uring a recent conversation with Beatrice Davis, 2017 winner of the Bibo (Beauty In Beauty Out) Reflection Award and consultant to the stars, she talked about how important it is to define your story if you want to get an interview or speaking engagement. Beatrice expressed her concern for authors and artists that don’t understand what their story is. “How can I represent them if they don’t have a story?” Davis asks.
Besides her current company, Sassy B Worldwide Productions, Davis has enjoyed a very successful career as a tour manager, entertainment coordinator and consultant for athletes and artists including B.B. King, Ray Charles, Liza Minnelli, Elton John, Common (she has a great story about developing Common’s story) Will Smith, Ice and many more including former basketball player Dennis Rodman.

s we go into the holiday season, we will celebrate our thanks for all we have. We are thankful for our families, friends and what we have accomplished as we have grown another year older. This time of the season, families get together to share in each other's warmth emotionally and, hopefully, joyfully. I'm especially thankful to have been born in a country that allows me to pursue my dreams and goals without, for the most part, any interference from an overdomineering government. However, we have seen in recent news stories that there are people who take advantage of their positions of power and could care less about the dreams of those they deem "below them". They use their perceived subordinates for their own pleasure, or try to, and then they're done with them. Right now, I'm thankful these "humans" are being exposed for what they are and we should all remember to treat each other with respect no matter what station in life we are. I would hope as we express our thanks, we would also remember. Remember that this is a time of the season where depression can be especially hard for those that are alone at this time of the year. I mention this and these recent news stories because they can be tied together. When folks have had their dreams smashed, have been taken advantage of, have lost jobs or loved ones, this is the toughest time of the year for them.

Thanks and Remembrance "comedian's" words to hurt my working relationship with said friend. There have been some tough times in 2017, but that's the case in every year that we live.
These are days of reflection as we end one year to begin another. I have dealt with the negative, now on to the positive. I have made and continue to make some great connections across the spectrum. Together, with a great group of people, we built an amazing project, The NSAEN Online Film Festival, which was a great learning experience that I hope continues. I was involved with several different film projects, some came to fruition this year, some which will come out next year. I'm thankful for the wonderful friends, family and colleagues I have in my life and will remember everything we have done for each other.
I'm thankful for my God-given talents and also that God continues to teach me. I'm so far from learning everything, but every new revelation is amazing to me. Thanks to all those who have supported me over the years in whatever way they can. There are people who have kept (Continued on page 8)
I have chosen to work in one of the toughest career fields (entertainment) and can identify with how tough this time of the year can be. I was recently stabbed in the back by a comedian who is further up the ladder than myself to someone I work for quite a bit. hated to see 2017 slip away so fast and honestly I never got a good feeling about what kind of year to expect. Back in January on my walks with my dog, Tito, I began noticing a clicking in my knee - a noticeable, annoying clicking. Even my dog was aware something was amiss. I put it off as long as I could but was sternly advised by my wife to have a doctor see to it. Well, the x -rays showed there was a ‘Bone on Bone’ disaster in the process of crippling my left knee ball and socket mechanism that would not go away. The damage would never go away, and the process was thus begun. The doctor did mention that the x-ray on my right knee showed much more of the same degeneration and was actually worse. So, what was the immediate future for my leg? I talked with my friends and family about knee reconstruction, ball joint replacement. About all I could garner was that “…what a wonderful, miraculous surgery that is!” Others were not so laudatory. Salves and ointments, injections, and braces were suggested and some were actually used but of limited value. There would be pain. When there is ‘B on B’, the options are severely limited. It won’t get any better! From the pictures in the literature, it looks like an impossible task to take out the degraded knee joint and supporting stuff and replace the entire area with a titanium mechanism that could possibly last forever. At the last possible moment, the medics decided my ‘right’ knee was the worst of the two and it was replaced. What followed was a day and a half in the
The Year that Went Away... Maybe Not... hospital followed by interminably long physical therapy sessions. But the result is that I can get around without difficulty or much discomfort and there is noticeable improvement, but at a snail’s pace! My thanks go out to the doctors and nurses and supporting friends and family and to the miracle drugs that kept me ahead of the pain as I was advised, but in the process of recovery, my year 2017 simply went away. After the first of next year, the left knee is going to need attention and that could possibly lead to another year going away! After coming to Reno from Charleston, S.C. in 1973 to accept the position of CEO of the Nevada State Medical Association and serving as Director of Physician Relations at Washoe Medical Center for two years, Pugh retired in 1990. Later he helped establish Health Access Washoe County (HAWC) and served as Board Member and President for several years. He has served as Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and authored four books through the History of Medicine Program there. (Continued from page 1)

Pacific War Diary by James J. Fahey
F
rom 1942 to 1945, James Fahey served on board the U.S.S. Montpelier, and recorded his experiences in a diary. This was against regulations so he had to go about it secretly; and yet, as Captain Edward L. Beach stated, “we are all gainers from James Fahey’s violation of this rule”. His book, written from the perspective of an ordinary sailor, gives readers a vivid description of life on board a ship during World War II. The value of Fahey’s diary is not its style or artistry but its authenticity and immediacy. There is often little distance between the written words and what they describe. For example, the November 27, 1944 entry, written that same day, records a Japanese air attack on Fahey’s ship. It is a prose-equivalent of the great D-Day scene in the movie “Saving Private Ryan”. Fahey conveys, effectively and harrowingly, the unrelenting violence of this attack. The roaring planes, about seventy in all, swarm in close, trying to kill with bombs or bullets or torpedoes—or with the planes themselves. It is like something from a Bosch
painting: a chaos of smoke and fire and scattered body parts. Strong and steady as Fahey undoubtedly was, he never talks tough. He is gung-ho without being bloodthirsty; he is realistic without being bitter. The touches of cynicism and sarcasm which appear here and there are lightly articulated; so too his animosity for the enemy. While grim expressions of hatred do occur, Fahey often regards the Japanese fighters with an attitude of grudging respect. And in the end it is not the Japanese people whom he blames for the war but their leaders: “the Military Men”. As a writer, Fahey was not nearly as good as Joseph Heller (also a veteran of World War II); and yet I prefer Fahey by far. For Heller—in his celebrated novel “Catch22”—war is simply a farce. The people who run wars are, always and everywhere, venal, callous, clownish meanies, while the people who fight wars are dupes who lay down their lives for nothing and don’t seem to mind doing so. Of course there are millions of war vets who would, to put it mildly, object to such a characterization; ordinary men and women who are proud

of their military service but do not write books about it. James Fahey, Seaman First Class, is a striking exception to this rule. Here we have a patriotic, hard-working, nonliterary American who, in an almost incidental manner, produced a powerful, historically valuable book. “Pacific War Diary” became a best-seller but Fahey donated all his earnings to the construction of Our Lady of Dolors Catholic Church in India. Instead of pursuing a literary career, he remained a garbage-truck driver in the city of Waltham, Massachusetts. “It’s an honorable profession,” he said, “and I am happy.” James J. Fahey died in 1991 at the age of seventythree. R.I.P. John Loranger was born in Butte, Montana in 1961 but has spent most of his life in Nevada. He served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1987, then worked for the telephone company before retiring in 2011. He has always enjoyed reading fiction and has published two novels of his own: "The Odyssey of Art O'Hara" and "Lions and Souls: the Story of St. Mary of Egypt". His approach to fiction is best summed up by a quote from Walker Percy: "The first rule of thumb, of course, is pleasure. A good book gives the reader pleasure, the sort of deep, abiding pleasure he likes to come back to."

me going in one way or another and I can only hope I have also done my share of helping as well. We have to lean on each other from time to time, which is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength. We are stronger when we reach out for help, for it's harder to hold out your hand than to simply leave it where it lays.
