The Estate of Sue Hewitt

lots 1 – 146

Sue Hewitt (1941-2024) grew up in a house full of art and politics as the daughter of Mac Hewitt, art lover and NSW Minister for Labour and Industry. This environment, followed by appointments as the assistant to Baroness Mai Casey in Papua New Guinea, then at Government House as Baron Richard Casey served as Governor General of Australia, forged in Sue a deep passion and understanding of the art world. Paired with a drive and commitment to highest of standards, this passion took her all over the world and led to her appointment as the first female auctioneer for Christie's worldwide and transitioned to Managing Director of Christie's Australia. Subsequent appointments cemented her as a prominent and respected figure within the Australian arts community. Sue supported galleries and institutions with her particular devotion to indigenous and Australian art in several roles both officially and as a trusted advisor.

Sue's friends and family remember her vitality, humour, loyalty and knowledge. The Australian Art community remembers a forthright, devoted champion of all of the arts.

literature

J. Gleeson, Robert Klippel, Sydney 1983, p. 374, illus. p. 375 ‘LS 59 is unique among Klippel’s collages in that the three principal collaged elements are photographs of three of Klippel’s own constructions Reading from left to right they are Opus 282, Opus 277 and Opus 281, made in the same year as the collage. The group stands on a collaged base of enlarged machine parts and the effect is one of enigmatic and somewhat sinister monumentality.

other notes

Sailing and rowing regattas were popular in Pyrmont and held as early as 1847. The 1848 regatta, honouring Queen Victoria’s birthday, featured eight races, with significant prize money. As the event evolved, some spectators observed from a decorated flagship, while booths on shore sold food and drink. From the mid 1860s Balmain’s waterways became more popular and Pyrmont’s regatta days declined in the 1880s with the increase of shipping and industrialisation in the bay.

Evan Jones’ (1846-1917) obituary in the Sydney Daily Telegraph states that he “arrived in Australia from England whilst a lad and was educated at the Fort Street School. At the age of twelve, he went to work with Messrs. Hardy Brothers, Jewellers, Hunter Street in the city and later was employed by the firm of Hogarth & Erichsen. At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to Mr. C.L. Qwist from whom he received his training in the jewellery trade. Many valuable trophies remain as monuments to Jones’ skill.” He worked from Qwist’s former rooms in Hunter Street Sydney and later had several branches in the city. He was a major exhibitor at the Melbourne Exhibition of 1880 and famous for his mounted emu eggs. His works can be found in the collection of the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney and various private collections.
