Baseball By: Chris M. Imagine this: being in a big field of freshly cut green grass, red dirt that comes around the stadium, and chalk outlining the field. Looking, waiting, seeing the player with the bat make his moment to shine, when the ball comes to contact with his bat, while the outfielders are waiting patiently to chase, and attack the ball with their gloves. Having to react in less than a second. Deciding of what outcome the player may have to do. Also, depending on the situation, if they should risk getting an out or playing it safe for the next play. This is baseball, America’s favorite past time. Baseball is extremely rich in history. It has been around for an extraordinary long time. For example, Jackie Robinson, a well-known baseball player that impacted baseball in many ways. Jackie was the first African-American to play Major League Baseball (MLB) in 1947. He also broke the racial line for being the first black to play baseball in MLB. In addition, Robinson broke Babe’s Ruth homerun record with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Baseball was helpful for the rights movement because Robinson proved to people that not only white men are good at baseball. Furthermore, Babe Ruth is one of the all time greatest baseball players. Ruth’s career starting off with the Boston Red Sox’s got traded to the Yankees, while before they weren’t that good. Ruth led the Yankees to be the most competitive team and was the Red Sox’s greatest regret in the history of baseball. Babe Ruth wasn’t the only star on the Yankees, with his teammate Lou Gehrig. Gehrig was the Yankees first baseman who played 17 seasons in the MLB. They were in the 1920’s legendary Yankees roster. The Yankees are famous for their famous striped jerseys. When playing you feel like you could be part of history. It's more than just a game, it brings people together. Calling up your friends just to play. Even just having them over to watch the games going on. Also, when going to a game you have to eat the famous “Hot Dogs” that are wrapped in aluminum, and once it is unwrapped the smell enters your nose, and your mouth gets watery just looking at the warm hot dogs. In addition, the delicious sunflower seeds liven up the traditions of baseball by eating, and spitting them out. Just having a good time I’d say. Now taking the love of baseball to the field. It all starts in the dugout, where players get mentally ready to play, and then they enter the field where it all comes down to fate being on their side. Deciding if you will run, or get out. Baseball consists of nine positions: Left, Right, Center, Third, Shortstop, Second, First, Pitcher, and Catcher. Each one of these positions is very important special duties. First base gets thrown the ball to them constantly to get the most outs. Second and shortstop is the center of all play, both helping each other and being cut off men for the outfielders. Third base or the hot corner has the most balls getting hit in this general direction. Next, is the catcher calling plays, watching the field to tell the pitcher what to look out for, and make sure to catch all the wild pitches. Lastly, the pitcher must have different types of throws to strike the batter out. Some pitches are called knuckle, curve, change-up, and fastball. The objective of a knuckle is to keep the ball still with no movement. The curve is a pitch that is hard to hit because it curves down right when it gets to the plate. Third a change-up is thrown when you try to keep the batter off guard; it is usually

thrown when holding it with your palm. Finally the most know is the fastball, which is thrown differently. One type of fastball is a two seam, which is thrown with your index, middle and thumb finger. A four seam is meant for better accuracy and more speed. Lastly, even if you can’t play baseball you could still love the sport. In addition, baseball is the all time greatest sport in America. Baseball is a sport where you feel the leather of your gloves, where you smell the chalk and dirt of the field, where you see players running around bases, and where you hear that great pop when you hit the ball on the fat piece of the bat.

National Basketball Association By: Abbas K. The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a professional basketball league in North America. It was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946 with the name Basketball Association of America (BAA). The name stayed until August 3, 1949, when the BAA thought that they should have a different name. They thought about taking the idea of their enemy the National Basketball League (NBL) but adding the association at the end of it. But in 1969, the NBA faced a new threat. The American Basketball Association (ABA). They had stars like Julius Erving, Mel Daniels, Connie Hawkins, and more. The NBA was not affected. They had players like Walt Frazier, Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, and others. Unlike the NBA, the ABA had a three point shot. The NBA had a 24-second shot clock and the ABA had 30 seconds. One day, August 5, 1976, the NBA and ABA agree to a merger to create the NBA. All new stars joined throughout the years such as Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, LeBron James, Reggie Miller, Jason Kidd and more. There are 29 teams in the U.S. and one team in Canada, 30 teams in all.

Yankees Pitcher Mariano Rivera Retires from the New York Yankees Elias E. Mariano Rivera, the New York Yankees closer and relief pitcher finally retired from the Yankees. This was his last season playing for the Yankees. He played for the Yankees for 19 seasons. He was one of major league baseball’s all time best closers. He wore the number “42” and his nickname was “Mo.” He was an AllStar for 13 years and helped the Yankees win the World Series five times. In 1999 he was named the World Series Most Valuable Player and in 2003 he was named American League Championship Series Most Valuable Player. The Yankees will be retiring his number “42” after this season. It will be sad to see Rivera retire because he was so exciting to watch and he was a great role model for kids.

The Government Shutdown 2013: What Kids Need To Know Written by: Michael D. T. So, what is the government shutdown of 2013? If you heard it on the news, the government shutdown is basically when Congress could not pass a budget so some government services stopped. When the government got shutdown, most people working in the government could not go to work. Some of the places that we could not visit because of the shutdown were national parks and museums. How are kids supposed to go on field trips and see the things that we are learning in class? Now mostly over hundreds of thousands of people lost their pay, and that is most likely to be one of the craziest things, ever! And not just people in the government lost their jobs, other people working in state parks got furloughed, which means that people are still working, but not getting paid because the government got shutdown. How are these families supposed to pay their bills? Here’s some information I got from this website that cost our nation over $24billion: http://swampland.time.com/2013/10/17/heres-what-the-government-shutdown-cost-theeconomy/

$217 million per day in lost federal and contractor wages in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area alone Other website I used for information: http://www.timeforkids.com/news/government-shutdown/112091

How to Stay Away From the Flu. By Jiah L. Did you know that it is getting colder these days? And more people are getting flu when the weather is colder. Sure we can take a flu shot at the Dr's office but there are better ways to control your fever. We shall show you the different ways all over the world. First, in Korea what you can do is drink boiled water with radish, Clementine peels and ginger for a long time then honey into. It is good for your health and flu won’t catch you. Next, Singapore uses Coke! Boiling Coke and drinking it with lemons. There are a lot of creative ways to do it. Another way to do it is in Japan, they use Sake. They heat Sake and drink it with an egg, and then you must sleep. But remember, that is only for adults even if it may help you. In Canada, because of phlegm you must not eat dairy like milk, cheese, and yogurt. And They drink lemon tea with honey. Finally, in America, we eat Chicken soup and drink warm water a lot. As you can see, there are lots of ways to keep you away from a cold. What’s your favorite way?

Longer Lunch? I think that lunch periods should be longer. A reason is because some students waste their money buying food and not eating lunch. “It is time for children to play and eat. How could they if such short amount of time? So, I say that we get more lunch time!" says Michelle P. "This is a time when we should enjoy ourselves," says another. Teachers should have more time to eat too! I say this because teaches (including the principal and vice principal) do hard work. They do a lot of things for us. They should have time to enjoy themselves so they have time to go to the restroom, eat, and talk to the other teachers who their friends to. This is why I say that students AND teachers should have more time for lunch. Gloria Park

Trends How to Make a Rainbow Loom Ghost By: Ava W.

Supplies • Rainbow Loom • Two different color rubber bands (one for the body, one for the eyes) • Hook Procedure 1. Use base remover or pop out the center pin so your Rainbow Loom is a rectangle. Make sure your red arrow is pointing away from you before you add any rubber bands.

2. Place a rubber band on the center pin of the first row and put it over the center pin in the second row. 3. Place two rubber band on the center pin of the second row and attach to the left and right pins of the third row. See below.

4. Place two rubber bands straight from the second row center pin forward to the third row center pin.

5. From now on you will use two rubber bands and place them going forward from the third row pins to the fourth row pins (I like to start at the left side first).

6. Now using your eye color rubber bands place it on the left and right pins going from the fourth to fifth row. You will now finish the body placing the rubber band on as you see below until the eighth row of pins.

7. From the fourth to the eighth row place a body color rubber band across all three pins.

8. Now turn your loom so the red arrow is pointing toward you and begin hooking.

9. Grab the rubber band that goes across row eight and hook forward.

10. Continue hooking forward until you reach the third row. When you reach the third row, you will hook the center bands forward to the second row middle pin. You will also hook the third row left and right rubber bands forward to the second row middle pin.

11. Then hook the second row center band forward to the first row center pin. 12. Finally, take the rubber band from the first row center pin and put it securely on your hook to remove the ghost. Hold your loom down and gently remove your ghost.

Tip! You can make a simple slipknot with two rubber bands to use this as a charm or keychain!

ACS Trends A lot of schools have popular activities each year. Like this year, "Rainbow Loom" is the most popular activity kids and adults enjoy. A lot of my friends make jump ropes, bracelets, rings, headbands, necklaces, key chains, and more! You might find a friend that wears their loom bracelets up to their elbows. Rainbow Looms is a popular activity this year.

Last year, the most popular activity was duck tape. My friends will make duck tape wallets, bags, bows, purses, and probably more! My friends will cut, paste, and do everything they could so it would look outstanding! Well I don't exactly remember but some of the new trend my friends will bring almost everyday are, orbez, silly bands, pencil toppers, piggy sharpeners, Korean paper called dakgee(딱지), mini food erasers, and more. Again, maybe next year, everyone will forget about Rainbow Looms and find a new trend for the year.

Minnie McClary Speaks Her Mind by Valerie Hobbs Lauren . 5A The book Minnie McClary Speaks Her Mind by Valerie Hobbs is about a shy girl named Minnie who changes into a brave, outgoing person. Minnie is new at Mojave Middle School and does not like to speak in front of people. However, that all changes when she meets the new language arts teacher, Miss Marks. She teaches her students to always express themselves. When some parents want Miss Marks fired, Minnie, inspired by Miss Marks, stands up for what is right and tells the crowd how Miss Marks was the best teacher she ever had. As a result of Minnie’s bravery, Miss Marks is able to keep her job. The author’s message is to express yourself and stand up for what is right. You won’t believe what Minnie does to show her bravery! I give this book five out of five stars. Minnie McClary Speaks Her Mind was very enjoyable and fun to read. I would recommend this book to everyone ages ten and up. Children under ten might not understand some parts of the book. I am sure many adults and children will enjoy reading this wonderful book. The relationship between Minnie and Miss. Marks is very touching and you will not regret reading Minnie McClary Speaks Her Mind by Valerie Hobbs.

PIZZA by KYLE M. and LUCAS R.

The Origin of Pizza The origin of pizza goes back to ancient times. Like the ancient Middle Eastern cultures that were eating flat unleavened bread, which was cooked in mud ovens, ancient Mediterranean cultures ate unleavened bread with seasoning and olive oil on top. An Italian baker named Raffaele Esposito in the late 1800’s made the first pizza to represent Italy’s flag colors- red, white and green, for the visiting King Umberto and Queen Margherita. He used tomatoes for red, mozzarella cheese for white and basil for green. The King and Queen liked it so much that they spread the news throughout Italy. Italian immigrants brought the idea to the United States. That is the origin of pizza.

Ingredients Pizza Dough 1 1/2 Cups Warm Water 1 Package (2 1/4 teaspoons) of active dry yeast 3 1/2 Cups Bread Flour 2 Table Spoons Olive Oil 2 Teaspoons Salt 1 Teaspoon Sugar Pizza Ingredients Olive Oil Cornmeal Tomato Sauce Shredded Mozzarella Cheese Any Toppings you like (ie: Pepperoni, Basil, Sausage, Mushrooms, etc.)

How to make the dough First add the water in the bowl. Mix in the olive oil, flour, yeast, salt and sugar. Knead the dough until it is soft. Knead the dough until it's soft. If the dough is too wet, sprinkle flour. Get a new bowl and coat it with olive oil. Next, put a ball of dough in the bowl with olive oil. Make sure the dough is coated with Olive Oil. Cover the bowl with clear wrap and put it in a warm spot for about an hour and a half. The longer you leave it, the better it will taste. Now you are done with the dough.

How to Prepare the Pizza Now, you're ready to prepare the pizza. First, you have to pre heat the oven to 450 degrees for 30 minutes to an hour. Next, put flour on a cutting board so your dough does not stick. Flatten the dough until it is half an inch thick and stretch it until it is 10 to 12 inches in diameter. The, get a clean cooking brush, dip it in olive oil, and brush only the top of the dough. Sprinkle the baking sheet with corn meal. Transfer the flattened dough to the baking sheet. Get the tomato sauce and spread it around the top of the dough (except for the edges), Now you have to sprinkle with cheese and put any toppings you want. Finally, bake the pizza until the crust is brown and the cheese is melted. This should take about 10 to15 minutes. Wait until it's cool and then enjoy it! PIZZA

Donna's Pizza Donna's Pizza located in Palisades Park is really good if you like your pizza a little greasy and a crusty crust. The price of a slice at Donna's is more than at Sonny's. It is $2.60 each. The restaurant is pretty large compared to the other pizza places we went to. They probably melted the cheese a little longer than at Sonny's too.

Sonny's Pizza Sonny's Pizza is located in Englewood really close to Leonia. It is really good. It's very similar to Fort Lee Pizza it has just a little less sauce though. The restaurant is a medium size. The cost of one slice is $2.25. The sauce is good and it's a little sweet. The nicely melted cheese was very soft and the crust was not too crunchy.

Fort Lee Pizza Fort Lee pizza is good and has a little more sauce than Sonny’s pizza. It costs $2.40 for a slice at Fort Lee pizza. Fort Lee pizza’s crust is chewy on the outside and soft inside. The slice is very big. Fort Lee pizza also has many different types of pizza. The same family has owned it since 1973.

Franco’s Metro Pizza Franco’s Metro pizza has more cheese on their slice than Donna’s pizza. The crust is very crunchy at Franco’s Metro. The slice also came out the hottest out of all 4 places. They have a lot of basil sprinkled on the slice. And the best was a bubble on the crust. It was $2.03 for a slice, the cheapest of the pizzerias.

Essays Chess By:Ryan R. Chess is an interactive and fun game for two that takes place on a checkered board with 64 squares. Each player has 16 pieces in the start of the game. The different pieces are (according to importance), a king, a queen, a rook (also known as a castle), a bishop, a knight, and a pawn (also known as a slave). In order to win, you need to checkmate the opponent’s king. To checkmate is to attack the king so it has nowhere to go. If the king can go to a square that is not being attacked, it is not considered a checkmate. If your king is in checkmate, you lose. In order to play, you need to know how different pieces move. The king can move one square at one turn in every direction. The queen can move in any number of squares in any direction. The rook can go horizontally and vertically in any number of squares but it cannot go diagonally. The bishop can move diagonally in any number of squares but it cannot go vertically or horizontally. The knight has an interesting twist in the way it moves. You need to go 2 spaces horizontally or vertically in the air, then you move 1 square on either side. Knights can skip over the air straight towards the space that you choose. The pawn cannot go backwards, moving only one square forward. The pawn can go 2 squares forward on it’s first move and capture one square diagonally. Pieces can capture what they land on (except the pawn that can capture 1 square diagonally). Pieces have to stop at the space where the piece is when capturing. Chess has a long history. Some believe that it came from India. Others believe that it came from China. The game spread when the Arabs conquered Persia. Then it spread to Europe in the 10th century, when the Arabs took over Spain. I think that the Europeans shared this game to the Americans and soon lots of people tried the game. “Chess is the gymnasium of the mind” says German chess master Adolf Anderssen. From my perspective,I think that chess can be complicated but fun! I like to play chess because some strategy can pop out and beat you. Also I like games of surprise. So chess makes a great game for me. And chess can make hours of delight in every move. As I said, chess is a very strategic and fun game. It passes time so no one playing it will ever get bored. Also lot of times you can get tricked, so be careful! Try to remember how the pieces are moved, and don’t forget to shake hands. Good sportsmanship makes a good game. And try new things like en passant (meaning “in passing”) and the move castle. Also be careful of what you are moving. So take care and good luck!

Penguins Andrew C. Penguins are one of 40 species of birds incapable of flight. Most penguins live in the southern hemisphere. Penguins eat only seafood and have no teeth. Male penguins take care of the baby penguins while the female penguins search for food. The Magellanic penguin is named after Ferdinand Magellan who first spotted them in 1520. To keep warm in their cold environment penguins are insulated with blubber and have waterproof feathers. There are 17 types of penguins and they all live in the southern hemisphere. Most of the types of penguins are almost extinct.

I'm Older Than I Look by Tyler s. On the outside, I'm 10. A little more inside me, I'm 12. In my heart, I'm 14. You can tell by how I act. Firstly, I don't listen. A very defiant child like me can get annoyed when they get advice. Especially from fifth graders, they can have a know-it-all attitude. Don't stress over it. We're getting older now. As we do, we like to do more stuff on our own. My mom always says with independence comes responsibility. That means that when I get more responsible, she will leave me alone. Secondly, I don't take her advice. That happens a lot when there's a test or a quiz coming up. My mom always says study. But hey, I'm a fun loving kid. Why would I want to study? But when I get a grade that I'm not too happy with, I blame my parents. But it's my fault because I didn't study. Finally, my mind is growing quicker than my body. I may start puberty at 12, but my mind already started. Once I had mood swings. I woke up and felt energetic, but then I felt depressed. I rode my bike, saw my friend, May, and then I felt better! Plus I'm not going to be 10 forever, I will be 11, 12, 13,14, 15 and 16.

Public Speaking -Grace J. Have this ever happen to you? You had the best time in school, but your teacher breaks it open. She/He told you to go to the front of the class and share write you wrote. You suddenly feel sweaty and nervous that right second she tells you to. It's likely that people get that feeling and just wants to disappear. I get that feeling all a lot. I think that teachers want to see your public speaking talent. When you get to middle school or high school, you need to do them a lot. However, it might seem boring, but it's part of your grade. Also, when you get older, you can't regret it. But I wish we don't have to share. Why can't the teacher do it themselves?
