Our Story...
Leratong Community Health Projects (NPO: 224-188) was established in 2019 serving the community of Ekurhuleni, Heidelberg and surrounding informal settlements, initiated from a concept to place young healthcare workers and support the community health infrastructure it soon developed into projects dedicated to enhancing community health and wellness.
The original primary project centered around HTS services including HIV Testing, Screening of Hypertension; asthma; Diabetes and sexually transmitted infections. The services are freely available to the community, and the team’s innovation soon led to researching and actioning additional services as we strive for healthier, empowered communities.
Today Leratong Community Health Projects is a non-profit organization committed to improving the health and wellness of our community, holistically. Our projects focus on enhancing the infrastructure to provide quality services for all members of the community, ensuring access to essential healthcare and support for a healthier, thriving community
“Leratong” is taken from the Sesotho word meaning a place of love and it is rapidly developing into a haven of health and wellness support for each community we serve, employing young people trained in health and wellness support services including, counselors, peer educators and healthcare workers.
Our Work
We are currently running three main projects:
The facility Infrastructure support program which supports clinicians in public health facilities with innovative programming to ease the delays in services, educate patients and empower them to take an active part in their health.
Engaging Community healthcare program with our healthcare workers going out into communities to educate on health conditions, doing screenings to encourage early detection and linkage to care Our outreach programs reach communities in their homes, churches, taxi ranks, schools, stokvels, etc.
Peer education and linkage programs reinforces our commitment to equity in the quality of service in health and wellness. We support, encourage and walk beside all members of our communities in need while drawing attention to and working towards reducing the stigma associated with some of the illnesses
Our people centered service ethos ensures the value of every member of the community is served by addressing barriers that keep the most vulnerable members of our communities from accessing available services

Our perspective
Health and Wellness - Our Perspective
45,5% unemployment rate among young individuals (aged 15-34 years), in contrast to the national average of 32,9% in the first quarter of 2024. - statssa.
47,0% of South African women were recorded as economically inactive. This means that almost half of the working age women in South Africa are out of the labor force compared to 35,6% of their male counterparts
The latest global labor force participation rate for women is about 47% compared to 72% for men (ILO,2022). The productive potential of South Africa women in the labor market remains unused.
The areas that are hardest hit by gender-based violence tend to be those that are also most affected by poverty.
“South Africa carries a huge burden of mental illnesses with the most prevalent being anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, mood disorders and depression. People with mental health conditions often face neglect in the health system as well as stigma” - indexmedicus - Mental health care - a public health priority in South Africa.pdf
Access to health care
About 80% of South Africa’s population depends on the public sector’s primary care services. But access to this primary care in the public sector is often limited by the sheer number of patients It’s also restricted by opening times that do not cater for people who are working or become sick during evenings or on weekends. https://theconversation.com/why-fixing-primary-health-care-is-crucial-to-makingsouth-africa-healthier-114835
ProgramGoals
Our outcomes
Skills Development:
Unemployed young people and women in particular are provided with relevant skills within the health and wellness sector to improve their opportunities of accessing the economy either through employment or as social entrepreneurs.
The outcome is a reduction in the adverse social effects of unemployment such as drug & alcohol abuse, health problems and crime by young people who are employed, empowered and being capacitated
Education:
We work towards creating a positive and empowered environment within healthcare community , by breaking down the barriers created the scientific nature of the sector through clear language where possible and using available resources to encourage community members to play an active role in their health and wellness. Our primary focus is sectors of communities acutely affected for example - chronic patients and people who inject drugs amongst others

We are actively servicing over 30 areas within these communities, with plans to access more areas
