life at leo baeck shabbat . . . Shabbat is THE day of the week to be with our Jewish community. Whether on Friday nights or Saturday mornings, whether to pray or eat, sing or learn, whether we’re 2 or 92, Leo Baeck Temple is our Shabbat home away from home.

friday night services Our Friday night Shabbat service includes music, singing, traditional and creative prayers and a short sermon or d'var torah. We begin with a short “PrOneg” (pre-Oneg) at 5:45 for a pre-service nosh and chance to greet each other. At 6:15pm, we begin our service. Children’s Shabbat Programming is offered for pre-school to third grade children. We offer Shabbat services at 7:30pm on one Friday of each month. Watch your Bulletin, the LBT website and emails for these dates.

life at leo baeck shabbat . . . shabbat morning minyan

- 9:30am

Leo Baeck Temple’s Shabbat morning minyan is one of our community’s greatest jewels. Though it’s called a minyan, it’s in no way limited to ten: it’s a welcoming, joyous, vibrant, intellectually-stimulating gathering open to all. Full of humor and heart, the minyan community meets on the second and fourth Saturday of every month. Some members sign up to give the d’var Torah, to read from the Torah, and to read haftarah. Others come to check it out – to sing, pray, learn and be in community. Our clergy join with members to create an informal, musical, spiritual, and eye-opening Shabbat service. A potluck Kiddush lunch follows each service. To learn more about minyan or receive the bi-weekly minyan email, contact Rabbi Timoner at rtimoner@leobaecktemple.org

tot shabbat service Eight Saturdays - 9:30am: November 1, December 13, 2014, January 31, February 28, March 21, April 18, May 16, June 20, 2015 Celebrate Shabbat with your little ones on Saturday morning at Leo Baeck Temple! Tot Shabbat services are led by our Assistant Rabbi/Director of Lifelong Learning, Lisa Berney. Each service will feature music, a story, and interactive singing that will get your whole family up and moving around. Children will sing, clap, and dance with their parents as a great way to start the weekend. Following services a light snack will be served. If you are interested in celebrating a birthday at Tot Shabbat contact Rabbi Berney at 310.476.2861 or in an email to lberney@leobaecktemple.org.

Join us for our community shpiel and costume contest -- followed by our homespun carnival with food, prizes, dunk tank and fun! For congregants of all ages, the young - and young at heart.

BUILDING A SOULFUL LIFE

enjoy

We are thrilled that Alan Morinis is joining us as our Scholar- in-Residence this year.

Mr. Morinis is the founder and Dean of The Mussar Institute and an active interpreter of the teachings and practices of the Mussar tradition. Born and raised in a culturally Jewish but non-observant home, he studied anthropology at Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship. For the past sixteen years, the nearly-lost Jewish spiritual discipline of Mussar has been his passion, a journey recorded in the book Climbing Jacob’s Ladder (Broadway 2002). His guide to Mussar practice, entitled Everyday Holiness: The Jewish Spiritual Path of Mussar, was published in May 2007. His newest book on Mussar, With Heart in Mind, was published in August 2014.

Friday, April 24 - Sunday, April 26, 2015

Building a Soulful Life with Scholar-in-Residence Alan Morinis What is Mussar? Mussar is a path of contemplative practices and exercises that have evolved in the Jewish world over the past thousand years to help an individual to pinpoint and then to break through the barriers that surround and obstruct the light of the soul, the obstacles that prevent a person from becoming the best human being he or she can be. Mussar is a treasury of techniques and understandings that offers immensely valuable guidance for the journey of our lives. The Jewish community spawned Mussar to help people overcome the inner obstacles that hinder them from living up to the laws and commandments that form the code of life. The human reality Mussar addresses is actually universal, and the gifts it offers can be used by all people. Friday evening, April 24 - What Is Mussar & Why Should I Care? mussar shabbats To prepare us for our time with Mr. Morinis and to give us an introduction to the Jewish practice of mussar, we will celebrate four Mussar Shabbats during the year. These Shabbat services will be contemplative in nature, and they will be followed by Shabbat dinner and an hour of mussar study. There will also be two Saturday morning study sessions. No experience is necessary, just a curious mind and open heart. Mussar Shabbats will take place on four Fridays and two Saturdays, November 14, December 12, 2014, January 24, February 7 (Yom Limmud), March 20, and May 29, 2015. life at leo baeck jewish learning . . . limmud lite shabbat Friday, November 7, 2014 - 6:00pm Over 900 people have enjoyed Yom Limmud over the years --- and we move into our 6th year with much anticipation. We want to give everyone a “taste” of what we’re in for on Saturday, February 7th. Join us on November 7th for our Shabbat evening service at 6:00 --- then stay for dinner and a choice of learning sessions. Let us know you’re attending in an email to: rsvp@leobaecktemple.org.

yom limmud 6th annual celebration of learning Saturday, February 7, 2015 - all day, for all ages On a single Shabbat last spring, there were more than 40 sessions conducted at Leo Baeck Temple over an eight-hour time period with more than 300 people in attendance. Many sessions were sold out within the first week of open registration. The question is, will you be able to sign up in time to get to attend your first choice session this year? The bigger question is, what will you present at this year’s Yom Limmud? Yom Limmud is not just for grown-ups! Pre-K through 6th grade students are invited to Camp Baeck, a special full-day of fun and learning. Parents, you are welcome to sign your children in and out throughout the day, so that they can attend a Yom Limmud session and learn with you, and also know that your children are having fun while you are learning on your own. Watch for the Yom Limmud brochure and registration information.

life at leo baeck community organizing . . . Do you want to feel more connected to other members of Leo Baeck Temple? Do you want to make a positive difference in our city? Do you want to get to know Angelenos across lines of race, class, and religion? For all this and more, get involved with Community Organizing. Since 2011, we have engaged in more than 300 one-to-one conversations within our temple community. Out of these conversations, we identified the economy, health care, and education as the problems that most affect the members of our temple. Working with our partners across the city and on a statewide level, we have created positive change and we have seen results! We are working with other community stakeholders, One LA and Mayor Garcetti to create more than 100,000 jobs and get 80,000 cars off the road by building rapid transit along the 405 corridor. Our health care team has been involved with health insurance options and the implementation of Covered California. Our community building team networked our affinity groups with one another, and expanded the Lifecycle list, building a stronger, more cohesive LBT community.

Finally, we are part of Reform CA, a powerful effort within the Reform movement to make a difference at the state level. Rabbis and lay leaders were instrumental in passing the Trust Act, which decriminalizes undocumented immigrants in California, creating trust between immigrant communities and local law enforcement, while preventing many deportations. We also had a “win” with affordable housing, securing $3 billion for the construction of affordable homes over the next five years. You can be part of Reform CA’s next project. To get involved, please contact Rabbi Timoner at ritomoner@leobaecktemple.org.

This MLK Weekend, we’ll once again use our hands to make a concrete difference in people’s lives while learning about the city and people of New Orleans. Join other Leo Baeckers on a journey of hope, awareness, and empowerment. Contact Abigail Spiegel at 310.476.2861 or aspiegel@leobaecktemple.org to sign up or get more information. life at leo baeck caring community ... Leo Baeck Temple is a Caring Community. Judaism teaches that we all are responsible to care for one another in times of need and celebrate one another in times of joy. The LBT Caring Community Coordinating Group reaches out to members of our Temple community to perform many mitzvot, including visiting the sick and bringing them food, comforting the bereaved, supporting families who have recently welcomed a new baby into their homes, and writing notes to congregants who have celebrated simchas. Remember to let us know if you, a loved one, or a member of the congregation is going through a time of great joy, sorrow or illness. Help Leo Baeckers connect with and care for one another. Please contact Vida Brucker (vidabrucker@mac.com) to get involved.

healing blanket project The Healing Blanket Project was started by members of LBT and is under the wing of LBT Women, however it is open to all men, women, and kids who wish to participate. We meet occasionally to knit and socialize as a group on Sundays, at Yom Limmud, and various LBT retreats. We also knit on our own. The focus of our project is to make and distribute blankets to congregants in need of healing. Each blanket is made up of a number of squares knitted by members and then stitched together. We infuse our knitting time with intentionality --praying for healing for ourselves and one another and offer the blankets up with our blessings. The pattern is simple and we can even teach you how to knit. Yarn and a packet with the pattern and blessings is available in Cantor Kates' office. You need your own needles. If you have questions or would like more information, contact Cantor Kates or Felicia Park-Rogers (feliciaparkrogers@gmail.com).

achim “How good it is for brothers to dwell together in peace.” The purpose of Achim, which means “brothers” in Hebrew, is to create a collegial community of men. The group meets at the homes of our members on a rotating basis and over breakfast and coffee, we explore various subjects of interest to men. Areas we have explored this year include Torah study, responsa literature, Israeli and domestic politics, discussion of the qualities of leadership as defined in Jewish texts, and the dangers of fringe religious groups.
