Leratong Community Health Projects (NPO: 224-188) was established in 2019 serving the community of Ekurhuleni, Heidelberg and surrounding informal settlements
Leratong was initiated by Mrs. MaChristmas Molete who served as a healthcare professional in the private and government healthcare sector for many years. During her retirement she engaged young people in her community who were interested in healthcare but had no formal training and ultimately registered a school for healthcare support services.
With her first set of graduates the challenge now seemed to be placement, as not all her former students were placed in formal healthcare and yet there were gaps in community healthcare The ideal solution would be one that supports the community health infrastructure without much impact on its over-stretched budget
Leratong Community Health Projects developed from an initiative to place young healthcare workers in the working environment and support the community health infrastructure and soon developed into projects dedicated to enhancing community health and wellness while empowering community
The first Leratong project centered around HTS services including HIV Testing, screening of hypertension; asthma; diabetes and sexually transmitted infections Our services are freely available to the community, and the team’s innovation soon led to researching and actioning additional services and we now have team members placed in community healthcare facilities while others do outreach in homes, as we strive for healthier, empowered communities.
Today Leratong Community Health Projects is a non-profit organization committed to improving the health and wellness of our community, holistically. Our projects focus on enhancing the infrastructure to provide quality services for all members of the community, ensuring access to essential healthcare and support for a healthier, thriving community.
“Leratong” is taken from the Sesotho word meaning a place of love and it is rapidly developing into a haven of health and wellness support for each community we serve, employing young people trained in health and wellness support services including, counselors, peer educators and healthcare workers.
Leratong’s team is also staffed with beneficiaries of the projects as we have young people developing skills in healthcare support services, counselling, data handling and communication all while providing essential support services for their communities
It is a blessing to work on projects that benefit our communities as our directive for growth is solely based on the development of our communities.
It is said that “ necessity is the mother of invention” and that has been proven accurate in our case where new ideas of what needs to be addressed are always shared within the team and around the communities.

45,5% unemployment rate among young individuals (aged 15-34 years), in contrast to the national average of 32,9% in the first quarter of 2024. - statssa.
47,0% of South African women were recorded as economically inactive. This means that almost half of the working age women in South Africa are out of the labor force compared to 35,6% of their male counterparts
The latest global labor force participation rate for women is about 47% compared to 72% for men (ILO,2022). The productive potential of South Africa women in the labor market remains unused.
The areas that are hardest hit by gender-based violence tend to be those that are also most affected by poverty.
“South Africa carries a huge burden of mental illnesses with the most prevalent being anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, mood disorders and depression. People with mental health conditions often face neglect in the health system as well as stigma” - indexmedicus - Mental health care - a public health priority in South Africa.pdf
About 80% of South Africa’s population depends on the public sector’s primary care services. But access to this primary care in the public sector is often limited by the sheer number of patients It’s also restricted by opening times that do not cater for people who are working or become sick during evenings or on weekends. https://theconversation.com/why-fixing-primary-health-care-is-crucial-to-makingsouth-africa-healthier-114835
Unemployed young people and women in particular are provided with relevant skills within the health and wellness sector to improve their opportunities of accessing the economy either through employment or as social entrepreneurs.
The outcome is a reduction in the adverse social effects of unemployment such as drug & alcohol abuse, health problems and crime by young people who are employed, empowered and being capacitated
Education:
We work towards creating a positive and empowered environment within healthcare community , by breaking down the barriers created the scientific nature of the sector through clear language where possible and using available resources to encourage community members to play an active role in their health and wellness. Our primary focus is sectors of communities acutely affected for example - chronic patients and people who inject drugs amongst others
Our Psycho-Social support and peer education plays a critical role within our community development model. Our beneficiaries are encouraged and supported to use resources within their environment to resolve their own problem, identify triggers and manage their health and wellness
In support of Primary Healthcare Clinics and through our linkages to them and other related Psycho-Social service providers, we implement basic healthcare solutions for our communities at large. HIV/AIDS, TB and general health screenings. Our current target areas are township communities in Lesedi and Ekurhuleni municipalities in Gauteng.
We are actively servicing over 30 areas within these communities, with plans to access more areas
