When Trudeau took office in 2015, promises were made to improve the lives and status of the indigenous people. First Nations believe these promises were broken and nothing was mended. Trudeau pledged billions of dollars be put towards improving their health care and safety, however, none of this was implemented in reality, stressing on the situation. This even led to aboriginals protesting on July 1, Canada day festivities and building up a tent on Parliament Hill. In an attempt of reconciliation, Trudeau split the federal indigenous and northern affairs ministry into two separate sections with two senior ministers in charge. With Carolyn Bennett, the former Indigenous Affairs minister, heading major changes to be made on government policies towards the tribes and confirming their rights in the government.
