Celebrate Campus Sustainability Day 2017 his Fall, celebrate Something at Noon and Campus Sustainability Day at the Doble Quad! Join the Office of Sustainability, Campus Activities Board, Lesley’s Garden Club, local vendors, and musicians October 18th 11:30AM -1:30PM. Bon AppÊtit will be serving a sustainable lunch at noon. A live performance of Hot Tamales Brass Band begins at noon. The Boston-based band plays traditional New Orleans jazz, dixieland, jazz funeral and funky second line music. Additionally, the band will hold a master class at 11:00 in Marran Theater. Stop by for a demonstration of their instruments and try them out!

Ride Smarter with these MassBike & MassDot Safety Tips: Give Yourself Some Space: You've got a legal right to the road, so use it; take the full lane when needed, stay away from car doors, and don't squeeze between lanes. Two bicyclists can ride side-by-side, but get into single file if cars can't pass safely.

Go With The Flow: Ride in the same direction as other traffic, and ride as straight as you can; don't weave between parked cars or into crosswalks.

Take A Break: Stopping at red lights and stop signs gives you a chance to relax, chat with the biker behind you, and set a good example for everyone else on the road.

Light Up The Night: Lights help you see where you're going, but it's more about everyone else seeing you.

Walkers Go First: If you run into a pedestrian, it doesn't matter who was right or wrong, it just hurts.

Get Some Head Insurance: We hope you'll never need your helmet, but the one time you do, there is no substitute. Your brain is your most important piece of safety equipment.

Clean Composting Starts Here his past Spring, the Office of Sustainability teamed up with Episcopal Divinity School to promote Clean Composting at Lesley. The materials we put into our compost have a major impact on how well the composting process works and the quality of the final compost. Even though some material is labeled “compostable” such as cups, plates, cutlery, and to-go containers, the processing facilities cannot effectively handle high volumes of these non-food items. These items are considered “contamination” and should be recycled or if heavily soiled placed in the trash. Please help us keep our composting “clean” and compost food scraps only.

4.7 Hard-To-Recycle-Items + Battery recycling located at Student Center, Sherrill Library, University Hall Public Safety, Lunder Arts Center, and Human Resources + Contact sustainability@lesley.edu to recycle appliances, electronics, Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs), computers, printers, cell phones, ink/toner cartridges, and more! + The Career Resource Center collects specific items including: foil-lined energy bar wrappers; foil-lined granola bar wrappers; foil-lined meal replacement bar wrappers; foil-lined protein bar wrappers; foil-lined diet bar wrappers; Clif Bar & Co. wrappers from Clif Bars, Luna Bars, MOJO, Builders, Crunch, Clif Kid Z-Bar, Kits Organic, Clif Kid Z-Fruit, Shot Bloks, Shot Gels, and Shot Drinks; pouches from Clif Organic Energy Food and sending to TerraCycle. If you would like, please send these specific items to Doble Hall 4th floor and address to Shayna Silva. Additionally, please send toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, hair care and skin care packaging, floss containers, deodorants, and cosmetics 23 Mellen 2nd floor and address to Chelsea Willis. Please be sure to include your contact information with all deliveries!

Energy Efficiency Upgrades At University Hall his past summer, Lesley replaced all fluorescent lamps in University Hall with energy efficient LED bulbs. This project will provide Lesley with significant energy savings as well as improved lighting building wide. The 1,429 pounds of fluorescent lamps were recycled. In 2014, Lesley converted the exterior lighting to LED. Additional upgrades included, new heat pumps which heat and cool the space, as well as occupancy and daylighting sensors to reduce excess energy consumption. While strides have been made through projects such as these, there are still many opportunities to improve energy performance at Lesley and maintain that performance over time.

The Science and Ethics of Food & Farming class, led by Professor Aileen Bellwood, is working on a Community Outreach Project focused on addressing the state of the Lesley Urban Farm. The Farm’s raised beds, built in 2008 by a group of Lesley students, are falling apart and a number of problems, including possible exposure to lead soil, need to be addressed. The Farm also suffers from lack of several key elements including storage space, a composting system and a water collection system.

Lesley Urban Farm Redesign And Rebuild For the Community Outreach Project, students Sam Flavin, Sarah Gabriel and Royce Ijac plan to: + Assess and document the current state of the Lesley Urban Farm + Generate new design that accounts for current problems and future needs + Create a budget to determine the cost of materials and labor for the design + Reach out to the Lesley Community to gather support and to Lesley administrators and faculty to pinpoint possible sources of funding 15
