Ce projet de voyage photographique à Chandigarh remonte aux années 1980, époque à laquelle je photographiais les maisons Jaoul conçues par Le Corbusier aux confins des Indes. Face à l’architecture impressionnante des sites, je décidais de raconter de manière approfondie cette ville que les habitants appellent « The City Beautiful ». L’intérêt principal de ce travail fut à mon sens de montrer l’appropriation par les Indiens de cette architecture occidentale, et au‑delà la confrontation de deux cultures que tout semblait opposer.
The idea of a photo trip to Chandigarh first occurred to me in the early 1980s, when I was photographing Le Corbusier’s Maisons Jaoul. The impressive architecture of the city had its effect and I decided to deepen my approach to the story of what its inhabitants call ‘The City Beautiful’. The main point of this work, as I saw it, was to show how Indians appropriated this Western architecture, and, further, the confrontation of two cultures that seemed radically opposed. — Chandigarh, Manuel Bougot.

LADIES ROOMS AROUND THE WORLD 4’
Durant mon enfance, les toilettes sont progressivement devenues mes cachettes préférées, mes forteresses de solitude. En 1978, afin d’échapper à un dîner de remise de prix extrêmement ennuyeux donné dans la salle de bal d’un hôtel, je fis retraite dans les toilettes pour dames. Enchantée par la vision de ces femmes octogénaires en train d’ajuster leur corset et de remettre leurs faux cils, j’entrepris de photographier la camaraderie de leur danse tribale. Ainsi commença mon périple consacré à photographier des toilettes pour dames dans le monde entier – de l’Australie à la Zambie, en passant par Mumbaï, la Bosnie, Rio de Janeiro et Tel Aviv. As I grew up, bathrooms were my favorite hiding place and the one sanctuary of solitude. In 1978, to escape a boring awards dinner in a hotel ballroom, I retreated to the ladies room. Enchanted by the octogenarians adjusting their corsets and false eyelashes, I photographed the camaraderie of their tribal dance. Thus began my journey photographing in ladies rooms around the world from Australia to Zambia, Bombay to Bosnia, Rio to Tel Aviv. — Broadway Opening, Maxi Cohen.
