Celebrating the Little Things

Celebra ng the Li le Things: I believe this is the mindset of us folks who want to succeed. Let me say first that it's not all about money‐ success, that is. My mindset has evolved and I'm seeing that we measure our own success a lot differently than those who "support" us. I once had someone tell me years ago when I started doing stand‐up comedy that they would come and see me when I got big and famous. "Don't bother" would have been a good response, but a waste of breath. This person represents a small‐minded approach to life. Their children will be told "they won't amount to much" unless they do succeed despite the terrible upbringing. These are the types of people who

never rise above their sta on in life and it's pre y much their own fault, although they are happily ignorant of it. They're the type that scream about "The Rich Folks!!" but never really aspire to be one unless they win really big on Bingo Night. They repeat the same economically terrible decisions as their parents and blame the outside world for their circumstance. Some of the blame does belong on the outside world, but repea ng the same behaviors genera on a er genera on only solidify the grip the outside world has on these folks. They have relinquished their power to change. As Johnny Hotshot said on a show I used to be on called "Pros & Cons", they have the "I Want My MTV" mentality.

Brian has toured the USA, Canada, The Bahamas and Japan for 25 years. He combines menology, character driven material, story telling and improvisa on to form a well‐honed show. He speaks of growing up poor, divorce, rela onships, the military, crazy money making schemes and much, much more. He has worked well known Comedy Clubs, country clubs, resorts, cruise ships, special events, military installa ons and private events! Greg Smith How many mee ngs have you been to that are just the same old thing — boring gatherings you cannot wait to leave? Most team mee ngs are poorly managed and non‐produc ve. I have been a teacher, management consultant, and mee ng facilitator for over twenty years. In the hundreds of classes and seminars I have taught, I have learned one truth — people get more out of your mee ngs if you mix in a li le fun. By using team building exercises and icebreakers you can make your next mee ng, class, or team building event something dynamic and fun. It is wise to consider a few basic elements before choosing a team building exercise or a mee ng ice breaker. Ownership — First, icebreakers tend to work best when par cipants have taken ownership of the ac vity chosen by the facilitator. You must put five key elements in place. 1.Explain the ac vity. 2. Provide the goals of the ac vity. 3. Outline the structure of the ac vity. 4. Allow me for ques ons. 5. Give permission to par cipate at their comfort level. This last element is crucial and overlooked in many cases. Make an announcement at the beginning of an exercise to insure par cipants understand they are not “bound” to par cipate in the ac vity or team mee ng. For those who opt out, perhaps ask them to be “observers” and see if they are comfortable providing a debriefing at the end of the event. Provide them something construc ve to do during the exercise. When given the freewill to choose, people will take greater ownership of their par cipa on. Set the Climate — Icebreakers set the climate for the event to proceed. With this understanding, it makes sense to choose an icebreaker that is in alignment with the climate of the mee ng. An ice breaker or team building exercise could send a wrong message. The unintended message could send the mee ng in a different direc on.

What’s the Story?TM Share it! Page 5

How to Use Team Building Exercises and Icebreakers Therefore, it makes sense to spend the me to choose the proper mee ng icebreaker. Learning Objec ves — Some trainers and team facilitators prefer using either a mee ng ice breaker or team building exercise focused on the learning objec ves related to the mee ng, training program, or goal of the group. Others prefer using an unrelated exercise just to break the ice. However, each icebreaker is dynamic and has both intended and unintended consequences. Consider this prior to the event so you can maximize the experience and build a cohesive mee ng. Safety — The first rule is not to take any chances that could cause physical injury to your par cipants. One of my favorite team building ac vi es is called the “Terrorist Toxic Popcorn Situa on.” This is an easy team ac vity for both adults and teens. The goal is to decontaminate a can of “toxic” popcorn that has been secretly placed in the room by “terrorists.” Your team must quickly come up with a plan of ac on; assemble tools and equipment, transfer the material into a “safe” container before the “toxic” substance explodes. This is a great game to iden fy the planners, doers, and thinkers in your group. It also demonstrates the importance of having a good plan. Free Team Building Exercises and Icebreakers: A Great Day for Hats! Give each par cipant a donut‐shaped piece of felt or other material approximately 18 inches in diameter. Tell par cipants to form a hat with the material. Par cipants Continued on page 11

Two Works by J.D. Salinger

Call it ge ng old, but I’m not the fan I once was of “The Catcher in the Rye”. Holden Caulfield, the novel’s hero, strikes me now as an unsympathe c character solely preoccupied with approving or disapproving of everything and everyone he comes across. However, such disenchantment on my part does not apply where at least two other works of fic on by Salinger are concerned. The first one, For Esme—with Love and Squalor, begins with an American man describing a minor event from his past while serving in the Army during World War II. On a rainy day in April of ’44 this man had visited a tearoom in Devon, England and subsequently enjoyed an impromptu encounter with a girl named Esme. In the course of this mee ng, the girl learns that the American is a writer and she asks him to write a story dedicated exclusively to her. Where subject ma er is concerned, she says that he may write about anything so long as it is

not childish or silly and that “squalor” be included. The soldier is not sure what to make of this eccentric request, but he promises to try wri ng such a story just for Esme. The narra ve then shi s from first to third person as the “squalid” part begins. It is set in Bavaria, in the a ermath of the Allied victory in Europe, and concerns a soldier designated Staff Sergeant X who is quietly crumbling to pieces—a result of war trauma. With masterful understatement, Salinger (himself a WWII veteran) portrays the devasta on of war with greater effect than most authors can accomplish in hundreds of pages loaded with grisly descrip ons of combat. Something close to perfec on is a ained in For Esme—with Love and Squalor. But like a classic piece of Haiku, it has to be read and savored slowly. The second work, Franny and Zooey, concerns the spiritual Continued on page 8

crisis of a young college student and aspiring actress named Franny Glass, who is sickened by rampant ego sm. But Franny, (unlike Holden Caulfield) clearly recognizes that this human defect she has come to know and hate is present in her as much as it is in anyone else. As a consequence, she seeks solace in a certain book that had been a part of her family’s library throughout her childhood. The book is called The Way of a Pilgrim: a classic work on prayer that was wri en by an anonymous Russian peasant in the 1800s. The prospect of spiritual transforma on or rebirth is drawing Franny toward a life of prayer and away from ac ng. Franny’s older brother, Zooey Glass, is also an actor. He subjects his sister’s change of voca on to a severe examina on; and yet his inten ons are genuinely good. It is not the usual reject‐the‐delusions‐of‐religion that readers might expect. In fact, Zooey guides Franny toward an encounter with God via her ar s c gi s. John Updike, a writer I admire, wrote a review about Franny and Zooey that was largely, though not exclusively, nega ve. I read this review recently and must

acknowledge that some of its nega ve points are valid. Moreover, I am sure that my own persistently posi ve response to Franny and Zooey has to do with the way I was feeling when I first read it more than three decades ago. But that ming itself has personal significance. At twenty, I experienced Salinger’s book as a healing an dote to the hos lity or apathy toward religion that pervaded modern literature and cinema and the lives of many people around me. John Loranger was born in Bu e, Montana in 1961 but has spent most of his life in Nevada. He served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1987, then worked for the telephone company before re ring in 2011. He has always enjoyed reading fic on and has published two novels of his own: "The Odyssey of Art O'Hara" and "Lions and Souls: the Story of St. Mary of Egypt". His approach to fic on is best summed up by a quote from Walker Percy: "The first rule of thumb, of course, is pleasure. A good book gives the reader pleasure, the sort of deep, abiding pleasure he likes to come back to."

Fuel You Will Need

“Walk the Turtle”

As the wheels roll down the highways of our spinning minds, around the twists and turns of scenic routes inside the GPS of our souls, we feel the breeze of me. At peace and in control, becoming one with the road, above the white lines underneath we follow these painted signs seen from the lenses of our darkened shades. The feelings of spirit we feel inside the fast lanes of life, our hands are gripped upon the wheel, we look ahead and punch the pedal to fly forward into our des na on. We each are equipped with a unique energy signature created by a compassionate power of poe c love connected to a universal language of our human journey. Those that shared your ride in certain brief moments le behind become a past memory, a snapshot taken deep inside the mind is kept inside our soul forever.

Walk the turtle and follow your heart, allow it to take you to your dream, you may break down some mes, but on your way just pray; that is the fuel you will need.

You can also put people on teams and have some friendly compe on between the groups on who can come up with the most crea ve hat. Le ers and Names Give each person a few moments to think of an adjec ve star ng with the same first le er in his or her first

The Napkin Game Ask par cipants to form equal size groups. Give each group a napkin and ask them to fold the napkin as small as possible. However, it must be large enough for members of the team to place their toe on the napkin. Paper‐Tearing Exercise This mee ng icebreaker only takes about 5 minutes to conduct. Give everyone a blank 8 ½‐by‐11‐inch sheet of paper. Tell them the following: “We are going to do something that will show us some important things about communica on. Now tear off the upper right‐hand corner. Fold it in half again and tear off the upper le hand corner of the sheet. Fold it in half again. Now tear off the lower right‐hand corner of the sheet.” A er the tearing is complete, say something like “Now open your eyes, and let’s see what you have. If I did a good job of communica ng and you did a good job of following my direc ons, all of your sheets should look the same!” Hold your sheet up for them to see. It is highly unlikely any sheet will match yours exactly. Ask the group why no one’s piece of paper matched yours. You will probably get responses like “You didn’t let us ask ques ons!” or “Your direc ons could be interpreted in different ways.” Then, lead them in a discussion about the need for effec ve communica on.
