GEMINI

B777 Cabin Day View Gemini Concept Seat

Lead Industrial Designer Based in USA Project Duration: September 2013 to April 2014 Gemini is a concept developed to compete in the high-end business class seating market segment. The concept was conceived in September 2013 and Lito was on a team of 4, 2 industrial designers and 2 engineers, who were charged with creating a full 3D model to be ready to be built for a mock-up. This concept, and the mock-up, were revealed at the 2014 Aircraft Interiors Exposition in Hamburg, Germany. The concept instantly gained acclaim and had drawn interest from multiple high-end airlines. Its goal was to achieve the same passenger count within the cabin as the best-selling reverse-herringbone seats on the market but provide a 25% larger, and squarer bed. The largest challenge when designing an entirely new concept was balancing the desires of the airlines, who are purchasing the product, and the passenger who is using them.

Design Process Gemini was chosen as the representative concept for out High-End Business Class market segment through a thorough vote by the Hamburg Show team. This concept has a very spatially intricate design, where the beds are increased in surface area by overlapping both at the feet and at the arms. The biggest challenge was maintaining the large rectangular bed while including all necessary amenities such as the tray table, literature pocket, and cocktail table. In order to achieve this they had to think outside of the existing precedents flying today, and create something entirely new. Most airline seats try to hide all amenities behind doors to create smooth surfaces, Lito fought and argued that if well designed, the amenities could add to the easy usability and understanding of the passenger, rather than detract. It was also a challenge to find a way to provide all passengers with direct aisle access and companion travel, but this was fortunately all achieved.

FUSIO

LL Lounge

Design Process Fusio is a concept developed to compete in the high-density first class market. Many airlines are moving away from first-class products because they are very low density and the cabin does not consistently fill with first class passengers. This product is intended to give the airlines a higher density product that they can market for a lower price, luring more people into the first class cabin.

Seat Style Sketches

The poster on the right is an example of how the product was presented at a meeting between all the Zodiac divisions in order to decide whether or not this was the new concept we wanted to present at the International Airline Show in Hamburg, Germany. Having only been with the company for 2 months, Lito was tasked with creating a comprehensive concept board detailing all the key information. At this phase all that had been created was a rudimentary 3D model to ensure the arrangement of the seats worked within the airplane cabin. This meeting is where it was decided that out of over 15 concepts presented by different teams this was going to represent the High-Density First Class segment. From this point on Lito joined the team for the High-End Business Class product as one of 2 industrial designers, the other one being located in France. This project was Gemini. Below is an image of the final product. Though Lito was not on the team that made the final 3D data for the mock up, it retained the feel that Lito was a part of proposing at the very beginning of the design process.

Hamburg 2015 Trim and Finish Selection The beginning of the trim and finish process began with a thorough analysis of material trends in various industries including automotive and luxury goods. Using the trends that had been identified Lito created comprehensive schemes of materials and how they might be applied, found existing materials that apply to each scheme and create palettes. Three final schemes were selected to be presented at Zodiac Aerospace headquarters in France. There, Lito presented all three schemes along with physical material samples and the final scheme was selected by the vice president of marketing. The scheme “Jora” was selected to be applied to all Zodiac Aerospace Seat products that will be presented at the Hamburg 2015 show. Laranja

Laranja is about high-end comfort. Chic and contemporary, this theme will make he more technology forward traveler comfortable, but still soft and welcoming of all travelers. High contrast black and white materials with a very bright pop of color.

Dunya is earth in Turkish. Dunya contrasts light whites and Grey to deep neutral blue and bright warm copper. The atmosphere is that of calming earth tones, intended to be comfortable, but contemporary. The textiles transition from a rigid short-line pattern in economy to a broken line pattern in business, to a wavy lined pattern in first class. The lines are a language that unified the seats, along with the color palette, but the pattern evolves between the classes.

Jora means autumn rain in Hebrew. It is about a humble luxury. The atmosphere is light, natural, and calming. Light woods and pastel colors are a staple in the homes of today’s luxury homes and offices. These colors and texture are modest, yet sophisticated. With the addition of patterns derived from organic forms or weaving patterns, these colors could truly come to life and provide a beautiful, relaxing atmosphere.

Headphone Hook The challenge was to create a headphone hook that would hold the headphones in the event of turbulence and be easy to use by the passenger. This bistable hinge design is very successful and more importantly, relatively easy to manufacture using a metal extrusion process with a little machining. This headphone hook was the second patent Lito has been a part of.

Cirrus Button Design This button, though 2” at it’s widest will be the new standard design for Zodiac’s best selling product, the Cirrus seat. This project brought me into very close collaboration with engineers and manufacturers and Lito was able to see this part from sketch, to production.

Button Iterations Through a variety of iterations of the button design we explored form, texture, and ways to indicate where the button should be pushed in new and subtler ways. By working with the engineers at SouthCo who would manufacture the button, we were able to come to the final design, shown below. Version one is for single latch buttons such as the IFE monitor, and version 2 is for double-latch buttons such as any stowage compartments.

Lobby Lighting Fixture Along her work on the products Lito also had the ability to design the central, large lighting fixture for Zodiac Seat Shell’s lobby. The task was to elegantly hang 3 pendant lamps from the 30 foot ceiling. Lito was able to follow through from sketch, to 3d modeling, to 3d Printing, painting and chrome plating, as well as installation. 1. Design in CATIA and sketching 2. 3D Printing and Gluing halves together 3. Sanding and finishing surfaces 4. Chrome plated sphere- Dealing with a defect 5. Installation process 6.
