THE CAPE TOWN AND WINELANDS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL THE 1st PREVIEW FILM FESTIVAL Now
in its 6th year the Cape Town and Winelands International Film Festival (CTWIFF) celebrates its expanded role in the South African film industry with a Preview (Non-Competitive) Film Festival in 2013 to be followed by the competitive Cape Town & Winelands International Film Festival, (6 -16 March 2014) as well as the inaugural Cape Town Film Mart (CTFM) on 7-9 March 2014. The objective of the CTFM is to bring local producers together with potential partners and financiers from South Africa's co-production partners: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. The Department of Trade and Industry, Wesgro and the Western Cape Government's Department of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism and Ster Kinekor Cinema Nouveau V&A Waterfront are major partners of the 2014 festival and we would like to thank them in advance. The festival remains an important forum for South African cinema and we are proud to present the premierè of the Afrikaans feature film by Paul Eilers (Stuur Groete aan Mannetjies Roux), as well as 30 new South African short films and documentaries by emerging filmmakers in the Class of 2013 competition. We are proud to present several award winning films from the Arab speaking countries in this year's Preview Festival, which includes films like Merzak Allouache's The Repentant, Susan Youssef's Habibi and the moving documentary A World Not Ours.
Extraordinary
films such as Ali Blue Eyes, Five Dances, Matterhorn, The Invisible Men, The Last Match and Snails in the Rain will be screened. A major theme this year is the experiences of children, teenagers and young adults, from sensitive coming of age films for example Kauwboy to masterful films about grief and loss such as Hide Your Smiling Faces and House With a Turret. .

Some of the highlights of this year's programme include the Palme d'Or winner at Cannes 2013, Blue Is the Warmest Colour (La Vie d'Adèle – Chapitres 1 & 2 – The Life of Adèle – Chapters 1 & 2) and a selection of excellent contemporary Italian films like How Strange to be named Federico ( Che Strano Chiamarsi Federico) and The Referee (L’Arbitro). The selection of outstanding features and documentaries include many films, which attempt to create a better understanding between human beings, to enhance respect for different ideological and religious viewpoints, as well as deconstructing stereotypes of “The Other”.

ALì BLUE EYES (Alì Ha Gli Occhi Azzurri) Director: Claudio Giovannesi Country: Italy Year: 2012 Running Time: 98 min Cast: Nader Sarhan, Stefano Rabatti, Brigitte Apruzzesi, Marian Valenti Adrian Nader, a 16-year-old Italian-born son of Egyptian Muslim parents, is at the centre of this powerful tale of a young man caught between his peers and his cultural roots. In love with Italian girl Brigitte, he defies family wishes by running away from home. When his hotheaded friend Stefano gets into a fight, Nader stabs a young Romanian in his defence, forcing Nader to flee and go into hiding. Spending his days cold, hungry and afraid he avoids the wounded victim's family, who are now seeking revenge. The title, Alì Blue Eyes, comes from the seminal writer, intellectual and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini's poem 'Prophesy'. The neorealist style and backdrop all acknowledge this great director's influence. Director Claudio Giovannesi developed this multi-award winning feature film from his documentary, Brothers of Italy, using many of the real-life characters in the fictional film. Sarhan won the best young actor award at the Angers European First Film Festival. His portrayal of a second-generation immigrant is raw and real, made even more true thanks to family and friends playing themselves in a story strongly based on their own lives. Antonio + Silvana = 2 Director: Simone Aleandri , Vanni Gandolfo, Luca Onorati Country: Italy Year: 2011 Running Time: 71 min DOCUMENTARY They were once a couple, but good-natured Antonio was frightened off by Silvana's tempestuous and flamboyant character. And now, at the age of 77, Antonio is in a rest home and 60-year-old Silvana is trying to catch a glimpse of him. By turns angry and excited, Silvana talks to the documentary filmmakers who are following at her heels about her great love that is hiding from her. Silvana's peroxide hair and missing teeth make for a striking appearance that betrays her life of prostitution, drugs and reckless behavior. She deliberates loudly about Antonio's rejection of her and chalks messages to him on her walls - ranging from the obscene and offensive to the poetic and love-drenched. BEN HUR (BENUR- UN GLADIATORE IN AFFITTO) Director: Massimo Andrei Country: Italy Year: 2013 Running Time: 98 min Cast: Nicola Pistoia, Paolo Triestino, Elisabetta De Vito Sergio is an out-of-work stuntman who claims to have once worked on the Hollywood epic Ben Hur, but now makes ends meet dressing up as a centurion at the Colosseum. He shares an apartment with his sister Maria who works from home providing phone sex. One day, Milan, an illegal immigrant from Belarus, enters their lives and everything changes. Milan is keen to take on any odd job he can find, including filling in Sergio's role at the Colosseum while Sergio takes a holiday. Not only is Milan an immediate hit with the tourist crowds, he uses his engineering skills to build a chariot! A French teenage girl discovers love, passion and heartbreak in the arms of another woman. From this simple, not especially unique love story, Kechiche has fashioned an intimate epic in every sense of the term, its every subtle emotional turn rendered widescreen on Exarchopoulos's exquisitely expressive face. Just 19 years old, the actress effortlessly charts Adèle's growth from young adult to young woman. Typically for a Kechiche film, her individual journey is set within a bustling, articulate network of friends, family and food. COLD BLOOM Director: Atsushi Funahashi Country: Japan Year: 2013 Running Time: 119 min Cast: Asami Usuda, Takahiro Miura, Yo Takahashi Shiori, a young woman, is working at the small pressing factory in Hitachi City, a local industrial town, which just starts to recover from the damage caused by the tsunami disaster. She has been living a happy life with Kenji, who is a co-worker and her husband. One day, Shiori gets a phone call from the factory, saying that Kenjo was killed in an accident while he was working at the temporary transfer section. It is said that the accident was caused by Takumi, a young co-worker of Kenji. Shiori, tormented by sudden loneliness, hates Takumi from the bottom of her heart. However, knowing the truth that Takumi was not really responsible for the accident, and seeing Takumi trying to make an effort to atone, Shiori gradually comes to accept Takumi. The factory, which fell into financial difficulties, starts to regain vigour because of the efforts by Takumi. Then Shiori learns that Takumi is going to leave the factory and move to another city. HABIBI Director: Susan Youssef Country: Palestine Year: 2011 Running Time: 93 min Cast: Kais Nashif, Maisa Abd Elhadi and Abd Elhadi. The West Bank setting gives weight to this familiar riff on the doomed young lover scenario. Susan Youssef's Habibi is a raw, immediate work that sometimes suffers because of – but ultimately benefits from – its obvious budgetary constraints and digital lensing. It is based on the epic poem 'Majnun and Layla', a ninth century verse that told of a failed 7th century love affair set against a backdrop of regional conflict (specifically, the defeat of the Byzantines and Persians by the Arabs and the subsequent conquering of Syria and Iraq). Insightfully, Youssef draws parallels to the modern tensions, in particular its impact upon family and society (the random death of a young man is handled with a harsh frankness, indicating just how entrenched violence and grief is in the region). Our 'Romeo' and 'Juliet' here are dreamy artistic spirit Qays and ambitious engineering student Layla. Though from two diametrically opposed backgrounds, they connect over passages of traditional poetry at university. They are kept apart by familial and social forces, yet their love strengthens. HIDE YOUR SMILING FACES Director: Daniel Patrick Carbone Country: USA Year: 2013 Running Time: 81 min Cast: Nathan Varnson, Ryan Jones The young lives of two brothers are vividly depicted as they abruptly come of age through the experience of a friend's mysterious death. The event ripples under the surface of their town, unsettling the brothers and their friends in a way that they can't fully understand. Once familiar interactions begin to take on a macabre tone in light of the tragic accident, leading Eric (14) and Tommy (9) to their own silent debates within their minds that build into seemingly insurmountable moral peaks. HOW STRANGE TO BE NAMED FEDERICO: (CHE STRANO CHIAMARSI FEDERICO) Director: Ettore Scola Country: Italy Year: 2013 Running Time: 93 min Cast: Vittorio Viviani, Sergio Rubini, Antonella Attili, Tommaso Lazotti, Giacomo Lazotti, Combining memoir and archival photos and footage with complete recreation, in How Strange to be Named Frederico: Scola narrates Fellini Scola lovingly depicts his relationship with the young Fellini, who would go on to international fame as the director of masterpieces like La strada, La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2 , and Amarcord. Shooting at Cinecittà's venerable Studio 5, where Fellini himself lensed many of his most famous films, Scola delves back into those moments when the two of them sat in Rome's Cinquecento Square talking about life and future projects, prowled the streets in search of stories, or sat around the offices of Marc'Aurelio deciding what cartoons to publish. Fellini was a true original and, in the affectionate words of his wife Giulietta Masina — as well as his long-time collaborator Marcello Mastroianni — a gigantic liar, but his creative mind turned him into a genius of the medium. The name Fellini became a brand, and Felliniesque an adjective, summoning up a world of outlandish, oversized, carnivalesque reverie, full of eccentric people and extravagant costumes, mixed in with a dash of postwar ennui. HOUSE WITH A TURRET Director: Eva Neymann Country: Ukraine Year: 2012 Running Time: 81 min Cast: Dimitry Kobetskoy, Yekarterina Golubeva, Mikail Vekksler This is the second feature film from German-based Ukrainian director Eva Neyman. The film is based on an autobiographical narrative by well-known screenwriter Fridrikh Gorenshtein (“Solaris”) An eight-year-old boy travels with his mother to visit his grandfather during wartime. The mother, who is lying on the floor in a crowded freight car, has typhus and her condition is getting worse. At an unidentified station, she is placed on a stretcher and four men take her to hospital. In this war-torn setting, surrounded by adults preoccupied with their own survival, the boy must shoulder a man's responsibility, take care of his baggage and get a telegram sent to his grandfather, no matter what the cost. Through a child's eyes, we see a country in chaos, grotesque figures on the verge of losing their humanity and families torn apart by the war. Lithuanian cinematographer Rimvydas Leipus recreates a dream-like atmosphere of WWII-era yearning. The minimalist tale unfolds slowly, with hints of Ukrainian cinema legend Kira Muratova palpable in the atmosphere and dialogue, yet the story's narrative is easy to follow and every scene is emotionally charged and captivating. The boy, played by young actor Dmytro Kobetskoy, discovered in an Odessa orphanage - finds the hospital and stays by his mother's side, but she soon dies, and he starts seeking the way home. Placing his trust in strangers. KAUWBOY Director: Boudewijn Koole Country: Netherlands Year: 2012 Running Time: 78 min Cast: Rick Lens, Loek Peters, Cahit Ölmez One day, 10-year-old Jojo brings home a baby jackdaw. He has to keep the jackdaw hidden from his father who doesn't like having birds in the house. Every now and then, Jojo secretly calls his mother but doesn't tell her about his jackdaw friend. He wants to surprise her with the bird on her birthday, which is around the corner. Jojo's father is adamant that he doesn't want to celebrate the birthday of someone who is not present. Since the father suffers from violent mood swings, Jojo has to be very careful. He must now learn to be a big boy. Jean's father is always busy at work, so he spends most of his time with his nanny Yvette and neighbour Michelle. His mother is away but nobody talks about her. Luckily Michelle is on hand to read postcards about Mum's Wild West escapades and, even though they seem far fetched at times, they keep Jean happy. At school, the steel marbles Jean takes from his father's factory are valuable playground currency but their removal from the factory has unexpected consequences. This delightful, bittersweet animated film, based on the best-selling children's story by Jean Regnaud and Emile Bravo, is a joyous, thought-provoking tale about childhood loss and the need even for adults to hide from the truth at times. THE FUTURE (IL FUTURO) Director: Alicia Scherson Country: Canada Year: 2012 Running Time: 72 min Cast: Roberto Vilar, Eve Majzels, Alek Rzeszowski, Darcy Fehr Devastated by the loss of their parents, newly orphaned teens Bianca and Tomás face an uncertain future. The two new acquaintances soon move in with the siblings and while they bring a semblance of structure to the chaotic household, they also offer an opportunity the brother and sister seemingly can't refuse: scamming a wealthy recluse and former action-movie star named Maciste. Framed as a crime drama, Il Futuro is much more. Their stories are told through the film's heroes: Louie, 32 years old, a gay Palestinian who has been hiding in Tel Aviv for the past 8 years; Abdu, 24 years old, who was exposed as gay in Ramallah and then accused of espionage and tortured by Palestinian security forces; Faris, 23 years old, who escaped to Tel Aviv from the West Bank after his family tried to kill him. When his friends were discussing about Tokyo, he couldn't help but make up stories about his visit. Although he has never been to Tokyo before, he swears to bring the photos after the weekend to prove himself. By pretending to visit a future university, he is given money by his mother and reluctantly sets off for Tokyo. However, this simple plan goes wrong due to a series of events, which results in him missing the plane home. As he decides to sleep over night at the airport, a middle-aged shop assistant Masami calls out to him. The homecoming of young Matzutzi, who had emigrated, thoroughly shakes up the season, and Atletico Pabarile starts winning one match after another, thanks to the prowess of its new undisputed champion. The film cuts back and forth between the story of the two teams and the rising international career of Cruciani, an ambitious referee at the highest echelons of his profession, as well as the subplot in which two cousins playing for Montecrastu are involved in a feud linked to the archaic codes of sheep breeding. He gets a job at a café and begins to reintegrate into society, but when a pharmacist acquaintance asks Rashid to reveal secrets about his family, his life takes an unforgettable and emotional turn. A precise narrative style and distinguished performances from the cast allow Allouache to place viewers at the heart of this engaging and deeply touching story. Yet each one of them came face to face with the price of war when their daughters were killed in the conflict. Instead of seeking revenge, they set out on a joint journey to humanize the very enemy which took the dearest thing from them and prevent the cycle of retaliation in themselves and their societies. Along the way they reveal the friendship and humour that keeps them alive. The film follows their two parallel stories and the moments where they converge, both in their personal experiences and peace work as they face their shattered families, confused communities and opposing society. The obvious contender is his keen and hardworking son Martin but Paul has always held Martin in open contempt, for reasons that are shrouded in mystery and familial repression. So when François' dashing and successful winemaker son Philippe drops over from California to visit his sick dad, Paul is provided with a ready-made replacement son and heir - and he makes no secret of his partiality. The scene is set for a Shakespearean struggle for money, territory and parental affection - one that's further complicated by a quirk of French law which allows anyone to be 'adopted' for inheritance purposes, even if they have living parents, and even if there's an existing biological line of succession. This lush family drama builds tension as efficiently and cruelly as a thriller, but ballasts it with an undertow of deep-felt emotion. The cast is also excellent: selected with a rigorous attention to the nuances of their roles, and hugely committed in their performances.
