OMNES PRO UNO Subject: Student cooperative in a precasted concrete housing This neighborhood from the 1960s was designed by the architect Bernard Murisier. It is one of the first large precast concrete housing complexes in French-speaking Switzerland. The project’s idea is to restore the coherence of the whole with light interventions. The addition of three new buildings allows the completion of the neighborhood as originally planned by the architect.

The main focus is on the building located to the north of the plot. It accommodates residents and visitors arriving from the train station. It incorporates the neighborhood’s layout but introduces contemporary elements.

The student cooperative is activated by a ground-floor public area and a wide walkway on every floor, as well as gardens on the flat roofs. A gradation from highly public to communal to private spaces is considered in the project so that each student can find their own space. The construction is also prefabricated, just like the existing buildings.

Precast concrete columns and beams are planned, enabling easier reuse in case of future demolition of the structure.

The landscape strategy is to reunite the Bois de Caudray neighborhood. By removing the surface car parks and the road that cuts the neighbourhood in two, and by creating a park at the centre of the complex, the idea is to turn the outdoor space back into a collective space.

The student housing cooperative offers generous common spaces. The balconies are places for residents to share and meet, and the spiral staircases are sculptural and offer a new experience at each landing.

MODULAAR Subject: The new Canton Library and State Archives of Aargau The building is located between the train station and the historic city center, in the district of the former military barracks. The new building houses both entities but maintains a clear separation. To the north, and with a direct link to the piazza, you will find all the spaces related to the cantonal library. The library space utilizes a post-and-beam structure and offers balcony spaces with diagonal views. To the south, on the first floors, you will find the State Archives. Access to the reading room is through a path through storage and workshop spaces, either by stairs or elevators.

The building’s structure is made of solid wood post-andbeam construction, which requires very little embodied energy. The secondary structure is achieved through a checkerboard pattern of joists. The façade reflects the square structure and aims to be modular, much like the interior.

We clearly see the bipolarity in the distribution of the program. The library benefits from the space on the public square. While the Archives are more discreet behind the preserved building.

EHEMALIGE HÖFE Subject: Transformation of a Parkhaus (parking garage) into a housing cooperative in Basel This 1970s structure currently houses shops and a parking garage spanning three levels on the upper floor, accessible via a helical ramp.

The key idea of the project is to draw inspiration from the neighborhood’s historical plans. Therefore, the building is extruded into three light wells. Public spaces such as a community center, a café, a library, and a co-working space are located on the lower floors, creating a place with a mix of functions and uses. A large terrace available to the entire community is situated on the third floor, as well as a rooftop garden.

The housing units are primarily located on the façade. Access to the apartments is through the kitchen, which is open to the living room, but a slight offset allows for the privacy of the living area from the communal space. The bedrooms are situated on either side of the living spaces, and all the apartments have private outdoor spaces.

The openness of the project, with several interior courtyards, makes the building more liveable for residents. A passage through the building is also allowed, making the ground floor activities attractive.

SINUOSUS Subject: Residential building in a former industrial brownfield sit, Bienne The project consists of two folded bars that form a block. These buildings enclose a communal courtyard.

A large cantilevered balcony made of a delicate concrete structure provides unique outdoor access. Their non-orthogonal shape creates a sense of openness towards the inner courtyard.

Thickened areas within the building create loggias and ensure privacy for the residents. The layouts are divided into «boxes» containing bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom spaces, which are more enclosed. The spaces between the boxes offer through-living areas.

The ground floors are constructed in concrete and form the base.

The structure is covered with precast concrete. The upper floors consist of load-bearing walls and cross-laminated timber (CLT) slabs. The exterior cladding is corrugated sheet metal. The corrugations follow the orthogonality of the boxes, emphasizing the corners.

The buildings are broken down into «boxes» containing the bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms. These are more confined spaces. The gaps between the boxes provide through-living areas. For the flats located in the widened bars, the entrance is between the boxes and opens onto the kitchen and living areas. Thanks to the glass door, even these apartments have through rooms.

MOUCHARABRICK Subject: Residential building in a recessed area, Bienne The project is located in a quiet and residential neighborhood, occupying a recessed corner of the block.

The building does not align with the neighboring building on the right, creating a corner reveal and accommodating loggias with two openings to the street. The entrance glazing aligns with the adjacent building, creating a transitional space between the public and private areas, also thanks to the front colonnades.

The plot is elongated (18 meters) and bordered by two parallel buildings. To introduce additional facades and maintain the occupants’ privacy while maximizing natural light, the windows are covered with a moucharabieh-style brickwork pattern.

The central core, consisting of a double brick wall, widens to accommodate the bathrooms and internal circulation of the housing units.

It defines the separation between daytime and nighttime spaces.
