JOIN US FOR AN EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE WITH THE CONTINENT OF AFRICA AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS

President Mwai Kibaki is received by President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania on arrival for the 8th Leon Sullivan Heads of State Summit at Arusha International Conference Centre, Arusha.

For the Leon H. Sullivan Summit IX, we are honored to offer a number of extraordinary opportunities for corporations, non-profits, and governments around the globe to leverage the Summit as a means of gaining greater market share and exposure on the continent. The Summit offers an excellent opportunity as well to network with African leaders from the government, business, and civil society sectors. 1

Reverend Leon H. Sullivan

The Purpose of the Leon H. Sullivan Summit The Leon H. Sullivan Summits (previously known as African-African American Summits) were initiated in 1991 by the Rev. Leon H. Sullivan, a noted civil rights leader and humanitarian whose vision was to establish a bridge between Americans and Africans. The Summits bring together the world’s political and business leaders, delegates representing national and international civil and multinational organizations, and members of academic institutions in order to focus attention and resources on Africa’s economic and social development. Their mission was inspired by Rev. Sullivan’s belief that the development of Africa is a matter of global partnerships. It was particularly important to Rev. Sullivan that Africa’s Diaspora and Friends of Africa are active participants in Africa’s development. The Leon H. Sullivan Summits are purposed to build a bridge to unite the people of African heritage, both in Africa and elsewhere. Along with Friends of Africa and other world leaders the Summits work in directing resources to the continent, financial and otherwise. The objective is always to help the nations of Africa serve the needs of its people with increased participation in the global economy particularly in the areas of Agriculture, Business, Culture, Education, Energy and Health.

“From the beginning of the summit movement, I believe if Stanley could do what he did in Africa, and Livingston could do what he did in Africa and Rhodes could do what he did in Africa, although our goals were far from the same, that I could do, with the help of God, what I wanted to do for Africa. But this time not for diamonds, or gold, or money but for the uplift of Black children who for 400 years have had the foot of the World on Reverend Leon H. Sullivan the back of their necks.” 2

One Africa The Leon H. Sullivan Summit IX Our Esteemed Host Country – The Kingdom of Morocco For the first time in its history, the 9th Leon H. Sullivan Summit will take place in a North African country – Morocco. In October of 2010, Ambassador Andrew Young, Chair, Hope Sullivan Masters, President and CEO and members of the Board of Directors for the Leon H. Sullivan Foundation were invited by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to experience his homeland so that we could determine if the country offered what we would need to conduct the 2011 Sullivan Summit. As one can imagine, the experience was extraordinary, the scenery breathtaking and exotic, our host dignitaries informative and amenable, the cultural history and amenities unrivaled, and the people warm, gracious and proud. The group returned to Washington with great enthusiasm and many ideas about how this 9th Leon Sullivan Summit would be like no other. Here in Morocco, we have an opportunity to not only enjoy all that Morocco has to offer the inquisitive traveler but to also promote a greater understanding between the people of North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, our American delegates gain a better understanding of the people of Morocco, their personal challenges and hopes.

The Summit’s Guiding Theme of One Africa The Leon H. Sullivan Foundation, through this next historic Summit, seeks to perpetuate the continued need for positive and productive inter-dependence and cross-continental cooperation and partnerships between the 53 nations of Africa. In critical matters such as healthcare, infrastructure, information technology, education, the environment, and attracting greater investment from around the globe, the willingness of African nations to work together for common prosperity and well-being is essential. This concept of “One Africa” will be further explored and interpreted through the variety of programs, activities, and invited speakers and guests which will constitute the 9th Leon H. Sullivan Summit. Corporate, NGO, and government leaders will find this Summit to be an excellent platform for conducting their work and networking with their African counterparts from across the continent of Africa. The Leon H. Sullivan Foundation is deeply grateful to His Majesty for inviting us all to join him in October 2011 for the Ninth Leon H. Sullivan Summit. 6

One Africa The Leon H. Sullivan Summit IX Highlights of the Summit Program Agenda Live video broadcast of a heart surgery to more than 4,000 Summit delegates during a plenary session focused on the rise of chronic diseases such as diabetes. Facilitating the initiation of potential infrastructure and investment projects that can move forward in a timely manner after the Summit is a key outcome goal. The Summit will serve as a vehicle for bringing together key players from across the Continent and from the United States to explore possible business projects. Presenting an interactive Summit experience will be a focal point for our programs and activities. Proposed interactive experiences include conducting a build out with Habitat for Humanity in Ethiopia, visiting a local elementary school and University to highlight how important education is to empowering the people of Africa, and taking a first-hand look at a state-of-the-art city infrastructure project.
