Nicole Franchy El desafío de los caminos establecidos The challenge of beaten tracks La artista visual, Nicole Franchy, propone un nuevo lenguaje para el imaginario de la geografía. Desanda mapas y los vuelve a asociar para contar una nueva historia. Lo impensado cobra forma y se amiga con lo desconocido, en un recorrido magistral de técnicas y paisajes.

Visual artist Nicole Franchy proposes a new language for the imagery of geography. She retraces maps and unites them again to tell a new story. The unexpected takes form and befriends the unknown, in a masterful journey of techniques and landscapes.

ensar en el momento en que las ciudades que transitamos fueron diseñadas, no es lo más frecuente en la naturalización de nuestra vertiginosa cotidianidad. Circulamos lo dispuesto y olvidamos que las direcciones a las que nos dirigimos fueron pensadas y estructuradas para ello. Pero Nicole Franchy, artista nativa de Perú, que actualmente reside en Nueva York, no sólo se pregunta qué fue lo que determinó las decisiones para cada itinerario, sino que utiliza la técnica del collage para abrir un debate que pone en cuestionamiento los diferentes puntos de vista que organizaron la geografía mundial.

hinking about the moment in which the cities we pass through were designed isn’t very common in the naturalization of our dizzying daily lives. We walk through what’s arranged and forget that the addresses we go to, were thought out and structured to be walked.

However, Peruvian artist, Nicole Franchy, who currently resides in New York, not only questions what determined the decisions for each itinerary; but uses collage to open a debate questioning the different points of view that arranged the world geography.

Her search dates back to her adolescence, when she studied visual arts and her family circle, an architect for a father and an artist for a mother,

plástica, la invitaba a vivir y crear sus propios mundos. Así como propone nuevas conexiones en su obra, también amplía sus propias categorías como artista visual. El término no puede ser más acorde, sus trabajos exceden de manera abismal el oficio de fotógrafo, no por no cumplir a la perfección con su rol, sino porque no le fue suficiente y encontró en el collage una manera de expresarse más allá del instante preciso.

encouraged her to experience and create her own worlds. She proposes new connections in her work, and broadens her own standing as a visual artist. The term couldn’t be more accurate. Her work vastly exceeds the role of photographer, not because she doesn’t perfectly fit the role, but rather because it wasn’t enough for her, and with collage, she found a way to express herself beyond the precise moment.

Además de haber nacido en un hogar de artistas, su motivación se alimenta también de los trabajos del noeyorkino Fred Wilson, y el alemán Hans Peter Feldman, ambos definidos como artistas visuales. “Me intereso también por autores como Svetlana Boym. Ella pone en palabras análisis de la nostalgia, como un síntoma de nuestra época que conectan biografía nacional y autoconstrucción personal en el siglo XXI”. Así Franchy refleja un estudio profundo y una investigación que utiliza fuentes diversas para fortalecer su mensaje.

Besides having been born in a home of artists, her motivation is also fed by the work of New Yorker Fred Wilson and Hans Peter Feldman from Germany; who are both defined as visual artists. The same happens with works of literature: “I’m also interested in authors such as Svetlana Boym.

She puts analyses of nostalgia into words, like a symptom of our times that connects our national biography and personal self-construction on the XXI century.” Through this, Franchy reflects a deep study and investigation that uses different sources to strengthen her message.

En sus inicios se dedicó a tomar fotos en diferentes zonas de Lima, y esa experiencia fue la que motivó la necesidad de implementar el montaje digital como una forma de conectar lugares geográficos impensados. “Uno de los resultados de esa búsqueda fue Sólo Acceso A Propiedad, una serie de fotomontajes digitales que ponían en contacto espacialidades que estaban muy lejos una de la otra en una sola imagen y que, muchas veces, resultaban contradictorios. Tal vez a primera vista parecían familiares, pero acercándote a la imagen podías darte cuenta de que eran lugares socialmente diversos que convivían en una misma ciudad”, expresa Nicole

In the beginning, her work consisted of taking photographs in different areas of Lima. That experience was what motivated the need to implement digital editing as a way to connect unexpected geographic locations. “One of the results of that search was Sólo Acceso A Propiedad (Property Access Only). A series of digital photomontages, which brought far-apart spaces together in one single image that, often, turned out to be contradictory. Perhaps at first sight they seemed familiar, but as you approach the image, you could realize that they were socially-diverse places that coexisted in the same city,” states Nicole.

Franchy participó en numerosas exposiciones en Europa, Estados Unido y Latinoamérica. Permanentemente se encuentra en contacto con diversas culturas y eso no ha hecho más que enriquecer su trabajo agudo sobre la cartografía mundial. Pero las investigaciones que realiza para llegar a sus obras exceden su propia experiencia, y recurre no sólo a imágenes de archivo, sino a uno de los más interesantes documentos de viaje: las postales. Así como selecciona fragmentos visuales para armar un collage, piensa de la misma manera los textos dedicatorios que recuerdan estadías vacacionales

Franchy participated in numerous exhibitions in Europe, United States and Latin America. She is constantly in contact with diverse cultures, which hasn’t done anything but enrich her clever work on world cartography. However, the research she conducts to carry out her work surpasses her own experience. She does not only turn to archival images, but also to one of the most interesting travel documents: postcards. Just as she selects visual fragments to build a collage, she applies the same approach to dedicatory texts that remind us of Many changes, 2013, impresión digital sobre papel de algodón, 115 x 86 cm.

“En Many Changes, hay una frase que forma parte de la obra y dice: “Muchos cambios ocurrieron desde que visitaste este lugar, y creo que gran parte de su belleza natural ha desaparecido desde entonces". Más allá de lo anecdótico del comentario, o de lo que haya significado al momento de su escritura, su inscripción en el documento me interesa desde lo que estas frases activan en un nuevo contexto”, cuenta.

vacations or simply mimic a loved one to incorporate them into her work. “In Many Changes, there was a phrase that was part of the work and says: “Many changes have occurred since you just visited this place and a great deal of its natural beauty has I guess disappeared.”

Apart from the anecdotic of the comment, or what it may have meant when it was written, its inscription on the document intrigues me because of what these phrases trigger in a new context,” she says.

Lo mismo sucedió desde la imagen con Infiernillo, su última serie, que parte de uno de los relatos del explorador británico Thomas J. Hutchinson, que dentro de sus relatos de viajes acerca del Perú del siglo XIX describe un lugar en Los Andes centrales del Perú llamado El Infiernillo, que contaba con una demografía elevada y accidentada en donde el inglés Henry Meiggs construye un puente y describe una catarata gigantesca que corre por unas paredes rocosas y se refiere a ella como la “pequeña Niágara”. La artista toma este relato y lo reconstruye haciendo collages usando postales de paisajes europeos que luego agranda en un intento de recrear imaginariamente el infiernillo de Hutchinson y su mirada sobre el Perú.

The same thing happened in the image with Infernillo, her latest series. It departs from the stories of the British explorer, Thomas J. Hutchinson, whose travel tales about Peru in the 19th century describe a place in the Peruvian central Andes called El Infiernillo. It had an elevated and uneven demography where the Englishman, Henry Meiggs, built a bridge and described a giant waterfall that runs off rocky hillsides. He referred to it as “little Niagara”. The artist takes this story and reconstructs it by making collages with postcards of European landscapes, which are later expanded in an attempt to imaginarily recreate Hutchinson’s infiernillo and his view on Peru.

Franchy, realiza un juego imaginario proponiendo diálogos inexistentes entre zonas que, sin quererlo tienen líneas y estructuras que los comunican en una continuidad inesperada. Tiempo, espacio y recuerdo se entrecruzan en la potencia de la obra de la artista que, sin lugar a dudas, aporta un registro histórico que abre preguntas y sin pretender una respuesta acabada, intenta resolver con su propia mirada. La obra de Nicole transporta e invita a re-cartografiar las coordenadas del espectador y dar una nueva mirada al material de archivo que recolecta.

By posing fictional dialogues between areas that unintentionally have lines and structures that communicate them in an unexpected continuity, Franchy plays an imaginary game. Time, space and memory are overlapped in the potency of the work of the artist that, undoubtedly, provides a historic record that raises questions and tries to solve them with its own point of view, without seeking a definite answer. Nicole’s work transports and invites us to remap the viewer’s coordinates and provide a new perspective to the archival material she collects.
