Spring 2023
How might we use biomimicry to transform an adventure center for children into a space that not only excites their sense of exploration but also nurtures their understanding of and appreciation for the natural world?
Natural Growth Form Study: Dendriform + Biomimicry
Biomimcry:
• Drawing inspiration from natural forms, processes, and ecosystems to inform innovative and sustainable design solutions.
Dendriform:
• Structures or patterns that resemble the branching, tree-like forms found in nature
Tree Column Derivations
PLANE: establish a base
DIVIDE SURFACE: generate grid of points
TREE BRANCH: pull points from tree branch paths
CULL POINT: focus on centralized area
POINT CHARGE: create an area with a magnetic field
FIELD LINE: compute lines through points
MOVE: translate upwards
NURBS CURVE: create curves from control points to mimic tree branches
LOFT: complete mass
OFFSET: give thickness
ADD MATERIAL AND COMPLETE: used glulam wood to mimic tree materiality
Cascading central floorboard to implement topography

How can we turn our design studio’s physical models from being put aside and forgotten into a dynamic design idea that keeps them on display, reminding us of how we design in response to the environment?
Derivations
GRID: to organize the space
BOX ARRAY: extrude the space
BASE: input custom base
PULL POINT: extract points from curve
CULL: subtract, boxes follow curve
PIPE: give thickness
CURVE: input custom curve
PULL POINT

03|Vertical Urban Farm
A Place for Community Kansas City, KS
Size: 26,000 sqft
Professor: Todd Achelpohl
Fall 2022
How can we solve the problem of food scarcity and lack of community in downtown Kansas City, Kansas?
Concept + Precedent
Community
• I wanted to create a space that is open to the public at any age level and that can also serve as a learning environment.
StruCture
• The shape of the structure was inspired by a number of other greenhouses that have been built. A big common factor is a sloped roof for ventilation and rain water collection.
HiStory
• During the 1890s economic depression, empty lot gardens were established in the United States as the first community gardens. Using vacant sites in the city, Detroit was the first American city to establish a locally funded urban gardening program.

How can we expand Pioneer Cemetery, where more than 450 KU community members are laid to rest, by adding a non-denominational chapel and four columbariums with space for over 1400 urns, all designed to offer a tranquil setting for visitors?
