UMJCA FIFTH ANNUAL CHARITY AUCTION HONORING BEHROUZ BEN & JOE HAKIMIAN A Note about our Honorees‌ This year, the UMJCA is very pleased to honor two of our distinguished community members who have been instrumental in the development of several of our community buildings. These brothers have given their time, energy, and resources to help create synagogues and gathering places for our community, which have helped strengthen our Jewish values & Mashadi tradition.
Behrouz & Joe Hakimian moved from Iran to the United States in 1961. Like many others, after spending several months with friends and family in Queens, they moved to the Midwest for college education, and moved back to New York after graduation. Behrouz worked for several years at prominent architectural firms before becoming a developer, and after successfully completing several projects, he asked Joe, who was a successful structural engineer, to join in partnership. The Hakimian Organization was born. A few years later, in the late 1970’s (during the period of the Revolution in Iran) when the small Mashadi Community became more established in America, the community called on the brothers (who by then had then done several real estate development projects together) to help build our first Mashadi Synagogue in the United
States: Shaare Tova of Queens.
They helped develop the plans, obtain approvals, and did the construction management for the 25,000 square foot building, which contained a gym, a library,
a catering hall, and a sprawling sanctuary with 40 foot ceilings. Since then, they have served on several Boards, various Subcommittees, and have helped build Shaare Shalom and Ohr Esther. They also regularly help maintain and give
guidance on major capital improvements on all of our properties. On behalf of the entire community, we would like to thank them for their incredible contributions to our people. They have helped establish places of worship, recreation, and the general advancement of our Jewish values and Mashadi tradition. The prayers and deeds of thousands have echoed through their halls. May their actions inspire future volunteers, and May Hashem reward them for their incredible deeds.
Joe & Janet Hakimian Behrouz & Suzy Hakimian
Behrouz Ben Hakimian Behrouz was born in 1942, in Iran. After moving to the USA, Behrouz moved to Kansas to study Architecture. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in architecture, worked at several prestigious architectural firms in New York, including Urich Franzen, Conclin & Rossant, and others, before turning professional developer. He went back to Iran in the Summer of 1970 to meet his future wife, Suzy. The couple had three sons together: Rex, Shawn, and Jason. After building Shaare Tova, Behrouz sat on the first Shaare Tova Board. He then served on the UMJCA Central Board for two terms, and served as officer. He currently sits on the UMCJA Decorating Committee. Additionally, Ben has volunteered for several other charities and boards. He gave the commencement speech for his alma mater in Kansas State University, where he encouraged students to “think big”, a message which resonated with much of the youth. Behrouz’s vision for maintaining Mashadi unity was always through the use of ‘big box’ buildings: to keep members of varying observance levels, etc, under one roof, as much as possible. He always believed that our community had a special inclusive quality, where people of varying religious levels, financial means, and statuses could congregate and interact. He was careful to avoid smaller sanctuaries and small remote satellites – a precept which was reflected in the sizes of the sanctuaries on the synagogues that he had a hand in. Additionally, Behrouz has always been passionate about maintaining a very high standard for our community buildings. For Shaare Shalom, he was extremely meticulous on details, making sure that every
vendor and every material met the proper standards and was only of the highest quality. In general, he has vied to keep a high quality aesthetic in all sanctuaries and ancillary spaces, and directly designed & donated the modern chandelier at Ohr Esther.
Joe Hakimian Joe was born in 1940, in Iran. After moving to the USA, Joe moved to Kentucky to study Engineering. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky, and started working at a prestigious Structural engineering firm in New York called Pope, Evans & Robbins. He obtained his status as a Licensed Professional Engineer, before finally joining Behrouz to form the Hakimian Organization. He went back to Iran in 1969 to meet his wife, Janet. The couple had three children together: Sharleen, Adam, and Michael. After building Shaare Tova, Joe sat on the first Shaare Tova Board, which pre-dated the first UMJCA Central Board. He has remained actively involved, helping on several community projects, and most recently with the logistics and planning for the purchase of our latest cemetery lot at Montefiore. He was the keynote speaker for the Mashadi graduation several years ago, where he emphasized the importance and power of higher education. Joe has always been passionate about efficiently running and managing all of our community buildings. He always treated Kanissa money as “G-d’s money”, and was meticulous in getting the most aggressive pricing for all capital projects. When the quote for the emergency generator work for Shaare Shalom came in too expensive, he directly subcontracted the work to reduce costs. When the fire alarm at Shaare Rachamim was having issues, he investigated and managed a repair instead of a costly replacement, saving substantial funds. Whenever maintenance contractors were derelict or unreasonably expensive, he would bring in the vendors from his business to help. Joe is regularly consulted with by the various Kanissa boards, as well as various community members who seek building guidance, and is always glad to help when he can.
