Welcome to the Education South West Review!

Education South West was formed on 1st January from the merger of Templer Academy Schools Trust and Academies South West. Our vision is “working together, so children can lead great lives.” It is an inspiring and important mission and means that we want to do our best to give every single child in our schools the education they need to fulfil their desires.

In today’s complex and rapidly educational landscape, we believe that schools can best serve their children by solving the problems they face together. Our approach to this year’s national budget crisis provided an early example of the benefit of our larger size : through re-structuring and economies of scale we have saved £400,000 on back-office costs, money which goes straight into teaching. We are sharing our teaching and leadership practice, challenging and supporting one another to do better. In the last year, three of our schools, Rydon, East Allington and Blackawton, were confirmed as “good” by Ofsted, and Dartmouth was judged by HMI to be making excellent improvement. We were very pleased with the primary results at the end of the summer term.

The increased difficulty and uncertainty around the new GCSEs in English and Maths took us into August with some trepidation. Against a national backdrop of reduced pass rates, we were delighted that each one of our secondary schools showed an improved pass rate on last year.

So many, many congratulations to all our staff and pupils. You can view the results later in this publication. Yet every single one of us, whether parents or staff at ESW, wants more than excellent exam results for our children. We want them to develop as well-rounded, happy people for it is that which will indeed help them to lead a great life. So I hope you enjoy this reminder of the achievements of our children in so many different areas over the last year.

Results Overview Many congratulations to all our pupils and staff who worked exceptionally hard and were rewarded with excellent results. This is particularly pleasing in the light of the rising challenge of exams and their content at all levels.

Results at the end of Key Stage 2 were very pleasing, with the vast majority of measures at least in line with national averages, and in many cases significantly above. Blackawton School achieved particularly well, with 88% of its pupils reaching the combined Reading/ Writing/Maths standard compared with 61% nationally.

At A level, all three schools who take these exams improved on their previous performance. A third of students at Coombeshead achieved passes at A*-B grades, just under a half at Teign and over half at Kingsbridge, where 30% of students gained the top two grades of A*-A. Three students from Teign and two from Kingsbridge gained places at Oxford or Cambridge, and a number of students also gained places to read medicine.

GCSE and ‘A’ Level Results Overview GCSE All four secondary schools showed an improvement on last year’s results, an exceptional achievement in the light of the harder exams and new syllabuses. As ever, there are areas where each school can do even better, and we are using the partnerships and support of our family of schools to work at this.

English and Maths moved to a new grading system of 9-1 for the first year, with grade 4 the equivalent of a C. On these measures, Coombeshead increased its 5A*-C including English and Maths by 6% on last year, whilst Teign increased by 3%, Dartmouth by 2% and Kingsbridge by 3%.

The “basics” measure, which combines English and Maths scores, is increasingly important nationally. Dartmouth continued its meteoric rise by 12 % from 53% last year to 65% this year, a record for the school by a long way. Coombeshead and Teign also showed big increases of 8% and 5% respectively, with Kingsbridge moving up to a new high of 82% and a third of all passes at A* and A. We all enjoyed congratulating the students on results’ days!

Year 3 enjoyed a fantastic day out at Merrivale, exploring one of the world’s best Bronze Age ceremonial sites.

Rydon Year 2 pupils had a fantastic trip to Plymouth National Marine Aquarium. The tour guides were brilliant and shared some amazing facts about all the animals and their habitats.

The children really liked seeing the sea creatures such as the octopus, sharks, sting rays, jelly fish and seahorses.

Rydon pupils Year 5 trip to Stover Park Year 5 visited Stover Country Park as part of their Literacy and Science topic work. The day consisted of shelter building and pond dipping as well as looking at the importance of food webs. The children really enjoyed building their shelters from all the logs and sticks they could find. Lots of interesting creatures were found in the pond including tiny newts and beetles, which were all put back safely.

East Allington Primary pupils at Bristol Science Museum

12 KCC students completed a community project living and working with families in Ladakh, Northern India.

From there, the group set off on a trek through the Himalayas before exploring Delhi and the Taj Mahal in Agra.

The trip included meditation with monks in the mountains, seeing the Dalai Lama in the small town of Leh and meeting children at a social project in the slums of Delhi.

Class 3 has a fantastic time visiting @Bristol Science Museum.

The day started with their Forensics Academy workshop, where they made casts of their fingers, used chromatography to identify matching samples, dusted for fingerprints and used microscopes to analyse their skin and clothing samples. Using these new skills, they were then challenged to solve the a murder and visited a crime scene within the building, where they gathered evidence which was then analysed back at the lab.

Arts and Crafts Celebrating Kingsbridge Community College Arts Week

This year’s Arts Week provided students with exciting opportunities to take part in a wide range of enrichment activities, including workshops with visiting Ceramicist Taja, Digital Artist Tony Minnion; pottery throwing with Mary from ‘Crazy About Clay’ in Dartington & a drawing workshop with International artist and illustrator Sarah Beetson.

The Arts Soirée was a superb event that showcased the diverse talents of our creative students in Art, Media, Music, Photography and Textiles.

Students fromTeign school represented Teignbridge at the newly named South West Games in Okehampton. Those competing ranged from Year 7 to Year 12 and in a range of sports; U18 Netball, ability games, Girls Rugby, Girls Football, Gymnastics and Badminton.

Congratulations to our beautiful Year 6 Kingswear leavers who excelled themselves with their performance of ‘Goodbye my Friend’.

East Allington Sharpie Art! Class 2 used tin foil and Sharpie pens to create some stunning abstract art work.

Kingswear pupils topic work on ‘Coriolanus’ As part of their topic work on ‘Coriolanus’, the children in Dolphins have been thinking about the importance of different roles within organisations. This all helped them to understand the importance of the social hierarchy of Ancient Rome.

The children discussed how different organisations have different titles to suggest seniority. Each group was given a different organisation to research (Army, RAF, Royal Navy, the Royal Family and the U.K. Government).
