution has a few people who embody the mission and vision of the organization,” said LETU President Dale A. Lunsford. “Paul and Betty Abbott are just such people. Their actions, their commitment of time and resources, and their godly character make an eternal impact for Christ—all of which make them the perfect choice for this recognition. Their names and their witness, we believe, will inspire others to give and by doing so inspire students to serve in every workplace and in every nation.” Today, Paul and Betty own Covington Aircraft Engines, Inc., in Okmulgee, Okla. It is a world leader in aircraft engine overhaul and repair, specializing in Pratt & Whitney radial and turbine engines. The company also installs and tests engines in addition to providing parts to customers all over the world. When Paul graduated in 1971 with his degree in aviation technology, he and Betty with their young son, Luke, moved to Oklahoma where Paul went to work for a mission organization. The Abbotts were blessed within a few years with another son, Aaron, and a daughter, Cassandra. “Betty and I had dedicated our lives to the Lord during a mission conference at LETU,” Paul said. “We thought about mission work and had found a small organization at the airport at Okmulgee where I would run the maintenance end of it. I was supposed to come on faith, because they weren’t paying anything. “They gave me a job with the city part time at the airport to make money refueling aircraft, sweeping the hangar and mowing grass,” Paul said. “I was paid something like $1.27 per hour with no benefits for 35 hours a week. I was making about $45 a week and still paying on Luke’s hospital and doctor bills, as well as on our student loans.” 12 | NOW Magazine | Fall 2009
Then Bob Covington came to Oklahoma and started a new company. “God opened the doors for me to work with Bob,” Paul said. “I helped get the shop set up and FAA approved in 1972. I learned a lot from him. In 1975, Bob asked if I wanted to buy the business. At the time, we had six employees.” After praying about what to do, Paul and Betty purchased the company in 1975. Long gas lines at the pumps in those days signaled lean times, but it strengthened their faith. “We went a few weeks without selling anything,” Paul said. “We had bought a business when I was 29 and inexperienced, but God taught us to trust Him. After a few weeks, we sold an engine. The business started picking up, and from 1976 through 1981, we expanded, adding a new building every year and hiring and training new employees.” Today, the company has 60 employees in two locations, and it exports nearly half of its engines out of the country. From that very first year of owning the company, their godly character was clearly evident in the way they conducted their business, providing opportunities for their employees to come to know Christ and grow spiritually through regular chapel services, offered in much the same way that LETU founder R.G. LeTourneau did in his day. “God kept blessing our business, and He enabled us to support others who served on the mission field,” Paul said. “The more we gave, the more the business grew, because we were using the money for Him. I hesitate talking about it, because I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging on ourselves, because I’m bragging on God. “Sometimes new employees are startled to hear me say God owns our house, our cars, this business, and that we are just here managing it,” Paul said. “I believe God owns it all. And with that in mind, I try to be a better manager. I know we’ve got to ask Him for wisdom to manage it in the right way to bring Him honor and glory.” The Abbotts have consistently and generously contributed financial support to efforts at LETU such as the Marty Donner Engine Test Facility, NIFA student flight competitions and scholarships for students, including those pursuing careers in mission aviation. They also contributed aircraft engines and parts for use by LETU’s School of Aeronautical Science. Paul has participated in a real and substantial way on the
Aeronautical Science Advisory Committee, serving as an inaugural member and as its chairman. He has offered his company’s expertise to the university by providing Pratt & Whitney PT-6 engine training to the university’s turbine engine instructor. Also, with Betty’s support, Paul has made even a broader impact on the university by serving as a trustee since 2002. “Attending LeTourneau helped me to grow spiritually and academically,” Paul said. “I believe LeTourneau helped build my character, and I appreciated the way the instructors took a special interest in each student. The devotional at the beginning of each class was not only an encouragement, but it also helped prepare us to learn during our class time.” With the help of friends like the Abbotts, incredible gains have been made in LETU’s aviation programs. LETU graduates have long made a difference in mission organizations, airlines, and in corporate travel around the world. In the past few years, LETU has increased the breadth of its programs with new concentrations in mission and military aviation. In addition, the FAA has authorized LETU as the first college in Texas to offer an air traffic control program. So what do they think about their name on the new Paul and Betty Abbott Aviation Center? “We feel honored and humbled by it,” Paul said. “I never dreamed we’d see our name on a building. Yet while it is an honor that the university would do that, we feel that if we can share our testimony, then God will be honored for His faithfulness in bringing us through.” n

God’s Faithfulness Revealed

s a working adult with a husband and two teenage daughters, Sandra Taylor went back to college in January 2002 to complete her bachelor’s degree in business at LeTourneau University in Longview. She took classes one night a week, but never dreamed what she was about to learn. A month after she started the program, the sudden death of her husband changed everything. “When Ted died, I was stunned,” Sandra said. “Looking back, I know God had me at LETU for that time in my life. I could not have gone through that without the class and the professors talking to me. Their devotionals before class kept me pulled together.” Despite her deep sorrow, Sandra quickly had to face facts. She was left with a mortgage, car payments, and her daughter had torn her ACL and needed immediate surgery. “I thought about quitting, but the voice I heard was saying ‘move forward,’” Sandra said. “I would have been in a devastating depression, but God got me up every morning. I had to be strong for the girls. And I knew my classmates depended on me. “I leaned on Proverbs 3:5-6, ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding but in all your ways acknowledge Him and he will direct your paths.’ It was like a mantra for me.” During that time, Sandra started journaling, writing “Dear God” letters. “It’s the best gift I’ve ever given myself,” she said. “Through the Bible classes I took, my faith grew. Because of those classes, I began reading the Bible from front to back and began understanding the sacrifices Jesus made for me. I learned the differences in the Old Testament and the New Testament and what Jesus bridged that was missing in the Old Testament.“ Sandra says, in short, she learned of God’s faithfulness. “I had never attended a Christian school before,” she said.

Sandra T aylor Sandra had attended Temple Junior College right out of high school in 1977, later adding to her class hours with courses at Stephen F. Austin State University and Kilgore College. But Sandra knew she needed to complete her business degree, if not so much for her employer as for herself. “I always made a big issue of not having my degree,” she said. “It really didn’t seem to matter as much to others around me. They knew what kind of worker I was. But it always held me back. After I walked across that stage, I realized the degree wasn’t the prize. It was the journey.“ Taylor finished her degree in December 2003. She works as a project leader at Texas Workforce Centers, which provides employment services and supports economic development. Her two daughters, Kristina “Tina,” 28, is a certified public accountant in Houston. Her daughter, Laura, 25, works for an attorney in New York City. “When all is said and done, it was God working through the professors, classmates and my family who pulled me through,” Sandra said. “I’ve had more success in the past seven years than I have had in my entire life. And I trust Him for every day.” n

Safety in the skies Written By Janet Ragland Photographed by Randy Mallory and Janet Ragland

S
afety ranks supreme at LeTourneau University’s School of Aeronautical Science. This steadfast commitment to safety has inspired ongoing research by Assistant Professor and Assistant Chief Flight Instructor Bruce A. Chase. Currently, he is conducting a study to determine whether aviation students trained in new “glass cockpit” airplanes can transition safely into airplanes with traditional “steam gauges” without having had specific training in both types of aircraft. Chase has taught at his alma mater since 1992, completing his master’s degree in aeronautical science from Embry Riddle in 2005. Chase has seen many changes in LETU’s program including advances in technology like the glass cockpits. But the commitment to safety first has never wavered. LETU is one of the first universities in the country to use new glass cockpit airplanes. In 2005, all of the school’s new Cessna Skyhawks were outfitted with the state-of-the-art glass cockpits. “I don’t know of any school with as high a percentage of glass cockpit airplanes as LETU has,” Chase said. “A lot of university schools have a few, but the ratio with traditional cockpits is not nearly as high as at LETU. However, we do training on both anyway.” Chase said airlines went to glass cockpits in the late 1980s and early 1990s. “At that time, the FAA had some concerns whether the airlines’ transition to glass from steam gauges would be smooth, and it was,” he said. Chase observed that the FAA has no regulations on students training in a glass cockpit and flying in another. The most critical difference between the two cockpits is that the glass cockpit has two attitude indicators, while the traditional cockpit only has one. When Chase considered that flying the traditional cockpit without the attitude indicator is a very different skill, he began his new research project. “I’m studying the paradigm of students trained in glass, then going into a traditional cockpit and whether they will be able to transition safely,” he said. In 2008 Chase won a $5,000 research grant and a newly refurbished 1977 Cessna Cardinal four-seater airplane from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association “Catch-a-Cardinal” sweepstakes. Since 1939, the AOPA has represented the interests of general aviation pilots. Two-thirds of the nations’ pilots are members. Chase used the grant to continue his re-
search, but also has participated in a year-long Title III grant-writing course that culminated in writing a grant to the FAA for the pilot study. For his initial study, Chase studied one student in each lab session who had a private pilot certification on glass cockpit. The lab uses a traditional cockpit. He studied the students with all of the instruments working correctly, then Chase simulated some failures in the instrumentation to determine how the student pilots would respond. “With everything working OK, the pilots did fine, but I found most made errors when I failed the attitude indicator on them,” Chase said. “Every year there are pilots killed in accidents with a misinterpretation of the attitude indicator. Other gauges in the cockpit are historical, they tell you what just happened, but the attitude indicator is right now.” Chase said sometimes an attitude indicator can continue to look as though it’s working but give false information leading to vertigo in pilots who lose direction. “Those kinds of mistakes kill pilots,” he said. “We do this research in a flight simulator, so the worst case scenario as far as getting hurt would be if someone tripped on a cord.” Safely on the ground, the simulator records the flights and matches the instrumentation readings with the reactions of the pilot. The initial study included a sample of eight students, and Chase found most students were able to maintain control, although not accuracy. This fall and spring, Chase is expanding his research in cooperation with the Louisiana Tech flight program. He will study the performance of LETU pilots, trained in glass cockpits, as they react to Tech’s simulator that still uses steam gauges. Next, he will compare their performance with that of Louisiana Tech pilots who have been trained exclusively on steam gauges. The research will show differences in the two programs and will give valuable insight into training students for flying aircraft with both kinds of instruments. Chase says he expects both groups of students to struggle, but that they will gain valuable experience through the process. “When flight instruments are in different places in the cockpit, then it matters,” Chase said, “especially in an emergency.” Though passengers might be oblivious to the difference in training, Chase knows his research can benefit his flight students, and the collaboration can only make both programs stronger.
n LeTourneau University is one of the first universities in the country to use airplanes outfitted with new glass cockpit display panels, shown inset opposite page on right, instead of having airplanes with only the older, traditional steam gauge cockpits, shown opposite page at far left.

Christopher Becker Memorial End
D
ick and Marsha Becker of Upland, Ind., sent their son, Christopher, to LETU for college because they wanted him to attend a Christian university, and he wanted to fly airplanes. Dick is a pilot for Southern Gospel singers Bill and Gloria Gaither. Christopher had spent lots of time in the cockpit with his dad teaching him. “He loved to fly,” Dick said. “Christopher was flying from the day he was eligible. The day he turned 16, he flew his first solo, and at 17, he got his private pilot certificate.” Marsha said almost all of Christopher’s high school friends attended Taylor University near their home, but after coming to LeTourneau for a weekend and staying in the LAS house on campus, Christopher went home knowing LeTourneau was where he wanted to be. “He knew that was the place for him and that the LAS house was where he wanted to live,” Marsha said. “He pledged LAS in his second semester. He loved LeTourneau. He was in his element and fit in well. He loved his friends, and they loved him.” Marsha said when Christopher would call home each Sunday night, he would tell his parents stories of some of the daring deeds he and his friends had done that week. “Christopher was very energetic, and he and his buddies in LAS were always involved in extracurricular activities,” she said. “I was always happy to know about them after the fact.” Christopher earned his bachelor’s degree in aeronautical science with a flight concentration in the spring of 2001. That summer, he flew often with his dad, being paid as a part-time co-pilot. “Christopher loved college, and when all of his friends went their different ways after graduation, it was tough,” Dick said. “He used to tell me he felt the best time of his life was over.”

Top: Christopher Becker and Lambda Alpha Sigma graduates enjoyed their graduation party in 2001. Bottom: Christopher took his parents, Marsha and Dick Becker, flying during a visit to LeTourneau. Since Christopher had always been the adventurous type, it didn’t surprise the Beckers when he and a buddy left in August on a six-week trek through Europe before having to find fulltime jobs and go to work. Two-and-a-half weeks into the trip, they received a call. Christopher was gone. He had fallen to his death while free climbing on the side of a mountain. The Beckers returned to LeTourneau the next month to attend a memorial service on campus for their son. They knew Christopher’s love for LeTourneau University. They also understood the value of a Christian education and the costs of getting an aviation degree. With the help of others, the Beckers founded the Christopher Becker Memorial Endowed Scholarship to bless future students who, like their son, love to fly. n
