HOBGOOD COMMUNITY CHURCH Hobgood Community Church was built in the 1880s as a Methodist "meeting house"at Hobgood fork. When the village of Hobgood was incorporated in 1891 a corner of E.P. Hyman's garden was designated as the church’s permanent site. The church building was pulled to its new home one mile away by mules and logs and often only a few feet a week. It remained a Methodist church until the congregation outgrew it in 1955. It was then purchased by Hobgood United Methodist Church, donated to the town of Hobgood, and moved to its current location. Renovations have been made possible by many talented and generous people too numerous to mention.

HALIFAX REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER Halifax Regional is a fully accredited medical facility by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare organizations. The facility is licensed for 204 beds, including psychiatric and nursery and offers an array of medical and surgical services, including 24-hour emergency care. About 800 people work at the hospital, and care is provided

by more than 60 on-staff physicians. Specialized care can be provided through affiliations with Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, Wake Med, UNC Hospitals and Duke Medical Center. Patients come from the counties of the Roanoke Valley, as well as Warren County in North Carolina and Greensville, Brunswick and Mecklenburg counties in Virginia.

HISTORIC HALIFAX 25 ST. DAVID ST., HALIFAX

The town of Halifax developed into a commercial and political center at the time of the American Revolution. North Carolina's Fourth Provincial Congress met in Halifax in the spring of 1776. On April 12, that congress unanimously adopted a document later called the "Halifax Resolves," which was the first official action by an entire colony recommending independence from England. Historic Halifax offers an audiovisual presentation, exhibits, guided tours and displays depicting the history of the town. Several historic structures are open on the site including the Tap Room and Owens House, which date back to 1760; the Eagle Tavern, 1790; 1808’s Sally Billy and Burgess houses; the Clerks Office founded in 1832 and the

Halifax County Jail built in 1838 and so much more. The outdoors drama "First for Freedom,” tells the story of Halifax County, particularly the town of Halifax's involvement in the events leading up to and during the Revolutionary War. The town of Halifax was sharply divided between those loyal to the crown and those who sought independence. A portion of the drama is performed each year. It is the second longest continuously run production in the state. And the Montfort House, an archaeological exhibit over original foundations, portrays the lifestyle of this wealthy Halifax resident, the first and only Provincial Grand Master Mason of North America. The site also offers a spacious picnic area.

MOWFIELD PLANTATION

Planted at the entrance of historical Mowfield Plantation is a weathered silver North Carolina highway marker, one of only two commemorating famous animals in the state. It reads: “SIR ARCHIE. Foundation sire of American Thoroughbred race horses including Timoleon, Boston, Lexington and Man O’War. Died at Mowfield, one mile north, in

1833.” There is no way to sneak up on Mowfield, which sits north of U.S. Highway 158 just a few miles west of Jackson. Both of its gravel driveways are a mile long, flanked by low, flat cotton fields. In the heat of the summer sun, the house seems to shimmer in the distance. Mowfield was built near the turn of the 19th century by planter William Amis, a

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

Halifax and the Roanoke River played a vital role in the success of what was the maritime Underground Railroad. In the 1800s, Halifax was a center of commerce, and a major source of news and information for a Freedom Seeker’s journey. Sympathetic people shared news, and a large community of free blacks in Halifax often hid or helped those traveling north. More than 600 freedom seekers were assisted in their escape by a nearby group of Quakers.

The Underground Railroad’s complex transportation network included the Roanoke River and Roanoke Canal. Black boatmen worked the waters of the Roanoke River. Freedom seekers used the river’s rapids and steep banks to elude capture. Along the waterfront in Weldon, many seekers found transport to the “Great Dismal Swamp” or Albemarle Sound, and from there to the open seas and destinations north to a new and free way of life.

ROANOKE RAPIDS HIGH SCHOOL

Roanoke Rapids High School serves a full complement of students, as it has every year since it opened in 1921. Intended to serve as the centerpiece of the entire Roanoke Rapids community, it was the brainchild of local industrialist Samuel Paterson, who single-handedly made sure Roanoke Rapids received one of the most state-of-the-art and architecturally advanced high schools in the state at the time. Now a registered historical landmark, the Senior Building on the RRHS campus

even housed a theatrical stage inside, because Patterson wanted the community to come together for cultural events at the school. In 2018, Architectural Digest listed RRHS as, "one of the most beautiful high schools in America." Most recently, the district renovated the adjacent Armory for its Roanoke Rapids Early College High School. The two schools will share common areas such as the cafeteria and gymnasium on the RRHS campus.

NORTHAMPTON COUNTY COURTHOUSE The Northampton County Courthouse was constructed in 1858. But more than 117 years prior, the county was served by other courthouses situated on the same site. Resting atop a high base, the courthouse is one of the few surviving Greek Revival temple forms still standing in the state. The noble brick structure, with iconic portico and columns, has become a symbol of Northampton County. This historic courthouse and timeless square and the stately old homes in and around Jackson

whisper of the rich and romantic days of the Antebellum South. Change has come slowly to Jackson, as it is the kind of place where people can find ice cream suppers, afternoon teas, church bazaars and a quaint village atmosphere. The fabric that once held all small communities in Northampton County together still remain in places, such as the local grocery store, butcher shop, barber shop, 5 and dime, and community restaurant.

THE AQUEDUCT ON CHOCKOYOTTE CREEK ROANOKE CANAL TRAIL, WELDON The aqueduct is one of the most beautiful spots in the Roanoke Valley. It was one of the final structures built before the Roanoke Canal opened and one of the only man-made structures built on this part of the creek. Many types of stonework are visible from the observation deck, which sits along the Roanoke Canal Trail and is easily accessible in Weldon. The stonework indicates improvements and repairs that have been made to the structure throughout the years. Right near the aqueduct is a placard in memory of Roanoke Rapids resident Pete Luter, who died in a skydiving accident in 2010. There's also a bench dedicated to the memory of Edward Akers, one of the founders of the Roanoke Canal Commission. Take a walk over to the aqueduct so you can get a beautiful view and a brief history lesson about the area.

PERSON’S ORDINARY SR 1001, LITTLETON

THE AVENUE HISTORIC DISTRICT Roanoke Avenue, the artery where business flows through uptown and downtown Roanoke Rapids, boasts nearly 300 retailers and services from eateries to insurance sales, gymnastics to hair salons. Within the past year, the Avenue is seeing quite an upswing: 52 net jobs have been created; 20 new businesses have opened in the Main Street Roanoke Rapids district, and more than $4 million is private investment and better than $460,000 in public investment has come in.

LEARN MORE AT MAINSTREETROANOKERAPIDS.COM

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Person’s Ordinary in Littleton served as an inn and tavern for weary stagecoach travelers in the early to mid 1800s. The inn, which was operating by 1770, lies on what was the stagecoach road connecting Halifax to Hillsborough. It is associated with Thomas Person, an influential politician and military general, who before his death in 1800, was a staunch supporter of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and who Person County is named for. The “ordinary” in the inn’s name signified that it was a place for the common or ordinary travelers to stay. Well-heeled travelers stayed in manors rather than small inns. Today, Person’s Ordinary, restored by the Littleton Woman’s Club, is known as the last stagecoach inn on its original site.

Residents know the pond and dam for their history and beauty. The mill saw Confederate forces during the Civil War turn back Union attempts to destroy a railroad bridge spanning the Roanoke River. vitally important. The flow of supplies between Wilmington and Petersburg, Virginia, could have been disrupted had the Northern army succeeded, but after five hours of fighting on the third day, Union forces retreated after failing to capture the bridge. Northern forces lost 11 soldiers during the three-day conflagration, with the Confederates losing only one.

Halifax County has 15 certified Monarch Butterfly Waystation Habitats located in Halifax, LIttleton, Roanoke Rapids, Scotland Neck, Tillery and Weldon. The waystations are places that provide resources necessary for monarchs to produce successive generations and sustain their migration. Milkweeds are needed throughout the spring and summer breeding times for monarchs to produce the successive generations culminating with their fall migration. Nectar from flowers found at the waystations enable the monarchs to make their long journey during their fall migration to overwintering grounds in Mexico. The need for host plants for larvae and energy sources for adults applies to all monarch and butterfly populations around the world. And they are availalble at the waystations.

It has long been viewed as a “model program,” due to its hands-on, interactive approach, and it was established as not just a repository for artifacts, but also as

a working, educational, interactive museum that would provide opportunities for young people to experience learning first-hand. It serves as an exhibition center for cultivating and enhancing community awareness of the rich, abundant historic, cultural and natural resources unique to Northampton County.

OCCONEECHEE HUNTING LODGE Northampton and Halifax counties have been the state leaders in deer harvesting for several years. The region offers bow and arrow season beginning in early September, blackpowder in early October, and rifle season from midOctober to Jan. 1. Turkey season opens for four weeks in April, and game fowl season runs from Oct. 1 to March 30.

The Occoneechee Hunting Lodge is the oldest in the area, offering guided hunts since 1989. It offers a liberal bag limit, managed and unmanaged areas, and three or six full days of hunting. The lodge offers 8,000 acres of family owned hunting land in Northampton County on the Roanoke River. LILY POND CREEK LODGE Northampton County is one of the top deer and turkey producing counties in the state and is tops for the number of bucks per square mile. Lily Pond Creek Lodge spans over 1,500 acres and three lodges with terrain that is a mixture of agricultural fields producing soy beans, cotton and corn with many acres of mixed hardwoods, planted pine and swamp lands, a perfect blend of food and cover to grow an incredible amount of animals. It’s not unusual to see as many as 20 deer and turkeys in one field while waiting for that trophy buck to step into view. From Oct. 1 to Jan. 1 deer are harvested. During that same period and running through March 30, Lily Pond Creek offers game bird hunting, such as pheasant and quail. Turkey season runs for four weeks starting the second Saturday in April, and the lodge offers fishing guides for striped bass during early spring. LAKES AND ROANOKE RIVER

A

variety of fishing guides offer sensational outings. One of those is Caylin Burrell with Feathers and Fins Outfitters, who says, “We provide the rods and bait, all they need. All they have to do is show up ready to fish and with a smile.”Burrell says the Roanoke River and the lakes offer the biggest ecosystem for all types of wildlife, especially fishing. “We have so many opportunities to hunt and fish. We are one of the remaining spawning grounds that can be fished,” Burrell said speaking about striped bass, also known as the beloved Rockfish, a symbol for the region. Stripers are aggressive, he said. Some are bottom feeders, some wait for the bait to come to them. “Pound for pound, they are the hardest fighting fish,” Burrell said. “If you get in a good school of stripers, you can catch as many as five or six at a time. It makes for a faster day of fishing.”The trick, Burrell said, is to use the bait that is found in the area being fished. “Our lakes are full of shad minnows that people use nets to catch for bait.” Some people prefer artificial to live bait. Burrell says, don’t be afraid to change up. It all depends on what will attract the fish.“If you can find the bait, you’re going to find the fish,” he says. For Feathers and Fins, as well as other guides, fishing is generally done from a boat. “You have to be mobile and travel where the schools (of fish) go,” Burrell said. “Find people who know how to do it. Be open to different ideas and not afraid to try doing different things.”

RIVER FALLS PARK

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Every spring, anglers in droves come to River Falls Park on the Roanoke River in Weldon, which is known as the “Rockfish Capital of the World.” The Rockfish is a striped bass that many fishermen say is one of the best sports fish that can be attracted with a variety of baits. Spectacular fast moving waters at the Weldon Boat Landing, the Roanoke River provides residents and visitors

alike the opportunity to enjoy kayaking and canoeing, as well as fishing. River Falls Park also is a great place to sit and enjoy a beautiful afternoon relaxing, playing or having a picnic. Reservations for the large picnic shelter are available. FOR MORE INFORMATION: HISTORICWELDONNC.COM

THE DOG RUN Not only is it great for people and their pets traveling up and down Interstate 95, it is for newcomers and all folks living in The Roanoke Valley. It’s the Halifax County Visitors Dog Park, with two runs — one for small dogs and the other for larger ones — the park offers a respite for weary travelers whose dogs need to burn off some pent up energy. One person offering a review of the dog park online said, “Discovering this dog

park changed my life. I’m able to stop on trips on 95 and let the dogs out and run free for a bit, which makes mom and pups happy since tired dogs are more relaxed.” The dog park is located just behind the Halifax Visitor Center on Premier Boulevard in Roanoke Rapids, and is accessible from Exit 173 off I-95. MEDOC MOUNTAIN RIDING AND BIKING TRAILS Serenity is Medoc Mountain State Park, enhanced by fishing, hiking and riding on horseback or pedaling a bike. The gentle Fishing Creek and a scenic open meadow that spreads from the picnic grounds is a perfect spot for anglers and paddlers. Fishing Creek, in fact, is considered one of the cleanest streams in the region as it flows through about 2.5 miles of the park. Some of the park’s 10 miles of hiking trails wander along the creek; others climb several hundred feet to the upper reaches of Medoc Mountain. Roughly 10 miles of bridle trails and trailhead parking serve equestrians. The 34-site campground has RV-friendly sites and bathhouse, and warm-weather group camp facilities are nearby. Rangers offer free interpretive programs and hikes. New mountain bike trails were opened. The $160,000 project encompasses 8.6 miles of natural surface trails, varying from 3 to 4 feet in width. The mountain bike trail features two loops: Saponi Loop, at 3.3 miles, is moderately rated and ties in with existing hiking trails; and
Pyrite Loop, at 5.3 miles, is rated as a difficult trail, including several natural rock and tree obstacles. Unfortunately, the trails are closed during inclement weather to preserve them. The parks service monitors the trails until the condition is right for reopening. FOR MORE INFORMATION: NCPARKS.GOV, SEARCH MEDOC MOUNTAIN

ROANOKE CANAL TRAIL Wonderful wildlife and a variety of plants will excite all visitors to the Roanoke Canal Trail. The trail and its contributing resources tell more than 200 years of transportation history on the Roanoke River. The towpath, used as a pathway for horses towing barges, and the bottom of the canal provide walkers relatively easy access between Roanoke Rapids and Weldon. From the lake to the Canal Museum, which takes about 45 minutes, the trail is relatively flat. A few rolling hills await people strolling between the museum and River Road, another 45 minutes or so to complete. The trail generally

flattens out again along the path from River Road to Weldon’s River Falls Park, which can take more than 2-1/2 hours, with a stop at the famed Aqueduct along the way. Those who don’t want to walk the trail are in luck, thanks to the Roanoke Canal Museum’s trail bicycle loan program that launched in early 2016. The program offers users the opportunity to pick up a bike at Riverside Mill, 200 Mill St. in Weldon, or from the museum at 15 Jackson St. in Roanoke Rapids. There are 20 bikes available that can be borrowed in exchange for a person’s drivers license.
