But in navigating the our way in daily life, we are not that aware of hearing as an independent sensory channel because it is so tied up in a convergence of the aural, visual and kinaesthetic sense, all of which govern habitation and physical experience.1

Kinaesthesia (old gr.) is defined as the awareness towards movement, referring to the body’s position whether still or in motion. Unlike proprioception which is unconscious, kinaesthesia represents the active awareness of the body’s position and movement in space and in relationship to the surrounding objects. Increasing awareness towards the limbs, muscles or other body parts, while the body engages in motion, changes the perception over the surrounding space.

While paying attention to the body’s movement, at the same time one becomes more aware of the sonic environment that surrounds him or her.

The cabin is mobile, thus unstable. In trying to place herself in, the performer is faced with a crowded and the misbalanced space. This turns the cabin into an uncertain structure, not easy to match.

This draws attention to movements, particularly to those that are determined by the shape of the space, the surface and the shape of the elements contained by it. This is a small scale example of the way we use the built environment, where movements are ruled by architectonic, urbanistic and designed structures.

Instruction: The four shapes that you see represent the kinaesthetic cabin. If you bring the four modules together and assemble them, you will obtain a rectangular cavity.

Place yourself inside the cavity. Try to make fit within this structure. How do you feel? It might not feel comfortable. Do you find it difficult to stay inside? You are experiencing a spatial structure which forces its shape upon your own body.
