Les Quennevais School

Learning to be your best through excellence and enjoyment

Dear Reader,

HEADTEACHER’S REVIEW

As another Spring Term draws to a close, we are reminded in this issue of Q News how vibrant, fun, successful, and varied school life is at Les Quennevais. It has been, once again, packed full of the most extraordinary achievements from so many students, whose talent, commitment, resilience, and determination to contribute, so positively, is testament to the very special culture we cherish here.

Since January, we have celebrated incredible achievements, which began with the stunning iGCSE English and Maths results secured by a wonderful Year 11 students as they continue their final push ahead of their formal exams which will begin in earnest after Easter. We wish them the very best over the Easter period, as they will no doubt be working hard attending the many study sessions available to them in school over the holidays, offered by our staff, who are all here to help them through their final few weeks. Year 11 are an incredibly ambitious and best of all very caring group of young people, who have given so much to our school. We will be so sad to lose them next term but what a brilliant 5 years it has been with them all. Keep going everyone, it will be worth it!

A huge highlight of the term was the showstopping production of ‘Guys and Dolls’, which was an immense success on every level. To have over 150 students taking part on stage, in the orchestra and front of house is a huge endorsement to the draw of the Performing Arts at our school. We enjoyed another four-night sellout run, and the talent of our students blew everyone away, as is the norm, but it’s never taken for granted or expected. With so many friendships formed, and memories created. I hope that shows remain a firm feature of Les Quennevais in the future. It has been such a privilege to have watched our productions evolve over the years to the standard they are now. They are a source of great personal pride for me and the joy they bring is unmatched as a spectacle of school life. What a wonderful show to experience as my final one as Headteacher of this fabulous school. The entire cast did us so proud.

We welcomed a sporting superstar to our school for our annual Sports Awards this term and Patrice Evra thoroughly enjoyed his time with us all. There can be no doubt that the magic a true superstar can bring is infectious and tangible. It was wonderful to see the sheer excitement he created, and the

awe on the faces of our students who will forever be able to say they played with him and were coached by him. His messages to students in his Q&A highlighted the importance of respect, respect, respect! It was a Sports Dinner we will never forget, and an opportunity we were so delighted to be able to offer our students.

Our annual Careers Fair Day was another huge success with over 70 employers across all sectors of the Island attending and all Year Groups experiencing the day. It is a day that never fails to inspire and excite interest in our students that we build on throughout the year ahead.

A real highlight this term was our invitation to the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey. The day itself was a uniquely proud experience. To represent our school and our Island was humbling and our Year 11 students were a credit to us all. Mrs Moisan and myself will never forget the very special occasion, made all the more memorable by the fantastic company of our Year 11 students. They were ambassadors to be proud of and every single student appreciated every moment, making it all the more memorable and enjoyable.

2 Q News | Issue 19 | Spring 2024 HEADTEACHER’S REVIEW

Success has been a key theme of this term for so many students. Runners-up in the du Putron challenge, winners of the Architecture Challenge, winners of the Ports of Jersey competition, Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze in Eisteddfod entries and huge sporting success in rugby, football, hockey, and netball. It seems there is nothing that our students don’t excel in. Their ambition and the encouragement, from our staff, create the perfect culture for students to thrive and succeed at all levels.

Our House system creates additional opportunities and there has been a busy calendar of House events throughout the term. There really is something for everyone and the supportive environment in each House, where students’ achievements are celebrated, is a fundamental part of why our school is so special.

Spring Term traditionally ends with the ‘Bunny Run’. Ears at the ready and Mascots and Bunnies galore. It never ceases to make me smile that we are a school where teenagers get into disputes over who gets to wear the ‘ears’ for the Bunny Run. Priceless, endearing, and pure LQ Magic.

We welcomed the author, Peter J Murray, who gave a masterclass to our Year 7 and 8 students who loved every minute of his enthralling presentation, so much so he sold 140 copies of his latest book! A record for any visiting author, who was delighted to return the following day to judge our ‘Blake Off’ another fantastic dimension of our school, and the power of oracy at Les Quennevais.

School has felt very quiet without our wonderful Year 10 students, who have been out for two weeks on Trident work experience. We have really missed them and it has been fantastic to receive so much incredible feedback from so many employers across the Island. Our students have returned with some wonderful stories, they are walking a little bit taller, and many employers want to keep them, which is a strong endorsement of just how well they have done. Congratulations and welcome back Year 10.

Traditionally, Easter brings a sense of new beginnings and hope for the future. It is therefore rather apt that the new Headteacher of our wonderful school will have been appointed by the time you are reading this edition of Q News. I hope the Education Department will communicate the news as quickly as possible. Whilst I had no part to play in this process or the appointment, as is the norm, I know that whoever it is will be the luckiest leader in the world! To lead our community is a privilege and an honour, and I hope they will treasure and cherish the opportunity they have been given.

I wish all our readers a very happy, peaceful, and joyous Easter with your families.

Students hit the big time in Guys and Dolls

It gives me such great pleasure to reflect on our recent stunning production of the classic musical “Guys and Dolls,” featuring an impressive cast of 130 of our amazing students. From the bustling streets of New York City to the glitz of the underground gambling world, the stage came alive with vibrant performances, captivating audiences night after night.

Months of tireless rehearsals and meticulous planning culminated in an unforgettable theatrical experience. From the leads to the ensemble, each member of the cast poured their heart and soul into bringing this beloved story to life. I would like to thank the students for getting behind our choice of musical having prepared the most wonderful performances, complete with decks of cards and iconic trilby hats! This is when I knew this show was going to be something special. From the auditions, and all the way through rehearsals, the cast have continued to impress me with their passion and dedication to their rehearsals and performances, as well as their kindness and enjoyment that they have found in spending so many hours with each other. There is a reason the performing arts is so special, and can’t be replaced or ignored; it is a vehicle for magic in young people.

The production boasted a diverse array of talents, showcasing not only acting prowess but also impressive singing and dancing abilities. From the energetic and unforgettable Dexter as Nathan Detroit, to the vivacious Laila as Adelaide, to the stunning romantic leads of Ruby and Perry as the iconic Sarah Brown and Sky Masterson, each character was brought to life with depth and authenticity, drawing the audience into the world of Damon Runyon’s iconic characters.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the production was the sheer scale of the cast. With 130 students involved, the stage was teeming with energy and enthusiasm, creating a dynamic atmosphere that electrified the audience from start to finish.

From the smallest cameo roles to the show-stopping numbers, every performer had their moment to shine, contributing to the overall success of the production.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of staff worked tirelessly to ensure that every aspect of the production ran smoothly. From costume design to set construction, their hard work and attention to detail were evident in every scene, transporting the audience to the bustling streets of 1950s New York City.

Audiences were treated to a night of laughter, romance, and unforgettable musical numbers, as the cast delivered standout performances that left a lasting impression. From the rousing rendition of “Luck Be a Lady” to the poignant duet of “I’ll Know,” each song was delivered with passion and precision, earning thunderous applause from the audience.

As the final curtain fell on this remarkable production of “Guys and Dolls,” it was clear that the months of hard work and dedication had paid off. With its talented cast, stunning performances, and vibrant energy, the show left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to witness it, proving once again the power of theatre to inspire, entertain, and unite us all.

I’m Annie, the youngest of the Thackeray sisters who attended Les Quennevais, and I’m now 23 years old. After I left Les Quennevais I moved to JCG to complete my A levels, then went to study Criminology at Durham University. Despite the impact of Covid on my three years at Durham, I managed to continue my passion for netball, playing in the BUCS league, which was regularly followed by a lively social. After graduating from Durham, I decided that I wasn’t quite ready to delve into the working world, so I moved to Barcelona to pursue a Master’s degree in International Security at IBEI University.

Leaving the warm weather behind, I returned to Jersey in July 2023, savouring one last university summer of freedom before deciding it was time to relieve my parents of their biggest financial burden. I managed to land myself a job in the Financial intelligence Unit (FIU) in October, allowing me to contribute to the global fight against financial crime.

Alumni InterviewAnnie Thackeray

Which years were you at Les Quennevais?

2012 - 2017.

What was your biggest challenge at school?

Maths. Most definitely my weakest subject. Luckily, neither of the dissertations I had to write required any calculations.

What was your greatest achievement at school?

Receiving the sporting achievement award in my final year.

Song/band/album that defined your school years?

Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Catfish and the Bottlemen. Still waiting for Liam and Noel to reunite.

Which aspects of life at Les Quennevais helped you become the person you are today?

I think the range of subjects and extracurricular activities offered at LQ allowed me to explore my interests and discover my strengths. I learned valuable lessons in teamwork, leadership, and time management, which are skills that have been crucial in my path since leaving. Moreover, the teachers who supported and influenced me, encouraging my ambitions and motivating me to succeed have played a part in shaping the person I am today.

Favourite lesson or activity?

PE, undoubtedly the best lesson, taught by Jonesy and Mr Fowler. Sport has always been a big part of my life, and memories of playing rounders, netball, or hockey at LQ are some of my favourites. The highlight of the year was sports day – a big deal at LQ, always resulting in big wins for Watts (the best house).

10 Q News | Issue 19 | Spring 2024 ALUMNI INTERVIEW

Favourite memory of Les Quennevais?

The Mallorca trip in Year 10. Even now, myself and my two LQ best friends, Laura and Nyah, still laugh about the antics from that trip.

What path did you take and who inspired you along the way to get you where you are today?

I was fortunate to have an idea of what I wanted to do from a young age, gravitating towards a crime related career. For my A levels, I chose Finance, Geography, Philosophy, and Psychology. Studying Psychology deepened my fascination with the world of crime, influencing my decision to pursue a degree in Criminology. During my degree, I explored a wide range of topics including drugs, violence, cybercrime, forensics, and more. My interest in intelligence and counterterrorism emerged along the way, leading me to focus on the field of security and choose a Masters in International Security.

Throughout the year, I gained knowledge on terrorism, nuclear weapons, intelligence services, and geopolitics whilst experiencing life in Barcelona. When I returned to Jersey, I sought to find a job aligned with the security/intelligence field and found a role in the FIU. My Masters degree has proved extremely relevant as my work involves tackling issues such as terrorist financing, drug trafficking, and geopolitical threats facing Jersey.

Throughout my academic years, my parents and family have been the ones who have supported and encouraged me most. Additionally, the teachers and professors who have taught me along the way helped me discover my interests and follow my ambitions. I also have the best group of friends who bring constant laughter and fun to my life.

Favourite aspect of your job?

Learning from influential and experienced individuals, looking at interesting cases, and being constantly challenged. Additionally, the international scope of our work allows for connections with professionals across the world, which is hugely insightful.

What advice would you give to students looking at their career options?

My advice if you don’t know what you want to do is to stay open-minded and embrace any opportunities that come your way. Don’t feel pressured to have everything figured out straight away and remember that exam results don’t define your entire future. Follow your passions so that you end up in a job that you enjoy. More importantly, make the most of your summer holidays while you can…they don’t last forever.

Students broaden their horizons at LQS Careers Fair

This year’s Careers Fair witnessed a bigger turn out than ever before with over 40 companies present and an ever-broadening range of careers for students to engage with. It represented a chance for students to start thinking about what they might be interested in, or to get some more information about a career they’ve been interested in for some time.

The careers fair is one of the highlights of our Careers Education program at Les Quennevais and students showed they were ready to fully engage with employers. The feedback this year from the employers really showed the hard work that has been going on during tutor times and PSE lessons.

There really was something for everyone this year and employers were coming up with fresh ideas to get students engaged, we had exercise bikes, tractors from The Jersey Royal Company and some creepy crawlies from Durrell to name just a few.

One of the changes this year was to try and make the event as interactive as possible for students. This included getting involved with catering or the hair and beauty sector. Jersey Electric had students rolling up their sleeves and getting practical, while various areas sections of the health industry had brought along their own challenges to try and give students a better understanding of what the job would really be like.

Every year group gets a chance attend the Careers Fair and we encourage students to think about the kind of environment they may want to work in, whether in a law firm or making sure produce gets to the shelves of Waitrose or Coop, working in an office environment, on a construction site, motivating people in the health and fitness industry or one of the many roles with Ports of Jersey. The Les Quennevais Careers Fair offers students a realistic glimpse into potential careers.

“The questions your students ask about employment show they have really been thinking about careers after school”
Jersey Electricity Company

We know at Les Quennevais School that one of our challenges is preparing students for a world where new jobs emerge almost on a weekly basis and we were delighted to have some new employers from areas such as the Financial Investigation Unit, along with some of our more established employers from the finance and construction sectors. Something we really encourage parents to do is have regular discussions about what your sons and daughters are thinking about as a career following education.

The day we welcomed sporting legend Patrice Evra

There was an electricity of excitement pulsating through the school on the day of the Sports Dinner. This was because this was to be no ordinary school day, for on this day we welcomed a sporting icon. An international footballing legend who has won 21 major trophies and played for the game’s greatest manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. It was to be another historic day for Les Quennevais School, another day in which we asked ourselves afterwards – ‘did that really just happen’? It was the day we welcomed Patrice Evra.

As a much revered and loved captain of Manchester United and the French National team, Patrice Evra is the consummate modern sportsman. He is a successful entrepreneur with his ‘I Love This Game’ brand, a glowing example of health and fitness, a motivational speaker and a massively influential social media personality. Nowadays, among a myriad of endeavours, he aims to help mentor and inspire people around the world to maximise their potential.

His infectious personality was on full display as he took three groups for a special football coaching session, with students hanging on his every word and some struggling to comprehend that they were receiving instruction or even a pass from the Manchester United legend.

Patrice couldn’t help but join in with the games providing a football experience that our students will never forget. Following on from the coaching, Mr Richardson and Mr Le Feuvre hosted a live Q&A in front of the whole school invoking some inspiring answers from Patrice who put the GOAT debate to rest, opting for his former teammate and friend Cristiano Ronaldo. Evra spoke passionately about his Mother’s influence on his life and cited Ryan Giggs as the best player he played with. Patrice inspired the audience when asked what makes a good leader given his experience answering “the best leaders create leaders around them”.

18 Q News | Issue 19 | Spring 2024 PATRICE EVRA
19 Q News | Issue 19 | Spring 2024

Without prompting, Patrice also credited two of our school values - resilience and respect for how he achieved such success in the game and told the audience that respect is everything, something he touched on again later on in the evening at the Sports Awards Dinner. This clear message from Patrice gave external validation to our school values and proved to our students what can be achieved if these values are upheld on a daily basis.

He gave a concise answer to the difference between the standard professional and those who are considered to be world class – “sacrifice”, making the audience sigh collectively when he recalled that his three year old son told him that he hated Manchester United because ‘they took my Daddy’. He went on to say that this level of sacrifice was the price he had to pay for his success under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Throughout the day’s events, Patrice kept speaking about ‘the team’ and when asked ‘what makes a great team player?’ he gave Ji Sung Park as an example of the perfect team player who always put the team first and fulfilled whatever task was given to him for the benefit of the team’s success.

You do not have to be a football or Manchester United fan to be totally inspired by his words as he is clearly so much more than an ex-professional footballer. Patrice is a multifaceted man who speaks six languages and has an irrepressible sense of humour, boundless energy, constant optimism, and highly contagious joie de vivre.

In the latest chapter of his life, Patrice’s main focus is to give back to others: whether it be joining the fight to end violence against children or promoting gender equality through charitable affiliations, spreading positivity with his I Love This Game motto –something he got the entire school to chant in unison at the end of the Q&A which was posted on his Instagram account to his 13.2 million followers!

PATRICE EVRA

The extraordinary day culminated with Patrice being the special guest and speaker at our Sports Awards Dinner. Patrice presented the lucky winners with their prizes giving students lasting memories and a photo with a true sporting great that they will cherish forever. Patrice was incredibly humble and spoke to every table and signed a mountain of memorabilia for students before giving an inspiring after-dinner speech focussing not on sports but on the value of life and again, the importance of universal respect and the blessing of everyday privileges we take for granted. He finished by saying ‘the star is the team, it is not one individual’. A hugely poignant message for the 190 students in attendance.

Patrice was extremely generous with his time throughout the day pausing for selfies and autographs with students and staff giving a glimpse into the life of an A-list celebrity, something he is used to and has to manage wherever he goes. But this is not normal for our school community and we are incredibly grateful to have shared his company.

It was an experience that our school community will remember forever as school days are precious but even more so when they are days like this one!

Sports Awards Dinner gets extra stardust

Carrying on from the high of hosting the effervescent Patrice Evra in school earlier in the day. Students, staff and guests were understandably excited to welcome him again in the evening for our Sports Awards Dinner.

Once again hosted at the Jersey Rugby Club and kindly sponsored by Grant Thornton, over 190 students attended to celebrate the sporting commitment and excellence at Les Quennevais School. This event is one of the school’s flagship fixtures on the school calendar and the only one of its kind in Jersey giving students the chance to bond with their teammates in a formal setting, that some might never have experienced.

And this year was extra special as the evening had been given a heavy sprinkle of stardust as Patrice Evra entered to rapturous applause from the guests making for an atmosphere of awe and wonder. You knew it was going to be a very special evening.

In an unfortunate era where other secondary schools have reduced extra-curricular sport and struggle to put out teams, we are extremely proud of the plethora of sports available to students and the sheer number of teams we are able to assemble with an overwhelming number of students committing to sport at Les Quennevais, something noted by an impressed Patrice.

The wonderful staff at the Jersey Rugby Club worked tirelessly to look after us throughout the evening and we are so grateful to continue this relationship with our sporting neighbours. Students were awarded with prizes presented by Patrice Evra for Players’ Player and Coach’s Player of the Year for all sports ranging from Rounders, Athletics and Cricket in last year’s Summer Term to Rugby and Hockey this term.

Special recognition prizes were awarded for Boys’ and Girls’ Team of the Year, School Values, House Awards, Unsung Hero and Rising Star along with the Headteacher’s Award for Leadership and Governor’s Award for Outstanding Commitment to Sport.

This was all before Patrice Evra delivered an after-dinner speech for the ages in which he spoke about the value of life, emphasising the importance of respect in everything you do and how lucky are students are for the daily opportunities they are given before finally finishing with ‘the star is the team’.

The simple but resounding message showed itself in a standing ovation.

The most coveted prize of the evening, Sports Personality of the Year, voted for on the evening by their peers was the most closely contested yet, which saw gymnast and all-round athlete Year 11 Lottie coming 3rd, outstanding County swimmer Year 11 Bo taking 2nd and Year 10 sprinting phenomenon Charlie being crowned our 2024 Sports Personality of the Year, a most deserving winner indeed.

Patrice ensured he visited every table to give all students that memorable photo and contact with a genuine celebrity before very generously signing a mountain of memorabilia for students as he bid everyone farewell.

The evening typified our mission of learning through excellence and enjoyment and will go down in LQ folklore. This was an evening our students will tell their children about one day and one that all in attendance will never forget.

Meet our new learning mentor Mr Mitchell

Who is Mr Mitchell?

I am Mr Mitchell, I grew up in Warrington and moved to Jersey 3 years ago. I am currently a learning mentor at the school and am working within the Student Support Department.

Before I joined Les Quennevais, I was a professional rugby player for 11 years with Sale Sharks, Connacht, Northampton Saints and most recently Jersey Reds. I was also lucky enough to represent England at U20 Level in the Six Nations and World Cup. Unfortunately, the Jersey Reds went into liquidation in September 2023. I’ve always wanted to get into teaching/ coaching after my rugby career and after speaking with Mrs Hague and Mrs Moisan it felt like the perfect fit for me to start my teaching journey. All the staff and pupils have been amazing, and I’ve already learnt so much.

How would you describe yourself in three words?

Energetic, optimistic, busy.

What is your main goal within your new role?

In my rugby career I have learnt from some of the best coaches and players in the world. They have taught me so much about getting the very best out of myself and how to deal with high pressured environments. I would love to share some of those things with the students at Les Quennevais and help them as much as possible to exceed in what ever they are passionate about.

Why did you want to work at Les Quennevais?

It’s an amazing school with a great reputation and it’s a place where I feel I can learn a lot from the staff and students. The standards are very high at Les Quennevais and it’s very fast paced which I love. The facilities are brilliant here and there are so many resources to help staff and students excel.

What are your likes?

Golf, hiking and wild camping .

What are your dislikes?

Seafood, being injured and losing.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Be where your feet are! These days its very easy to get caught up worrying about the past/ future, this advice helps me stay present and control all the things I can control and ignore the stuff that I can’t control.

Who is your idol?

My Grandad. He was in the Navy and worked very hard during his life. He took me and my brother all over the North-West when we were little to play rugby, we definitely have a lot to thank him for. He has an infectious energy and he has time for everyone he meets. I’ll be very proud if I become half the man he is.

What excites you about your new role at Les Quennevais?

The opportunity I have to help pupils and hopefully make a difference at the school is something I’m really excited about. There is loads of great stuff happening at the school and I’m really happy to be a part of Les Quennevais.

Students win Architecture Challenge

The annual AJA (Association of Jersey Architects) island wide school’s Architecture challenge was held this year on Friday 1st March, at Les Quennevais School, where schools from across the island gathered to compete in the challenge to design and construct a cardboard chair.

Teams from Victoria College Preparatory, La Moye and Rouge Bouillon primary schools took part in the KS2 category, while teams from Les Quennevais School, Jersey College for Girls and Victoria College took part in the KS3 and KS4 categories, with 15 teams in total entering the competition.

Students had to construct the chairs completely from reused cardboard that they had collected themselves, and assemble the chairs with as few adhesives as possible, with the aim of creating the assembly joints from the cardboard. All chairs and design sheets were judged and tested against a set criteria by members of the AJA, and had to bear the weight of a person sitting on them.

Renowned Architectural writer Hugh Pearman MBE from the UK was present at the event, and judged all entries to choose the overall winner. The overall winning prize of £600 was kindly donated by Romerils who sponsored the event, and was awarded to one of the Les Quennevais School KS3 teams consisting of Lucy, Lauren, Sam and Flynn! They designed and constructed an outstanding cardboard chair that was innovative, elegant, strong and finished to a very high standard.

We are very proud of all our students that took part in the competition, Lucy, Lauren, Sam, Flynn, Hayley, Barley, Ozzy, Billy and John from KS3, and Beau, Paige, Will, Ethan, Grace, Evan, Poppy and Ethan from KS4. The standard of designs and finished pieces was extremely high.

The cardboard chairs are currently being displayed in the window of Romerils store and will be exhibited by the AJA later this year. Congratulations to our wonderful KS3 and KS4 students for your hard work and success in this competition.

Year 11 students attend Commonwealth Service

In a remarkable educational and cultural journey, Mrs Hague and Mrs Moisan took eight very lucky Year 11 students to attend the recent Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey on Monday, March 11th whilst being treated to some of the best activities London has to offer.

After arriving on Sunday afternoon, the students enjoyed a matinee performance of the heartwarming production of “Mrs. Doubtfire” before delving into the rich tapestry of cultural diversity with a visit to Chinatown. Immersed in the vibrant sights, sounds, and aromas of this iconic district, they explored a fusion of Chinese heritage and contemporary British culture with the first day ending with a lovely meal at New Loon Fung Chinese Restaurant.

On the morning of the service the group embarked on a whimsical visit to the Shrek Experience, immersing themselves in the fantastical world of the beloved ogre followed by an early lunch before getting suited and booted for the main event.

Impeccably dressed and looking immaculate waving their Jersey flags, they proudly represented Jersey at a service where they were accompanied by the Foreign Secretary and former Prime Minister David Cameron, who gave them a friendly wave, the students were not only part of a historical event but also had a brush with political royalty.

The service, graced by the presence of Her Majesty the Queen and the Prince of Wales, was a momentous occasion that left a lasting impact on the whole group. This experience, no doubt, offered them a unique insight into the workings of the British monarchy and the global Commonwealth.

After the memorable service, the group had the pleasure of watching the acclaimed “Hamilton” leaving the students awe-inspired and culturally enriched after an incredible day.

On the last day the students enjoyed exploring the iconic landmarks of London through an open-top bus tour of the City. The students didn’t let the rain get in the way of taking in the iconic sights Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and to the bustling streets of Covent Garden.

Amidst the cultural activities, the students also had a chance to unwind and indulge in some leisure time as they spent their final afternoon shopping at Westfield, one of London’s premier shopping destinations. eclectic blend of shops, boutiques, and eateries, enjoying a taste of London’s vibrant retail scene.

This unforgettable trip exemplifies the commitment of the school to provide holistic learning experiences beyond the confines of the classroom. By exposing students to diverse cultural, historical, and social contexts, they not only broaden their horizons but also nurture their curiosity and appreciation for the world around them.

34 Q News | Issue 19 | Spring 2024 COMMONWEALTH SERVICE

Reflecting on the trip, Mrs Hague expressed her pride in witnessing the students’ enthusiasm and engagement throughout the experience. “These opportunities are invaluable in shaping our students into well-rounded individuals,” she remarked. “It’s not just about academic excellence; it’s about fostering a sense of curiosity, empathy, and cultural awareness. The students have been a joy these past few days and they should be proud of how they have represented the school.”

Mrs Moisan echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the importance of experiential learning in complementing academic studies. “Travelling and experiencing different cultures firsthand is an essential part of education,” she stated. “It fosters empathy, tolerance, and a global perspective, qualities that are increasingly vital in today’s interconnected world.”

As the students return to their studies, their memories of the Commonwealth Service, the West End productions, the city tour, and the shopping spree will undoubtedly linger, serving as a source of inspiration and motivation. Thanks to the visionary leadership of Mrs Hague, these students were able to enjoy a unique experience of discovery and enlightenment that will shape their futures for years to come.

McKeon

We have reached the end of the Spring Term where we need to be – in the lead. We dominated the boys basketball and were equally successful in the girls football meaning the red flag was flying after a great week of competition. We narrowly missed out on repeating our success in the pancake races and came away with joint 2nd. Throughout the term, we have consistently led on Classcharts points which makes me really proud as this tells me you are making a daily conscious effort to be model students and are all contributing to the House.

You all heeded my call in getting the most number of entries for the DEC competition, hugely improving on our efforts last year and this made me very, very happy so thank you to everyone who took the time to enter the competition gaining vital points for the House.

I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate the recent recipients of the McKeon House Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 Awards for Commitment to House Sport awarded at this year’s Sports Dinner. This year’s worthy winners were Year 9 student Ollie and Year 10 student Sydney. Both students epitomise what it means to be in McKeon and bear the red thread on their blazer. Ollie and Sydney always give it their all for McKeon when given the opportunity to compete for their House whilst also championing other students, always putting the team before themselves. Congratulations to you both and thank you for being fantastic role models both the school and your House. McKeon are lucky to have you.

We ended the term strong with wins in the Bunny Dash and Easter Egg hunt ensuring the flag was flying at the end of term.

A very busy Summer term is heading our way with Swimming Gala, Rounders, Softball, House Music, Photography and Sports Day all taking place next term.

Next term, Year 10 students will be going through the process of applying for a student leadership position and our House and Sports Captains will be chosen. I wish all of Year 10 the best of luck as they navigate this process and am sure they will attack it like they have always approached House Competitions, with utter confidence.

We are in the best possible position we can be. Now it is about staying there, seeing it through and getting the job done. We can do it, I know we can do it.

Because...

WE. ARE. MCKEON!!!

I am excited to share with you the wonderful achievements and events that have taken place during the Spring Term. In true Tranter style, we started the term victorious in The Pancake Race, this has become a firm favourite amongst the students and staff alike and it was great to win this event early on in the term.

We were delighted to share the remarkable achievement of Daisy, one of our talented students, who emerged as the winner in the Primary Engineers Competition. Daisy’s innovative ideas and exceptional engineering skills impressed the judges, earning her well-deserved recognition.

We are incredibly proud of Daisy’s accomplishment and her dedication to representing Tranter House with excellence. Not only did Daisy win overall but the entries from our Year 9 forms in total secured Tranters win overall. Daisy proudly raised the blue flag and the school was lit up blue to recognise Tranters win, representing the collective efforts of our students.

I am thrilled to share the highlights of our recent Sports Awards Evening, where I had the opportunity to present Noah and Rebecca with the Tranter KS3 and KS4 awards, for their outstanding sporting achievements. This special event was a celebration of their dedication, hard work, and remarkable talent in their respective sports. Their achievements serve as an inspiration to all of us, reminding us that perseverance and discipline does not go unnoticed.

The summer term is going to be a busy one starting in the first week back with the Swimming Gala, we have a host of talent within Tranter House so we hope to see more points appear on the score board. The House Music competition will be back again and hopefully we will continue the winning streak from last year.

The Summer term will also bring the opportunity for the Year 10s to apply for the roles of the new House and Sports Captains for Tranter House, I will be looking for passionate and driven students who are able to work alongside me to drive up the motivation of the House and support the lower years, a very exciting time ahead.

As we move forward into the new term, let us continue to support and encourage one another. Together, we can achieve great things and make Tranter House proud.

Watts

Another term and we continue to be in a position of strength chasing down McKeon House. We continue to show our strength in the Sports events, and it was great to see so many Watts students receiving recognition at the recent Sports Awards Evening. Jessica and JJ were the recipients of the Watts awards. This is always a difficult decision choosing one student from each Key Stage and with the House and Sports captains in Year 11 doing so much to help me and organise the teams for the different events opting to choose someone else is a difficult decision. However, both Jessica and JJ are true team players who are invaluable in a House/ Team/ group context simply because they will just volunteer, be there and give their best. Congratulations to them both.

I would also like to say congratulations to Bo our House Captain who was awarded the commitment to Sport award. This is in recognition for the tremendous amount of time and effort that is required to swim at National Standard and a County Champion Swimmer. Hours before and after school in the pool, trips to the UK at weekends all whilst staying on top of your studies.

Notable events this term was the Basketball and Girls football competition which was outstanding especially the football. Once again Watts worked hard and ensured we had a full compliment of players and tried our best, which is all anyone can ask.

At the time of writing this we have teams in place for the Easter events and the Swimming Gala which takes place on or return to school after the Easter holidays, once again I hope that we will compete in all the races and raise the flag.

I wish everyone a restful school holidays and look forward to the busy Summer term where we will appoint our House and Sports Captains as the Year 11s move on, and finish with the Les Quennevais Sports Day.

Easter at LQS

We ended the Spring term in true Les Quennevais style, by having some good old fashioned fun, once again spearheaded by the unstoppable force of nature that is Mrs Moisan.

From the Inter-House Bunny Hop and Year 7 Easter Egg Hunts to Mrs. Moisan’s raffles to the Bingo Hall of Fame, and even our beloved Site Team donning chicken and bunny outfits, we’ve had a blast!

The Bunny Run competed by Years 8, 9 & 10 was another resounding success, this year’s competition won by McKeon House.

The famous Year 7 Easter Egg hunt was another triumph as Year 7 students sprinted in relays to ‘find’ their eggs in a bid to finish first and claim victory for their House. The atmosphere was electric with Year 7s ensuring they could be heard for miles. In the end victory went to McKeon House.

On the final day of term, Mrs. Moisan worked her magic with her legendary raffle. Throughout the day, anticipation hung in the air as tickets were drawn and announced on the tannoy and prizes claimed. It was a whirlwind of excitement and joy as lucky winners walked away with their arms full of goodies.

And let’s not overlook the highlight of lunchtime – the Bingo Hall of Fame, hosted by none other than Mrs. Moisan. The bingo cards were out, the dabbers were ready, and the competition was fierce. Laughter echoed through the halls as staff and students battled it out for the coveted title of Bingo Champion.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without our fantastic Site Team, who truly embraced the Easter spirit by donning their chicken and bunny outfits. Their infectious enthusiasm set the tone for the day, ensuring that everyone started with a smile.

As we bid farewell to another term filled with laughter, learning, and unforgettable moments, let’s take a moment to wish everyone a very Happy Easter.

THE WINNERS

Luana 11S: McKeon House

Nominated by Mrs M Le Mottee & Mrs Moisan

“Luana has matured into a very nurturing and caring student who always takes time to look out for students that she has been worried about. Luana has gone the extra mile in looking out for younger students and has ensured that other students have felt comfortable outside of school and generally as and when needed. Luanna contributes so much to the life and community at Les Quennevais School. She is planning a career within Health and Social Care and the personal attributes and care that she will bring to this profession are excellent.

Thank you, Luana, for being such an advocate for your peers and other students.”

- Mrs M Le Mottee & Mrs Moisan

Cassius 7S: McKeon House

Nominated by Mr J Dearman

“Throughout this school year, Cassius has consistently displayed all three LQ values in Form Time and his science lessons. Cassius is always polite, helpful and his behaviour is impeccable whilst at LQ. He has a fantastic attitude towards learning and achieved full marks in his last Science assessment. Cassius has also been very pragmatic in forging new friendships and bringing together pupils from different primary schools.

Cassius epitomises what we want a Les Quennevais student to be. ”

- Mr J Dearman

Perry 11E: Tranter House

Nominated by Mrs P Goodchild

“Perry is an all-round outstanding student. He most recently performed as the lead Sky Masterson in our school production of Guys and Dolls. Despite having to attend extra rehearsals and missing some lessons he has not let his studies and focus towards his GCSEs fade and instead has taken this as an additional challenge to go over and above.

Whatever Perry does he gives it 100% whether it is competing in an Inter-House event, playing as part of the school band or being involved in the Senior Student Leadership team. Perry embodies the very culture of Les Quennevais and will be missed when he leaves us in the Summer term. We wish him all the best of luck for his future studies and endeavours. ”

Winter 7N: Tranter House

Nominated by Miss H O’Connell

“Winter is a real asset to his year group and has made a brilliant start to his time at Les Quennevais School. Winter has also made a very personal commitment to helping others. He recently donated his hair to the Little Princess Trust. Winter started LQ in the Autumn Term with a very long ponytail which went all the way down his back. When he returned to school in the Spring, however, these lengthy locks had disappeared…! He had donated them to a charity which makes wigs out of real hair for children with cancer and other related illnesses. What a star! I asked Winter about this, and he said this is the fourth time he has done it. He has donated his hair since he was in Year 3, and he took his inspiration from his big sister, Amelie (in Year 11).

I wonder if we will see the return of the ponytail for a fifth donation in a couple of years’ time…?

Well done Winter! ”

- Miss H O’Connell

Diniz 10Q: Watts House

Nominated by Mrs E Morley

“Diniz has grown into a quietly confident and mature young man and most importantly one who recognises the importance of setting his own standards very highly. Since Year 7 Diniz has, step by step, grown into a real role model for both younger students and his peers. Academically Diniz is pushing himself to be the best he can be, but it is not just this that makes him a true Les Quennevais star. Diniz is a Form Rep, he plays rugby for the school and plays football for St. Peter. If that were not enough Diniz also practices Thai boxing, and we wish him well for his up-and-coming UK competition where he will represent Pisces gym. Diniz is kind, friendly and sociable. When I asked him what makes him ‘him’ he said being a team player, being independent and non-judgmental are what he strives to be. I also asked him why? His response: “What goes around comes around!” - you can’t go far wrong with a value like that. Diniz is a remarkable young man, and we are proud to have him at Les Quennevais. ”

- Mrs E Morley

Hayley 9L: Watts House

Nominated by Miss J Alexander

“Hayley is not a student who will promote herself or complain, and she always puts others before herself. A keen sportsperson Hayley leads by example and has thrown herself into the many House events, she also plays football at school and has recently been awarded for her dedication and commitment to the netball team. The love of sports doesn’t stop with school participation, Hayley is also a proud member of the Jersey Wanderers.

Hayley’s ambition is seen in lessons as well; having over 60 positives this academic year reflecting her hard work across many subjects. Most recently Hayley was part of a team of Year 9 students chosen to participate in the Architecture Competition and as is no surprise to us, the team were all complimented on their engagement, manners and outside of the box thinking. This just sums up the thoughtful, polite, ambitious student Hayley is, and I am sure with this resilient attitude she will go from strength to strength. ”

Jesse 9Y: Watts House

Nominated by Mrs N Burgess

“It is not just in school we see just how special our students can be, but also what they bring to the community. At the beginning of February, Jesse was surfing in large waves. As he was paddling out, he noticed a man who did not have a board with him. As Jesse got closer, he spoke to the man and asked if he was ok, the man said his leash had snapped so he had lost his board and was unable to get back in to shore. With no hesitation or sense of panic Jesse jumped off his board and let the man hold onto it. They started attempting to go back to shore, but the man was struggling. Jesse took off his leash and the man then used the board whilst Jesse swam back in alongside him. Jesse took him to waist high water before leaving him and paddling back out for his surf. What a brave young man.”

- Mrs N Burgess

Ava 8L: Watts House

Nominated by Miss M Thebault

“Ava has been a phenomenal student since joining us in Year 7 and her ambition to succeed has only been enhanced by her commitment to sports at Les Quennevais. In school Ava plays for nearly every sports team you can think of, including the netball team, hockey team, rounders team, athletics team, football team and co-ed netball team. Also, outside of school she plays for two youth netball teams: the JLA and Youth Nets. Unfortunately, Ava has recently suffered a knee injury, but this didn’t stop her from attending all practice sessions and helping our PE staff with either setting up for practice or helping to umpire. At this year’s Sports Awards ceremony Ava was awarded the ‘8A Coach’s Player’ award for Netball. On top of being an amazing asset to our PE department, her ambition and resilience in school is fantastic with nearly the highest number of positives in Year 8. She truly embodies Les Quennevais’ core values, and we can’t wait to see what the remainder of Year 8 has in store for her. ”

- Miss M Thebault

Marianne 8Q: Watts House

Nominated by Miss J Alexander

“Having taught Marianne since September 2023 I can categorically state she encompasses what it means to be an ambitious and respectful Les Quennevais student. Her attitude and manner, not just in my lessons, but around the school, show her to be thoughtful, friendly, helpful and always thankful; not a lesson goes past where Marianne doesn’t leave without saying thank you. She engages fully in her English lessons, pushing herself to respond to feedback and she is ambitious in her writing. The fact that Marianne has not one negative this whole academic year would indicate that this is her attitude to all her schooling. She really is a delight to teach and should be recognised for this. ”
